MLB Network BREAKDOWN Brice Turang clutch hits, Brewers beat Cardinals 2-1, 1-game to win NL Central

What a show we just witnessed in St. Louis. Steven Watson, Tim Dillard here with you. And Tim, I know there’s a saying, you never know what you’re going to see at the ballpark. Well, you never know what you’re going to see with these Milwaukee Brewers. You’ve never written down a a 135 right there. I Jared Canning threw 16 pitches. He got six outs. He only faced five batters, got six outs. I mean, I’ve never seen a play like that. That it was to to end the game pretty much on that right there. I mean, you saw Ali Marmal, the manager of the Cardinals in the dugout. He was as shocked as everybody else. That’s just horrible base running all the way. But at the same time, the defense being able to execute that play. Magnificent. Yeah, it was just one of those signature Brewers wins. We’ve had a lot of them through uh this season. 95 of them to be exact. And Sophia Minard standing by with Bryce Terang who drove in the game-winning run. Thanks, guys. Bryce, what a game here. You come up with the big at bat in the tenth. And you saw a couple of really tough sliders. What did you want to commit to in that at bat? Yeah, like we just talked about pitch by pitch. Um, you know, trying to win each pitch, trying to win the at bat and put up a quality at bat for my team. And, um, you know, the guys, the the guys did great tonight, and it was a fun game. And, yeah, offensively, this was a crazy game. You guys put so much pressure on the Cardinals pitching staff. There were more than 10 hard contacts tonight. How good did it feel to finally deliver that big hit, Bryce? Yeah, it always it always feels good. Um when you when you hit the ball hard and then when it when it falls is uh even better for sure. Um yeah, you know, these guys have been having good at bats, quality at bats, hitting the ball hard and um controlling what you can control and um sometimes you can’t control where they’re standing. So the guys stuck with it and we uh grinded out the win tonight. Jared Kanik delivered the last two innings here, but that double play that you guys were able to turn with Mona making the throw across the field to Caleb. What did you see on that play and just Mona’s reaction as well? Yeah, I mean, um, you you could practice those plays all you want, you know, and in the game situation and Jared did a good job looking at him, making sure he’s headed back and then making the the out at first and then Mona having a good transfer and a good throw to to third. Um it’s a good play and and um yeah, two good throws and two outs. So yeah. Well, finally the Cubs lost. You guys win. The Magic number is down to one to clinch the division. And you’ve got tons of Brewers fans here. They’ve been loud for you here the last couple innings. How does it feel? Yeah, it feels really good. Um fans coming down here to watch us play. Um any fan that travels down to to watch us is great. Um you know, it’s exciting. We put ourselves in a good position. We just got to worry about ourselves and and focus on each game and trying to win each game. So, all right. Thanks, Bryce, for the time. Yeah. Thank you. All right. Win tonight remains the mentality for the Milwaukee Brewers. They pick up their 95th victory of the season. One away from tying the franchise record back in 2018 and 2011. Two away from setting a new franchise record. They have seven games left, Tim. Uh pretty incredible what this team is doing. and and tonight was just a perfect microcosm of this season. Just the way in which they’ve won these games. Yeah, it’s been a magical season and uh just today in general with Cubs losing now we’re hearing that the Reds are up maybe or the Phillies like every feel like everything’s kind of fallen that way for the Brewers especially coming off of last night when you felt like they could do nothing right. I know the defense was really good, but there were a lot of things that went wrong. And then you look at today, it’s like they had the right guy at the right place at the right time. Whether it was at the bat, on the mound, or in the field, Brewers played wonderful today. And that kind of sums up the entire season. When you talk about 95 wins, you have to have wins like this, uh, where you just play solid all the way around. Yeah, magic number is one. And, you know, Philly’s trailing right now in Arizona four to three. So, they could watch homefield advantage really fall into their lap during this road trip as well. Well, our Menard’s big money moment. Well, we saw how this game ended with the defensive plays, but really the defense all night, Tim, was incredible from the Bruins. Oh, it was a close game throughout and I mean, it started off with Joey Ortiz. This was unbelievable in the fourth inning. Saves a run. Oh, the power of glove. You got to love it. He’s my dream glover, but able to get it out and take the throw. And then Terra able to just Oh, am I going to throw it? Nope. Uh, but then later on, Terra, I mean, this play, slow, slow ball, able to bend and snap. Watch this throw. A dart. Literal dart over to Vaughn at first. Uh but it didn’t stop there. Ashby gets a lot of balls on the ground. This one was scutted. Here’s the backhand scoop for Terang. That ends the inning. I mean 104 off the back. Good luck. Well, he doesn’t need it. He’s actually really good. And then back to Kanik. I mean, they teach you to look him back and as soon as he commits to second, give up the ball. Monisterio off the bench. Man, it’s really nice to have a short stop playing first right there. Does Von make that play? Maybe. But Monisterio built for that moment. Great tag by Derban as well. A lot of things could have been differently. Kananig right there. If he would have committed to, hey, let’s get this guy in a run down at second base. Suddenly you have maybe a man on first, maybe a man on second with one out. But they teach you as soon as a guy commits back to the base he was at, go ahead and get the out. So, I mean, there were so many things that went right on that play that could easily not gone very well. Uh, but absolutely deflated the Cardinals after that. I mean to have a man on second, nobody out, and then have two outs right after that. Ed Ho, I know the ghost rudder stuff is relatively new to the game, but have you heard of three outs on five pitches and two at bats? Yeah, I mean, that’s what I’m saying. He got he got six outs, face five batters, and it’s it’s weird to say that. Uh but Kanig was great. You didn’t even know if he was going to go back out for the inning. You thought maybe one batter, maybe two batters. Everything falls in the lap, you run with it. Uh he picked up his sixth win. I mean, that just he he did an incredible job. pitched to contact, got the defense when he needed it. Yeah. Six and one this season for Jared Kanig as he picks up yet another save. And and Tim, you look at the bullpen all tonight. I mean, complete scoreless. Aaron Ashby going two and two/3 and then Abner reb Jared Kanig taking it up from there covering the final three innings. Yeah. Well, I’m looking at zero walks, right? Four Ks, which I mean that’s very good. But there were three double plays. Ashby got a double play. Kanan got two of them. that is game changers, you know, and most of the time it comes back to can you get the leadoff man out? Uh only one leadoff man reached base from uh for the bullpen, but um but that’s your weapons. Those are the guys that are going to come out of the bullpen and pitch your most, you know, important innings, especially in the postseason. They’ve been doing it all year, but when guys start to get hurt and rolls start to skip around, suddenly you got a reb uh who was, you know, the eighth inning guy, then the ninth, and now he’s back to the eighth. But I mean, they’re nails going to them. You should go to them. Well, something uh we’re certainly monitoring here on Brewers Live is the health of William Contrarus. In the bottom of the seventh, he ended up, you know, getting hit in his glove hand. It was catcher’s interference. He would actually leave the game. He tried to come out for the bottom of the eighth. We’ll wait and see what Pat Murphy has to say, but doesn’t look good with the contact that he’s taken on that hand that’s already taken a beating this year, Tim. I mean, it’s a late swing. You see this sometimes. I mean, his brother Wilson missed time by uh getting hit on the forearm. I think he broke his forum last year or the year before that, but you could just tell, you could tell right when it happened that he was going to try to stick it out just because he’s tough. Um, but I mean, honestly, I think everyone’s holding their breath right now. I mean, what are you going to do without William Contreras and what he means to this team at the worst possible time. Uh, a good sign that he was back in the dugout. This stuff does happen, but usually usually it’s a late swing and hit a glove. We’ve seen Sal Freelick do that a lot. It’s very common across the game, but to get some skin on that, to get some wrist, I I mean, it was a change up, so I understand why Contreras as a catcher was trying to get out in front of it and pull it up to make it look like a strike, but I mean, to get hit right there at this point in the season, I mean, it’s Yeah, it hurts. Yeah, once we have word, we will bring it to you here on Brewers Live. Once Pat Murphy sits down to meet with the media, we will bring it to you with a two out, two strike RBI. And it ended with a two strike, two out RBI from Bryce Terang. Joey Ortiz is the one who delivered that first run and what a complete game we saw from Joey O tonight. I mean had some hits and I mean he did right in the right situations. I can’t believe I mean he’s he’s dominating the right side of the field especially the four hole. That’s where he’s been hitting a lot of pitches. This right here ambush with two outs. Got a man on second base. Here’s Powers. You feel like he’s just on base every single time. What a big moment. Joey O. That’s RBI to the 45. Uh almost takes one. first pitch of his third at bat. Almost takes his face off. Ends up staying in. I mean it I mean you could if you’re splitting hairs it probably hit his helmet, but he stays in there. Stays on a pitch. Base hit into center field. That’s his second hit of the night. He also got robbed not by a little old lady on a motorized cart, but by Nolan Aronado at third base. But the defense, this play right here, watch where his glove is going to get to this ball. He’s not reading the hop. He’s reading the ball out of the air like he’s knowing where the ball’s going to land, not where it’s going to bounce up to. And that’s where he had to meet it halfway. And I mean, that’s not how you draw it up at all if you have the time. He did not have the time. It’s it’s defense. His It’s incredible. Uh we’re starting to see the bat come around, though. But some really tough at bats uh for Joey. I thought he was swinging the bat. Well, it’s going to continue. What’d you make of the bottom of the order tonight with the Durban Bowers, Vaughn, Ortiz to round out the order? Vaughn had a great night. I mean, you go double, had a couple walks in there, a sacrifice fly. I mean, he was getting it done. He was on base every single time, but he knows what’s going on. And even in the eighth hole, like if you’re if you’re a guy that’s batting fourth or fifth, you’re expected to drive in runs. Give us our extra base hits. Where are your extra base hits? But for him to be in the eighth hole and have a man on third, less than two outs and go, you know what? I’m going to get my fifth sack fly since I’ve been a Brewer. And Brewers now lead all of baseball. I know you love this, in sack flies from first baseman’s. That’s where we are in the world. We have computers that tell us that. I mean, but that matters.
