Coach Mike Tomlin Postgame Press Conference (Week 2 vs Seattle Seahawks) | Pittsburgh Steelers

and we will um I compliment those guys on on a winning performance. Um you know, it was still a ball game and there’s a lot to to be desired certainly. Um but it’s just interesting. We’re in a close ball game last week and a special teams play broke it open in our favor. Uh this week we’re in a close ball game and and a special teams play broke it open in our opponent’s favor and I just think that’s that’s life in this business at this level. Um I got a desire for us to be cleaner. Uh so you can’t po point to singular plays as you know pivotal points in the game etc. And so we got a lot of work to do. Um and that’s just to put it succinctly. Um had some injuries. Loudermilk had a had a high ankle. Uh highmith had a high ankle. Patrick Queen had a rib injury. Um Peyton Wilson was just heat related fatigue. Uh he missed the block a time. A couple other guys went in and out. We’re capable of return capable of returning James Pierre kind of being one of them. Um but really disappointed. Um we’ll get better. We have to uh we’ll begin that process tomorrow. Questions. Mike, what happened on that kickoff that they recovered? Just poor judgment by a young player. That’s something you specifically work on in practice every day of our lives. Mike, that Seattle seemed to be going at you pretty aggressively across the middle. What What happened there? or what more could have been done um early in the game or just in general? Yeah, in general. Yeah, you know, um they made some quality plays. Um at different points in time, um we absorbed some some attrition and probably limited our communication and thus our call sheet. Um but that’s just a part of the game. That’s what you do. Um and so, you know, you compliment them. Mike, is it is it injuries that are catching up with the defense? What’s caused in second? You know, we were we were down some bodies going into the game. We absorbed some attrition in game and many of those guys are new and so it’s a challenge. We certainly um are capable of better than that. Um and so we’ll keep working. Mike, you had fourth and one or less than one at midfield late in the third quarter. What was your thought process of kicking it there? It was a 14-4 game. Um you know, neither offense was lighting up at that juncture. As I mentioned, we had absorbed some attrition on defense and so I want to protect that group and keep them on a long field. How concerned are you about the protection that Rogers is getting right now? You know, I’m concerned about a lot of things. Um, we didn’t perform to to the level that we desired, not only in that space, but in a in a lot of spaces. And so certainly there’s a lot that has my attention um leading into this upcoming week. Mike, from a layman’s perspective, it seems at times uh offensive line didn’t hold their blocking long enough and also at times Aaron didn’t get rid of the ball quick enough. So, could could they come to a happy medium in terms of maybe correcting that succinctly? Certainly, uh two things are capable of being true. Coach, you had 59 yards rushing before that last drive. What is needed to get this running game going? You know, uh we got to possess the ball more. Um certainly we’re capable of running it better. Um but but time of possession, our lack thereof, and our opponent’s ability to has been a component of that equation or that discussion the last two weeks. Things stand out on why the other teams seem to be having a lot of long runs against you. No, we just got to be better. Um and we will be. What did you feel was what was allowing them to be so successful some of those big chunk plays, especially on third downs, you know? Um we didn’t eliminate some known eligibles, man. I thought particularly early we didn’t do enough to minimize 11 on possession downs. I thought we improved in that area and that’s why we were able to settle it down. They went down the field and scored on the first drive, but you know, it was pretty nip and tuck after that for the remaining two quarters until, you know, it got the game got broken open. Can Jaylen Warren handle an even heavier load? I’m sure I’m certain he can. Um I know that he had a good week’s work. I know that he felt good going into today and he expressed that and so um I see no reason why he can’t. Your rush defense coach in terms of last week and this week I mean see two backto-back 100 yard rushers up. Was there that much difference between the Jets and the team you saw today or is that just the teams being able to just beat? You know I don’t I hadn’t made any comparisons. I was just as I sit here today I’m you know digesting what transpired in stadium today and we got to be better. What do you feel like teams are doing to minimize TJ’s impact and and what can you do to get him some more looks? You know, when they when they’re successfully running the ball, they minimize their one-dimensional passing circumstances and and so I assume that you’re asking about his ability to impact the game from a rush standpoint. And so, it’s obvious what it does. Uh when they’re on schedule and they’re running the ball effectively, you minimize your opportunity to get one-dimensional pass rushes individually and collectively. Anyone else? All right. Thanks, guys.

  1. The Jets were terrible with the Bills so what does that say about the Steelers as a team just winning by a few points against the Jets. Steelers have a lot of internal issues this year with all phases of the game. Steelers are not the competitive team right now. Hope they get it back to the level Steeler nation has come to expect.

    🤨

  2. Give up 30 points to the Jets and Seahawks and you will give up 60 points to the Ravens/Bills if things don’t change. Jalen Ramsey doin his part.

  3. WAKE UP ART !! Tomlin won 1 championship with Cowhers players and coaches. Let's not forget Tomlin came here as D specialist and still needed LeBeau to win playoff games. He is and has always been WAY over his head as a HC.

  4. This will be the year Tomlin gets ā€œresignedā€. You added all these pieces to our defense and we got worse? And the offense hasn’t improved and it’s not even bad QB play? Our Oline is trash an we have 1 NFL receiver on our roster. A Roster that’s usually LOADED with dog WR’s things are going downhill in Pitt…

  5. There comes a time when it's time to move on with your life's work. It's time to wrap it up, Mike. You're embarrassing yourself and this team.

  6. These reporters are throwing softballs. The question should be 1, how did this defense allow a second 30+ point game in 2 games when last year it happened twice in 16 games.

  7. The only thing we are productive in is injuries and self inflictions. We are great in those areas. Next week will be no different rinse and repeat with more injuries. This team STILL AGAIN is in need of a identity and we have a better chance of hitting the mega million

  8. I know people will say that a decent coach needs a QB to go far in the league, and this is documented and true. But imagine if a good QB had a good coach. Ben Roethlisberger got hosed for years having a bad coach. Remember when media and game callers would make fun of Roethlisberger for drawing up plays in the dirt. This happened immediately following the QB talking with the coach on the sidelines, and the QB deciding that, hey, this guy has no idea what he is talking about. I better do it myself and come up with a play to go score to try and win this game. There are many indicators throughout the years that indicate that Tomlins was NEVER a good coach. He just rode on the shirttails of a good QB that he had nothing to do with in aquiring. But the mike Tomlin backers will always say that mike Tomlin won over half of the games in the season, while saying the players lost in the playoffs. So I hope I made it real clear for you that Tomlins is not what you hoped for as a coach,no matter what the media is telling you to think. In the last 7 games this guy eked out 1 win. Most of those games are mike Tomlins team getting run the hell over and are easy to beat.

  9. I wish alex highsmith could stay healthy I feel like he’s only ever good for 10 games a year. We are missing a lot of depth in the defense right now it’ll turn around if we could get the full 53 man roster healthy. None of what you’ve watched the past two weeks is a problem with coaching

  10. This is why the Steelers fan base is trash you guys are 1-1 it’s only week 3 and oh by the way coach tomlin has a great record after a loss and last week the loss came from the special teams TD that put them down 10 pts if that didn’t happen they probably would’ve either tied the game or went up by 4 that drive or played field position and eventually would’ve got it done things happen the Steelers play NE next week and they have a terrible o line so this can be a game where they figure some things out yall think you’re supposed to win every game and it doesn’t work like that I’m a ravens fan and the way we lost week 1 I was mad but I never dog my coach or my players we’ll win next week and figure it out
