And with the season rapidly approaching, just a week away from training cramp training camp, excuse me, officially opening, now is a great time to get back into the swing with us here at Lockdown Grizzlies. And I hinted on yesterday’s show that I had a hot take about one jaw. And I know I got some folks fired up with me. I believe it was last Thursday when I talked about, you know, a little bit of a trick saying that we were asking too much of Jaw and how that he was, you know, because he is as the uh silly top 100 list. And again, if you’re on YouTube, I’m showing it as we speak. If you’re not on YouTube, John Mar was ranked number 28 on the locked on NBA top 100 players list, which was ridiculous then. It still remains ridiculous. And I’m not going to belabor that point. I’ve talked about it a lot, but I wanted to play into that a little bit, have a little bit of fun today. I am 100% serious. This is not a bit, this is not a joke. This is truly how I feel about John Morant heading into the 2025, 2026 NBA season. I believe this is going to be the best season of John Mar’s career. And I believe he will be in the top 10, if not top five in MVP voting for two reasons. one opportunity and two availability. Those are the two in my mind most logical arguments to make for John Morant making a leap into second and perhaps even first team allNNBA consideration. The opportunity piece comes twofold. Number one, Desmond Bane is no longer a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. If you follow the NBA, especially the Grizzlies at large, you understand that to be true. Desmond Bane has been traded to the Orlando Magic. That happened a few months ago. And now the Grizzlies are in a world where instead of three top 50 players in the league on their roster, they have two. They’re potentially deeper. They’ve theoretically replaced Bane with Tai Jerome, Contavius Cwell Pope, the ability to resign Santi Alama, have Jiren Jackson Jr. long-term on a much bigger contract. The financial flexibility and the additional draft capital make the Grizzlies more able to build around Jaw and Jiren Jackson Jr. in the years to come. So Jarant is going to have a chance to take on more usage, more scoring load, more importance to the Grizzlies offense than he has in some time since perhaps dating back to his rookie campaign. Because we have to remember Desmond Bane was drafted in the 2020 NBA draft and Dez was not Dez as a rookie. John Morant was Jarant almost by that point. So while Bane was an ideal backcourt partner for Jaw in terms of his shooting, in terms of his ability to create for himself later on in their partnership, there’s no denying that that is going to take some adjustment. But if there were any players in the NBA that I would be willing to bet on being able to make that adjustment and then some because of their own individual skill, it’s John Morant. The elite athleticism that he still has, the elite handle that he has. He’s one of the best ball handlers in the NBA. He’s obviously one of the fastest with the ball in his hands. And that skill directly connects and correlates to opportunity to score the ball in the NBA. Another reason that he has an opportunity to be among the top 10 or so players in the league in all NBA voting is because of guys that aren’t going to be there, right? Joel Embiid almost certainly not going to be in that mix. Jason Tatum, Tyresese Hallebertton, multiple stars out for most of if not all of the season. Kyrie Irving’s in that boat, too. And I know what some of you are thinking. Joe, you’re delusional. John Morant is also going to miss lots of games. He’s only played more than 65 games once in his entire career in any given season. And that all may well be true. But I do believe that there is a greater sense of urgency now for Jaw than there has been in some time because of the fact that so much change has come to the Memphis Grizzlies. talked about that a little bit on yesterday’s show with Demich to Iselo entering his first training camp. We have no idea what to truly expect because Iselo hasn’t had an NBA training camp yet. He was landing the plane last year. You can’t really judge him based off of what we saw there. We have no idea what this team with this level of talent in Jaw and Jiren is going to look like without Desmond Bane because their progression, their growth, their development has come almost in lock step. Jaw was the rookie of the year obviously without Dez, but other improvements in Morance’s game came with Desmond Bane in the fold. So what will the team be? We’re not sure. And I think that that can spark something in an athlete. It can lead a player like John Morant who has the talent and the skill and everything in the world in front of him to be able to do things that haven’t been done by him or a Grizzlies player period. And I do see that opportunity being something that Morant is inspired by. I think that Jaw will come into this season with a mentality to attack to attack the rim to attack on the defensive end of the court. He is going to be given cart blanch to do what he deems necessary on the offensive end. That is one thing that we can infer about Tumas iso system. the importance of Zach Edi that’s clearly there and the importance of John Morant in terms of that initial screen that initial action at the top or at the side of the key to try to get into offense the screens that matter there and the creation off of that space that is created by that screen. There are few if any in the NBA better than Jaw Morant when you combine vision handle the ability to get to the paint. But the one caveat to all of this this ceiling for Jaw being a top five or 10 player in the league is he has to rediscover some of that audacity. And that’s one of the hardest parts. How much of what Jaw Morant’s mentality was was connected to everything that Jaw does beyond basketball. too, or can he channel that energy to the basketball court in particular? I’m optimistic, thanks to the grenade throwing response to uh folks giving him a hard time for his celebrations last season, that he can channel it in a basketball sense because this is a guy who wants to be his authentic self whenever possible. And on the basketball court, it’s pretty clear that that’s the cleanest avenue for him to do just that. So, the audacity, the dunks, the willingness to try to dunk on anybody. You have to be selective. I’m not saying he does that on a a random Tuesday night against the, you know, Milwaukee Bucks, but I do think there needs to be times where messages are sent in terms of how he attacks the lane. He can’t change who he is as a basketball player because who he is as a basketball player is what got him to this point. You can change your skill sets. You can develop your mid-range jumper. You can find yourself in better position to get better lift on a three-point shot. There are ways in the off seasonason to add tools to the toolkit, but to take away from what comp what competition did to you to mold and mix your mind the audacity. I keep coming back to that word that John Mor played with. If he can bring that back and stay on the court and walk that line, I think that we are looking at a guy that has a ceiling that is darkhorse MVP contender and that’s exciting. I’m excited for the season ahead for John Mar. What say you? Let me know in the comments. Hit me up on social media. John’s 2025 2026 ceiling. What do you see it as? When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies, we’re going to continue this conversation, not necessarily about Jaw, but we are going to talk about another major component to the beginning of the season with Zack Edy missing the start of the regular season. Who should be the starter next to Jiren Jackson Jr. We’re going to play pros and cons with Brandon Clark and Santi Alama. Stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies. Today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Monarch Money. Two guys that have clean bills of health in the case of Clark and or they have a fresh new contract in the case of Santi Alama. Two guys that have been key reserves for the Memphis Grizzlies at multiple times over the last several years. But with the injury to Zack Edy, you are going to see one of those two almost certainly be the starting big next to Jiren Jackson Jr. What will that look like depending on which player is the choice? For me, I in am really intrigued, as I mentioned earlier in the show, in this idea of John Mar being the fulcrum point, being the key cog to the Grizzlies offense. I am all in on Jarant. And in theory, the Grizzlies should be all in on John Mar because he is the one true max contract player that they have on their roster. Jiren Jackson Jr. signed a major extension, big pay raise, not a true max contract. So Jaw’s the guy, at least in terms of finances. So going allin with him, whether you agree or disagree because of his mentality or his health, you know, I’ll leave that up to you. But from a financial standpoint, the Grizzlies have made their choice. This is John Morant’s team with Jiren Jackson Jr. being very much in that mix too when you look at the starting five and you assume that Contavius Cwell Pope who we’ll talk more about in a little bit is in right he’s in that conversation in some way shape or form and then you assume that Jaylen Wells on the perimeter also in that conversation you have two really good defenders that are almost certainly going to be starters for this Grizzlies team and I personally would lean into that idea of defense starting the game off on a strong note. So I would go Brandon Clark ahead of Santi Alama in terms of how the Grizzlies begin this season because there’s so much data that suggests that Jiren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clark are two of the best defensive bigs, especially when they’re together in the NBA. The switch ability, the capacity to change roles on the fly. They know each other really well on that end of the court. They have a lot of chemistry defensively. And Brandon Clark, although he is undersized as a center, he’s what, 6’8 roughly, he’s undersized, but he his leap ability, his extension defensively, his role is in the dunker spot offensively in terms of pick and roll sets. He plays bigger than what his size actually is, but he has the athleticism in the movement coming off of that PCL sprain of his knee being 100% cleared as the Michael record reported last week. That to me holds greater value for what the Grizzlies are trying to do this season than putting Santi out there with Jiren and the offensive opportunity that would exist there. Now, there’s trade-offs, right? And by all means, hit me up in the comments. Let me know on X at Joe Mullenex how you’re feeling about this idea of Clark over Santi. Jaylen Wells is limited offensively. Deich has talked about that and I don’t disagree with that mentality. Jaylen can shoot. We know that. But in terms of that secondary creation that Desmond Bane was so good at, that is not Well’s strength at this stage of his career. And it’s not really Contavius Cwell Pope’s strength either. KCP is at his best and we’ll talk more about this. When he’s able to stand in the corner or stand at the three-point line, somebody creates for him, gets him an open look and he takes it. KCP is not somebody that you have creating off the dribble, making extra passes either. So Santi Alama and Ty Jerome to a lesser extent are definitely going to be those offensive pieces that are asked to do that more than a KCP or Jaylen Wells. But if you have strong defenders on the perimeter already and you’re leaning into that angle, and maybe they’re not, right? Maybe KCP’s not a starter. We’ll talk more about that. But if it’s Wells and Contavius Cwell Pope, I would go all in on that. And if you put Brandon Clark out there next to Jiren Jackson Jr., that allows for you to have four plus to elite in the case of Jiren defenders around Jaw. And it gives Jaw the chance to defend whoever the least impactful offensive player within logical reason, right? You’re not going to have him defend, you know, Damont Sabonis or Sangun from Houston, but you’re going to give Jaw the chance to take the keys to the kingdom offensively, not have to overwhelm himself defensively, although he has improved on that end, and the other four can cook. And it allows for Jiren to be the true second offensive option where he should thrive next to Jaw. Jiren has to be able to create offensively for others and that’s something that to Michael and I can talk more about tomorrow later on this week down the road here on Lockdown Grizzlies. He hasn’t done that consistently enough. That’s a major key component to success this season for Memphis, too. But Clark has that experience. He has that defensive ability. He has the switch ability. He can defend multiple positions. Santi Alama theoretically can do the same. But Santi is not the defender that Clark is. He doesn’t have that lateral movement. He doesn’t have that capacity. And Jiren can still play the four quote unquote with Brandon Clark next to him. It sounds like an oxymoron. Doesn’t doesn’t sound like it makes a ton of sense because Clark is smaller at least in terms of height than Santi Alama. Santi is about 6′ 11. So you would have a Twin Towers kind of situation with Jared and Santi, but their offensive games are too similar. That’s another reason why I would go Clark over Santi. Jiren and Santi both are perimeter-based bigs. You need somebody that can roll to the rim. You need somebody that that can be that aggressive finisher that can catch lobs from Jaw and the pick and roll. And that’s Clark. That’s not Santi. You want Santi on the perimeter. He’s an offensively skilled player. You want him to have those chances to create those shots on his own. And obviously Jiren is one of the best isolation scorers in the entire NBA. So Jiren’s going to have those chances to get more one-on-one looks with Jaw hopefully being more aggressive on the offensive end to look for his own shot like we talked about a little bit earlier. So, I I think that positionally, even though it’s not entirely logical because of Clark’s size, I think that Clark is the more true center. Clark is the guy that goes out there and actually gives you what you need from that position more than anybody else on the roster, not a Jock Landale or anybody like that. I think Clark, if healthy, gives you enough defensive versatility plus enough as a role man in the offense. He’s not going to be the screen center that Zach Edi is because, you know, physics is a thing, right? I think he gives up 8 in and about 50 pounds to Zack Edy. So, Edy is going to be a better screener just because he physically has the tools to do so. But I do see Clark being the better option in that twoman game with Jaw on the offensive end and then the twoman game defensively with Jiren Jackson Jr. on the other side of the court. I’m excited for both of those partnerships to flourish. Clark has obviously been with Jiren and Jaws since the beginning. Clark was a a part of that 2019 draft class with John Morant. They have chemistry in a time where there’s a lot of change going on in the Grizzlies organization, leaning into the guys that know each other best that can really help this team get off to the fast start that it needs. That would be my preference. So, I would go Brandon Clark starting next to Jiren Jackson Jr., not Santi Alama. Let me know on X at Joe Molanax. Hit me up in the comments. Do you agree? Do you disagree? I’m sure there’ll be lots more conversations about rotations in the days and weeks to come. When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies, we’re going to close out this episode of the show, taking a look at Kavius Cowwell Pope, what’s his best role on the team after that segment. You probably have an idea of where I’m leaning, but I look forward to talking out a little bit more with you guys coming up. Stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies. Uh it’s assumed by most, I would imagine, that he will be in that starting lineup mix on the wing. The Grizzlies are looking for dogs. Talked about that a couple of times now. And Contavius Cwell Pope is most certainly that. But he signs this contract with the Orlando Magic. Disappoints in his year with the team. And the Grizzlies are taking a flyer on the guy. Is he simply cap FOD to make the Desmond Bane trade work? I don’t think so. I think the guy that was that was more true for Cole Anthony is no longer on the roster. Right. The Grizzlies clearly preferred Ty Jerome to Cole Anthony. So, I am more of the mind that KCP is a part of the long-term, at least this season conversation of where the Grizzlies are going to go and his best role is as that starting wing that takes on difficult defensive assignments for me because I think that with Ty Jerome in the fold who can play either combo guard spot with Santi Alama in the fold, we’ve already established he’ll be a reserve even with, you know, Zack Edy out, I think Brandon Clark should be the starter. Santi is that combo forward, combo front court player that can fit and mix and match and mold with a lot of different lineup combinations. I think the KCP the thing to maximize Cwell Pope’s value is to make sure that he plays with Jaw Morant and Tai Jerome as much as possible. I don’t know that I would have him align with Scottie Pippen as much simply because Jaw and Tai have offensive tools that Scotty while Scotty is a underrated offensive player. I think that Jaw and Jerome are going to get more attention than Scotty will and that will allow for KCP to be the offensive spacer that he has shown the capacity to be. His best seasons were alongside Nicola Joic out in Denver. And that shouldn’t surprise anybody. Jookic is arguably the best creator of offense both for himself and for others in the entire NBA right now. So when you have an top 10 or 12 all-time player on your roster that’s capable of doing the things that Jokic is capable of doing, naturally KCP is going to have the opportunity to get open looks. Jaw is not Jokic. Ty Jerome is most certainly not Joic, but you’re going to have guys in Memphis that are going to command that attention that are actually going to be able to get KCP the ball. That was the issue in Orlando. There was no true point guard. That’s not Jaylen Stugs’ strength. And Orlando, you know, they have Taius Jones now, but the Magic still struggle in that space outside of Jones. Who’s going to get these guys the ball? They have lots of talented scorers and creators, but if they see Desmond Bane as that kind of guy, they’re going to be disappointed. I’ve talked to folks on uh covering the magic about that. KCP needs those types that are going to be able to take the I hate the term, but gravity that they have and utilize it to get him open looks and so he can get in rhythm. That is the best use of Callwell Pope at this stage. Plus, as a slasher, right, that’s the secondary idea for him offensively. You set up yourself, you show that you can shoot. KCP still has the ability to cut to the basket and being able to find that guy off of, you know, high lows and things of that nature offensively, that’s going to be a major use of him as well. But I think him being a starter and being that veteran player, Parker Fleming of Subscalitus wrote about this recently. You know, Jaw and Jiren are the veterans, right? They are the veteran players on this team. They have been around since 2018 in the case of Jiren, 2019 in the case of Jaw. But KCP has been to the mountaintop. He’s won a championship. He knows what it takes. He’s kind of like a Marcus Smart replacement in that way. Can he be the guy that helps these guys when things get tough? Can he help be the spiritual guide through the adversity of an NBA season? Remains to be seen. But John Jiren have not been out of the semi-finals of the Western Conference. KCP has been in the mix at the highest levels of NBA basketball on numerous occasions. So I do believe in his value as a veteran in that space. And I think having him out there as a starter playing 25 to 27 minutes a night because you got to remember you got GI Jackson, you’ve got Vince Williams Jr., You’ve got Cedric Coward. You have numerous younger wings that the Grizzlies, Zack Kleman, their GM, the coach Tumaselo, they almost certainly are hopeful that these guys are going to be able to take the mantle from KCP and be the talented scorers in the case of GG, two-way players in the case of Vince Williams Jr., the hypothetical greatness of Cedric Coward that so many people see the potential, but we have to see it actually become fui actually come to fruition. It actually has to be before you can get too excited about it. I get all of that completely. But the Grizzlies have numerous young wings that they’re hoping at least one of them is going to pop. They’re hoping that somebody’s going to be in that moment to compete. So whether it’s with him in that veteran role being a guide to the team, whether it’s him eventually becoming a reserve as Cedric Coward or Gigi Jackson or Vince Williams Jr. is able to take on that mantle. However it plays out, I think that starting the season, you need KCP to be that defensive maven. You need him to be that that mentally tough come out every night and compete. Not to be a model of the behavior because I think Jaw and Jiren have been around enough that they should be able to do that themselves. But you have to keep in mind this Grizzlies roster is still pretty young beyond those guys, right? Jaylen Wells going into his second season. Zakiti going into his second season. Gigi Jackson, although he’s going into his third season, is still one of the youngest players in the NBA. So, you have numerous pieces on this team, even if it may not be Jaw and Jiren, that need to be shown the way to be an NBA player and how to compete in practice and how to defend at a high level and understand film study and prepare like a professional basketball player should. To go allin on youth would be a mistake. And I think the KCP brings a level of intensity. I think that he brings an experience that only success, only achieving at the highest possible mountaintop that the NBA provides. That adds credibility when he says something about what’s happening in practice or how to respond in a tough situation in a game. Players listen to that. and Tumas iso as he embarks on his first full NBA season as a head coach. He needs players like that to be able to echo what he says because coming from a coach, maybe it falls on deaf ears every once in a while. Talking from somebody like Contavius Cwell Pope, it’s going to be a little bit different. Thank you so much for being with me on this edition of Lockdown Grizzlies. It is much appreciated. 1. Tuomas Iisalo is the stabilizing presence and big brother that Ja needs to unlock his next version and Ja is the perfect type of player for Iisalo’s system so it’s a match made in heaven.

  2. I hope Ja does bounce back because if he isnt that level of player and the team falls in the lottery. There's a real chance they pivot with 2 great picks in 2026

  3. In many ways I think, Ja has been held back by overthinking in terms of injuries ( not to jump and not to dunk ) and suspension. Most of Ja's injuries never were after a dunk or how he landed after a dunk. Also the system last year didn't suit him and didn't allow him to be his best. Hopefully, Ja is his audacious self this season and he will surely be top5 player in NBA which he showed glimpses of at the end of the last season. In his best season so far, couple years ago, Ja when he didn't overthink and would be all in, he would be the best player on court even against Curry, Lebron, Edwards etc. If he gets back to the same mentality Memphis could go further than ever before.

  4. To be fair I think, Bane was a bit overrated. Good shooter but he never had a good chemistry with Ja and his decision at the end of games would make Grizzlies lose games. Bane was purely a good shooter and he would be a score-first guard and would try often to take over scoring duties from Ja but he only averaged just over 19 points last season which is fine but not enough to be a primary scorer. While Ja had 23+average when he was a pass-first guard and allowing everyone else to score first.
I think Memphis is much better off allowing Ja being high volume scorer 30+ and having a lot of good defenders around him and players that support him. That's when Memphis is the best when Ja is at his best and scores a lot.

  5. Clarke should start, if healthy, and even when everyone is healthy he should start or at least play a lot of minutes as he helps to win so many games and has great, maybe even the best on the team, chemistry with Ja.

  6. Stop with the goofy hating dude. Jaren contract is a max and being reported as a max from what they can offer him. You super lame for that. Maybe Jaren should play half a** on defense to save for offense. Especially since he’s a better number 1. I mean it’s only right since we got excuses. It’s not like we ain’t seen Jaren be a high level scorer

  7. I know this won't be a popular opinion BUT J Landale is the best option to start the season … because he is a true center with a big body …. making a better screener and pick and roller ….

  8. Ja needs to give up on trying to dunk on people in traffic, I'm sorry. He is the biggest driver of winning on the team and is more valuable ON THE COURT, helping the team win. He is also, however, skinny and vulnerable to getting hurt when he tries to throw down poster dunks on people in traffic. Why not stick to the flashy dunks when you're open or on a breakaway? There is nothing wrong with a layup…I see guys in the league making layups that are virtually as flashy as a dunk sometimes with their skill/creativity…I worry very much that Ja will go the route of Derrick Rose and be robbed of many of his best years. I care about winning. I don't see how this is an issue…the team should be telling him to avoid the aggressiveness in the paint to save his body for the team.

  9. i think bane was a clear bad fit for the grizz last year, he made too many turnovers. I actually expect the grizz to do better this year. they got coward, ty jerome, aldama, those are people that can replace him well
