Carolina Hurricanes are gathering up for the upcoming 2025-26 season and the captain is optimistic
and Adam Gold, who was on assignment at Carolina Hurricanes training camp, had a chance to sit down with the captain. You’re still here? Yeah, I’m here. You’re still here? I’m here. Yeah, it’s been uh it’s been a fun ride and um I’m I’m ready for another great season and um give it all I got. You look around this room, there’s a lot of familiar faces, some new ones. What does it say about where this organization is? cuz there’s there were a lot of years where there were eight nine new new bodies in here. Yeah, it’s uh it’s a lot easier for sure when there’s only a few and and that’s when you know things are going wild too. You know, if you’re um we’ve we’ve got to always you always want to get better. You always got to tinker. But um the core and and the guys that are in this room, we believe in each other that uh you know, we have the mix and we just uh got to pull it off. Those are all always good things when you only have a few guys change over um and it makes it easier to kind of get going uh in the right direction again. I talked to you at the end of last year. Last year was weird because there was the the attempt to bring Mo in and obviously that didn’t work out and it put the group through a lot. Uh especially, you know, we know how Sebastian had to deal with that. But what are your thoughts? Have you thought back on just the way you guys got through last year and where you ended up? Yeah, every year has ups and downs. Every year has different challenges and that was that was a new one for me really. Um, you know, I can’t say I ever gone through a situation. I mean, a few kind of close scenarios, but nothing really like that. Um, you know, knowing that, you know, potentially your best player is is here, but maybe not here and not sure if he wants to be end. And it was like and we’re trying to, you know, make a playoff push and it was just there was so many different dynamics and you could tell we didn’t want he was kind of playing like the way we wanted to play and kind of not and just like it was everyone’s tiptoeing around him and and everyone else and we were really just waiting for the deadline to be done. And then after that we were we knew like you know talking to a few like the leaders that once we get that done then then we’ll go like let’s go and we did and whatever group we had we didn’t care we just wanted it done you know. I mean, it was like it just it was just too many what ifs and too many scenarios and um so you could tell once we had our group uh you know the the engine started turning again and um we started going and started playing the way we want we can and we wanted to do and um you know it it it continued uh through the rest of the year. I talked to Sebastian about it about playing and trying too hard like to like to set him up and how like he said like I’d lost my game for sure. Right. And every it just was a sigh of relief and then the way you guys did kick in and you get to the conference finals and it didn’t go the way you wanted. Um that had to be gratifying that you know you know what’s in the room. Yeah. Yeah. No, it’s I mean it’s we already knew what’s in the room. It was just it was weird time I thought. Um, you know, like I said, Fishy was uh was just a little off and and everyone else is kind of a little off myself and um and that’s all it takes, right? That’s how sloppy you can get very quickly. And um you know, in this league, everyone’s so close and and um it’s just uh it’s just those little little things that can send send you sideways. And um you know, at that point, it was it was hard to get wins. What when you guys get to the conference finals again and somehow that is looked at as not as final four hockey four teams playing you’re one of them and somehow that’s looked down upon. You guys got to change your system. That’s what I heard. How that’s wild. I mean think about this. I I think being in the final four is it is a crazy awesome accomplishment and I’ve I mean I’ve played like you said here a long time. I’ve, you know, only made it there only, you know, a handful of times. So, um, you know, it’s, uh, it’s hard to win it all. And, um, we know that in this room, obviously, we’ve been through a lot. And we, it just going to fuel us that much more. And, um, and it’s just really a matter of find those little things that can get us better. and you know whether the guys be added and um and a few tinkers with how we play and and what we do. But um we believe in in our our our foundation and who we are and the way we play and we believe it wins hockey games and we believe it’s going to do it all for us and we just got to keep pushing forward. What was your summer like? Short. Uh um but but awesome. Um why was it short? It just Yeah, I felt short. I mean, obviously, when you go that long and you finally get the body to kind of slow down and and take uh the time you need before you actually feel it, getting back in the gym and and and having energy to go again, um you know, you almost feel like you’re coming back here and you’re sitting here again. It’s like deja vuish feeling. But, um but I had a great summer. Um I have uh a lakehouse that literally is there’s no better place to turn your mind off. and my brothers were all up there with their kids and we just hung out every day for, you know, a month, month and a half of of just lake lake style. So, it was it was so good for me and and my family and and everyone to decompress and um and get the body feeling good again and um getting my strength back again and um and getting ready for another season. Are you lighter than last year? No, I’m about the same. You look leaner. No, I I would say I’m pretty pretty darn close to the same. Didn’t change it too much. Um, like I said, for how short the summer is, it’s hard to really change the body dramatically, uh, you know, in, you know, 2 and 1/2 months to really kind of get going. Um, so it’s kind of more just getting your strength back as quick as you can and getting a few a few gains. But, um, you know, and then just kind of getting ready back on the ice and get going again. All right, final thing. Just about the the room and the character that’s in here. How do you describe that? Oh. Um, I mean, you can go a lot of different ways, but um, you know, the guys I see in the room, the best part about our room is when I look around the room before a game, I can look at almost I was I mean, I don’t know what the new guys yet, but I could look at every guy around there and I just know what they’re going to bring. So, like it it just it’s such a good feeling. um stepping into a game knowing everyone in that in that game is going to give it everything they got cuz they’re competitive and it’s just like and and that’s like that’s you’re going to win a lot of games that way. So, I mean that’s that’s a huge bonus. And then um and then you got a lot of talent and and all those things. But um that’s the base of our group and we have guys that just push each other and and push the envelope and try to get better personally and then try to push each other to get better and um and challenge each other and um I think we can get better at at that even more especially when it gets down to the nitty-gritty at the end. And um you know I could be better at that. But, uh, I think that’s kind of our foundation and and it’s just it’s a fun room to be
