The Cleveland Guardians beat Skubal, SWEPT the Tigers & are still PEAKING at the perfect time

DoorDash, it’s almost the weekend. It’s time to look back and crown this week’s MVP on DoorDash just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks, saving more every time you order. These players delivered when it matters the most, so let’s break it down. If you watched uh Josh Allen and the Bills last night, Josh Allen delivered in a big way. And when the pressure was on, they came through, no hesitation or delay. If you’ve been watching week after week, that performance isn’t a fluke. Josh Allen is on a streak. And just like Josh Allen delivered for the Bills, DoorDash delivers for your Saturdays with DoorDash streaks. You save every Saturday you order, stack it up all season, and you could save up to $250 including a $100 in DoorDash credits. Order this Saturday, keep the streak alive. Fuel your game day only with DoorDash, Terms do applied, promo period through 11/18. All right guys, I know it’s a Browns Friday, but we are starting with the Cleveland Guardians who have won 13 of their last 15 games. They just completed the sweep of the Detroit Tigers, cutting the AL Centro lead from 6.5 down to 3.5. They beat Skuble yesterday in pretty dramatic fashion. Shout out to Big Christmas, Jason. If you’re gonna go against Scoubba, you might as well put your 1 in 100 chance of hitting a home run in the lineup, but guess what he did? He hit the home run, the only run they scored off Scoubba, Jose. But two days after his birthday, it’s the go-ahead 2-run home run. They end up winning the game 3-1 and just like that, Jason. We were so out on this team. Bo was ready to fire everybody in the front office. They lost 10 in a row, and since, since that 10 game losing streak, they had the 3rd best record in all of baseball. How do you explain it? And what do you make of this 13 out of 15, 1.5 out of the wild card, 3.5 out of the division? — Where do the guardian stand
— moving forward? It’s baseball and it’s a really long season. Uh, the question is this run sustainable, man, if you count these guys out at this point, you’re doing it at your own peril. So it wasn’t that long ago the postseason did not look at all realistic. I think all of us said, no, this isn’t happening this year. They didn’t think they’re making the playoffs. They traded Shane Bieber. Like they thought they were out, uh, but when you pitch the way that they’re pitching. It gives you a chance and you know their starters ERA is just it’s under 2 over this last stretch here and and Boston lost again yesterday so now you’re a game and a half out of the wild card. Detroit, I mean, I think the division is very much in play. Normally you wouldn’t say this with a week to go, but the fact that you’ve got 3 at home with Detroit next week, Detroit is reeling right now. The Braves are playing well. Atlanta is going to Detroit this weekend. Uh, yeah, I mean anything’s possible, you know, right there in Minnesota, the, the 4 game set with the Twins, obviously I, I don’t think they have to win every game for the rest of the season to make the playoffs, but they still do have an incredibly thin margin for error, uh, but when you get the starting pitching like they’ve gotten and Tanner Bibi talked about it after the game last night, I mean, Bibi’s been sensational in September he’s had a terrible year and he’ll be the first to tell you he’s had a terrible year, but his last three starts have been dominant. Uh, there you see Cantillo’s numbers. There’s a funny story. Uh, Zach Meisel had it today on the athletic. It was great talking about sort of where this came from and, and Bibi in particular, you know, Cantillo was struggling with his commands, struggling to throw strikes. They sent him a AAA and said attack the strike zone. Figure out how to attack the strike zone, and Joey’s done that since he, since he’s back up and you see the numbers right there over over the last 15 games. Cantil a 1980s pitch and ERA under 1, and Bibi sort of asked him what’s the difference. And Canillo said he’s throwing a few fastballs and it’s really I mean we talked about sports is such a mental game and the mentality of it and Tanner sort of described like sometimes you throw a fastball it’s like oh man I don’t want you to hit this and we’ve talked about on the show before about sometimes he starts to nibble and his pitch count goes up and it’s the mindset of here it is, I dare you to hit it and it it sounds so simple and it’s like no it can’t be that no it can be that. Just because of the way that these guys attack hitters and how aggressive Bibe’s been, uh, and was again yesterday, you know, the Tigers get the early run off them and, and they have 2nd and 3rd. I mean, you’re down 1-0 against Scoubal. Tigers have 2nd and 3rd, nobody out. It looks like it’s gonna be a big inning, but the Guardians just made all the plays and they don’t run into outs. They make the plays in the field. They’re clean defensively. They get dominant starting pitching, and that’s how you turn a 15.5 game deficit. To 3.5, it’s a remarkable story. It’s a great run. All the credit to them. It’s been a really hard year for them, obviously when you talk about losing Close, losing Luis Ortiz, it’s just been, it feels like it’s been like 4 seasons in one for these guys, and here we are with a week to go and they’re right there in it, man. Hey listen, ever since he crashed out in that dugout, yeah, Bobby looked like he was like, you know what, I’m gonna go ahead and lean into this right now, um. Let’s talk about the Detroit Tigers. Like this is, this is the headline in the Detroit Free Press. Detroit’s latest loss to the uh Cleveland Guardians has them crashing to earth. OK, this is officially getting scary is the first line, right? You lose this game 3 to 1, um, and like you said, they got to run early. And when you got a dude like Scoop on the, on, on the mound, it’s like, all right, you get the one, you starting to count your lives because now it’s like, OK, if you get the 3 runs, it’s almost lights out, you know, we might, let’s let’s get, let’s get, let’s get up out of here. And as soon as I’m sitting there, I’m watching this and I’m like, man, Tyuss was joking about Big Christmas, right? And Christmas in July and all that good stuff and I’m like, bro, I’m gonna have to hear this man’s mouth. I’m gonna have to hear this cause that was, it’s almost like you, you coach baseball. It’s like putting the one kid in that, you know, it, it’s at the end of the game, he never really plays. You put him in, you’d be trying to hide him in the right field. Try to hide him in the outfield so the ball don’t come to him and he’s up against another kid start best pitcher, he’s on the traveling squad. He closes his eyes, swings the ball back, and all of a sudden guys just start cheering. He’s like, what happened? Yeah, you hit the ball over the fence. That’s wild work for him to hit that home run. But the crazy part about this is I said yesterday. If they sweep the Tigers, I will officially pick them to um to make the playoffs, and I, I got them. I have to keep, I gotta stay to my word. And now Boston loses a game and a half is light. A game and a half now you in the, in the territory where now you got Detroit again. So if you’re the Tigers coming up here in a couple of weeks, these, this sweep is looming large in the back of your head. You’re like, oh. We can’t beat these dudes right now. And when you get the most delusional people on the earth, the most delusional people on earth are wide receivers and baseball teams that get hot. And the Guardians right now so they, they, they, they’re the hottest team in the game and when you play in hot baseball, there’s nothing that really could stop you in terms of feeling like every single game you go out there, you got an opportunity to win. It is absolutely crazy with the Guardian for the season. Now the offense in the last 15 games has been better, but for the season, this is the team with the lowest team batting average in baseball, the 2nd lowest OPS they’ve scored the 4th fewest runs in the entire major leagues. They are 1.5 game out of a wild card spot and 3.5 games out of the division. How have they won? Well, the offense has gotten a little better. They’ve gotten some really timely hits, but and, if you pull up these numbers, yeah, exactly right here. Over the last 15 starts, the Guardian starters have a combined ERA of 1.53 with an almost with a better than 3 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio. Look at the individual numbers from these guys. Steve, take the next graphic here. If you go down the line, Bay he’s been an ace. 21 in the 2/3 innings pitch with a 125 ERA. Williams, 18 innings pitch, 1.5 ERA. Cano, sub 1 ERA in over 19 innings pitch. So Soi and Messi both lower than 1.5. Logan Allen, your worst of the six starters, and I don’t know how much the six-man rotation Jason’s played a role in these guys down the stretch feeling more rested and recovered for each start, but he’s been the worst. Of the 6 and his ERA is 36. That’s right around league average and maybe even slightly above if you go into the minutia of, of the exact decimal point. But the starting pitching has been incredible, and this is after the first, I don’t know, 140 games, Jason, where we had complaints about the inconsistency of the starters. Gavin Williams, great start, bad start, great start, bad start, great start, bad start. Tanner Bibi, start, start, start, start. Lately it so and then like you say, Canillo got sent down to the minors. So Sony was great but not good. It’s been great again. Parker Messi has been a revolution since being called up and we talk about this Guardian’s pitching factory time in time in year in, year out. Jason Carwallis does an incredible job. If there’s someone better in the business, you gotta tell me who it is because I’m frankly not sure that person exists. But what they have done with this rotation with the unproven top end talent, getting these young guys and Messi and Cantelo. To step up and pitch like aces over the last 2.5 weeks. It is simply incredible, and they are overcoming an offense that even with its Uh, added production of late is still below league average in every statistic you’re looking at. The pitching has been that good, guys, and I’m not sure it’s 100% sustainable moving forward, Jason. They’re pitching that well right now. I’m not sure a 153 ERA as a staff is sustainable for another 10 games and into the playoffs, but. I don’t know who’s gonna fall off. They all are pitching with extreme confidence right now and that’s almost as important as your stuff. Yeah, I mean, I, no, I don’t think you’re, they’re gonna pitch to a sub 2 ERA for the for the rest of the season. I know that’s only a week, but then into the postseason if they make the postseason, I, I don’t think that’s fair to expect that out of them. But at the same time, I mean, enjoy it while it’s here and, and ride it out while it lasts, and it, it’s just, it’s all the little things and you mentioned Noel, you know, that’s the perfect guy to throw against Scoubal because you’re not, it’s gonna be hard for you to string hits together. And they don’t have very many threats who are gonna hit the ball out of the park, he runs into one, and he did. — I saw a stat
— real quick, real quick on the home run. Skuble has faced over 3000 batters in his major league career. Noel became the 3rd player to hit an 0-2 homer off school ball. That’s in over 3000 batters. That’s ridiculous. Just the 3rd and it was a good pitch. It wasn’t a bad pitch. — He just has stupid
— power. At first I thought it was a fastball. I’m like, why would anybody throw this guy a fastball and it wasn’t a fastball, but he located it well. Like it was, it was on the corner. He didn’t catch the plate. And Noel just has big power and you know, who knows what kind of player Noel is gonna become. It doesn’t matter for in this moment. This is who he is. There’s a ton of power there and there’s a ton of swing and miss there, but you’re not gonna, you’re not gonna string together 3 hits against Terri Skubel in any more than likely. To where you’re gonna be able to scratch runs across, you have to be able to hit the ball out of the park against them to to have success, and they ran into one and then they get them out of the game. That’s really if you could just pitch to a draw and get Skuble out of the game and it’s a tie, it’s a win. They were the the the guardians remind me some sort of like the, uh, they’re like the they’re like the JV version of the Indiana Pacers in basketball. Like you’re like dude. We lost to the Pacers. Like if you lose to the Knicks, that means you lost to the Yankees. If you lose to the Red Sox or you’re like, OK, we, we, we, you know, we lost to the Boston Celtics, but if you lose to the Guardians, with their, uh, like just, just the lack of overall sticks power and even able to put the ball in play where you can get runs. You’re like, how do we have our best pitcher on the mound and we let this guy come up here and hit a home run. It just makes you feel like one of those things where it, it’s almost like we, we live in Cleveland, we’re like, come on man, I, I mean this only happens to us. No, uh, the guardians do that to people and, and you think about it. 1.5 games is like. If you get it under 2, now you don’t have to win every game. I don’t feel like before we were sitting there saying, oh, they gotta win every single game. They better win all of these. Well, look, now you’re in a, in a game and a half where if you’re the Boston Red Sox, you, you better start winning. — Like you can’t afford to have no
— slip ups. Press on Boston too now. It’s not just solely on Cleveland. — Boston’s
— collapsing. Boston was a shoe-in a few weeks ago to make the playoffs and now. There you see it. The guardians are a game back in the loss column. So yeah, a lot of these teams are feeling the pressure. And of course Cleveland closes the season against Texas, who’s behind them a few days ago that looked like it was gonna be a big series. Now the Rangers are fading just a little bit, so it may not be as important, uh, in terms of head to head, but it very well could determine who makes the playoffs still if if Cleveland gets in or not, uh, but yeah, I mean huge series obviously at Minnesota. Four game set over the weekend and they need the Tigers. Oh yeah, absolutely, honestly they probably need to sweep Minnesota honestly because I don’t know that it’s realistic to sweep the Tigers again, although we said that once you are gonna see Scouble again. Uh, I just, I, you, if they do have a very thin margin for error. You don’t wanna blow it on the twins when you’ve got the Tigers and the Rangers coming after that. I see what you’re saying that’s nasty work. You have to get at minimum, you gotta get 3 in Minnesota and realistically it’s so hard to say you got sweep. It’s so hard to sweep in baseball, but this is the position that they’re in like, you know, they sort of did this themselves because of the 10 game losing streak and they, they didn’t play well for long stretches this year. So this is where they’re at, uh, minimum of 3 games in Minnesota over the weekend. You’d love to see a sweep. I don’t know who Boston has this weekend. I didn’t look to see. — I can tell you right now if you
— give me, um, but they’re feeling it. — This is
— if, if they, if they, if they, — I mean if
— they, if, — if you get
— the. OK, well, they, they should do well in that. Uh, Tampa’s out of it, but you know if Detroit drops 1 or 2 at home against Atlanta, the division is very much in play and then you come back, you get, you get Detroit at home. And you and a couple of within a couple of games, those are playoff games. — The game’s a playoff final
— 10 games are playoffs, the guardians make the playoffs or not, and ESPN has been a 25.6% chance to make the playoffs. I mean it was it was it was when we did this last time it was 11.6%. They jumped 14 points up more than doubled since the last time we checked on it. To me this this Minnesota series scares me because all season long the Guardians have cast us out, said don’t worry about us. They slowly reeled us back in and as soon as they’re about to hook us, the fish gets off the hook and then we get reeled out again. So for whatever reason, I am cautiously, uh, I don’t say pessimistic, it’s not the right word. The Guardian should win 3 or 4, hopefully they sweep, but. My gut tells me I’ve been hurt by this team already. I’ve already jumped on the bandwagon and been kicked off twice. I’m scared to get back on a third time, but with the way they’re pitching, Parker Messi’s been incredible for a rookie, Jason, and even his teams have gotten a little tape on him, his numbers haven’t fallen off from that first great start against Arizona, and he’s been a revolution. 24 strikeouts before walk 133. Rookie still terrify you, especially with his little experiences he has. Pablo Lopez is a really good pitcher. He’s a lot of had a lot of injuries this year. The twins are terrible. Like they, they are bad, so you really need to take 3 if not 4 from them. But yeah, I mean Messick’s been terrific. Hopefully he can keep it going, but rookies, rookies should scare you in general, um, and the bullpen’s been great, you know, the, I thought Vo’s done a nice job of these guys have put in a lot of innings, but he’s been able to balance Gaddis and Cade at the back end, and he’s gone to Heron at times where it’s like, OK. And it, it just, it always seems to work like yesterday I was aggravated Manzardo was in the lineup. Now Scoubel is one of the few lefties that, OK, you could sit Kyle, but you started Nolan Jones in right field. You could put Noel in right and you could put Manzardo at first, but it doesn’t matter. And, and Rocchio watching Roky hit a fly ball down the right field line, it looked like he’s jogging in the third. if he’s busting out of the box and if he’s running full speed. it might be an inside the park home run and because of the situation you think we’ll just send them anyway and they didn’t send him and Hedges is coming up and you’re like, but then Hedges draws a walk and it it doesn’t matter. Like they just figure it out it no matter what you like, man, I can’t believe that happened or I can’t believe they did that. They find a way to to — to overcome
— I think Vogue gets a lot of credit for that. I was just gonna say that. We’ve had our qualmsa vote this year. A lot of the platooning has annoyed a lot of people on this panel, including myself, the bullpen usage. But you know what, at the end of the day, it’s all about, does your team play hard as can be. And does it work, right? The results more than anything else and right now all the buttons he’s pushing are working. The guardians should have been out of this a long time ago, to your point earlier, Jason, they traded Shane Bieber at the deadline. They told you what they thought. 2nd year in a row, by the way, a teams traded at the deadline, traded away a star pitcher. Jack Flaherty with the Tigers last year. They catch fire. The Guardians traded Shane Bieber. They catch fire, but man, he, he deserves a ton of credit and we don’t, we’ve done a bad job as a show and as a producer, I’ll take, I’ll take a hand up and my bad on this one. I’m not giving him his due credit because although he’s not perfect, no manager is. The fact that this team, despite losing Class A and Ortiz and the 10 game losing streak and trading away their ace at the deadline, they are right in the thick of this with 10 games to play, and I don’t think any of us expected that to be the outcome in the middle of July. — So I mean this team
— vote, my bad. This team was a heartbeat from trading Stephen Kwan at the deadline, and I, I think the biggest credit for for Vote is holding this thing together through Classa and Ortiz like those. That was those were major catastrophes within the organization and frankly they probably would have, I, I know they would have traded class like they were selling and Closi would have been dealt had that not come down literally days before the trade deadline and to and to navigate those storms and to keep these guys together, these are not normal injuries like this is not a pitcher blowing out his elbow, which happens all the time. You treat it like an injury in terms of, OK, he’s here today now we don’t have that guy tomorrow and we’re not gonna have him mentally it’s different. This is totally different and this is, these are things that not only have the guardians not experienced. There aren’t many organizations and sports that have navigated this gambling accusations quite like this. There have been a few here and there, not like this. I mean you had pitchers in the clubhouse who were basically accused of throwing games in a sense of throwing throwing bad pitches on purpose and it gets to the fabric of the game at that point and to be able to keep these guys together and ride out losing streaks, um, and, and just keep the boat above. The water, uh, it’s a, it’s a huge credit to him. Coaches are different, right? Different, different responsibilities for different sports. I was just gonna go, yeah, it’s like kind of like I respect it because. They could have took, I mean, the game is different like in, in, in, in football and basketball, if you lose, you get the first pick, and baseball’s necessarily not like I don’t, I don’t believe you lose the most games, you get the first pick. Baseball’s gone to a bit of a lottery now like like the NBA. — So
— it’s, it’s kind of like, you know, those are different sports and it’s a more of a, a finite amount of games or, or, or smaller sample size of games, but when you talk about baseball. It’s, it’s crazy that he got them, he, it’s almost like they got in trouble and he was like, you know what, screw it, we ain’t got nothing to lose, right? And then they had the losing streak after that. So you mean to tell me like that was a flat line, right? Like you, you got the all the embarrassment, mind you, the guardians believed themselves to be above a lot of the fray. You don’t see scandals with the Guardians, right? For it to happen not once, but in allegations of it happening twice, then you, you couple that the fact with, you know, they, they’re struggling at the plate, they’re struggling, they, they might be sellers at the deadline, but then to get guys to come back from that, lose, lose 10 games, lose 11 games, look like they’re out of it till they had them guys come back. That says a lot about his willingness to not. can see anything like it, this would have been the, the most easy thing in the world to say, it just wasn’t our year. We do that a lot. Hey, hey, look, you know, just happened. It’s just not our year, but guess what? He got them to pull back, he got them, and now you get them down the runway and now when you go from all of the stuff that they had going on to now you’re winning all these games, now the confidence shot is even greater because you came from such such a far depth to get where they need to go. Now they still are 3.5 games back and this is important to point out when I give you this number, but the largest ever. Division lead, I looked this up yesterday. Winner of a division from where they started at 12.5 games. The gardens were 15.5. That’s crazy. Uh, let me, let me just confirm that. They was, uh, we, we was laughing when it happened. It was like 20, we was like, oh this is a 20 spot. You, — you don’t come back from a 20 piece
— nugget. It was, it was 14 games. It was the 1978 Yankees. 1215 was second, which was the uh Mariners in ’95. So 14 games was the largest division deficit to come back and win the division. The Guardians were 15.5 games back. Now they’re 3.5 games back, and I saw this stat from uh Cleveland Guardian’s perspective on Twitter. Through their first two seasons and granted Vo still has 10 games to go, so it’s not not final. Francona had a 5:46 win percentage, no playoff wins and a 2nd and 3rd place finish in the AL Central. Vote as of right now has a 5531% slightly better than Francona, a first place finish in the AL Central, they’re currently 2nd, and he’s won 4 postseason games. I’m not saying he’s going to beat Terry Francona. But this is Vogt’s first stint as a manager. Francona obviously had previous experience elsewhere before coming to Cleveland, and he’s putting up incredibly similar production from a win-loss standpoint that one of the best managers baseball’s ever seen. So it’s been a hell of a start for both, probably deserves more credit than we’ve given them, and what the guardians are doing right now is simply incredible. — Any last
— thoughts? Yeah, I think. It it’s it’s kinda almost like, you know, it, it sobers you up and it tells you like, hey man, you look at the Guardians and then you watch, you know, the Cavs and we watched the Browns, right? And I, you know, we always comparing them. And It just goes to show you. That the other two teams, even for what their, what their downfalls is or their shortcomings. They produce at a level that’s not even close to the Browns. They produce and do things that the Browns have not, like the Browns don’t, they never showed this type of resilience though. I mean, the, the level of what they’re doing right now coming back from down that much, they didn’t put on no seasons. Like the Cavs, yeah, they may be a little bit. You know, the Cavs are, are, you know, they go out there in the rounds that, that we thought they should have went and advanced a little further in the, in the, in the playoffs. But when you take a look at them across the board, there is a little something to be said about why the Guardians get a little upset if, if they’re not playing well at the time because they feel like They have not built up any, any good grace, any, any, you know, currency with the fans and the media because as soon as they’re done or they’re not doing what they don’t want us to do, it’s immediately all they finished is wiped out. But we stay loyal to these browns like there’s nothing and they, they, they produce. I, I can’t lie, man. I mean, this is, this is a very impressive feat that they’re doing, especially given the fact that they had all this adversity because the Browns would have folded up like a tent if you got two people talking about gambling. That, that would have, they would have folded that up at game 3. They’d be talking about 2028.

Jose Ramirez hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh inning after Tarik Skubal was replaced and the surging Cleveland Guardians swept the slumping Detroit Tigers with a 3-1 win on Thursday.

Cleveland has won seven straight to close within 3 1/2 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers with a little more than a week left in the regular season. The teams are scheduled for three more games Sept. 23-25.

Detroit has lost six of its last seven games and 15 of 22, turning an 11 1/2-game cushion into a lead that isn’t comfortable.

Returning from an injury scare last week, Skubal gave up one run, seven hits and struck out nine over six innings.

The reigning AL Cy Young Award and pitching Triple Crown winner was replaced by right-hander Troy Melton in the seventh in a 1-all game. Nine pitches later, Ramirez broke the tie with a 368-foot shot to right.

Cleveland’s Jhonkensy Noel hit a game-tying solo homer in the fourth.

Tanner Bibee (11-11) gave up one run and four hits while striking out eight over six innings. Tim Herrin and Kolby Allard followed with two innings of scoreless relief and Hunter Gaddis pitched the ninth for his third save. | https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401697194

  1. Steven is Manager of the year simple zero power hitters in the outfield sh*t besides Jose zero power on the whole team . Give up Josh Naylor and Bieber , Lose Clase and Ortiz and your in the playoff race it's ridiculous. Terry Francona gets the Reds in he'll probably get it cause they missed the playoffs since Pete Rose basically 💯But wow GREAT GREAT JOB STEVEN 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯👊🤑SIGN THIS MAN FOR THE NEXT DECADE FLAT OUT…….

  2. I think it’s interesting how these guys are the most negative people when it’s not even all that bad and then once things are good they’re acting like they predicted it smh

  3. I just cant give Vogt too much credit. Jose is the leader, he is the one that pushes the guy cuz the way he plays and talks. Vogt has managed in the most typical way possible, and even pulling guys early, not playing guys enough when they have earned it etc. they been winning despite Vogt imo

  4. So happy to hear prolonged positive Guardians talk. The season has been a roller coaster ride, but you can't say it hasn't been fun.

Just please pitching staff, keep pretending you are the 1995 Atlanta Braves staff for another month or so.

  5. It's very possible they're going to make the playoffs watch it unfold they're playing outstanding baseball.. 3.5 games out of first place.. they're on a serious mission.

  6. The Tigers and Red Sox play each other the last three games of the season, which means the Guards will get help to close the gap on either the division or wild card

  7. If they make the playoffs as the top team in the division, you’ll see from me the betting win from DraftKings that I placed right after the All-Star game when they were 15 games or so out of first.
