MLB Network [BREAKING NEWS] Seattle Mariners blank Houston Astros 4-0, take lead in AL West

playoff standings. Well, the Blue Jays the most wins in the league. The Mariners and the Tigers even now both at 85 and 69. The Tigers got waxed at home today. They lost by nine runs to the Atlanta Braves. The Mariners have the tiebreaker over the Tigers. So, as of right now, if the playoffs began tomorrow, the Mariners would receive a first round buy and the Tigers would be in the wildard round. Great to have you with us here inside the booth. Aaron Goldmith and Ryan Roland Smith hyphen that could not have got any better for the Mariners tonight. Yeah, game one we talked about, you know, setting the tone, getting off to that good start, getting maybe over some of the jitters, too, knowing how big this series is or some over some of the emotion. You know, the one the the tough part obviously is Brian Woo, but besides that, man, all systems go on all factors of this team. Still have not heard a report, an update on Brian Woo. We expect to hear more about that later with Brad Adam on the postgame show. All right, let’s run through what happened. Our game summary in this one. Game one in Houston. You talk about a tone set Julio in the first inning. Yeah, about this and this is what has been huge for this team in these last 12 games. Getting off getting off some runs in those first couple of innings has been massive. It was one- nothing when Gino came to the plate. Another solo home run up to the tracks. Yeah, how about this is an absolute bomb. You heard him tell Brad at him he was sitting on that breaking ball. Yeah, you see you see Hunter Brown back up on that pitch trying to throw him a second one. Now you pay for it. Victor Robas of course nearly the entire season on the injured list to not have a home run this year until the seventh inning tonight. Yeah, just gets a cement mixer. Deer Santos has been a big part of that bullpen especially after Josh her uh hits the IIL and you got to bra you in the in the closing spot. But man, I tell you what, he did not miss that one up into the train tracks. One of the most impactful players dealt at the deadline. Josh Naylor has been everything and more. His 20th home run this season. Yeah, and this ball is absolutely crushed. Look, he came over to the Mariners. The profile’s a little bit different. Didn’t have the same slug, but all of a sudden put on the Mariners uniform, him of course, Gino, we saw him earlier, been so impactful on this team after that trade deadline. Tonight’s local Ford dealers keys to the game following a 4-1 win tonight. Gino his 11th home run as a Mariner. four solo shots by the M against a lot of them against Hunter Brown who has been one of the elite starting pitchers in baseball this year. He did go six innings, scattered the five hits, nine strikeouts, now 200 punch outs on the season for Hunter Brown. But in a battle of bases, the Mariners able to get to Brown, hit the four home runs in total tonight against Brown and the Astros bullpen. And they take game one by a score of 4 nothing. Game one, a win in game one so critical. Why was this so important tonight for Dan Wilson? Well, I think a couple couple reasons. Number one, Hunter Brown is their ace. He’s an all-star. He’s one of the best. He’s going to be a Sai Young candidate. You have him game one. So, if you come out of the gates a little slow, a little rusty, all of a sudden situation where Brian Woo gives up a run or two and then Hunter Brown locks in, you’re looking at a game one loss and all of a sudden you got Framber Valdez. We don’t know what we’re going to see from him tomorrow. But I just think this was huge to set that tone, especially to going back to their strengths. Number one, the home runs, seeing Julio, uh, and seeing Gino go deep. uh Hunter Brown exits this game with a with a a deficit of two nothing and then also to the bullpen covering that ground the way they did bizarrely covering those two innings massive for this team. We turn our attention now to the Mariners starting pitcher tonight Brian Woo. This was a highly anticipated pitching matchup. Woo was nearly perfect. One walk, one hit over five innings, no runs. The seven strikeouts, first pitch strike to 12 of 17. The pitch count was in such great shape. It wasn’t even to 70 pitches through five innings. And we had images or thoughts rather of Woo going maybe seven innings tonight, but that was not on the cards for Woo. Yeah. And look, he was so good. And again, we talked about this during the game, right? So Ryan Woo has checked every box, especially coming out of 2024 where he spent some time on on the IIL. Can he get through a six-mon season? Check. Can he make be an all-star caliber player pitcher? Check. Can he be a game one pitcher? Well, he answered that question tonight. He was in such a groove. The only issue he had was in that fourth inning. The only test he had was in that fourth inning. What does he do? He punches out Otu and then Zack Cole. And then this was tough right here to to see him finish after P cuz he was cruising. You mentioned the pitch count, too. You 67 pitches. He could have gone deep into this game. Maybe saved that bullpen a little bit, but it wasn’t going to be the case for Brian W. But again, we’re anxious to see what’s going on with Brian. All right, here’s my question. The Mariners had Bizardo up. The pitch count was under 70 as we stated as we began the sixth inning. This was during the commercial break. Woo is warming up. I wonder why was Bizardo warming if the Mariners did not know that maybe something was up with Woo. This was him trying to get loose before the inning and clearly Dan Wilson caloric and Mariners trainer already on their way out and he hasn’t even fully warmed up yet. You can see the time sequence here. Yeah, and we we we’re going to hear more obviously as this game as this post post game goes on, but I think there was maybe a comment made after that fifth. Maybe came in the dugout and said, “Hey, look, I’ve tightened up a little bit. Maybe I’m a bit dehydrated.” Whatever it is, cuz they’re on high alert, man. It did not take them long to get out to that mount. Yeah, I I I’m with you. I have to imagine something was discussed in the dugout before that in Bazardo would be up cuz there’d be no reason for Bazardo to be up with the pitch count being what it was. But we’ll find out more from Brad and we’ll hear from Dan Wilson and the clubhouse. All right. So Woo was excellent in his five innings. And the bullpin, as we talked about on the broadcast, has been one of the best bullpens in baseball this month in particular. It was Bazardo, Brash, and Munoz combining for the four final innings at work. Yeah, a couple things that really stand out. First of all, Edward Bazardo, remember this is day two in a row. He pitched yesterday. I know he was efficient, but he is has the ability to cover two innings. That is so valuable. The big one that stands out to me for Matt Brash is just getting back to a place where he feels comfortable. took him 30 pitches against the Royals and he gave up those runs, right? So, you want your eighth inning guy, your high leverage, best version of Matt Brash down this stretch. So, tonight was really important for him. And we know the sense of urgency for Dan Wilson and we we question this. Will we see Andres Munoz in the ninth inning with a four-run lead? Absolutely. Because this game meant so much as game one of this series. Makes all the sense in the world. The Mariners are in the driver’s seat now. They control their own destiny. They lead the division by a game play, you know, really good one tonight. Great way to start the series here. Um, you know, when you look at four solo home runs and a shut out, that’s a, you know, it’s a good formula. Um, I thought, uh, um, Brian Woo pitched outstanding baseball. Um, you know, really kept them very quiet, had a great fast ball, had some good sliders as well. Um, and, uh, you know, just just held them at bay and then turned it over to the bullpen. Um, obviously Bizardo who has just had an incredible season and incredible consistency picks up two huge innings for us. Um, you know, with with Brian’s early exit and then, um, you know, Maddie and and, uh, Mooney kind of slamming the door there in the end. Just, you know, another great bullpen day. Uh, but but offensively, you know, Julio setting the tone early, uh, you know, get getting us on the board, getting us on top, and then, uh, you know, the add-on runs were huge and, uh, you know, just some great at bats. uh you know JP three hits down at the bottom of the order. Uh Vic with the homer. Um just uh you know some just some great great at bats and that’s what we do. You know you put a lot of pitches on the guy and and you keep wearing them down and and uh when we get mistakes we we we drove him out of the ballpark tonight and uh when you you look at Gino and and his swing and and um you know Nails getting to 2020 what a you know congratulations on a on a big milestone for him. So, just uh you know, a great night all around and um you know, like I said, a great way to start this series. Just what’s the issue with Brian? Yeah. Uh he just had a little pec tightness. Um and uh you know, kind of gave us a heads up and and and that’s why Bizardo is getting loose. Um you know, we’ll know more tomorrow. Um likely an MRI and and we’ll we’ll get to know a little bit more tomorrow, but that’s all we know at this point. What’s your level of concern? Uh, I mean, um, you know, I I I think you know, obviously concerned in some ways, but I think in other ways, uh, you know, Brian’s he’s he’s a tough cookie and, uh, I think, um, you know, it was it was smart that he let us know and and, uh, there was no reason to push it. So, um, you know, I I think, uh, I think we’ll just find out more tomorrow. I think there’s just it’s too many unknowns at this point. played off. When did you was it uh during the game or after after the inning, you know, between the innings there when when when he was back uh in the dugout and and um you know uh so that’s why we were you know semi-prepared and and he was going to go give it a shot and and um you know still still felt tight. So um you know we went to Bazardo at that point. He’s obviously been so good for you guys all season so consistent just I don’t know in the moment. concerning is that kind of hearing that he’s feeling something. You know, it’s uh until we know anymore, it’s hard to know. Um but uh um obviously we’re hoping for the best and and um you know, we we’ll just kind of see what happens when when we get more news tomorrow. And just how big was that from Julio in particular? I know you had four tonight, but to set the tone and get that early in um you know, Hunter Brown’s tough. He’s really tough and and uh to get that early in the ball game like that. Um and and uh you know in some ways uh more of a statement than than anything else. Um but but to get on top there, get the score in our favor and and allow Brian a little you know room to kind of do what he does and and uh he he went out and did what he does. Um he was extremely effective tonight. Um and uh you know that was a uh it looked like another gear from Brian tonight and and it was impressive. But but being able to to get ahead, I think did allow, you know, Brian to to relax and and get into that ball game. Wave side that Julio got to. Just what does that say about all the progress he’s made? I mean, a sinker down and in that was off the plate. Um, you know, getting to that pitch and and uh being able to keep it fair um and and get it up in the air. That’s that’s a tough pitch to to get in the air and and uh um you know, just a great piece of hitting right there to put us on the board to be able to strike first like that. Is that even more important on the road in general, but specifically here sold out crowd, roofs closed this time of year, all all the stakes? I mean, on the road for sure. I mean, it’s it’s definitely something, you know, it allows you to to get into the game a little bit and allow your pitcher a little cushion and um you know, I don’t think Brian needed much cushion tonight. Um but, uh he he had some and you know, um Gino’s homer was was another kind of lift to add on and then nails and and Vic um to give us a little more breathing room. So, um, you know, we’ve talked about it. You know, getting a lead and then adding on runs later is big, and that’s what we were able to do tonight. Couple miscues late, but early Julio’s play defensively and Gino’s bare-handed play. How about the defense early? Yeah, I think um, you know, uh, our defense, you know, continues to to do the job and do it very well. Um, you know, I thought Julio’s catch out there in in center field was, you know, another kind of a a game changer there to uh to, you know, kind of quiet a little bit of a a rally maybe or or at least a lift for Houston. Um, and uh, you know, uh, our our infield play continues to be very solid and and um, you know, getting a double play there for Matty Brash was big and and um, you know, just uh, continues to do the job and um, that’s what that’s what it takes. You know, you need to fire on all cylinders here. We had the pitching tonight. We had some great offense and we had some great defense and and uh you know that’s that’s what it takes this time of year. Una Munos in a non-safe spot. Just how important was getting this one game one? Yeah, I mean all these games are important. All these games are extremely important and um you know you got a chance to to tie it down. Um you know we’re going to take it and and um it was uh um that’s how we felt about there in the ninth and and Mooney came out and did the job. Yeah, Mooney closed this one out. A non-save situation showing you just how important this game was. Dan talked about a winning game one huge eight more to g. They’re all huge in the Mariners getting some help from others around the American League. More scores and uh standings a little bit later on, but right now let’s focus in on Brian Woo. Five innings, just the one hit, seven strikeouts. He picks up his 15th win, but unfortunately leaves the game, as Dan Wilson said, with a little bit of a pec issue. uh if that muscle is tightening up or we’re not sure what that means. MRI will know more tomorrow. Let’s know more now from Brian Woo himself as Woo talks about his night and his injury afterwards. You know, it’s it’s such a hard pitch unless it’s, you know, a specialty of yours and you just got feel for it on the road. Yeah, it’s a big series obviously. Um, but you know, try to treat it like any with locating it and and getting it to kind of the shape that you want so that it it fits your arsenal. Um, but yeah, luckily um, you know, happy that the one that I did throw was in a big spot and um, executed it. It’s not something you’re going to throw a punch, but to have it just in your pocket for that like occasions like that, it’s kind of nice. Yeah, exactly. So, um, yeah, definitely happy with it and, you know, I’m excited to keep throwing it. On that note, the slider sweeper seemed like you kind of leaned on that a little bit tonight, too. Talk more about the development of those pitches and not having to be so fast ball dominant. Yeah, I mean, it makes a big difference. Um, make guys, you know, um, just not so comfortable sitting firm. Um, being able to change speeds, locations, um, especially with a a very, you know, right-handed dominant lineup, um, makes a big difference when you’re able to to split the plate in half. And being able to attack armside and then, you know, um, glove side with with the sweeper and the and the four seam and the and the two seam tonight. So, was was big. Um but yeah, definitely makes a big

  1. Mariners are the #2 seed in the AL right now. Apple TV covering LA vs SF tonight gave Detroit the #2 seed in the bracket. That is incorrect if both teams are tied M's won the series 4-2 vs Detroit.

  2. We certainly can't say we "own" the Astros.

BUT winning game 1 sends the message that they don't "own" us, we're not scared, and we can beat them when it matters.
