Since ’68: Charles Barkley Drops 56 In Golden State | Phoenix Suns
We are underway. Game three in Oakland. A victory by the Suns. And the season ends for Golden State. A Warrior win and they stay alive in the play on Friday. Barkley from 15. Swish. It’s good. Well, I remember going to the Warriors bench and I’m talking to Don Nelson. I said, “Don, I got like 10 points in the first three, four minutes of game.” He says, “We’re not going to W.” Out to Barkley. Fake the three. Wants to shoot it again. Got it. Shazam. What a first quarter for Sir Charles. 27 points. Did not miss a shot. 11 for 11 from the field. Three three-pointers. [Music] What? He get 56 or something like that against the Warriors in one series. It’s just what he did. he could do that because he could do stuff like that sometimes, you know, you let him be a minute late to the bus. I said, “Don, I’m ask you this one more time.” And Don Ellen, who’s one of the great coaches and characters in here, he he looked at me, he says, “Charles, I’m going to tell you this one more time. We’re not going to W.” Because when I go back and look at it, I almost had a triple double those first two games. Got a guy named Don Nelson saying, “No one, he doesn’t need to double team Charles.” and he said, “If you can beat us, beat us.” And we still laugh about that story to this day. Charles is just a unique individual, biggest heart in the world, one of the greatest athletes. Forget basketball all time and just as a basketball player, guy 6’4, 6’5 to be able to do the things that he did. Barkley handles the ball, starts to move back on Gatling, keeps coming, now falls back, puts the shot up and in off the glass from 16. He got it. This is his NBA playoff careerh high. There’s very few nights where you just shoot everything and it goes in. I was very fortunate tonight. And hey, I mean, when you just shooting it and they all going in, it’s it’s unbelievable feeling. He’s demonstrated throughout his career that he’s a Superman in many ways. And uh bad back uh question mark in all. He um he put on a great show. So he won Byron Houston, gave him the business. Uh Chris Weber gave him the visit after he dropped his rookie trophy, rookie of the year trophy. And we’re just like, if you think you don’t need double team Charles, go right ahead. Moves it to baseline. Fade away 15-footer. Good. A beautiful fall away. Fade away shot. He said, “We’re not doubling you. You’re not going to have a triple double.” He said, “You can get 30 points, but you’re not going to get eight or nine assists.” I don’t even know if incredible is a a good enough word, but I mean, he just he came ready to play from a jump start. We milked him every single play. Whenever we needed a bucket in any quarter, he did what was necessary. Made good rebounds, good blocks, shots. He was incredible. He had that rockstar status. A lot of us had a lot of accolades, but we had never played with somebody of his caliber. And uh it was really, really a special uh I think experience for all of us. Charles told us, matter of fact, we’re going to go home. we going to end this, sweep him, and go home and rest. And he told Paul, “Give me the ball.” So once we found out that he’s not going to get double team, he gave him the ball. When you’re scoring like that, obviously, you know, everybody’s telling you how many points you got, I was feeling it. That’s what I remember the most going by the bench. I said, “Don, are you sure you’re not going to double me?” And he and he, like I said, we still laugh about to this day. He’s like, “Charles, I’m telling you, for the fourth time, we’re not going to double you.” Here comes Charles Barkley out. 56 points in the ball game. His individual careerhigh gets a hug from KJ Marley. Big win for the Suns here. Big game for Charles Barkley.
En route to a first round sweep in the 1994 Western Conference Playoffs, Charles Barkley has a monster game totaling 56 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block to lead the Phoenix Suns.
