đź”´ LIVE : Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics | Sept 23rd FULL GAME | MLB THE SHOW 25 SIMULATION
So just about set now and on the hill in this one, Mitch Spence. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Let’s go, man. [Applause] And a foul ball. [Applause] Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And the count even one and one. swinging a miss at a slider. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. Swing and a miss. Stripped him out. Chased the fast up the ladder for strike three. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Carlos Koreah now at the plate as he swings through strike one and a strike in there. [Applause] swing and a line drive, slicing into right field. Cortez makes the grab and there’s two gone. Take a look at the lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus, Christian Walker. And he’s leading them in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big. They feel like all this pressure. I’ve got to get these runs in. But somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So watch out when he comes to the plate. Isach Paradis stands in here, takes ball one low. Two out. Space is empty. Swinging a miss. Strike one. He swings and fouls one off. Two down. Nobody on. That one misses. Two and two. out to center. Butler and puts the squeeze on that one. And that is that. Onto the bottom of the first. No score. Back here with my pal Singi and getting to start Jason Alexander. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble, trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler first offering and it just misses. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the hour. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. They’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a cookie, you don’t want to miss it. And that’s in there at the knees quickly into an 02 count. Both pitches were down in the zone. I think you set your sights a little bit higher cuz you’ll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area. Two down, base is empty. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts, and a foul ball. [Music] That’s outside and it’s one and one [Music] and downstairs. [Applause] Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one back there and it’s out of here. A massive home run. His 34th of the season. The Athletics score first. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. [Applause] change up in the zone is a hitter’s dream. It’s a BP fast ball, but you’re playing in real time. Most times pitcher asking for a new baseball just like right there. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. Swinging it a ground ball. Altuve slings to first. That’s the inning. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the start of the inning. Here’s the left fielder, Jesus Sanchez. Spence back to work. That one down the line. And that’s just foul. check swing and he went. No balls, two strikes. One ball, two strikes. [Music] s down on strikes. Couldn’t pull the trigger on a fast ball at the knees. That fit and stepping in for the Astros, Christian Walker. And he takes the strike. One out. Base is empty. Outside low. And now it’s even. One and one. Rusty Valentine doing the umpiring behind the dish for us. Maybe the best name in the league. Yeah, that’s a solid one. No doubt. I mean, who’s better to ask than you? I kind of wonder if Rusty is his actual name or just a nickname. Yeah, no clue. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Anyways, Rusty’s got a good zone. Very good on the corners of the plate, but he’ll give pitchers a little bit above the letters and below the knees if they’re earning it. And that’s outside. [Music] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. See you later. And that should quiet this home crowd. And we’re all square. It’s 1-1. Oh, that one won’t stay below the radar. That made a lot of noise. For a pitcher, the odds are in your favor if you keep that breaking ball down. That time he got punished for it. Hitter just did a really good job of staying within himself and getting the barrel to the baseball. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Diaz will hit next. That one’s in there. 0 and one. [Applause] out towards right center. That’s well struck. This one could be trouble around first heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. So, next up for Houston, Jake Meyers. And that one fouled off. [Applause] [Applause] in the dirt. Diaz, the runner at second with one away. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Applause] bows it off. Still one and two. [Music] [Applause] Down in the dirt, swinging a miss. Bro sails on him and it takes off down the line and he’ll make it up to third here because of the throwing error. That’s a tough spot for the catcher. no chance of stopping the outside pitch and now the runner moves up. Those moments can be really frustrating. [Applause] And next to hit for Houston, Zack Cole. Golden opportunity right here. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Tied up here in the early going. [Applause] And a count one and two. [Applause] swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. One runs in, another comes in to score and it’s three to one. That’s all he needed. Just a simple base hit and he drives in two in a huge spot. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. There’s the strike. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground and you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. Still only one out here in the inning. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Back to the top of the lineup now. A chance for Jose Altuve. struck out swinging his first time [Applause] and that is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. [Applause] Base hit. And now first and second with two outs. Up next for the Astros, the designated hitter, Carlos Korea. Here’s Carlos Koreah. Fouled off down the right side. First and second, two down here in the top of the second. Slice the other way and foul. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Korea tries to hold up. Appeal to first. It did not go around. in the dirt but kept close [Applause] off the plate inside and now three and two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Headed for the plate. One run is in. Altuve rounds third. Headed for the plate. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Back to back base hits. Textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone, and just barrel it up. Went the other way for the knock. So, runner at second, two down. Paradus now at the plate. First pitch and he just misses. runner at second. Two down [Applause] on the ground right side. Schuman. Sends it to first and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. But nine batters hit in the inning. Five come around to score. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Astros five and the A’s won. And we’re back. And here is Jacob Wilson. This guy is an elite level hitter, especially considering contact. Just the ability to hit for average. What you really like though stays in against those righties. And that’s not so easy as a right-handed batter. The other way. Cole makes the grab. One down. batting six right fielder Carlos Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s swing and a miss strike one good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it out of bounce right side throws to first in Time already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Short stop Daryl Hern. Two outs. Space is empty. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Daryl Hern. Just missed. Slashed foul down the right side. That’ll hook off into the seats. Just missed. That’s ripped. Base hit. And that extends the inning. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going catcher Willie Macyver. And now here’s the A’s catcher, Willie Macgyver. [Applause] They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. That ninth, second baseman, Max Schum. Next up for the A’s, Max Schuman. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Two aboard, two outs. Two balls, no strikes to count. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. And another ball. Next offering in there for a strike and a count is three and one. Here’s [Applause] a swag and a drive left field and he knew it. [Applause] Third home run of the season and they throw three on the board. It’s 54. He put a charge into that one. That was a lightning swing right there. No doubt about it. Anytime [Applause] you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one, nice piece of hitting there at the plate. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s. 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at bat. That one ripped in. One hops off the wall. Should be extra bases and into second easily with a two out double. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. He got a pitch he could drive, but he didn’t get too excited like a lot of guys do and pull off the baseball. Really good timing all the way through the swing and the barrel was so on playing with the ball. Easy drive into the gap for that double man in scoring position with two away. Brent Rooker the next to hit. Struck out swinging his first time. Right through there for a strike. Butler at second with two down. [Applause] Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Meyers moving under this one. He makes the grab and that is the inning. A’s draw closer on this homer. It’s down to one at 54. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. On to the third inning. And here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Jesus Sanchez. Though Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. That’s off the inside corner. Ball two. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. Kurts takes it himself. Lead off hitter gone in the third. Walker. Christian Walker digs in now. He’s already homered here in this one. To the right side. Kurtz steps on first for the out. Good armside run and sink on that pitch right there. Got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out. Diaz. Two down, base is empty and stepping in for the Astros. Yer Diaz doubled his first time up in there for strike one. Ball inside. Hard hit but right at him and left. One, two, three go the Astros. They lead it 5-4. set for the bottom of the third. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Kurts. Nick Curts. Carley’s back out here for the third. And after the first couple of innings, pretty rough. I think the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length. See if he can save the bullpen some. Next offering is fouled back and takes low for ball one. [Applause] comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt in time and a drop third strike leads to the first outi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone. Tyler Soderstrom will hit next. swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field, squeezes it. Two down. That’s a tough play for the infielder. Ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Now the A’s designated hitter, Jacob Wilson. He’s 0 for one. And that’s a base hit. And that keeps the inning alive. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. [Applause] And that one almost got him. Late swing fouled to the left. Wilson off of first with two away. A little out front there as he swings through it. Oh, and he hit him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. First and second, two outs. And the batter will be the shorts stop. Daryl Hern hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And it stays there. Wilson headed for the plate. He scores to tie it up for round third headed for the plate. The throw is offline and he’s in to score. They’ve got the lead 65. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So, runner at second, two down. Here’s the catcher, Willie MacGyver. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. That one outside and it’s one and0. Runner at second. Two down here in the last half of the third. [Applause] Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Hunter Brown up and loosening in the pen. Valdez also getting ready [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] on the ground right side. Walker steps on the bag. Inning over and it could have been worse, but they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s tightened up a bit at 65. Now you’re dialed into the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Jake Meyers. Let’s go, baby. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, these Astros doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. Not only have they already put up a bunch of runs on the board, but they’ve also made the starter work really hard out there. Gets it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting right fielder Zack Cole digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Zack Cole. He drove in two with a single his first time up. They’ll be turning to their bullpin sooner than they had hoped. And another ball. A’s leading by a run. Fouled off. He was late. Got one fouled off. Two and two. Bows it back with two strikes. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. And there’s a ball. Swings and misses. dropped him out. Kind of a weird pitch and a weird swing on that strike out. Just a slider that caught a lot of the plate. I’d say very hitable location, but in the box, I think he just gave up on it way too early and by the time he realized it was dropping into the zone, he just fires off a really poor swing. Mauricio Dubon up next for the Astros that finds the mark on the inside corner. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. The Athletics have some bullpen action. JT Gin, the hardthrowing righty, is up and loosening. Number 49, warming up as well. Two outs. So a foul ball makes it one and two. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Right through there. Got him. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Astros go down one, two, three. Still a tight ball game. It’s 6-5. [Applause] Ready to go. Bottom four. And here is Max Schum. Second base. Max Schuman. And that misses. And that’s ball one. You know, these A’s putting together some really good at bats in this game. And there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. You just can’t average two runs for any without a complete team effort from the lineup. Everyone’s been doing their job setting up the next hitter and taking care of their own business at the plate. On the ground right side, the throw to first, one out in the bottom of the fourth. Up next for the A’s, center fielder. So the batting order turns over. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. One for two. Come on. And that’s ripped into left. Base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Now batting third base back in trouble. Boo. And it’s just been like this for him most of the game. They’ve been all over him since his first pitch. And I think he’s got a very short leash right now. Really needs to lock it down here. Runner on at first with one gone. Now the number two hitter Brent Rooker for two in this one. Popped up foul territory behind the plate. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, makes the catch for the out. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. He’s already homered in this game. [Applause] Up the middle and it’s through for a hit. And now to a board. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Now, here is Tyler Soderstrom. First pitch just misses and a base hit right coming home. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s seven to five. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he made it out front for the line drive. Manager out of the dugout now. And he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Jason Alexander gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for Hunter Brown taking over on the mound. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Next up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. And that’s off the outside edge. One and0. The A’s looking to add another. [Applause] this to third. Paradus. They take the force out. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and it’s 75. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. JT Gin. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. So, the lineup flips over. Here’s the Astros leadoff man. Jose Alt [Music] [Applause] check swing and that’s a ball. Well, these Astros really impressing me with the quality of their at bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. That one way inside. rips that one to right. Cortez makes the catch. One up, one down. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it, but sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. Looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. And here comes Carlos Koreah. [Applause] Ball one there. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire. and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. [Music] [Applause] That’s down and in. One strike. swing and a miss as he was out front. The Stros trailing by two and we’re in the top of the fifth. Just misses. Three and two now. Really good take especially with two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] hit weakly on the ground. Hernese tosses to first. So they get the out after a long battle at the plate. Now batting third base. So, two down now and here is Isak Paredus. [Applause] Pitch in the dirt. Ball one. And that one clips the corner. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field and that’ll do it. [Applause] And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the right fielder Carlos Cortez. Cortez outside ball one. You know, these athletics doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. Only two strikeouts so far and obviously they’ve been able to pick up plenty of hits. So, it’s been an impressive one. Pauls it in for the out and you know that strikeout total, only two so far really tells you they’re not just running into good luck and getting hits to fall. They’re earning those knocks. swing and a ball lined out towards center. Brings it in. Two down. As good as he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand. You cannot hang a breaking ball right there. Lucky it stay in the ballpark. Two outs. Space is empty. And now the catcher comes up to hit. Willie MacGyver. First pitch misses. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. And one, two, three go the A’s. They’re still up 75. And welcome back to the ballpark. Digging in, Jesus Sanchez for the Astros, left fielder, Jesus Sanchez. Again, back to work. Pitch misses. And it’s one and0. Movement in the bullpen. Mason Barnett appears to be getting ready. And I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. McGuff getting loose as well. Hit hard. Base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Now batting first baseman Christian Walker. Christian Walker now at the plate. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. [Applause] swing and a tapper that rolls foul with the tying run at the plate and we’re the top half of the six and a two-1 hammered but foul with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. The two-2 swung on, belted and it’s into the gap. Runner around third on his way to the plate. He’ll score. Big RBI for him right there. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. At the plate is the Astros catcher. Yiner Diaz delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there. That’s long gone. So, he blasts one out the other way. Home run number 20 on the year and they lead it. It’s 8-7. His bat looks like it’s in the zone for such a long time and that gives him the ability to get barrel on it and hit the ball out to any part of the park. manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. JT Gin will depart and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching number 49 into the game coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Jake Meyers up next for the Astros. [Applause] [Music] Fast is outside. [Applause] And a bunt towards third. And that goes foul. [Applause] Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know, it’s going to finish well off the plate. [Applause] And it’s even up [Applause] That one just misses. [Music] Honest. It’s a strike out. Stepping in, Zack Cole. And that’s through there for a strike. [Applause] One down. Base is empty. Ground ball right side and it goes just foul. [Applause] liner and this could be trouble now. He’ll turn it for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. One out, runner at second. And now the shorts stop, Mauricio Dubon, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Just missed. One-run game. One out, one on. Check. Swing. Called strike. [Applause] And a big swing and a miss. Swaging a ball hit out towards left center field and that’ll fall for a base hit. The run comes in to score from second and it’s an RBI single. It’s 97. He found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got him to chase on the two strike count, but he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. Jose Altuve up to hit here. Swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Headed for the plate. He’ll score easily and they put up the stop sign at second. Stringing them together. That’s three hits in a row. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now here’s the Astros designated hitter, Carlos Koreah. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was late that time. [Applause] [Applause] swings through that one for strike two. That misses the zone and the count is one and two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Base hit left center field. Brown’s third headed for the plate. The throws offline. He’s saved. It’s 11 to seven. Well, he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes. I think he choked up a little bit. Maybe spread out, but he got the job done right there. manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Number 49 won’t go any further. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching. So a new pitcher on the mound for the A’s, Elvis Alvarado. Well, he’s a big time strike out guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. [Applause] One down. Isach Paredus up next for the Astros. 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Slider right there. Alvarado 26 years old. They got him off of waiverss earlier this season. Koreah over at first with one away. That one outside and that is ball one. Doubled up on the slider away to Seamer here. Let’s watch and see. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Kareah on his horse and coming home. He will score. They are really feeding off each other. That’s five hits in a row. Got a good pitch to drive. Stayed short with his bat path to the ball and caught it out front and he stayed long in his follow through. That’s how you split the gap. And that’s pretty much a double every time. One out, runner at second. At the plate, Jesus Sanchez. one for three. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. [Applause] Just missed. [Applause] And another ball in for a strike. Three and one. And ball four, two aboard. Now batting the first base, Christian. First and second, one out. And here’s the first baseman, Christian Walker. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Runners at first and second with one gone. The one-1 is fouled off [Applause] up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time. And they end up with two in scoring position after the out at first base. And here’s the catcher Yiner D. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Slashes this one and it could be trouble. One run across, another scores. Two runs in on the play. It’s 14-7 and he’s safe at second with a two-run double. and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. Man at second here with two away. So, next up for Houston, Jake Meyers 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. Outside low, ball one. [Applause] man on second. Two down. Foul ball. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. And that’s down and away. [Applause] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Music] Right side, Cortez. And that is that. But they put a nine spot up on the board here to open up a big lead. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. Astros leaded 14-7. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now it’s the second base, Max Schum. Max Schuman just missed. This one chopped up the middle. Dubond to first and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Now batting the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler getting ready to hit. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. The Astros up big in this one here in the bottom of the sixth. Sliced hard but fouled. There’s the strike [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air. Sanchez snags it and they’re two down. Now batting third baseman Brent Rooker. Two down, base is empty. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker 0 for three in this one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. [Applause] Swing and a foul out of play. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. And we’re back. New inning getting started. And stepping in for the Astros, Zack Cole. Let’s go. Late on that fast ball. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. [Music] Foul ball still 0 and two. Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him. [Applause] Now batting and next to hit for Houston, Mauricio Dubon. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands and here it comes. That one fouled off. and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him. Hugan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle, you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Altuve the next to hit takes ball one. Let’s go to baby. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. [Applause] Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. [Music] Bottom of the inning. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. First baseman, Nick Curts. And the right hitter back to work. Check swing called strike. Next pitch misses. One ball, one strike. Way high. [Applause] Ground ball left side. Tear ball. clearly seeing the ball very well in this one. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Rip to right. Cole calls it in and there’s one away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself It’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. And now the DH Jacob Wilson at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. 01’s the count. Foul ball there. Man at first, one away. Let’s go to baby. Let’s go. That one the other way. And there’s a hit. Throw into third and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Well, that’s one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some jabs from your teammates when you get back to the dugout. Totally tied up with that inside pitch. Got to it late in deep in the zone, but he got the bat on plane enough to fight it off the other way. And now the right fielder, Carlos Cortez. First pitch and he just misses. And another balllet [Applause] highfly ball out to center field. Meyers and he makes the catch. Runner tagging from third. He’s in on the sack fly and now it’s 14- eight. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. Now that there’s the short stop at the plate. Daryl Hern. [Applause] That one’s in there. That’s strike one. [Applause] And strike two. Two outs. The shorts stop takes the ball. [Applause] And a good eye there. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Still two and two after the foul ball. Wilson the runner at first with two gone. And that’s downstairs and outside. 3-2, two out, runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. [Applause] Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Hit in the air. right field and that ends the inning. They get a run on two hits, no errors, and a man left. We look ahead to inning number eight. The Astros on top, 14-8. Now, PJ, welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the Mason Barnett. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for the stats obviously regardless of the score. Now it’s the DH Carlos Koreah. Fast for a strike. Next pitch is outside. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off. Line drive. still able to come through behind in the count right there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now here is Isach Paradis. That’s in there. That’s strike one. drilled out towards left center field. Butler sizes this one up. One down. [Applause] Now batting left fielder Jesus Sanchez. So, a man aboard and here now is the Astros cleanup hitter, Jesus Sanchez. And that’s a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Scott McGuff, the young right-hander, up and throwing. Basso getting cranked up as well. The Stros up big in this one. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Double play ball to second. There’s one double play. And that’ll do it for the end. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Last half of the eighth coming up. Houston leads this one 14-8. Ready for the bottom of the eighth. Here’s the catcher, Willie McGyver. Willie Macyver. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. Just off the outside edge and it’s two and one. That one missed. Swing and a highf fly ball deep left field. That one’s back there. gone. His fourth home run of the season and they cut into the deficit. It’s 149. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Hunter Brown departs and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. [Applause] Here’s a new pitcher from the pen, Craig Kimell. and he’s got a nice lead to work with. So, he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Craig Kimrell. There you go. Next up for the A’s, Max Schuman. [Applause] Pitch is in the dirt and that’s ball one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. [Applause] The 1-1 is cut on and missed and a pitch upstairs. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Applause] [Music] swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field and it drops in. Well, those kind of lucky soft hits will always make you smile. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Now, let’s see if they can string something together, make it a little more interesting. And now Lawrence Butler down the inside corner for a strike. [Applause] and ball one. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. [Applause] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] That one missing inside. [Applause] [Applause] swing and a miss. Struck him out. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And now here is Brent Rooker. [Applause] And first off is fouled off. Schuman leads off first with one away. [Applause] Liner snagged at first. Applies the tag and they get two. Double play. One in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source. Ninth inning coming up. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We go to the ninth. Leading off Christian Walker Barnett in his rookie season, 24 years old and he was a third round pick in 2022. Right through there for a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Number 58 appears to be getting loose. Sterner also getting ready. [Applause] Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Pitch misses. Now one and two. [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. And he chases that one. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Now Betty Geria the next to hit known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Smoked on the ground to second. Over to first. Two up, two down. Now batting centerfielder Jake Meyers. [Music] Two outs. Space is empty. Next to hit, Jake Meyers [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Hold on one [Music] swing and a miss as he was late. Just threw that fast ball by him, elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. And these guys really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. And that one ripped to left. Sodestro makes the play. And that is that. Three up, three down for him there. Heard of the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. Astros leaded 14-9. Now pitching for So a new pitcher out of the bullpen for the Astros, Brian King. and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think that’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. Now it’s going to be Nick Curt. No matter what you’re playing this kind of rival to take your game to another level. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. [Applause] And that’s off the inside edge. And one and one. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] That one off the mark. And the count is even. Two and two. [Applause] Got him. Rusty Valentine rings him up. Well, big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed. It’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed. They tried to check the swing, just couldn’t do it. Sodro in the box here. lets that one go for a ball. [Applause] Swing and a miss. And the count even at one. [Applause] Brown ball to the right side. Walker takes it to the bag. Two up, two down. Now batting designated hitter Jacob Wilson. The Athletics down to their last out and now Jacob Wilson [Applause] right through there for a strike. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. just off the outside edge. This one in the air right field and what a play ball game. What an exciting finish to this game. An amazing play right there. It’s hard for the fans to go home. They want more. They’re not ready to leave and head to their cars, but an outstanding job to keep entertaining all the way to the end. 14-9 at the end of this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
