Training Camp is Officially Underway for the Carolina Hurricanes
The first day of camp has come and gone and now we get to see what some of the lines look like and we also get to hear from some of the players themselves following the first day of on ice activity. On the Friday episode of Lockdown Hurricanes, we’re going to do some overall thoughts from day one of training camp and we’re also going to hear from Nicolai Elers and Kan J Miller as they finally have their first practices with the Can. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m excited that we finally get to talk about some on ice product when it comes to your Carolina Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricanes, part of the Locked On Network. Your team every day. Welcome to the Friday edition of Locked On Hurricanes, your team every day, part of the Locked On Network. Thank you to the everyday for making this your first listen of the day. Five days a week, Monday through Friday, talking everything about your Carolina Hurricanes. I’m your host, Zach Martin, the credential Carolina Hurricanes beat writer over at the Hackers, also the co-host of Searchcast, which is a weekly Carolina Hurricanes podcast along with all my dudes here at Locked on Hurricanes. On the Friday edition of the show, like I said, we get to do day one thoughts from camp. what the all the lines look like for group C1 and C2. And then we get to hear from Nikolai Eers and Kandra Miller after their first on ice practice with the Carolina Hurricanes. So, group C1 started at 9:00 at Invisalign. Group C2 started at 11:00 a.m. just a couple hours after the start of the first one. And we got to see what the groups were like. You know, I got to see what some of the lines are like because it’s the first day. You just kind of want to know what’s going on and stuff like that. So for C1 which is basically the main AHL roster with you know Oliver Schillington being the only extra you know the only PTO guy that group and also you talk about Kaden Primo and some other guys who came in racing with the Hurricanes. So you had Eer’s AO Jarvis which we all kind of like okay you know that’s kind of what everyone thought they might be the first line. This is where it gets interesting. You’re talking about Andre Fetchikov, Logan Stain Coven, and Jackson Blake. So, there is a quote that I will bring up after we’re done talking about these main parts of why we see Stain Coven at at 2C. Now, like I said, it’s day one. Don’t take these as, oh, these are going to be the lines. It’s just this is what the Hurricanes went with to start training camp. And it was, you know, Logan Stan in the 2C with Jackson Blake on the wing. And then you got Martinuk, Stall, Kerier, and then Robinson, Kanye, and Hall with Janowski kind of swapping in and out with Hall. And then on defense, you’ve got Kandra Miller, Jaylen Chaffel, Mike Riley, Shawn Walker, Alexander Keesan, Shane Gossip, and then Gavin Bay Ruther, and Oliver Schillington. And of course with the goalies, you had Anderson, coach Czechov in Primo. Now, I will say this, and this is was very specified early on in camp for day one. Jan Kowsky and Jaylen Chafffield were in the yellow known contact jerseys, but they were still participating in the on ice stuff. They just they couldn’t be part of contact and there was no Jacob Slavven, which we’ll bring up here in a little bit as well of why that was a thing for him not being there. Now, for the C2 group, obviously, you know, it’s a lot of the AHL guys, PTO’s and stuff like that. Tyson Jo, Justin Robbodaf, Felix Agar, Storm. Then it was Yasa, Brenda Morado, um Smith, Suzuki, Le Bank, Trickus off with Slave and Reichen kind of split in that 4C spot with no Gundler. And then there was no set pairings for the defense. They kind of just rotating in in itself. So you had Bendika, Fenori, Himosami, Legote, Montgomery, Nestrom, and Ronin Cely. And then for the goalending, you had Miffikov, uh Casay, and Quap. Now, this is what Rod Brennan Moore said about Jacob Slav and why he wasn’t there. Um, he’s trained pretty hard in the summer and he was not he was feeling a little sore. Until he says 100%, we’re not going to put him out there. So, it’s just Jacob Slave a little bit hard in the off season. Still a little sore right now. The Hurricanes like, “Hey, you’re our best defenseman. It’s day one of training camp. We’re not going to push you out there. You’ll be fine.” And so it’s nothing too serious. It’s more of just like, hey, he’s sore. He trained really hard. You know, it’s day one of on ice training. We all know he’s going to be there. It’s something not to really worry about when it comes to that. Now, for Logan stay, why was he put there on the ice as the 2C for the Hurricanes to start out camp? This is what Rod Bernamar is saying. You have to be willing to understand that there’s a lot of work that has to go into playing center. There are a lot of little things people don’t really understand and you have to be willing to take the bumps a little bit. The fact that he’s talking about staying coven helps. We know what kind of what kind of kid he is. He’s willing to take on whatever we hand him. We’ll see. I don’t know that it will go past a couple practices. It might. Who knows? But you’ve got to try something. So that’s what you’re kind of looking at with why Rod Brandmore is thrown and Stan Coven out there and I and that’s what I kind of what I was looking at with and I’ve said you guys heard me say during the off season has done in the Western League and he also did play some center a little bit with the Dallas Stars as well. So, it’s not really surprising that you see Logan Stankhovven getting that role at the 2C spot because he’s done it before and he is a right shot. So, that kind of plays into what the Hurricanes are looking for because they’ve are still in need of a right shot center. And does this mean that it’s going to stay like that better versus who knows? It could be a couple practices. It could be a little bit longer. It all just depends. But, you got to take a shot at it. So, like I said, it’s day one. of camp. I would not say take these lines seriously as like, oh, these are going to be the lines going into the season. It’s just the first day of camp. There’s a lot of fords. There’s a lot of guys are going to be cycling through because Brad Bernard did say after practice that they have a lot of good forwards. You know, they have a plethora of good ones and they have to kind of rotate them in and see what works with what, where’s the chemistry at. So that’s why you see, you know, Kerry with the Jordans. That’s why you see Robinson with KK is the center and you got Hall and Jenowski kind of swapping off and Jenko is, you know, in a yellow no contact. So he wasn’t really doing a whole lot at the center stuff. That’s why you saw KK is the 4C and why Stain Coven was the 2C. And you look at the defense in the you know Jaylen Chapfield’s out there, but he’s in a no contact. But you kind of see what the scene one group is with all of that where you’re looking at, you know, you have the guys you got out there with, you know, Miller’s with Chaffel, Riley’s with Walker, Nasian’s with Ghost, you know, and then you have the other guys of Bay Ruther and Chillington. Of course, you got the three goalies and all that stuff. But it’s it’s it’s interesting to see when you kind of look at those groups and what’s a possible thing that’s going to happen. Even the power play groups, this is what we had from group one. You had Aaho, Elers, Jarvis with Seshikov, and Goss bear. And you guys have been hearing me say this all off seasonason. That’s probably going to be the PP1 group because now you take out a guy like Blake or whoever was up there before. Now you add in Eers and you got him with basically his linemates of Aaho, Jarvis, you add Fetch there, and then you got the pri one quarterback last year, which was Ghost. And then the second group which it actually looks really good on paper if you think about it you’re talking Jackson Blake Taylor Hall Logan stay coven and then you got Miller and Nikesian you got two really good forwardminded defenseman back there which you’ll see a lot of teams go with two defenseman on the power play but when you’re talking about Miller and Nikesian that’s a good pair to have on your on your second power play unit. Like I said, then you got Stankov and Blake and Hall. That’s a good group of fords to have up there. It’s like you almost have a, you know, a plethora of riches when it comes to just who you who can you throw in there. Like I said, you’re not even adding some of the other guys you probably put in that group. You’re talking a good majority of your, you know, you got your you got four of your top six already there. Then you got in your first group, then you got what? Stay coven Blake is there you know then you got Taylor Hall who was on the you know fourth line of course you know fourth line on air quotes because Rod is number is not lines but it’s first day of camp but that’s kind of what you’re looking at those are the power play groups that was what the main lines were the defensive groups were and you can kind of see you know where you know Ryder Brennmore is looking at when it comes to you know Jacob Slavven okay he’s banged up well not banged up he’s just sore. We’re not going to force him out there cuz why would you force your best defenseman out there when he’s not feeling 100% on day one of camp? Nothing too serious. And then you kind of see where he’s going with Logan State Co. It’s like, hey, he’s played center in the past. He’s up for it. We’re going to give him a shot and see what happens. Who knows? It’s still up in the air, but at least you’re kind of seeing what’s going on and what the thought process is of Rod going into day one of camp. Like I said, take Elijah with a grain of salt. take it. Don’t take these lines seriously. It could change by, you know, Friday. It could change by Saturday. It could change by Monday for the first game of preseason. But either way, we got an idea of what some of the lines look like. We got an idea of what the power play lines look like. And honestly, they sound really good. I’m excited. If those are the if those are the power play groups going into the season, I think that’s absolutely fantastic. So, that’s amazing to see. Now, I’ll talk about the power player groups in the line. We actually could hear from one of the new guys this upcoming season in Nicola Eers and get his thoughts after the first day of camp. So, stick around and we’ll talk about it here in a second on a Friday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. Welcome back to segment two of lockdown hurricanes your team every day. Like I said, the end of segment one, we are get to hear from Nikolai Elers for the first time after his first day of camp with the Carolina Hurricane. Super excited to hear from the new forward who joins the Canes for the next six seasons. And so without further ado, let’s jump into that with Nikolai Eers right now. I’m excited to to find the chemistry with with guys and uh it’s going to be fun. You’re going to get a lot of chances with this team too power play and everything. Does that excite you that that’s going to be an opportunity for you? Um I don’t know. I I’m picture day, too. So, you know, I I I know what I can do out there and and you know, I got to work hard for for for every bit of ice like everybody else in this locker room. So, um you know, you got coach putting things together and and we got to find ways to to to work it out. Um, so yes, I’m excited to to be here and be part of the team and um, you know, excited for the the challenges ahead. What’s it like coming into this culture? Obviously, they’ve been a contender here every year for the last seven years plus. Um, well, it’s fun. I played on a pretty good team in in Winnipeg for for the last, you know, eight years, I’d say. um you know uh winning the regular season uh last year and and making it to the uh conference finals and and things like that. So um you know I’m getting older, too. I’m I’m learning every single year and and I’m going to do everything I can to to help um where I can in this team uh and be a part of this team and hopefully we can make something something great happen. So um I’m excited for that. What’s the most appealing thing about choosing a hurricane? Obviously, something tips everybody over the top to make the decision. What was the most appealing thing for you? You said everyone pretty much has one specific thing. I I wouldn’t say I I have that. You know, I’ve I kind of looked at the the whole picture of, you know, there’s a there’s a great coach here. There’s a great great team here that they’ve been building for for years now and with a lot of good young guys. Um, a lot of talent, a lot of compete, uh, from what I’ve heard, a great culture within the team. Um, and you know, the the city being great, the fans being great. Um, so you know, you put all those things together, it creates something pretty special. So, um, that’s why. Nikolai, what are your early impressions on the locker room here and just some of the leadership that you that you’ve seen around this team? You obviously knew that there were some pretty good guys on this roster, but what are your early impressions now? Some really good guys now. I mean, I’ve I’ve met everyone in here now. Um, still getting to learn, you know, new things and uh getting to know the guys for for real and and um you know, that’s that’s the exciting part. um all the on stuff, you know, his first day. It was a lot of fun, but we obviously have a lot of work to do and and you know, you look forward to that part as well cuz you know, you you do that as a team and and uh that prepares you for for anything that comes uh throughout the year. So, uh so far it’s been been fun. Big thank you to Nicoers and the Carolina Hurricanes as always for letting us use the audio to hear from the guys and of course Ro Brenmore throughout the season. Those are always awesome. It’s good to hear from Nikolai Elers. So the fact that it’s like for him it’s like yeah the on ice stuff is great because you kind of heard it towards the end. It’s like yeah the on ice stuff is great. you know, it’s day one. You kind of go through the paces, trying to understand the system, but it’s also getting to know the guys. And he said like, you know, it’s a great it’s a great locker room, a lot of great guys. You know, it’s funny when someone askked him, it’s like, you know, what’s kind of like the thing that brought you here? And he’s like, honestly, it’s like it’s kind of hard to say. It’s, you know, great coach, great team. He even talked about great culture. And it’s just exciting to see what, you know, is in store for him. They asked him about the power play. He goes, “Hey, I know what I can do. You know, going to get the opportunity to, you know, kind of show myself and show who I am.” Cuz you saw what he did in Winnipeg. He always was trying to push for PP1, just never got the opportunity. And honestly, I felt like that Elers was never really utilized properly with the Jets. Like he was he played top six minutes, but you kind of felt like that he’s a guy that could drive a line. He’s someone who could drive play and, you know, really be, you know, a catalyst even on the special teams and it just felt like he was just never given that opportunity. Now he comes to Carolina, it’s like, hey, you’re going to be that guy first. You’re going to be that guy to look at that could drive plays on five on five and special teams. So, it’s kind of exciting to see what he can do because we all know what he can do. He can score goals when he’s healthy and is on the ice. Dude scores goals. He puts up points. You’re talking 60 point seasons a lot of the time from Nikolai Eers and hopefully you know if he doesn’t get hurt and plays 75 80 games this year. You could be looking at a guy that could be on a pace for a 75 80 point season. Who really knows? Cuz he was darn near close to point per game last season for the Jets if he stays healthy. He could almost be almost close to a point per game for the Hurricanes. And that’s with being with Sebastian Aaho and Seth Jarvis and you know on the power play too. So, it’s just kind of it’s great to hear for the fact that you get we get the opportunities to hear from guys like Eers, like you know, new new team, new coach, new system, stuff like that. It’s a different environment because you’re talking about being with the Winnipeg Jets for a decade. Now you’re coming to Carolina. Yeah, you got Freddy Anderson and one of your country mates on the team, which definitely helps, but now it’s like it’s a new challenge. It’s a new scenery. It’s a whole new everything. So, it’s going to be very interesting to see how Nikolai Elers is because like I said, you know, first day of camp, you know, he’s on, you know, first line left wing with AO and Jarvis. He’s on the first power play in it, which is which you what we all kind of thought he was going to be like I’ve been saying it since we since the Hurricanes signed him. Hey, be ready to seeing Nikolai Elers a lot, especially on, you know, power play one first line because you get a guy like that in free agency, you’re not going to just sign a guy be like, “Okay, you’re going on the second line.” I mean, nothing wrong with that, but you get a guy like Elers’s caliber, you’re kind of like you’re going to be that guy. You’re going to be that that top six scoring winger that everyone’s been kind of waiting for. Yeah, I mean you have Seth Jarvis, you got Andre Fentureov, but the talent that Eer has, that’s a guy you’re like, “Okay, we went and got him $8.5 million for the next six seasons. You’re going to put him on that top line because you want to get him out there as much as possible and be able to help create chances and score goals and set up his teammates.” And now he’s on the top power play, which was kind of like a no-brainer, it seemed like. So, like I said, it’s great to see that the fact that Eers is getting the opportunity because it’s not given to anyone, but for what he’s done and what he signed up for, it makes sense to have him there. And now we get to kind of see what it looks like with the chemistry. Yeah, it’s day one of camp. Haven’t hit a pre-season game yet, but it’s kind of exciting to see where you’re at with Eers right now. And of course, like you said, you hear him talking about it’s like, yeah, I’m enjoying getting I’ve met everyone, but I’m excited to get to know everyone. on ice stuff is on ice stuff, but it’s also the off ice stuff of, you know, building that chemistry with your teammates because he said he’s like, I’m trying to build the chemistry, you know, trying to look for where chemistry is at and just get to know the guys because you’re with you’re with this team for the next six seasons. You kind of want to build that friendship. Like I said, it helps. You got Frederick Anderson there as a countrymate and they’re already friends, but now you get to meet the other guys and get, you know, get used to being with them and getting used to the area, too. So, it’s just fun to hear from Nicollet Esther and kind of get a gauge of where he’s at after Ding one. So, it’s really amazing to see and I’m excited to see what he can do, you know, over the next few days at camp preseason when that starts and eventually in 20 days when we’re talking about the start of the regular season on October 9th against the New Jersey Devils. So, it’s really exciting. It’s great. We get to hear Nicola ears for the first time after camp, you know, after the first day camp and get his thoughts and everything that’s going on. That being said, we also get to hear from KA Andrew Miller after his first train camp of the Carolina Hurricanes. So, stick around. We’ll talk about that here in a second on a Friday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. Welcome back to segment three of Locked on Hurricanes, your team every day. So, we talked about, you know, thoughts from day one of camp. We just heard from Nikolai Eers and, you know, kind of getting engaged where he’s at after his first day of camp with the Carolina Hurricane. So, now let’s hear from Karen J. Miller and get his thoughts following his first day at camp with the Carolina Hurricanes. So, without further ado, let’s jump into that with Miller right now. Um, I mean, I heard uh numerous diplomatic guys um just talk about how good of an organization it was. um from top down um coaches to the guys um just everybody wholeheartedly was uh kind of pushing for that end goal and for the same goal. So um it’s pretty easy decision for me. Is it kind of nice to get away from that white hot spotlight of that that New York is? Yeah, sure. For sure. I mean I mean how difficult is it to play up there? Um I mean I definitely had it challenges. Um but I know that’s in the past. I’m uh looking forward to being here and uh doing whatever I can to help obviously win. What’s it like coming to a team that’s got a chance to win the Stanley Cup? Obviously New York was a good franchise as well, but you’re right back in the mix here in the East. Yeah. Um obviously familiar with the division, familiar with some of the opponents obviously team change here and there a little bit from year to year, but um for the most part I think uh I don’t know they uh have a lot of faith in this team. Um, I thought, uh, Carolina was always a hard opponent for for me. Um, playing on the other side, I think, uh, um, with their speed, their skill, um, their brains for the game, I think, uh, kind of have that three-headed dragon, three-headed monster. So, um, yeah, really, uh, really good franchise and decided. Is there a motivation for you looking at it like, hey, one team let me go and another team saw something in me to kind of prove people wrong or show that you could be the guy that people projected? Yeah, absolutely. I think uh throughout my five years there, I had uh had a lot of doubters, had a lot of people um voicing their opinion about my game. Um, so I think uh I’m excited to, you know, use that as fuel like you said. Um, had a tough summer um in the gym and uh really like like you said, use that motivation and just try to do whatever I can to get better for this upcoming season. A lot of people have come here saying that there’s a there’s an adjustment here. Just giving your first taste of the systems and things like that. What do you think it was going to take to just kind of adapt to the way this team plays manto man things like that being really aggressive? Yeah, I think uh leaning on your teammates and leaning on the coaches obviously um the guys that have been here in years past. Um I’m going to try to bounce my ideas off of them and try to get as much experience away from the ice um as I can so then when I get on I feel comfortable um with all 20 20ome guys. So um yeah, just asking questions u making sure everybody’s on the same page and uh really just trying to pull the rope in the right direction. Big thank you to KA Miller and the Carolina Hurricanes. And it’s good to hear from Kandre, too, to kind of get an idea of where he’s at. Of course, you know, early conversations of how’s it feel going from the Rangers to the Hurricanes and stuff like that. And he’s like, “Hey, you know, it’s in the past. It is what it is. Now I’m coming to Carolina. I want to help the team win.” And you now he’s going to use you know everything that you know you know as motivation to kind of prove like hey yeah maybe last year wasn’t the greatest and people some people doubting the his skill set but he’s going to use that as the fuel and just getting used to the system too because he even said it perfectly at the end of you know just got to lean on the guys who’ve been here for a long time kind of lean on the coaches you know Rod Bammore and Tim Gleason and all them and just kind of give an understanding of you know how to get used to the high pressure of the defense manto man and stuff like that. So, it’s going to be an adjustment period, but just from the skill set you kind of see with Kandre Millie, it feels like that he could probably fit in within the system well. And we could be looking at a Bree Shay 2.0 story arc where it’s like, you know, people doubted him in New York. He was okay, gets traded to the Carolina Hurricanes and next thing you know, hey, that next level got unlocked. So, you kind of feel like that hopefully that’s the same thing with Miller. It’s good to hear too. fact that, you know, he went after in the off season using, you know, last year and just the doubt as, you know, fuel as a motivator to prove to prove to everyone that, yeah, I am that guy that a lot of people thought I was going to be. And then hopefully with Carolina, it’s taken to the next level. And of course, it helps too when you look at the defense because you got, you know, Jacob Slavven has been here for a very long time, you know, the one of the pillars to the team. Jaylen Chaffield’s turned himself into a top four defenseman on the Hurricanes and he can be a top four a guy on any team really. You know, you got Shane Gossipar and Sean Walker has been there and done that for the last year and they kind of got better this better as the season went along. And of course, like I said, it doesn’t hurt when you got Tim Gleason as your defense coach. So, I think for the Carolina Hurricanes and especially for Miller, this feels like it’s a you know, it’s it’s one day at a time, step by step, because it is a process to get used to this system, especially if you’re a defenseman who’s never really played it for the first time. But you kind of have that sense of that, you know, you’re hoping that it works out and I think it will because you’ve seen from the Carolina Hurricanes have done, they’ve they have done a pretty good job of getting defenseman to come in and kind of buy into this system and show that they can do it. You know, Burn Burns did it really well for a while. Shane Gossber for the the first and he was here even for a few games, he did really well. you know, Douggee Hamilton, you’ve seen with Brett Peshy and Bray Shay and what they did for the Hurricanes for a while. So, you can kind of see that culmination of just the the culture, the coaching, just leaning on your teammates, you know, building that camaraderie. And I think that’s what sets up the Hurricanes really well on the defense. That’s why it’s been their bread and butter for so long. The identity of this team is the defense. And now you get to see with a couple new young guys and Miller and Nikesian and just seeing how they’re going to progress as the season goes along and getting used to the system, you know, and you know, you and heard on Kane’s cast with Shane and Mike, you know, it takes, you know, 40, 50, 60 games to get used to the system, but once you get in it and once you get used to it, then you’re kind of dialed in. So that’s kind of what you’re feeling with Miller that the hope is like, okay, he’s just got to take that next step as the season goes along. So yeah, will there be growing pains? Yeah, because you’re getting used to a new system and the Hurricanes play a very high pressure man-to-man defense and it does take a little while to get used to, but honestly, I feel like, you know, where the Hurricanes are at, I think they’re in a great spot, and it’s exciting to hear from Miller and kind of get his, you know, thoughts on what’s going on. Yeah, I’m going to use this as a motivation. You got to lean on my teammates, get used to the system. and he’s like, “Hey, I’m just kind of leaving New York in the past.” And, you know, it’s, you know, that motivation of, “Hey, you know, one team wanted to trade me, another team wanted to get me, and he’s going to use that.” So, it’s great to hear that, you know, he’s already, you know, kind of, you know, liking the area, liking the fact that he’s with a team that wants him to be there. And it’s, you know, we’re talking eight seasons with Kandre Miller. So, overall, like I said, the same thing with Ears. It’s exciting to see what is going to happen for Miller and how the season goes along because you’re talking at least six years with Eers and Miller on the team. Miller’s here for another for a full eight seasons and matching Slavven’s contract in terms of you at least for the term. So, it’s just an exciting time to see what you’re looking at the defense. Of course, now we get to see, you know, we got to see what the new guys are like on the ice. CI first day of training camp, but you know before long it’s first preseason game, then we go through the preeason, then we get the regular season starting and then we go from there. So overall, it’s just it’s so great the fact that we’re now we’re talking about on ice stuff. We’re hearing from the guys as well. It’s not just, you know, sitting here and kind of speculating and kind of guessing what’s going to happen. Yeah, there we’re still going to speculate because it’s it’s train camp. It’s preeason. You know, games don’t count. You know, we don’t know what the lines are going to be come opening night on October 9th, but at least we’re kind of getting an idea of what’s what. And like I said, we talked about I said in segment, you know, one earlier, you know, we could see Kandre Miller on the second power play unit with Alexander Nesian, Jackson Blake, Logan St, and Taylor Hall. That’s not a bad spot for Miller to be in. It’s like, hey, we want you, we think your offensive side is so good. We want you to be part of that power play. And it ends the second pairing with another, you know, highly offensive guy in the two new guys on defense being paired up together. And that’s very exciting to see. And overall, like I said, it’s just great. We’re talking about on ice stuff and we’re talking about lines. We’re talking about, you know, schemes and stuff like that. And we’re also hearing from the guys, too. We’re not just kind of wondering now. It’s like, okay, what are these guys saying? How are the vibes? How are, you know, what’s the thought process going on? So, it’s great to hear. It’s super exciting.
