Padres vs. White Sox Game Highlights (9/21/25) | MLB Highlights

Shawn Burke is on the mound today for the White Sox. He’s been a starter. He’s been a reliever. Back to the starting role. And for Shawn Burke, his 22nd start, 14th here at home. 126 innings. There’s almost a strike out there. There’s some swing and miss as opposed to 62 walks for Shawn Burke. Batist hits a high-fly ball out into center field. Brooks Baldwin is back and now under it and he makes a catch. Now Luis Arise left hand hitting second baseman. Popped up shallow left field. Will Robertson with his sunglasses glistening in the sunlight. Makes a catch. Chopped to the left side. Charged it short by Montgomery. Funny hop, but he’s got it. And the throw to first in time to end of one, two, three. Top of the first inning for Shawn Burke. Michael King on the mound today for San Diego. A lot of time on the IIL, but Michael King is healthy. He’s back out there. And boy, do the Potteries need Michael King. 14 start trying to improve to five and three the RA under four. So a hit by pitch and now a four pitch walk to begin the day for Michael King. First and second, nobody out here in the bottom of the first inning. Coulson Montgomery the short stop and a strike three gets him looking. Needed that first strike out of the day for Michael King. He most certainly needed this one. Look, look at this movement there. So now from a glass half full perspective, Michael King is a ground ball away from getting out of this thing. Grounds it to third. Man, he’s got it. Goes to second. That’s one. Arise’s turn is in time and a double play. Glass half full for Michael King. And for the first time this week, no runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jackson Merrill has been red hot. He’ll lead it off here in the second inning. Line to right and that’ll get in for a base hit. First hit of the day for the Padres’s belongs to Redot Jackson Merrill. The runner on with one out in the inning and Gavin Sheets. Runner goes and Merrill and Bloop to right field falling fast. That’s going to fall for a hit. Good read by Merill. He just keeps on going to third and the Padres’s have something going here in the second inning. They’re at the corners with one away. There’s a guy who had a big night last night. Three hits in the game. Ryan O’Harn go to first again and he throws it away. From third base comes Merryill. Padres’s take a one- nothing lead. Sheets round second and he’ll get back. But an errant throw over to first base and the Padres’s score first. Pitch number 10. Strike three called. Quality curve ball from Shawn Burke. Two down of the inning with Sheets at second base and Jake Croninorth standing in line into center field. A base hit. Coming around from second base is Sheets and the Padres will take a two nothing lead. Jake Croninorth getting it done. Burke creates some firewood, but Jake Cron doesn’t care. Gets the knock despite the broken bat and the pickoff error. Reigns big here in the second inning. We shift to the third inning here in Chicago with the Padres’s on top. Two nothing. Here’s Fernando to lead it off. Driven deep left field. It is back. Robertson looking up. It is gone. Home run for Fernando. Padres’s take a three nothing lead. 23rd of the year. Fernando. The sound of the ball off Fernando’s bat should give every pitcher out there shivers. Oh, that’s a no doubter. Thanks, White Sox. Michael King pitching with a lead and trying to work a clean fourth inning. White Socks have had at least one guy on base all three innings so far. This one is hooked right side and by the dive a right field. One out knock for Baldwin and Sosa swings, pops it up shallow left center field. Lauraniano gambling in. He’ll call off Cronin Worth who went back and Raone makes the catch for number two. So, two outs. Baldwin at first. And that’ll bring up Will Robertson. All right. Is ready and a pitch. Swung on and miss. Strike three. Maybe the best change up he’s thrown this afternoon and his third strike out of the day. Dominic Fletcher retired. First out of the fifth. The order over. Chase Minro coming up next. Trickle down the third baseline. Machado bare hands and fires and gets him. Danny Machado with an outstanding play from third base. I’m Manny Machado and you are out. Charging the bare hand, the grip, the accuracy. We see it all the time and it never gets old. You just got Machado. Two down in the fifth. Kyle Teal. Teal swings and misses. Strike three. A one, two, three, fifth for Michael King. His first. Michael King back to work. Montgomery, Vargas, and Carol 3, four and five coming up for the South. That one just over the head of Croninworth as Coulson Montgomery picks up his first hit today. The third hit of the ball game for the Socks. Vargas shoots one into right. A base hit. Montgomery stops it second. Comes Ruben Nablo. This is the third time in this game Michael King has put the first two base runners on. Got away with the first two. We’ll see what happens here this time in the sixth inning. Ball four and a four pitch walk to load him up with nobody out for the White Socks. Here comes Mike Shelton. Yep. His day is over at 70 pitches. Adrien has got some work to do entering his 72nd game. Andre’s kind of been cruising, but all of a sudden in some peril here. Sam pinchets. Base is loaded. Nobody out. Again trying to clean the mess. 02 swinging a miss. Me strikes out on a foul tip and a big out number one here in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bases loaded, one out. Big out there. Here’s Lenine Sosa now. Popped up right side. O’Harn infield fly rule in effect as he makes the catch for route number two. Two big outs for Mory home. Base is still loaded. You betcha. He is an out away from getting out of this mess. Michael A. Taylor will be the pinch hitter here. The strike three gets him looking. Adrien comes in. Base is loaded, nobody out. Gets it done. Adrien comes out of the bullpen with the bases loaded, nobody out. And he leaves them loaded. Something away. Ball four. to a double and a walk to begin the inning. And now again, first and second, nobody out for the White Socks. This time with Kyle Teal coming up against Kyle Hart. Strike three gets in. Three sweepers in a row. First strike out, first out for Kyle Hart. Ball four. Loads of bases. Well, I got to go get Miller here. It’s crunch time. Enter heartthorn righthander Mason Miller. He’s got one out. He’s got bases loaded. Socks on every pillow for Mason Miller. 3-2 ball four and the Socks will score their first run of the ball game here in the seventh. Bases reloaded that brings up Carol swinging a miss and he struck him out. Comes back to get him out number two of the inning. Throws the slider this time. Oh, he spins it very well. Thank you for the swing and miss. And now Ben Tendy will pinch hit. First appearance of the series for the left-handed batter. And he misses outside. Ball four, walking in the second run here in the seventh. And Sosa has a chance. Cory Lee running at first base for Ben Tendy. But the base is loaded. Hard hit grounder left side. Manny handles the in between. Hop beautifully. And the throw across is in time to end the inning. But eight White Socks come to bat in the bottom of the seventh. They get their first two runs of the day as Cory Lee his first appearance in left field. Wonder whose glove that is. He’s looking at it. He’s like, I’m not sure either. It’s got some nice size to it. We do know that. Be able to catch something in it. Certainly. And it’s actually Luis Robert Jr.’s glove. He I asked him. He’s sitting here in the dugout. I was like, “Hey, is that your glove that Cory’s using?” He goes, “Yep, that sure is.” Looks good on him, though. You see the gold the uh the the gold band, which shows you that whoever glove that is won a gold glove. Cory Lee will be tested down the line in left field. Oh, he makes the sliding catch. Cory Lee, let him know. It’s the everpresent defensive glove that everybody uses. And there it is. Cory puts it to good use. The glove’s owner thinks it’s pretty good. Oh yeah. 3-2 Padres’s have the lead over the White Socks as we go to the bottom of the ninth inning as Robert Suarez, the closure into the game, trying to nail it down. Strike three. Got him. First out of the ninth inning, change up from Suarez. So, one out for Coulson Montgomery on the ground, right side, a rise to the backand. Suarez will cover for the out. That’s out number two of the ninth inning. Leaves his feet to the backhand catch and then has to do something he very rarely does, which is lead the pitcher to first for the flip and out. Two down here tonight. Swinging a miss. He struck him out. Padres’s win. A one, two, three, ninth inning for Robert Suarez. And the Padres’s are victorious. They hold on to a 3-2 win today and they take the series from the White Socks.

  1. Struggled against the Chicago White Sox, and almost gave the game away. Good God– how can we expect anything in the post-season?

How did this team manage to get 84 wins?

  2. Shildt has to understand when to pull a starter before they implode. 4th and 5th innings are the sweet spot. and for the love of GAWD don't put Kyle Hart in unless we're up by 10…or down by 10.

  3. Man, this game was super frustrating. Shildt had no business to take Morejon out. Dude literally saved the Padres from King’s loaded bases. Any who great, W boys and great job Suarez. Dude throws missiles!

  4. Here’s an update: The Padres can clinch a spot in the postseason with a win TOMORROW at Petco Park.

The Mets’ loss today opened that path. The Padres would win all potential tiebreakers vs. NYM, meaning their magic number is now 1️⃣
