🚨Celtics Make MULTIPLE Roster Moves Before Training Camp | Boston Celtics News
[Music] And just like that, training camp is just one week away. Ahead of Celtics training camp, Brad Stevens went out there and made two roster moves. We’ll talk about those, break them all down on today’s show, and then we’ll get into an Anthony Simons trade update via a Celtics insider. And then little spoiler alert to close out today’s show. We’ll even get into an Al Horford update as well. Let’s hop right in to the Celtics roster moves here as Hayden Gray has been waved. originally signed to an exhibit 10 contract, but ahead of training camp, the Celtics decided to part ways with the former UC San Diego Triton. He was their second leading scorer last year. He actually led the all of college basketball in steels, but uh just didn’t find a spot here on the Celtics training camp roster. You know, good luck to him. He will probably find another spot around the league on an exhibit 10 training camp deal and play at another G-League spot. The reasoning I would assume for Hayden Gray leaving the Celtics here is not that they didn’t love him or didn’t really like him as a player, uh, but it’s more so the main Celtics and and the role that he would probably have on that team being minuscule. Uh, it didn’t look like he had a spot uh on the Celtics D-League roster. So, they’re going to give him an opportunity to find work elsewhere. We’ll get into who the Celtics made roster moves on, who they signed, and they also have another spot left available. So, we’ll talk about that in just a moment, but this is why you subscribe to Celtics today by Chat Sports. When the Celtics make a move, we make a video. 53,000 strong Celtics fans here are already subscribed. So, if you’re not already, go and change it and turn those notifications on so you never miss a moment surrounding your Boston Celtics all season long. Getting into a new Celtics exhibit 10 deal here. Kendall Brown joins the Celtics training camp roster after being the 48th overall pick back in 2022 by the Timberwolves. His rights were then transferred over to the Indiana Pacers where he signed a two-way contract spending two years in Indie. was eventually converted to a standard deal in 2023 2024 and in total he’s played in 21 NBA games. Also did briefly sign with the Brooklyn Nets last year and he played out his G-League games with them. I’m not going to lie to you guys, Kendall Brown, not exactly the flashiest statistics that we’re going to put up on the board here. In 21 games, he’s only played about three and a half minutes a night and or you know, one one point a game. like it didn’t really even deserve a big stat graphic here, but an efficient player, a downhill scorer, puts great rim pressure out there, and you know, this is a guy who doesn’t necessarily hit um high volume three-pointers, but when he gets his opportunities, he has been efficient. Uh spent this past summer league with Boston, and you know, projects to be one of the the main Celtics out there uh on our G-League roster this season. And look, the NBA stats aren’t that inspiring, but he was a solid contributor for the the Long Island Nets when he was with their G-League squad, uh, Brooklyn’s affiliate last season. Averaged 16 points per game. Shot 37% from three-point range, but limited to just 2.3 attempts a night. So, not super high volume there. Just an athletic get up and down the floor type of player. And that’s kind of why he spent so much time with Indiana with the Indiana Pacers because they like to get up and down the floor. This guy can um get out in transition, man, and make some highlight plays at the rim. As far as what he did with Boston in the summer league, like it’s not exactly an environment where you get to, you know, put up crazy numbers like you would say in a G-League environment. He gets 8.6 points per game. Played five five times with Boston this past summer league in Vegas. Uh and then didn’t really do all too much aside from making some pretty nice finishes at the rim. So, uh Celtics training camp body here. He’s 21 years old, like solid frame about 66. So, we’ll see what Kendall Brown can do here as he joins a couple other Celtics on some Exhibit 10 contracts. Remember, Jaylen Bridges was signed earlier this summer. Ron Harper Jr. was the most recent signing before Kendall Brown as both those guys were pretty prolific collegiate players. Jaylen Bridges uh I would say probably the best outside shooter of the three here. Ron Harper Jr. can get it from multiple uh you know, levels of the floor as well. Just an absolute bucket getter there. I really enjoyed watching him at the collegiate level, but hasn’t necessarily got a true, you know, solid lo landing spot in the NBA just yet. I would say though, he has the most experience out of all these three. We’ll see if any of these guys can make an impact and potentially, you know, land on the Celtics at some point during this season. You know, young young talent is kind of where exhibit 10 contracts are signed here. So, three guys who are just trying to get another opportunity in the NBA. We’ll see what Kendall Brown can do in his time with Boston and Maine. Speaking of the main Celtics, there are a couple other guys that will be joining them on the Celtics G-League team this year. Seems have three two-way uh contracts signed right now. The three rookies out there, Max Schulga and Amari Williams, who they drafted, and then R.J. Lewis, who they got in the uh George Nyang trade with Utah to dump that $8 million. They bring back uh R.J. Lewis in the deal here and then ended up making uh I believe Oh, I’m his name slipped my mind, right? Miles Norris, his two-way contract has been waved as well. Ugo Gonzalez, the Celtics first round pick from this past draft. I anticipate will also spend a good portion of the season in Maine. He’s still a really raw prospect and you want him to get as much real like United States basketball reps as he’s been an overseas cat and maybe have him ready to go for when Jason Tatum can return in 2026 2027. I do believe that with the Celtics uncertainty with their roster this season, especially on the back end of the rotation, I think there is a non-zero chance that we see one of the two-way guys or one of the exhibit 10 guys potentially, you know, make an impact and actually be a part of the Celtics rotation down the line because what the, you know, idea is for the Celtics front office here, the coaching staff is they are looking for a season of development, a season of discovery, and potentially a season where you find a diamond in the rough who you’re not paying a whole heck of a lot of money but can contribute for you down the line. And that’s, you know, with the how how financially tied up the Boston Celtics are. It’s just a reality situation. They have to go out there and uh just find a guy that nobody else really had on their radar here. We’ll see if that ends up being the case. If it is, who do you guys think it’s going to be? Who is your guy? Which Celtics two-way player or exhibit 10 contract would do you guys think has the best chance at breaking out and breaking into Joe Missoula’s rotation this season and beyond? Let me know who that is down in the comments section. Next, we’re going to talk about some Anthony Simons updates and you know the whole trade saga. The rumors are flying. Celtics media day is is creeping up as well. And we’ll talk about an Al Horford update as he still remains a free agent unsigned this summer. That in just a moment, but first, get hooked up with these awesome Celtics hats. Gift season, gift giving season’s around the corner. I think some of these Celtics hats they have on on sale right now are absolutely fresh. Look at this Boston Skyline in this one with the rope and the flat bill. I know that’s all in style right now. That’s chatports.com/seltics hats to get yours today. Celtics insider Brian Rob of Massive had this update on Anthony Simons as we are just one week away from training camp. There are likely a number of factors at play here. The Celtics have certainly tested the market on Simons this summer and haven’t found anything appealing to them, which shouldn’t come at a huge surprise. Point guard is one of the deeper positions in the league right now, and Simons is a pricey option given his defensive shortcomings. A couple of injuries or mid-season moves could change priorities for contenders as the season goes on, but right now, everyone likes their team to some degree. And yes, he’s right. He is a pricey commodity. $27 million for a player who, you know, historically has only played one side of the floor. And Ron makes a lot of good points, man. Like the point guard market is pretty saturated right now. a lot of guys can go out there and put the ball in the cup. And you know, a lot of guys aren’t looking to trade for a 27 million guy uh dollar guy who fits that archetype before the season even begins. Everybody kind of has one already on their roster. And I think the Celtics have kind of conceded that effort of moving Simons before the season is he’s already been working out in the Celtics facility, the Arrowback Center, and they’ve already been posting pictures of him and stuff. They didn’t end up giving him a media introduction here uh before the season because they were probably working the phones on a Simons’s deal, but could nothing really ended up making sense to them. But now the first time we will hear questions being asked, Simon’s being talked talking about being a Celtic this upcoming season and however long that may may be. Uh in just one week, media day for the Boston Celtics like training camp is starting all on the same day, September 29th. And that is just one week away. And I I’ll be honest with you guys, Simons is going to face questions in this media, you know, kind of cycle that really mainly involve him not being a boss helic more so than him actually being on the court. They’re going to be peppering him with questions about the uncertainty uh on on this roster, him being on an expiring contract, what he envisions for himself here over the next few months. And it is going to be an awkward spot. I don’t anticipate those those comments and those questions stopping here really anytime soon. So, I’ll be curious to see how Simons handles all these questions and all and this kind of circus here as it’s really no secret that the Celtics are trying to move him. If there’s one thing that we know with the Celtics trying to move him is that he’s surely going to play a good chunk of minutes. He’s surely going to have a big role in in Joe Mazula’s rotation this year. Not only because they are trying to bump his stock up. They’re trying to market him and and sell him to the rest of the NBA franchises out there, but he is an a player with an archetype that really fits well in Joe Mazula’s offense. you know, high volume three-point shooter, can get up and down the floor, uh, a guy who can play with, you know, a ton of possessions per game. So, it fits really well. Hopefully, a bunch of NBA teams see that here as the season goes on. More from Brian Rob here on the Celtics and Simons. The other factor worth considering is how the Celtics want to build their roster moving forward. They are very limited on that front in terms of movable salary. if their core is staying put. Simons is their one big movable salary piece left. So, they are surely going to be patient with him since moving him would close the door on a lot of salary possibilities moving forward. So, they haven’t really found the return that they wanted this summer. And I I I am hesitant to necessarily just straight salary dump Anthony Simons and not try to get a piece back that you think could contribute for you down the line because yeah, he is your only only major movable piece left and you don’t have uh a ton of flexibility if you get off the money like like say they just dump his contract free agency hits next next off seasonason. I think the Celtics would I mean all they have to their really real name at that point would be non-t taxpayer mid-level exception and and and then really it gets dicey after that in terms of roster construction. So we’ll see. Is there a chance that Simons plays out the whole year if they really don’t find anything that they would like in that regard? Maybe they just end up bringing him back on a on a cheaper deal. I think that’s a little unlikely, but I mean I can’t say it’s an odd zero chance. Uh, I think all everything’s on the table right now and there’s no telling if a team would even be willing to take Simons’s deal on. I mean, it’ll be expiring contract. Maybe the Celtics will end up having to attach draft capital at some point. A lot is uncertain and we’re going to find out a lot as Simons gets acclimated and gets on the court for your Celtics. Hopefully, he plays well and a lot of teams will be calling as the trade deadline approaches. Will the Celtics find a trade that makes sense for Anthony Simons? And they might end up making one that doesn’t make sense, but will they end up finding a suitable trade that, you know, is a positive for them? Why for yes and for no? Let me know what you guys think down in the comments section. Al Horford update. It’s not looking great. If anybody had any thoughts about Al Horford potentially coming back to the Celtics this upcoming season is he does remain unsigned right now. It it’s it’s it’s a zero chance. I’m talking a lot about non-zero chances in this video. That’s a zero chance. Al Horford is not coming back. He remains a Golden State Warrior. Brett Seagull of Clutch Point said Horford has been able to sign his two-year contract that’s lined up because the Dubs cap situation as they wait for the Jonathan Kinga saga to get resolved. So, that’s what they’re dealing with. And um shout out Al Horford, man. He’s going to go out there and play a big role for them. I’m going to miss him. Al Horford will always be a Boston Celtic to me. Shout out to him for getting a two-year contract as well, being a champ, being a vet. He’s getting that two-year deal with the player option the second year. Who knows? Maybe if the Celtics are in a position where the roster looks okay and they could bring out Horford back on a cheap deal in 2026 27. Maybe he could ride out the last year of his uh NBA career with JT JB and the whole crew in Boston. But you’re a Celtic to me for life. I got his jersey. He’s a champion. I love Al Horford, man.
