Fish for Breakfast | Should #Cowboys Sign ‘The Jerk’?

Should the Dallas Cowboys kneejerk and sign the jerk? I’m a professional sports writer. I’m Mike Fischer, your trusty and trusted reporter. This is the fishbowl. That is the star. back to work today as we enjoy breakfast at Fishes and contemplate uh the latest name who’s on the street on the couch and uh open for business. If the Cowboys are open for business, you you probably know him, surely you know him from um his good days and then his bad days with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Dallas Cowboys have a wobbly secondary to say the least. Uh they have put forth so far some of the worst secondary numbers in all the NFL. Worst pass defensive numbers, too, cuz we can’t just blame the guys in the secondary. It’s about the pass rush, too. But Dallas has allowed the most passing yards, 900. The most yards per completion, 9.8. The second most passing touchdowns, seven. And the second most, not the most, the second most explosive plays over 20 yards, 13 through three weeks. That’s quite a bonanza. Matt Rafloose and Brian Shottnimer. Something needs to change. Uh Shotti said to start this week, yes, we are going to make changes um simplify things among other things. Not firing the defensive coordinator at this point. Certainly a factor is Jeron Bland. He’s been inactive in weeks two and three. will try to play Sunday night against the visiting Packers. Uh the promising rookie Shannon Rell remains out. He might be back in a couple weeks. Former AllPro Trayvon Diggs is I don’t know. So So, but he’s playing with a dinged up knee and a dinged up shoulder and all the rest. The Cowboys have the cap space to do almost anything they want to here. Uh $31 million in cap space, second most in the NFL. And there’s Kendall Fuller and Asante Samuel and Stefan Gilmore and Justin Simmons and other secondary guys out there sitting on the couch. But now here comes the safety CJ Gardner Johnson. Remember him? He’s a jerk. Really? Uh but he’s a name guy. He was released by the Texans after the team’s 0 and3 start this year. Former Super Bowl champion, 27. Played for the Cowboys rival Eagles last year. won a Super Bowl, was traded to March, uh, traded in March, and immediately started griping about everything about being traded, about Houston system, about Vic Fangio, about Houston, and he hadn’t stopped. Mouthy griping. Signed a three-year, $27 million contract. How bad was it in Houston? They’re they’re eating a fortune to say goodbye to him. So, here come all the stories from the Cowboys fanboy sits. Cowboys must sign CJ GJ. Let’s tap the brakes a little bit here as we contemplate what the Cowboys are going to do Sunday against Michael Parsons as the visiting Packers. If if you’re an IWatch film guy, uh, and you’ve watched his work in Houston, he doesn’t look very good. And then there’s the fingerpointing and the freelancing and all the all the stuff we’re talking about that’s wrong with the Dallas secondary. He’s guilty of all that. He is also uh by reputation not a character guy. Don’t know if I want to go so far as to say say he’s a bad guy, a bad apple. That might be a little much. But um the locker room allegations chase him around and they spell trouble. Uh he can be a hotthead. He can badmouth teammates. He can make incendiary comments about all the people around him. Word from the Houston locker room is that he didn’t like his role. Uh that he created friction with teammates and coaches because among other things he wanted to blitz more. Uh that he’s guilty of fingerpointing. This isn’t the first time. And that he doesn’t take the blame for his own goofups. And this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that either. Now, let’s go to Dallas. You can argue that in terms of his natural skills at this point in his career, he’s got more than Donovan Wilson. Uh, and he might be right there with Malik Hooker. Hooker, by the way, has done good work according to the advanced stat people. Uh, good work in the run game. Coverage grade is terrible. He’s allowed a perfect passer rating against him per PFF. He ranks 96th out of the safeties in coverage and he leads the league in QBR allowed metric. Wilson who as we know he should be a box safety if you if if that’s all you had to ask of him there wouldn’t be some of these problems. He’s performed poorly according to analytics. His coverage grade is 51. He ranks 9. So, the Cowboys have the number 91 and 96 safeties out of 123 of them graded. Uh, but CJ, he’s had a rough start. Hasn’t did anything right either. Um, he does have pedigree in terms of being a playmaker. He’s totaled six interceptions in each of the last two seasons in which he played uh at least 12 games, 22 and 24. If he likes blitzing, he’s not going to like it here because that’s not what we do around here. uh if he wants to think that he gets to be the voice, that’s not going to work here either. Um miscommunication, Ibra uh will say and Shot Namer has said bad communication, miscommunication has been the problem in this Dallas secondary. Well, he CJ’s doesn’t he’s not good at that. He communicates, but not like that. He flaps his gums. Um, my view, he’s a short-tempered, non-character guy who the scouting department should eyeball the same way the scouting department should take a look at all every potential guy. But if the Cowboys really look at CJ Gardner Johnson as a serious possibility, they should also quit asking you to take them seriously when they make their promise about the importance of culture and leadership and character. Because CJ DJ is kind of a jerk. Fish out.
