🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers VS San Diego Padres /September 22/ Baseball Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

after this. So, just about set and towing the slab, Michael King. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. A lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Jackson Chorio leading things off and takes a strike. [Applause] Oh, one down. Yeah, that’s fouled off. and delivers outside. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count. Just tried to overthrow that this to third. Machado, one up, one down. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers and then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bullpit. You can tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack. A lot of patience just like you said. Here we go. Foul ball. One down. Base is empty. And there’s a ball. That one missed. [Music] Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Andrew Vaughn now. All right, Michael, the number three overall pick out a Cal for the White Socks in 2019. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. And that one fouled off. Man at first, one away. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Next offering way off the plate. swings and misses. Struck him out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. And it’s Reese Hoskins up to the dish. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. [Applause] move to first. Collins back on a dive. Outside low and it’s a ball to strike. Collins off of first with two away. Next offering is fouled back. Started after the one-two pitch. Appeal to first and no swing, says Joe McDonald. And that’s downed away. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Milwaukee leaves one and now the Friars will get their first chance. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and towing the slab, Robert Gasser. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. I mean, it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow, they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Fernando Tatiz Jr., the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one, tries to hold up, appeal to first, and Joe McDonald says he went around. Come on, Fernando. Eddie Bunts, but that’s a foul ball. That one drilled left field. He makes the grab. One away. As we take a look at the Padres’s lineup. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah. And when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for error. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. One out, bases empty. Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit around first and hustling for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. The relay, the tag out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Here’s Manny Machado now. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza line so far this month. just missed. Two out. Space is empty and another ball. Two and0. Next offering is in for a strike. And there’s a ball. [Applause] And there’s ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Jackson Merrill in the box now as he leaves that one up high. All right, Jackson. Two outs. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. That one misses. That’s five straight. Raone Lauriano on deck for the Padres’s. Fast ball for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. And a big swing and a miss. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And a pitch. Ground ball right side. Monisterio in plenty of time to first and that’ll do it. One left for San Diego. We played an inning, no score. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the third base number 21. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does out of the ground to third and that’s just foul and the next pitch is way outside. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Missed with a change up and that’s ball two. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Still two and two after the foul ball. Punch him out. cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Andrew Monisterio digs in now, misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. Outside corner, there’s a strike. Freddy Ferguson behind the dish calling the balls in strikes. No score here in the second. All right. Next pitch is outside. Yeah. I mean, he’s a guy that has a reputation for being fergicious. Yes. And you know, whatever. Fergalicious liner. And this could be trouble around first. Heading for two now. Around second. Going for third. The relay throw. He’s in there. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. And here’s the catcher, Danny Jansen. That one ripped and it gets into the corner, but it’s foul. [Applause] Monisterio takes his lead at third with one away. Next offering is fouled back. down on the ground now. Two away as they get a run across. Good situational hitting right there. Grounds out, gets that run in from third. They get on the board first. Blake Perkins up now for the Brewers. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it, but pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. And that one popped in the air left field. Nabs it and that’ll do it. But they push across one run on one base hit. No errors and no one left. Now to the bottom of the second, it’s the Brewers one and the Padres’s nothing. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Lauriano comes up to hit. This has been a career year for him when it comes to driving in runs. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat, automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Outside low. One and one inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. [Music] [Music] swing and this one’s bounced on the ground. Whips it to first on the run in time. Got him. Batting six leftielder. [Music] Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left-hand bat singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new career high for RBI’s in a season. That catches the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. First pitch strike right there for him. He’s going to have to do that consistently if he’s going to give any length to his skipper. And that misses off the outside edge. headed towards the corner. Carous it and there’s two down. [Music] Batting seven first base Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. That’s towards center. Perkins hauls it in to end the inning. We played two innings. It’s one to nothing. New inning getting started. Here’s the short stop at the plate. Joseph Ortiz. Ortiz hitting ninth in today’s lineup and they went out and made a trade for him last season. King back to work 0 and one. [Applause] And that one is lifted in the air. Merrill on his way over. And out number one on the grab. Now batting Jackson Chorio getting ready to hit. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. That one finds the zone. Strike one. out towards right center field. Merrill coming on. Got it. Nice grab. That’s out number two. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Collins in the box now. No balls in a strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. Two down. Nobody on just missed. bunting for a hit. Picks it up with a bare hand. It’s safe at first. The bunt single. Nearly a highlight reel play at third, but the bare hand grab still wasn’t enough to get the out. Great effort to make that play as close as it was though. Andrew Vaughn the next to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. That one missing inside. This might be a steel situation, but that’s not your average catcher behind the dish. You have to be careful here. Collins leads off first with two down to the inning. Come on, Padre. And that one upstairs. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a runner on the move. Strike in there. Transfer bobbled and there’s no throw. Rudder at second. Two down. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And now three balls and a strike. [Music] Man on second, two down, and a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Brewers strand one. They lead it one- nothing. Back here in San Diego, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s the second baseman, Jake Croninworth. Croninworth, a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy. And in fact, the Rays used him that way. Collins makes the grab. One away. Batting ninth catcher. And now it’s Elias Diaz. And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. And one. One and one. There’s a sinker at the knees for a strike. Swing and that ball smashed on a line. Two down. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. All right, let’s go. Line drive caught. Nothing across here this half. Three innings complete. It’s the Brewers one and the Padres’s nothing. Back here at Petco Park, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Reese Hoskins. check swing called strike. Well, these Brewers doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Highf fly ball right field. Tatis in position. Makes the catch for the out. And a quick out number one. Now the third base struck out swinging his first time. He swings and fouls one off. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. One down, base is empty. got him looking. That’s a strike out. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Monisterio in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And that misses. And that is ball one. The 1-1 is fouled off. There’s a swing and a drive and a foul ball. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. [Music] Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. He picks up his fifth strikeout on the hill. Brewers go down quietly, but they still lead it one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go. Bottom four. Luis Arise stands in. Foul ball there. [Music] Let’s go over to first. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting third base. Here’s another look with Stackcast Singi. The throw needed to be strong to beat the runner and it was. Yeah, that play was close. And I think we need to credit that 88 mile per hour throw as the difference maker right there. That’s just impressive. Now Machado up here worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Ball one there. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. Next offering is in for a strike. That one missed and that is downstairs and the count is three and one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one hammered. That’s back there. Gone. His 27th home run of the season. And it ties it up. It’s 1-1. That’s a great way to fire up this crowd. They’re feeling it now. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. And now the center fielder, Jackson Merrill. Ball one, no strikes. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. And the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Now batting the designated hitter. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. Grounded out to short in his first trip. Snap throw to first. Merrill back in on the dive. Right back to the mound. Could be an easy two. Throw to second into center field. Into third now. So runners at the corners and one out. Runners at the corners here. One away. So digging in now for San Diego, Gavin Sheets. He’s 0 for one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Merryill at third. Lauraniano over at first with one away. Lauriano on the move towards first there for the out. Runner scores from third in there. He’s safe and a 2-1 ball game now. Next for the Padres’s Ryan O’Harn 0 for one with a fly out to center. Pretty good job on the mound in this one. Siggy, it feels like we’ve seen a lot of off-balance swings. Yeah, just one free pass and uh obviously he’s not a big strikeout guy, but he gets soft. The flip to the pitcher covering inning over and it could have been worse. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Onto the top of the fifth we go. It’s the Padres’s two and the Brewers won. And we’re back. Ready now for the fifth inning. Now it’s chance in the hit. And there’s a foul ball. Well, these Brewers, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group outside one and two count. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Next offering is down low. finish him. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Here’s the center fielder Blake Perkins fly to left his first time. swinging a foul straight back. The Padres’s leading by a run and we’re in the top of the fifth. Padres. Here’s the O2 and the pitch is outside. Ball one. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Come on. Punch him out. One down. Base is empty. Two and two. That one misses and the count’s full. Still just the second batter of the inning. And on the mound, he’s already thrown 13 pitches. They got him working hard out there. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along. Joseph Ortiz will hit next. Fly to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Fought off foul. Next offering is fouled back. Another one. That’s five straight strikeouts. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. Jake Cronin, fouled off left side. You know, these Padres’s digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already, and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Up and in. Two balls in a strike. And that is out of play. And now it’s filled up. Really good take especially with two strikes. Swing and a ball hammered left field going back and it’s caught just in front of the wall. Those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Here’s Elias Diaz. 0 for one so far. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Hammered down the right side but foul way inside. Gets out of the way. Two balls, two strikes. Center field. Perkins going back on this one. makes the grab and there’s two away. Now batting rightielder. So the batting order turns over and now the right fielder Fernando Tatiz Jr. Bowl for two in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. and there’s the strike. Broken bat and it’s popped up. And that’s the third out. Three up, three down for San Diego, but they still lead it two to one. Back here in San Diego. And now Jackson Chorio singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. King back to work and a fast ball misses outside for a ball and that’s ball one. So, how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it? It’s heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this ball’s going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground. He enters the picture and breaks a guy’s heart. liner and this could be trouble. Round second digging for third and the tying runs aboard with a leadoff triple. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. runner at third. Nobody out. And now here’s a speed threat. Outfielder Isaac Collins. He’s two for two. That’s a base hit. In to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single. We are tied at two. Well, he delivers in a huge spot right there. Oh, he’s so dialed in. I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there. Very easy swing. Nice and relaxed. This is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Michael King out of the game and a nice effort out of him. No doubt. New arm coming on. We’ll be back for that in a moment. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Nick Paveta. And he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Go ahead run on base. Next is the designated hitter, Andrew Vaughn, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one almost got him. [Applause] with a go-ahad run at first and we’re the top half of the sixth and a count one and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. got him swinging. And here is Hoskin. Definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. [Music] Swing and a miss as he was late that time. Well, a come and get me fast right there. He didn’t look ready for the velocity. I think it’d be a mistake to throw him anything off speed right here. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boo. And a one-two. Now it’s belted deep to left. Way out of here. Home run. That’ll fire up the dugout. And now they’re out in front. It’s 4-2. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. One down. Here’s the third baseman. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Pavetta, 32 years old, and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013. Pavetta maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run. Chris, yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Monisterio stands in now and watches strike one. That’s to third. Machado throws to first in time and that is that. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run. It’s now 42. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here at Petco Park. And now the shortstop Luis Arise. Luis Arise. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. First pitch misses and a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And the sweeper misses for a ball that one fouled off. Two and two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Really love the pitch sequence right there. I’m telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now. Third base, Maddie Machado. here comes Manny Machado. He’s already homered in this game. That misses the zone and it’s one and0. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Two down. Now batting center fielder. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. One for two. [Music] That one’s in there. Strike one. He’s gotten into a really good rhythm. sat down seven in a row. He just wants to get the baseball and deliver it as quickly as possible. Keep the momentum going. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the six. Up the middle. Offbalance throw in time. That ends the frame. Nothing doing there for the Friars. They trail it here four to two. pitching. New pitcher on here, Ron Marinacio. He’s pitching on two days restio. [Music] Danny Jansen to hit here for the Brewers. Catcher Danny Jansen. And that one wrapped foul inside corner for a strike. [Applause] swinging a ground ball, throws across the diamond and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Now batting the center fielder Blake Perkins. So digging in Blake Perkins. And ball one. Action in the pen down there. Jeremiah Estrada, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Peralta getting loose as well. One down, base is empty. Swings through that one out in front that time. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. The one-1 is fouled off. Next offering down low and in the dirt and there’s a ball. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. fouled off again and it remains three and two to the right side. Takes it himself and two away to start the seventh. Now batting short stop Joseph Ortiz. Joseph Ortiz up now for the Brewers. Struck out on just three pitches last time. Come on. Come on. And the first offering is not close. Fast ball for a strike in the air on the infield. O’Harn under it makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. Nobody left for Milwaukee, but they still lead this one four-2. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Nick Mirs hasn’t pitched in the last three days. Number 25 Nick Mir. So here’s the Padres’s DH Raone Lauraniano. Raone Lauraniano. Come on. Swing and a miss. And that is strike one. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. That one fouled hard the other way. Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball, you’re expecting it to make its move at the end, it never does and you’re tied up. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Aaron Ashby, the southpaw, is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. San Diego. That one back up the middle and it gets through and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. [Applause] Back against the wall with two strikes, but found a way. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. And that one in the air, center field. Puts it away for the out. Now batting first base, Ryan O’Harn now at the plate. First offering and it just misses. Way to lay off that pitch down. That’s with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh that misses the zone. Ball three. At this point in the game, you cannot issue free passes. He’s going to have to challenge this hitter. Hitter’s got to be ready to swing it. Jake Croninworth in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Fast ball for a strike at 95. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. Let’s go. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. The tying run at the plate. Got him. Two gone now. Man, just back door him with the breaking ball right there. And I’ll tell you what, as a hitter, it looks like it’s a mile away. So, you give up on it and then it just hooks around that outside corner. Tell you what, if a pitcher can make a pitch like that, you pretty much just have to tip your cap as you walk back to the dugout. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Nick Meers done for the day. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Left-hander out of the bullpen, Aaron Ashby. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Now, here’s Jake Croninworth. Slap the other way. Foul. Now snap throw to first and he dives back in safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy. So you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Gloves it on the dive. The throw. Got him. A beautiful play to end the inning. Padres’s leave one. Still down by a count of four to two. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Wand Peralta. and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. One for three. The other way. No trouble here. puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Next for the Brewers, Isaac Collins. Three for three with three singles. And that drops in for a strike. swing and a miss and he got him to chase. [Applause] Next offering is downstairs. Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and it drops in. Now batting designated hitter Andrew Vaughn. So a man aboard Andrew Vaughn up now for the Brewers. 0 for three in this one. Here’s a swing and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners with one out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. That one misses one and0. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. And that’s outside in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Ripped to third on Croninworth. What a double play that was. Inning over. So, it’s no runs on two base hits, no errors, and one left on base. Last half of the eighth coming up, it’s the Brewers four and the Padres’s two. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. And now here is Elias Diaz. Right down to shoot and one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in a count. The next offering misses and the count is one and one. That one to first. Let’s go. Let’s go. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. So with one down, it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen and he drops it down the third baseline. Bare hands it. Tough play picked in the dirt, but he beats it. What an effort that time. You knew it was going to be a close play the entire time and that’s exactly how it played out. Solid attempt by the third baseman, but it was always going to be tough with such a speedy runner going down the line. And the batter will be the shortstop, Luis Az. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Tying run at the plate on the ground out to short and that one finds its way through. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Manny Machado to the dish for a pivotal at bat. First pitch and he just misses at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning inning double play. Boog. Two on, one out. Last two pitches have been down in the zone. Pitcher clearly trying to get that ground ball double play, but in this count, he’s going to have to give in, elevate his pitches, and get back into this at bat. That’s a strike up the middle, finds its way through. Base hit. Now a long throw home. Save. In comes the run from second and it’s a one-run game. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. Substitution now at first base and pinch running for the Padres’s. Mason McCoy. Jackson Merrill steps to the plate in a clutch situation. Pitch is in there. It’s 0 and one. One out. The possible tying and go ahead runs on base. Tap foul at the plate. So the tying run at second gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. That misses the zone and the count one and two in the air on the infield and the infield fly is called now batting the hitter. So digging in now for San Diego Raone Lauraniano. rolled softly but that goes foul. Two on, two outs. Right side hard hit fires over to Hoskins and Lauriano is retired. They limit the damage here, but the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Kyle Hart. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Number 21 at the plate now. That’s ball one. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Yuki Matsui, the young lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Number 72 warming up as well. Hard hit right side slings to first and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. Now batting second base next for Milwaukee Andrew Monisterio. [Music] That misses. Ball one. And another ball. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. one-run game here in the top of the ninth. That’s a strike and the count is even. Two and two. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. One down, base is empty to third. On to O’Harn. Two quick outs here in the top of the ninth. Running out of chances to pad the lead. Danny Jans. Two down, base is empty. And now Danny Jansen not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth. So it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. Outside low and that is ball one. swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Digging in is the switch in outfielder Blake Perkins. misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. [Music] That one the other way. Makes the catch in. So, one hit is all they get. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Brewers four and the Padres’s three. Welcome back. And here comes the closer, Abner. Save opportunity for him right here. And he’s their guy. Time to lock this one down and get out of here with a W. Now the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. He’s been a great free agent side. That’s outside. Ball one. And there’s the strike. and a count one and two looking to get the tying run on base and a swing and a miss. One out. Bottom of the ninth. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. Oh, the next to hit takes outside trying to close out a one-run lead and the home team trying to pull it out. in the air left field down the line and that’s a fair ball and the tying runs at second base with a double. Just a clutch at bat right there. Big time swing when this team really needed it. And now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Down the middle for a strike and it’s 0 and one trying to keep the game alive here in the bottom of the ninth. Late swing fouled to the left. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. Next offering miss is down and away. And that’s down and away. [Applause] Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock. Heading for the plate. Here’s the throw. It’s offline and he scores. It’s 44. Huge moment for him and his team. Boo. You know, some guys just grip it a bit too tight in a big spot like this having a chance to tie it up in the bottom of the ninth. But he didn’t let the moment get to him. comes up with the RBI knock and now he’s given his teammates a chance to walk this thing off with the win if they can push across another run. And that one fouled off. 4-4 in the ninth. That’s too low. And a count even. One and one. Movement in Milwaukee’s bullpen. Jacob Miserowski appears to be getting loose. Tied at four. Runner on the go. Fouled off down the right side. And he grounds one to the right side and foul ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Fernando Tatiz Jr. to hit here. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. Check on the runner. Croninworth dives back in. Little bit low. Two outs, but the winning run is at first. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] That one outside. Two balls, two strikes. And misses inside. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. Trying to send this to extra innings. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the third out and we’ll play extra innings in this one. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now tied 4-4. Back after this on the show. And we’re back on to extra innings. Up now for Milwaukee. Joseph Ortiz. As a pitcher, you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run. So, you really have to execute on the mound. Yeah, that’s downstairs and outside. And that’s in for a strike. And now it’s even one and one. Just missed. hit hard. Should be extra bases. Runner around third. He will score and they take the lead into second easily with a leadoff double. Well, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. how there are several ways that they can get this run across. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Now it’s the right fielder Jackson Chorio. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Sliced hard but foul. Pitch is in the dirt now. One and two. Movement in the bullpen. Yuki Matsui, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. Number 72, also throwing. One on, nobody out. A run in here in extra innings. Inside the countdown two and two. [Music] out to short. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly and no shot to get him at first. There’s two aboard. Looked to me like he kind of let the ball play him instead of playing the ball and it just ate him off. hands get stiff and even the best infielders make these kinds of mistakes. You just have to learn from it and move on. Next for the Brewers, Isaac Collins, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bun. Check swing called strike. And that’s strike one. And a foul ball. Ortiz on second. Chorio on at first with nobody out. Collins checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. Didn’t go. Grounder might be two. There’s one. How about that double play? He’s so good at coming across the bag and snagging it with the bare hand to throw. I like the flare that he brings day in and day out. Now it’s the DH Andrew Vaughn. line drive and it goes just foul. Just a matter of inches from picking up an RBI base hit and maybe a double in the process. That was barely foul. Two outs and a runner at third. And here in extra innings to the right side, O’Harn takes it to the bag that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Brewers pick up a run on this RBI double. It’s now a 54 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Jacob Miserowski. Well, he’s a big time. Well, one-run game stepping in for San Diego, Luis Az. So important to stay within yourself, especially for this hitter. Not known to be a power guy or a home run hitter. He needs to set the table by getting on with a walk or a base hit. There’s the strike. In today’s game, outs are valuable. So, guys aren’t just willing to give themselves up to advance a runner. They’re trying to drive him in as well in the process. So, I don’t expect him to shorten up and just try to hit behind the runner here. A short stop takes a ball. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. and right back to the mound. Tosses to first. One out in the bottom of the tenth. Now batting third base. Now the third baseman, Mason McCoy, getting his first played appearance here in extra innings. He entered the game as a pinch runner [Applause] in there for strike one. Wait for your pitch [Applause] and fouled off. I think ultimately you want to tie him up, get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield. And a foul ball. He stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground, right side, and it’s just fouled. That was close. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. Breaking ball misses down and away. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the play disciplined to lay off of that pitch. That misses the zone. Two and two. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. On the ground right side to the plate. Safe and we are tied. [Applause] One down, runner at first. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jackson Merrill. ripped, but a curls foul. Oh, wow. That was so close to ending this one, man. Just bent into foul territory at the last second. I’m telling you, it can be tough to refocus and and get back into the rest of this at bat, but he’s got to find a way to do it right here. One down, winning run out at first. That one down the line and foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two out. Well, I’ve always said it’s tough. A elevated fast ball you see so well, hard to lay off of. Well, when you’re talking about 100 milesPH, chances of catching up are next to none. So, you see that one just blown right by him. I think you’re going to have to start a lot earlier if you’re going to catch up to that speed. So, now here’s the DH. Raone Lauriano. First pitch not close with the winning run on at first and we’re in the last half of the 10th and that’s outside. Got to be real careful here. 20. He’s hunting for his pitch. And another ball. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Gavin Sheets in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Here’s a three 0 ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. First and second, two outs. Here’s the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. Oh, how he’d love to walk it off right here. [Applause] That pitch gets the corner. 0 and one. There it was. A high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He’s got good stuff. Pitch inside the zone and trust it. And that misses and it’s one and one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. And he takes one right out of the black. That is strike two. in the dirt but kept close. Tag out and they cut down the winning run at third and we’re headed to the 11th. So they scratch across a run here on no hits, no errors and a man left. On to inning number 11 we go. We’re all tied up 55 back here in San Diego now. Here is Reese Hoskins. Hart back to work. That misses and that’s ball one. Hard hit left side over to first. Great pick. Good stretch there to make the play. It looks like someone added a little yoga to their daily routine if you ask me. Here’s the third baseman. First pitch and that’s in for a strike. [Applause] fought off. Foul going to now. There’s a high chopper. The rise to first. Safe and runners at the corners after the infield single. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. Two on, one out. Monisterio digs in now and there’s the strike. I love this part of the game. Does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher? I know he’s fast, but it’s pretty risky. With a go ahead run at third and we’re here in the top half of the 11th. Swings and misses. And it’s nothing and two. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. Two on, one out. Squangan belted way back there into the corner, but foul. Wow, that was about as close as it gets to giving them the lead late in this game. Just barely on the foul side of that painted line. [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Oh, really went aggressive in with that slider. Good two strike pitch right there. At worst case scenario, it’s weak contact in play. Exactly where he and the catcher wanted it. Here’s the Brewers catcher now. Danny Jansen. Tap foul at the plate. misses inside and one and one and that is out of play. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. Two outs. Headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. That misses. Now two and two. That’s a really good take. Fights it off. He’ll see another. [Music] Two on, two outs. Hit hard on the ground to short to second. There’s Cronin. They miss a big chance to take the lead here late. No runs, a hit, two left. One run can win it as we move to the bottom of the 11th. We’re all tied up 55. All set for the bottom of the 11th. Now the left fielder Gavin Sheetsav that one in triple digits. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there. But let the bat on his shoulder. Next offering upstairs. man at second and that’s outside. And downstairs feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Ryan O’Harn in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That one is absolutely belted and it one hops the wall headed for the plate. In comes the winning run and the Padres’s walk it off in the 11th. You know, he had to feel the pressure. Winning run on second base. Found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score. Everyone going crazy. Exciting finish to this game today. 65 the final here today. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
