Chiefs Found a NEW Weapon for Patrick Mahomes vs. the Giants

The Kansas City Chiefs avoided going into total crisis mode with a win over the New York Giants. And on that note, Seth, I I don’t I don’t know if you should be talking about a midlife crisis. You’re wearing a nice shirt. It’s got a pattern. You’ve got a haircut that your wife didn’t give you. I mean, I’m I don’t know. I’m feeling like I got to shape up a little bit. I feel like I’m bringing the swag of this show down a little right now. Look, Josh, there comes a time in a man’s life when he turns 40 usually where he starts to realize that, you know, maybe maybe it’s time to you’ve put on a few pounds. You maybe have been but just buzz cutting your hair to save yourself 20 bucks every two months for, you know, 18 years. When your wife looks at you, she you can see her attempting to find that spark and it slowly turns into disappointment the longer she looks at you. And uh so I it’s been a uh it’s been a it’s been an experience for me these last few months. I’m uh and you know I actually some people in the comments said like two different people said some nice things to me last week. I believe someone said I’m looking which I enjoyed as a word and uh you know what I got as high as 238 pounds. We’re now down to hovering between 206 and 210. So I’m starting my midlife crisis. I’m super excited about it. I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. But I just started thinking to myself, with the light slowly fading from Jazz’s eyes every time she looks at me, I decided that it’s time to do something with myself, with my look, with my personality, basically everything that exists about me. And I’m going to do something that I haven’t done for 18 years. Try Imagine [Applause] my concern that I just found out that’s not supposed to happen till you turn 40. Welcome to Only Weird Games. Josh Brisco, Seth Kaiser with you as Nate Taylor’s on his way back from the Big Apple or the big stadium just outside the Big Apple. Look, the Chiefs went on the road against the New York Giants. That’s something they had never done before. They had lost to the Giants on the road in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, as the 2010s, and now the streak is over. They’re one and two. I I mentioned yesterday on everything else with Joshua Brisco, available wherever you get your podcast or live on KCSN’s YouTube channel, that we’re going to end up in Ravens mode very, very quickly this week because that game is enormous. But I I do want to take the time to appreciate one, the Chiefs did win a football game, and two, the Ravens are in pretty much the same spot right now as a team that has two losses against two good football teams and one win over not a very good football team. That’s the matchup of the week this weekend. It’s It’s going to be wild. But we’re going to we’re going to talk about the Giants today. Yes, I am excited to talk about the Ravens because it’s so interesting the difference between when your offense is struggling versus your defense is struggling and you have a different level of expectation. The vibes that you get leaguewide because the Chiefs have lost to a pair of undefeated teams. They were in both games, much more so in the Eagles game than the the Chargers game. They when when Jones, we’ve talked about this last week, when Jones managed to get that inside move, I figured he’d sack Herbert and I was like, “Oh, well, I’m going to be somewhat upset, but you know, we’ll figure it out.” Um, but they that’s not what happened. Of course, they were in those games more so, I dare say, than the Ravens were really in that game at the end there against the Lions. Just saying. I’m just saying. So, the vibes are totally different the way the two teams are talked about. And I get it, right? The Chiefs are coming off a Super Bowl blowout loss. Um, you know, the Ravens obviously didn’t get blown out in the Super Bowl um because, you know, they didn’t make it. But that that it’s so interesting the way teams are talked about. Giants game, it depends on where you want to start because the first half I what what is the line as as the kids say? I think it’s part of, you know, the midlife crisis. I’ve got to I’m going to have to get more up to date on this and I’m really I’m really excited. Oh man, I hope this is not Jazz texting me watching from the Philippines. I was gonna ask. I heard the text coming up and I was gonna say, Seth, don’t look. Don’t look. I don’t want to know. Nope. Uh, honey, if that’s you texting, uh, respect the bit. Anyway, that’s sure to help. So, I’m so nervous right now. So, it’s it’s 6:00 a.m. there. That’s not her. She’s asleep, right? Um, no. Right now, it’s uh, man, they’re like 12 hours. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s hard to say. She’s been in the Philippines, you said, right? Is that super good? Visiting some good friends. Taking 5:49 a.m. in the Philippines, according to Google right now. You’re okay. Good lord. Unless she’s up early blowing up your phone. She was texting me earlier. Um. Whoa. Really? Oh, no. Uh, well, you know, jet lag. It hits. So, they had us in the first half. I’m not going to lie. It was the And by they, I mean the Chiefs. Yes. because they were determined to do everything in their power as the defense was kind of like fellas guys guys remember last week against the Eagles when we did the same thing oh you’re going to do this against a much worse team really interesting um so I don’t know how you want to talk about it but I will just say the defense mostly was doing a good job overall and and throughout the game did a good job against a pretty mediocre offense that lit up the Cowboys, but the Cowboys are terrible. Yep. Um they the Cowboys could really use a game-changing elite pass rusher, but were you going to find one of those? Yeah. Yeah. Like I mean, how you ever going to Yeah. One one could never. Um so the offense looked so again, not just bad, but disjointed and and just completely out of sorts. Look, Isaiah Pacheco, I I’m going to become this guy that’s constantly dogging a guy who’s clearly a good teammate, clearly has is working his tail off, is clearly in his head a little bit, and you can’t tell me the guy’s not in his head a little bit. Because let me just tell you, if you are blaming and you can blame him partly, but if you’re blaming like if you’re going to do like 51% versus 49% Patrick Mahomes for those ground balls to Isaiah Pacheco, those backward passes, let me tell you, there’s nothing in Patrick Mahomes’s NFL experience or even collegiate experiment experience that tells him to expect Isaiah Pacheco to pull a J.R. Smith, was it? and just turned towards the wrong end zone after missing badly on a chip. And then on the other one, he took out his left tackle on his way to the chip. Those two plays, which by like if you’re going by yards per play and trying to figure out who did, you know, how the Chiefs offense did. And when you lose 22 yards on two plays, that’s that’s rough. There’s no reason for Mahomes to expect Pacheco to be where he was. And now what you can say is, well, I mean, you he’s got to see it. I honestly think Mahomes started to throw it and realized what was going on and it was that’s what the checkown’s for. That’s what the I I’ll say I’m not an NFL quarterback and I am not grinding film like even Seth is here, much less like Patrick Mahomes is. But the checkown is there so you can just get the ball out to a guy who you know where he’s going to be. Like you got to know what spot you’re going to be in. Absolutely. And uh B Megs asked a great question. So why did Pat throw either of those balls at PCO? Honestly, it’s it’s it’s a split-second boom boom decision. You got to remember with a check down to your left like that after that sort of um after that sort of chip, you’re throwing to a spot and you are expecting and it only happens because there’s pressure, right? The play is done, the coverage is there or there’s pressure in your face. So, you got to get that ball out immediately. And I think the the first time he I the first time he maybe would have had a little more time, but the pressure was coming. The second time he looked shocked as the ball was even being released. And I I got to tell you that is one of those like I it looked like he was trying to almost pull the throw and it was just too late. The fact that he managed to knock that ball and again not a great play for Mahomes and I think that’s what BMGs is getting at in terms of like well why throw that? It’s a checkdown. They’re supposed to just be right there and it is a microscond decision. Doesn’t negate him entirely. It does not. And Mahomes had a few other plays that you know he’d like to have back. Him and Travis are still back and forth trying to get on the same page with some stuff. uh etc. But the fact that he got that ball out was maybe and it was early in the game, but that helped keep things from falling apart completely. And man, that is that is one of the like if he’s if they somehow turn this around and have a really good season. That’ll be a play that they show where they’re like, “Good lord, give this man the MVP. He’s doing everything even when he’s not playing his best.” So, I mean, but that play was like a microcosm into how bad things looked in that first half. Penalties. Um, Simmons had a penalty that wiped out a big game. Taylor killed a third down conversion that led them to trying to kick a field goal. It was just everything that could frustrate Chiefs fans. everything that has been I’m someone I often make the mistake of looking at individual events and viewing them as symptomatic as a bigger issue which by the way uh fellas not great not a good thing to do because not everything is symptomatic of a bigger issue sometimes stuff just happens but for Chiefs fans all the bigger issues that have been bothering us they all came in the second quarter it was like everywhere it was frustrating guys couldn’t separate from Kelsey looked off him. Andy Reid actually like shouted and chestbumped Kelsey. The I can’t even imagine what you have to do to get Andy to get come down on you that hard. So that the whole thing was as frustrated as I’ve been as a Chiefs fan in the Patrick Mahomes era was in that second quarter. you you named most of them, but I have a whole list, so I’m going to rattle through them also because I think interestingly it’s what Andy Reid like almost opened with in his opening statement at the at his postgame presser. He said that the second quarter was hard to watch. And he’s right and he was maybe even generous. Here’s what here’s what I wrote. I think I may still end up missing a play or two, but just these are things that happened in that second quarter. The first lateral debacle, the Pacheco spiked to Kingsley. The Mahomes 14yard scramble on third and 12 undone by the Jawan Taylor illegal formation. A three pass sequence that lost two yards and then set Harrison Butler up for a 40-y old yard field goal that he missed. An eightplay 70ard Giants touchdown drive that was basically all run plays and penalties including third and nine. An incompletion getting the ball back. Nope. George Caroftus hits Russell Wilson late. Free first down. the second lateral fumble where A PCO is running towards the wrong end zone and then the game- saving tackle from Mahomes. It’s 136 Giants or guess maybe 126 Giants if Mahomes doesn’t make that tackle and get the ball right back. Not just the tackle, the ball. A enormous enormous swing that’s not going to get enough credit. Um no Williams face mask penalty which moved the Giants to the 26. Then you have Jaylen Watson’s pick that just saves that and erases that from mattering. Thank you, Jaylen Watson. The should be deep ball Thornton touchdown that was almost a pick. The Guju wideopen first down drop. A near pick from Brian Burns jumping up and batting the pass down at the 20 and it just hit him in the chest and he landed and got hurt. And then third and 10, illegal contact gives the Chiefs a first down and you get a 52 yard DPI on Hollywood that teleports them into field goal range. It was a disastrous quarter with a great play from Jaylen Watson and getting bailed out by a couple of Giants penalties. It it I I want let’s start I wanted to start in here because we’re just going to go a little bit chronological that way because the whiplash at the start of the second half could not have been much more extreme. But that was a disaster and it’s not one that you can survive against the Ravens that way. Like I you tell me if you if you disagree with any of this, Seth, but one of my main takes at this point is that I don’t think the Chiefs Some of the guys did and the secondary is legit, but I don’t think the Chiefs played significantly better against the Giants than they did against the Chargers or the Eagles. They just played a worse team and they almost beat the Chargers and Eagles. They they were on the line of the Chargers and Eagles. Those are both close one-possession games where one mistake flips it. They made some of those same mistakes against the Giants. They just got it back and the Giants couldn’t capitalize on them. You know, the the defense really struggled a lot more against the Chargers. Yes. But I mean, overall, I I would agree. The secondary in particular, they didn’t run the ball that much. Right. Right. Right. And they and they really I mean, they just there were a lot of blown coverages. Hicks and Cook playing as well as they’ve been playing the last couple weeks is something I might be able to write about this week. I kind of want to see what happens against Baltimore if I’m being honest. But Cook and Hicks both playing as much better as they’ve been playing has been like, “Oh, okay.” Uh, no. Williams the quarterback three, but well, I know we’re going to get into that. All those And you mentioned Buter missing again, right? Mhm. And then I I just mentioned I’m officially on Buter watch here. Look, here’s the deal. He came into this season, I think, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. So, I’m going to assume he’s going to get this together. The man has made literally probably dozens of clutch kicks at this point. Fair enough. But that’s a lot of misses through three games. And yeah, and a dinkin. I like that. That sounds fun. But it Man, Jazz has been gone for a while, huh? But so the the was really funny. Um that that threw me off. So, it’s at least worth considering because one of the reasons the Chiefs have won a lot of games and a lot of important games is those hidden points or hidden yards in special teams, in close games in the NFL, a 10- yard advantage, a kicker that is automatic with the game on the line. Um, all this stuff is it it just matters. So I but that’s one thing again. It’s like certain things like so like Mahomes is still working through his deep ball accuracy issues. You know Bucker’s no Mahomes but he is the most accurate kicker in league history. He’s made a ton of Okay, fine. I’ll I’ll wait it out. We’ll see. But it’s at least keeping an eye on. So that I mean it was another thing that’s just everything was frustrating. And I agree they made a lot of these same mistakes against their first two opponents. They just couldn’t recover as well. And that kind of stuff is not going to cut it against Baltimore. And so many of the things when you go back and rewatch, do you remember the um series that I started like I think it was in 2021 called self-inflicted? I think we’ve talked about it before. Yes. I tweeted out a screenshot of a bunch of them last week because I figured it’s about time for that to resurrect pretty soon. And that’s the exact issue that we’re having here. And and it’s not just self-inflicted stuff. There’s other things that are frustrating, but like again, an illegal formation penalty that kills a third down conversion that knocks you back, you know, 10 yards, and then they do just kind of this give up, let’s get into an easier field goal range that kills a promising drive. When you look at the Chiefs drives, you actually, you know, their first two drives, they got 36 yards, 51 yards, 25 yards. Those first three drives, they caught a few first downs, were moving the ball. Then their next one was negative nine yards. But these self-inflicted wounds as they’re nearing the 50 or a little past it are hurting them and some of it is like look some of it is Josh Simmons is playing one of the best edge rushers he’s going to play this year. Burns beat him with a really nice move and he held in with a hold that wouldn’t always get called but against a superstar probably will be. Okay, that happens kid. Uh Jawan Taylor um had I been Andy Reid I might have sat him down in the second half. I mean, you’re actively killing important plays. Here’s one thing I would say because people are talking about like um undisiplined football. That’s what we largely were seeing in the first half. And I think that’s where it becomes so frustrating is we’re three games in and I look, I understand Rice being suspended is a bummer. I understand Worthy being hurt right away is a bummer. They had huge plans for him. Um, but some of the stuff that was going on the first half, that’s not stuff that you just fix with more talent on the field because guys got to be lined up in the right places. Guys got to be executing stuff and you know some of the problems at running back. Worthy and Rice don’t fix that. like you have to figure something out because Pacheco who had a few nice runs on well blocked plays but I mean he made some unbelievable mistakes and and Hunt continues to have no juice whatsoever. He can run straight ahead. He can follow his blocks. I get it. But th those were all things like we were watching all of our nightmares come to life and I was like holy crap. I think they might lose this game. That was that was the feeling at halftime. It was extremely extremely uncomfortable. And then the second half came out, a lot of things were different. We’ll see how many of those uh make it over to next week against Baltimore as well. But we’ll take our own little uh well, it’s like a we’re more of a period breaker. This first period, we got to take two. So we’ll we’ll take our first time out here. Click the link in the description to hear how Throttlet can help you. All right, Seth. So, a funny thing happened at the beginning of the second half after all of those issues in the second quarter. On the first drive of the second half, Patrick Mahomes went five for five for 45 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Pacheco had five carries for 24 yards, just under five yards per carry. And they had no penalties on that drive. Uh, two Bashard Smith jet motions, one handoff to him, one just doing a little bit of window dressing, which seems like a good role for him on the field. What What happened? what happened at the start of the second half and how how much how much faith are you willing to put into that being being legitimate because that version of the offense that was fun for a minute? Yes. One of the things that I’m working on right now is looking at your handwriting. No, that ship has sailed. I Jazz once told me that it’s childlike and I’m choosing to believe that she meant that as a compliment. Yeah, like childlike wonder. Yeah, that is kind of how she said it, too. It was more like oh it’s childlike. It wasn’t like oh it’s childlike. So so um what I was right one the things that I was looking at is what was working in the second half that it was just generally what what was working and what are things that maybe could be sustainable and there were a couple things there. They they had a nice under center run um with Pacheco using some jet sweep action with Bashard Smith that you mentioned. Um, I know they actually used that jet sweep motion with or action with uh Brashard Smith once, gained like five yards. Um, I know Nick Jacobs tweeted out that if he’d done a better job following his blocks, there’s a bigger play to make there. I would really like to see what he means by that cuz I was looking, I was like, I I don’t feel like there was more space, but maybe. Um, but them getting the ball in Smith’s hands, that’s nice to see. Um, utilizing that jet sweep action that they used to utilize constantly to help set up their run game. And I don’t know if they just haven’t been as comfortable with it without Hardman on the field or what, but that’s gone away a little bit the last couple years seeing that um spreading uh utilizing spread formation. I think they uh they had one running back on the field. I think it was uh Kareem Hunt, but they, you know, they had him line up on the boundary. They spread everyone out to isolate, make it harder for them to disguise coverage. And so then they kind of isolated Kelsey one-on-one, one on a really nice whip route. um he is looking solid with his routes and stuff this year. So that’s something they did that worked. Um one thing they did on that drive and their fourth quarter touchdown drive, they started having Hollywood Brown run some intermediate inbreaking and outbreaking routes. Oftent times this year I felt like a few times we’ve seen um Brown utilized similarly to how Worthy would be utilized. And I just Hollywood Brown is fast. He looks explosive out there, but I don’t think he looks as fast as like his college 40 time and he’s been in the league a while. Um I think he’s put he’s gained a little weight. He’s like Taekquon Thornton. I don’t think Thornton would run like a 429 or whatever he did either because he probably weighs like 195 instead of 185. But utilizing Brown on inb breaking intermediate routes. Um whether you’re talking slants or digs or some comebacks, things like that. That’s where you can win with him and they utilized him in that way several times on both drives and that was really nice to see some of those longer developing crossers. He actually got open on Thornton’s big third down conversion that Thornton just stole the ball from Brown. Um, I think that would have been complete to Brown either way. Mahomes could have put it a little more in front of him, but I Mahomes at times he feels like he’s worried about overthrowing stuff right now. It’s just something to keep in the back of your head. Watch watch him under throw. He did on the shot play in on third down in the late fourth quarter, too, which to be fair was partly an arm punt, too. It’s like, hey, if they pick this off, we don’t care that much. Um, but he under threw it a little and it’s just I don’t think he um I I don’t know. It’s just something to keep an eye on because he’s overthrown a few times, too. So utilizing Brown that way I think helps. And then they’re going deep to Thornton. And so there’s things they can do here in terms of that. Like some of that stuff feels repeatable to me. Run the ball from under center with some jet sweep action. Um utilize that with some boot concepts. Marry those together. Take some deep shots to Thornton. Utilize uh Brown primarily as an intermediate weapon on inbreakers and outreakers. Um get Bashard Smith the ball more. you know, every game he’s getting a little more playing time and seeing the ball a little bit more. He clearly has he had an eight- yard gain. I’m I’m writing about this right now in the Chief North newsletter that he had an 8- yard gain where he just outran the defense. He outran the angle. They don’t have anyone else that can do that. So, those things, it feels like you can build maybe not the whole plane out of that stuff, but you can do more of it. And as they continue to figure out who can do what, I think that’s going to be a big deal. Not running, uh, thanks Nate dog. Not running a bubble screen to your 36-y old tight end. Um, not doing things the way they’ve done things the last couple years. You know, if I’m Andy, it’s like, okay, what did we do last year? What’s the opposite of that? Have we tried that? And so th those are all things that I think you can start to utilize. Um, you can use Juju Spester on some of that shallow stuff. Like they you you’ve got someone that can win at every level. Brown can win intermediate. Juju can win a little bit shallow and he’s had juice after the catch this year. Like they need to stop trying to utilize Hollywood for the Rasheed Rice. Xavier Worthy stuff shallow because he’s not a tackle breaker and he’s not Worthy is not a tackle breaker either, but he’s so freakishly fast that he can grab yards. Use Guju for that stuff. He He breaks more tackles. He’s just got a little more juice after the catch. So, they seem like they could start finding who should be doing what, but I don’t know. And those those are the things that they ought to be doing more of. I just don’t know if they’re going to do it. I’ve lost a lot of I I think it’ll be interesting to see the game plan against Baltimore because Reed usually picks about game four and a big opponent to start really unfolding some stuff. Exactly what I was just about to say. is just if that’s going to happen, now’s the time. There there’s not another like couple of weeks to wait because when Roshi Rice comes back, it’ll change again, right? And maybe if if Xavier Worthy’s back for the the Ravens game, which I don’t we don’t know what his exact timeline is and we don’t know what he’s going to look like when he’s back. So, big if there, but but week seven, the offense is going to look different than it did weeks one through six. We know that. I don’t blame him for not having, you know, a a no Xavier worthy plan for week one, but for week two, it was like, hey, can you make it look a little bit better knowing that you’re short-handed, and it didn’t really, and now it’s against the Giants. Can you just can you lean into any of these little offspe pitches that might work for you? And maybe they did a little bit there by your eye. I’m excited to read this piece. And we’ll talk more about Taekquin Thornton in a minute. Leaning into what he’s been able to do has been a great thing. But now the question is, hey, this is this is a really good team and a game that you really want to win. I I don’t think need is quite the right word, but in a way, both of these teams need to win this game. And I think they’ll both probably make the playoffs either way, but this is the time to break glass and get a little bit weird with whatever it is that that how whatever weird little rinky dink play that you think you can steal six points on. I want to see one of those this week. Whenever you have a change to the offense, a a gear shift that you can make, I want to see that against the Ravens because there’s not going to be a better, more important opportunity for that. The Lions game will be similar, but that’s an NFC team. The Jags game is also important. You need to beat them, but you I hope you can beat them with whatever your non-weird game plan is. Maybe you can’t, but it it’s just going to be I know it’s we’re literally talking about Sunday, next Sunday on this Tuesday, but it it is going to be a fascinating fascinating matchup. Um, let’s talk more about Taekquin Thornton. Let’s get let’s get into the specifics here because you have a Taekwon Thornton piece in the Chief of the North newsletter. We take a closer look at what he did. um from the the red zone touchdown to what what he was able to do there to the deep shot that didn’t quite land to a couple deep shots that weren’t quite close enough to landing to the one that it was an instant highlight. What what stands out to you in terms of what Taekquin Thornton has done through these first three weeks and specifically against the Giants on Sunday? I think the biggest thing um obviously everyone knew that he had the speed to open up uh and get behind defenses. the consistency that he’s doing that with has been really great and that’s cuz it’s it’s pretty constant. Um there’s been one of the reasons why we’re noticing and Mahomes has never been a great deep ball thrower. And honestly, one thing Chiefs fans, one thing you need to get used to if they’re going to keep throwing deep as often as they have been, you need to get used to seeing more throws that aren’t where they need to be because if you’re throwing the ball 40 yards down the field, you’re going to be less accurate. His accuracy rate on these deep throws actually isn’t bad. at least it wasn’t last time I looked. So, I mean, we’ll see. You’re just going to miss those more often than you are, you know, a fiveyard crosser. That’s just the nature of the beast. Um, how frequently he’s able to get behind a defense. That’s the first one. MVS could get behind the defense sometime, but I mean with Thornton, it’s a lot. And one reason we’re noticing the throws is because he’s consistently open. He’s consistently got a step or three steps um pretty much anytime without having without these defenses and these safeties having Xavier Worthy to worry about by the way. Absolutely. And that’s what’s so exciting about it is that he is making teams pay for variance of single high safety looks. If he’s alone back there, he’s running by guys. And so I’m really curious what that looks like um in terms of once Worthy is back because you really can do some fun things against the quarters looks that have dominated the league with two guys that can get behind the defense. So the other thing that I think has gone underlooked is the work he’s doing at the line of scrimmage. Yeah. And that’s what’s separating him I think now from when he came into the league. that touchdown. Um, just did a great I mean, he’s facing press man coverage on the boundary. This is the exact thing he’s not supposed to be able to beat. He just does a terrific terrific job using his length because again, you got to remember he is 6’2. He’s got I think it’s 33 and a/4 inch arms. For a wide receiver, that’s like 80th percentile. Um, that’s longer than some people that eventually play tackle. And so, he has the ability to strike first. He’s got the ability to swipe arms off him and he’s he’s showing a better release package than he has at any point in his career. So on that particular play, he steps in, gets to the gets to the corner’s body, doesn’t allow him to commit to either side, and then just explodes to the inside while swatting down that attempt at jarring him and just bursts inside. And because he accelerates well, he keeps the separation that he gets. So MVS had a pretty good release package off the line. The problem is that first 10 yards, he’s not open because he accelerates slowly. Uh same with Justin Watson. He can accelerate quickly and maintain that top speed. So that’s why he was able to to travel all the way up into the end zone and stay open for Mahomes to go one, two, okay, don’t like it. Three, boom. And that’s what timing routes look like. He’s hitting the back of the end zone right as Mahomes is throwing the ball. That’s the way it it ought to look. Um those are things that he does really well and those are all he actually so uh one of my favorite plays is just a seven yard gain second and two the corner is playing like 15 yards off him so he just runs a speed out seven easy yards and that’s what happens when you’re running by guys if you can turn if you and again MVS has a useful skill set is not a guy that could execute speedouts very well so he has a skill set as we continue to see him build on it that if he keeps doing this stuff consistently is a right now he’s playing like a legitimately good wide receiver three keeps doing what he’s doing that starts to bump up um to where a legitimately good you know maybe a passable wide receiver two to legitimately good wide receiver two. One thing for him he is able to adjust on the ball but he doesn’t have elite hand strength and we’ve seen that on a few. So there was a downfield ball down the right side of the sideline against the Eagles that he really should have hauled in. Like some of the misconnections deep between him and Mahomes have been on Mahomes. Mahomes overthrowing him a little bit. That kind of stuff or a lot in some cases, but some of them have been on him. He should have hauled in that one down the sideline. He should have hauled in that first potential touchdown against uh who are they playing? The Giants. There it is. Um again, 40. You know, it’s he should have hauled that in. couldn’t quite survive contact, but then he makes an incredible adjustment, snags the ball out of the air on the next play. So, he does have decent hands. They’re just not necessarily high level. And when you’re a downfield guy, you’re going to see some variance with that. Um, and that’s just something to think about in terms of as opposed to guys that are like elite downfield guys, those are guys that are haul in basically everything. So, that’s one thing. Um, contested catches aren’t really his thing. You had that um at the end of the first half where Mahomes really underthrew him to an extent, put it more towards the middle of the field than he should have, but Thornton also kept moving his momentum backwards and didn’t make a strong grab at the ball. That was catchable. He let the defender kind of play through his hands. And again, Mahomes could have thrown a better ball, too. But those are like kind of those 50-50 moments that might keep him from maybe being like a like a wide receiver one. But what he’s showing right now, you keep doing this, especially getting behind a defense over and over. That allows you so many more ways to win underneath easily. Like again, just your seven yard speed out and then that of course leads to double moves, all that stuff. So, he does a lot of things well that can be weaponized. I don’t want to get too carried away because there’s still work to be done like um the the play where he stole Brown’s third down conversion, right? One of the reasons that play looked so messy was because he got jammed into oblivion. Now, he eventually recovered and used his left arm to chuck the corner aside. Great recovery, but he did get thrown way off his timing and that resulted in Kelsey running into him. That that’s not on Kelsey. That was on him. That’s always going to be at least somewhat of an issue unless he can really Now, if he develops on that the way he’s developed in this last year, we might be cooking with gas a little bit. At this point, I would say that Thornton is the Chief’s best receiver currently on the field. I think he separates better down the field, for sure. Down the field, he separates at a high level, and that is a weaponizable skill set in a way that Brown hasn’t shown the ability to separate quite the same way at any level at this point. He can he can separate intermediate, but not as consistently. So, I think right now he’s a guy who and I this is what I wrote about. He’s their best receiver on the field right now should be at the center of their game plan in in pushing the ball down the field. And when Worthy is back and Rice is back, Andy is going to be a little bit crazy if he doesn’t have Thornton as wide receiver three because his skill set is what by far meshes the best with Rice, Worthy, and Kelsey. I I think for me it’s the it’s the sort of multi-dimensionality that you ended up getting to like all of the points of two prongs that that he’s winning. He is winning in different ways and that you can see how that continues, right? Where where you have the if not elite the the the tantalizing deep downfield separation that he’s been able to show consistently. And you’ve you’ve written about him twice in the last month. like we have plenty of examples of him being open and not getting the ball, but also we have seen those hit. So this is point one a it’s not all theoretical. It’s not just well he’s open on film here or there and if the def or if safety you know when Worthy comes back if the safeties start shifting over to pay more attention to Worthy well then maybe Thornton that to me is kind of like part of the Justin Watson problem right where Justin Watson had a couple of plays here and there but the theoretical ceiling for him was a player who could also stretch the field for you down he’s running cardio the MVS thing was you you saw it but then you lost it and for a while it was well can he get back to what we’ve seen from him and then he never really did so the fact that it’s just like it is tangible. We are seeing it. That’s 1 A. And then 1B is the multi-dimensionality where I got the red zone rep just like looping here from the newsletter. It’s also something you mentioned the quickness and the speed to escape there, but he’s also not he’s not throttling down. That’s not true. But he’s not using the speed that shows up in the deep stretch route stuff, right? This isn’t this isn’t him at full stride. And he has to use his body and the long arms you mentioned. He uses he uses his body to make like a little bit of a shield here. And it’s a great throw from Mahomes. That is not a big window where everybody’s starting to to meet in the middle there a little bit. That to me is not only sustainable, it’s necessary. And again, if if that’s if that’s Rashi Rice’s route in the future and Thornton’s lined up further outside, hey, so be it. You know, life is life is good. But the fact that this does seem to be the type of player that can let Xavier Worthy live as something less than the sole focus of a defense’s attention or or actually let him be and then you can throw the ball to Taekwon Thornton where I just it does feel like those pieces have already meshed together pretty well that they can mesh together well when if hopefully the room is at full strength before too long. I it’s just very very exciting. It’s also really fun for one of these receivers, and everyone knows what I mean, for one of these receivers to show you through three regular season weeks that we didn’t just fall in love in training camp, right? Like we talked about Thornton last year. I was, you know, simply covering the team too closely and like writing, “Breaking news. The Chiefs have signed former Patriots wide receiver Taekwon Thornton to the practice squad. What’s he going to do?” Um but but that that process of hey let’s bring in this reclamation project. Let’s let him get familiar with the offense. Get him up to speed here a little bit. Have them have a training camp. And and Nate called it pretty early in camp. It was like no the process here was really really good. And it I want to give the Chiefs credit for making that process work. Now, we need to see the usage continue because like you said, who who on this offense right now is rightfully demanding the football more than Taekwon Thornton. Um maybe in terms of volume, maybe Kelsey with how he’s opening up, but really with how defenses are playing him, not really right. It’s wild. I mean, it’s just I don’t know. Truly fascinating and a very very good thing. Um so again, you can read that the Chief of North newsletter. It is worth watching all the clips and it just reminds you again like oh like here’s how many reps he was either like open or at least winning his rep on in a way that’s that’s very very impressive. We need to take our second timeout. We’ll do that now. We’ll come back and give the spotlight to the Chief secondary because I think they deserve it. What’s up everybody? I believe everyone needs a home because when you have home, you have hope. The reality is that when you’re building a business, one thing you don’t think about is like what a true banking relationship means. And you know, I had the honor and privilege of meeting uh Debbie early on in my career when I was just trying to get going. And as a small business, it’s really uh challenging at times because people don’t understand the concept or not believe the longevity because you’re just getting started. But Debbie was willing to uh take a a chance on me, take be patient with me. Um I almost look at it like a grassroot initiative. She seen she seen and believe what I’m about. Anybody that’s really true about their business and want to get some things done, I would definitely trust hands down Enterprise because Deb’s team along with Aaron and Jackie and all the amazing people that work behind the scenes, even from the treasury side, I would say, hey, give them an opportunity because you won’t be disappointed and you will actually be in hands that actually somebody care and that will see you from start to finish. Let’s talk about the most fun thing from this game. I think Seth, uh the uh we mentioned Cowboys defense not good. We’re aware. Uh but Russell Wilson and the New York Giants. Russell Wilson no longer the starting quarterback of the Giants by the way. Good luck Jackson Dart. I I’m just going to stick with good luck. Um but they put up 37 points on the Cowboys. took him to overtime last week and Malik Neighbors and Wendell Robinson went absolutely nuts. Yep. In this game, if you didn’t know, if if you haven’t checked the box score, you know who the New York Giants leading receiver was on Sunday night? Do you know, Seth? I actually have no Was it Cam Scatabo? It was Cam Scatabo. Six catches for 61 yards. Uh he was their leading receiver. And look, it’s a good good game for for him altogether. 121 allpurpose yards for Alcam. Good for him. If that’s all you got working on a team with Malik Neighbors, that’s a a good a good bit of negotiation by the Chiefs defense. Malik Neighbors got targeted seven times and Jaylen Watson had half as many catches on those targets as Malik Neighbors did. Jaylen Watson had one interception. Malik Neighbors two catches for 13 yards on seven targets. Wandell Robinson 1 for 26. Even Darius Sllayton had a good game against the uh the Cowboys 4 for30. the the Giants passing game especially and you could see Russ looking for it. You could see him in the pocket when he had the time. He was back there. You could see him looking downfield doing a little shoulder twitch of like I want I just want to throw it deep. So I want to throw this ball 40 yards so freaking bad and and the opport. Yes. Yes. That that’s what he that’s why he lives to play quarterback is to throw the throw the moon ball. And I enjoy watching it, especially I enjoyed these attempts on Sunday. But for for the issues and I just uh did a radio hit with good old Carrington Harrison over 965 and he said, “Look, can I I I hear you on the secondary. Can we wait until it’s Lamar Jackson again and not two teams that don’t have functional quarterback passing play?” Yeah, I think that’s fair, but there is a tremendous amount of talent at the wide receiver position for both the Eagles and the Giants. and the Chiefs talent at corner and even at safety has held up stride for stride. So I I do still think that the Ravens are a unique challenge in their own way and the only quarterback who the Chiefs have faced who’s like dealing right now was Justin Herbert who took advantage of all those miscues and the miscommunication and all of that, right? So m maybe maybe they shouldn’t be 100% removed from what happened in week one, but week one was miscommunications. seem like mental mistakes, not knowing where to be, weird stuff like that. Whatever changes have happened, or maybe it’s just improvements from the guys figuring it out, maybe it’s Spag simplifying some things. Maybe it’s just them catching up. I’m not sure. I I think a longer look at the film might be able to give us some hints and maybe that’s after the Ravens game, but the performance from Jaylen Watson in particular, Trent McDuffy, we know how good he is. N Williams has graded out very, very well in the snaps he’s played. He played more. McDuffy got a little more time in the slot and again Brian Cook ended up playing a little more than half of the snaps in this game. He got hurt and so it would have been a little more than that but he returned. Shamari Connors was at 100% again. Chris Roland Wallace has the pick and we’ve been talking about Chris Roland Wallace for a year now. I I just I am extremely impressed by what the Chief Secondary has done and I think they deserve the credit that that these stat lines indicate. Absolutely. Um it’s it’s really an interesting thing and we’ve seen this before with spags where we’ve had rough games with you know miscues and that kind of stuff and then like the very next week suddenly everything’s seems to be tightened up. We know Spags and Dave Merritt are excellent at coaching secondaries. We know they’re good at it. And so that’s why I was so We also know that Brian Cook knows the system. We know Jaden Hicks was considered a really sharp player in college. Like that’s what made how poorly they performed. You know, Connor has his stuff that he’s going to struggle with at times, but like the miscommunication stuff the air that was it was so jarring in week one. They’ve really tightened it up a lot. Like you said, there’s a lot of wide receiver talent. I think that null Williams had too many penalties in college. He’s probably going to have too many penalties as a pro. The best thing that could possibly happen to Noah Williams, honestly, they got to find some way to have him have like a big game on national television, get him some notoriety. Um, and we talked about this with Legarius Sneed in 2023, the best thing that can happen to a physical corner is you get a reputation for being awesome because the refs, they will let you get away with so much more. And that’s that’s just, hey, you’ve earned it. So, you’ve earned the benefit of a doubt on some of those grabs. And that’s just one of those things that like it it just would be interesting to see with him. He shows a real edge, some real physicality that I think the defense needs. Um he fits right in with Watson and McDuffy. Excellent against the the run. Excellent tacklers. Really can make guys pay for for catching the ball. He contests strong. Overall, he looks solid in coverage. It’s interesting because with Christian Fulton out, that was nerve-wracking. We’ll see when he comes back, but that’s been a big part of it, I think, as No Williams coming in, playing pretty well so far, and he’s a rookie. I assume he’s going to have ups and downs. So, that’s been huge. Hicks and Cook in particular playing so much better has been huge. Um, I would just love to see again McDuffy at the nickel fulltime. I He had a great blitz. I mean, he’s so weaponizable there and he helps solve so many problems that they have at times defending the middle of the field and that’s such a big deal. And it also allows you and uh Stephen Holman with a good chat here, null playing means Connor isn’t playing the third corner. They did still have Connor in the slot a few times at least. I don’t love that. But they can if if McDuffy’s in the slot and null Williams or Christian Fulton and Jaylen Watson are the outside corners that allows you to play all over the place with Connor and kind of unleash him, which is what he’s best with. He is best when you kind of rev him up and point and shoot and he can blow up some plays that way. Um, that’s kind of his best usage. And honestly, in the middle of the field, not from the slot where he’s in man coverage, but if he’s in a little more of a robber role, some of that range he has is useful. So, it’s looked so much better. They they had Malik Neighbors just in Hades, man. Um, that I mean, every time they tried to throw him the ball, there were two guys there and it was glorious to watch. Great positioning, and that was the big thing against the Chargers. you just had guys out of position whereas here they’re I mean I didn’t see a blown coverage pretty much all night like if they got a gain they had to earn that thing and Wilson who is not that good a quarterback at this point in his NFL career does still throw a really pretty deep ball and has guys to throw it to and he just couldn’t and when he tried it got picked or knocked down or defended really well. So that was really cool to see. I love seeing um Roland Wallace taking safety snaps. it seems to agree with him. I kind of like them in the slot, but whatever. Um, he’s showed some good instincts. Um, that we know we know a Spag safety can also play in the slot some, so we’ll see what that how that evolves. Absolutely true. So, there there’s just a lot to like about what the secondary is doing right now. Um it was a it’s they’ve played against talented teams that aren’t really well put together um in terms of how they’re coached offensively overall in my opinion. And then the one team that is coached better offensively overall and and I will say week one was one of Spags’s probably worst games I’ve seen. You know, there was Green Bay a couple years ago when the floor kind of panced them a little bit, but like they really did not look ready for what the Chargers were doing. And so I’m curious to see with Baltimore. Uh Baltimore’s got a great offense obviously. I don’t know if they’re going to be able to surprise him as much with the things that they do because they’ve just seen each other a lot and Swags overall has generally done a good job against Lamar Jackson. And here’s just one more interesting thing. This is maybe a preview for next week. The fourman pass rush did a better job against the Giants. Um which is encouraging. still need to see a lot more. Right. The way the Chiefs fourman pass rush works actually it doesn’t hurt them as much I think against the Ravens as it might against other teams because it’s so much more about slowly crushing and maintaining integrity than getting a good rush around the edge which they can’t do. So that is interesting. These are interesting things and so seeing the pass rush come alive a little bit. But I will honestly say a lot of people will asked about the pass rush because like um Omar Norman Lot was credited with like five pressures I that I saw like and someone I think uh Matt tweeted this out uh McMullen with the Chiefs. So I don’t know where they’re grabbing the stats from. Um I I’ll watch Norman Lot’s snaps. I know Carla had some pressures. Jones had some pressures. Not all, but some of those were more um uh coverage induced than than now. Jones had a couple of like, well, I’m going to destroy this play now. And those those were fun to watch, but the coverage being better, that’s what the difference was. We’ve talked about this before between 2023 and 24. Yeah, Charles Amenu played a little better in 23 than he did in 24 and he had a few nice pass rushes. We’ll see. But the biggest thing was their secondary was so good. If you can get the secondary playing better than it did last year, you can be cooking with gas in terms of some of the things that the pass rush does. I know we we will talk about this a bunch on Thursday, but just watching Ravens Lions last night, it was fascinating because you’re, you know, the crushing the pocket, maintaining your lane integrity, and all of that is mandatory. They sacked Lamar seven times last night and it felt like I it wasn’t all but it felt like so many of those were just like grabbing him by the shoestring before he could escape. And I I I will say um it does appear to help to have an Aiden Hutchinson to where you can maintain your rush lanes and you can also apply the pressure and be the aggressor that way. I I am a little bit worried about that. And and look, I mean, I do think Caroff has had a little bit of a better time ultimately going up against another backup and and the Trey Pipkin experience in week one was a very unpleasant one. And then the Eagles experience in week two was not very fun. It was better against this Giants team. But I don’t know. I I I’m curious. I suppose kind of the last thing I wanted to ask about in in light of how good the secondary’s been. I it doesn’t sound to me like you are taking a leap in a positive direction on the fourman pass rush, but you saw enough to be mildly encouraged. Am I am I reading you right there? Where where are you at? It was better. Um I need to see it multiple weeks in a row. And in particular, I mean, it’s really going to be someone’s got to be better. And if it’s Norman L coming in, he looks like he’s moving better than he was in preseason. And so I we can kind of safely assume that was the ankle slowing him down. We just need someone to win one-on-one. And and you know, if it’s if it’s Carlus and Amenu and Norman Lot all being 10% better or one of them being 30% better, that has to happen. And so I’m a little encouraged, but you know, I I I really definitely want to see it where it’s not quite as much coverage induced before I start thinking that, oh, hey, this, you know, things are going to be different now. Uh, you know what, actual last thing, I’m going back to the secondary again. Um, because I don’t, this might be a question you don’t have enough info to answer right now. I don’t have enough info to answer it. I’m asking it genuinely. Um, but I’ve seen and heard a couple things about the Chiefs playing a ton of split safety looks and doing some split zone and man specific they’ve specifically against the Giants. They had a very high percentage of that and I think the highest percentage of cover two that they’ve had in a very long time under Spags. Did you see that? And can you explain what what that does to an opposing quarterback or or why you think Spags went with that against the Giants maybe? Third question. Is that something to keep going back to or was that a Russ and deep moonshot defense to to have be kind of a one-off? I think it was a Russ and moonshot defense. However, because the Chiefs don’t really have a classic pure free safety. I like the idea of them playing a lot of splitfield safety. I think they worry about the middle of the field and they worry about run defense. You explain it better than I did. Um the split field safety. you’re you’re just talking just think just think too deep. That’s it. Um don’t think of it just cover two because two deep safeties can mean all sorts of things. You might be playing man, you might be playing quarters. You’re not necessarily playing cover two just because you got two safeties back there, but it’s it’s uh you know, two safeties here and here, you know, uh closer to the boundary instead of one safety in the middle of the field. It’s really that simple most of the time. Um I think Spags does better. He he has tried to run a lot of different kinds of single high safety stuff with a lot of rotations and that kind of stuff, but they don’t have a pure free safety. Um, and he likes being strong against the run. But the problem is it just leads to more gaps on the back end. And I think some of the guys that they do have are better at disguising out of those looks. You can do different forms of coverage on each side of the field. You know, that’s really what cover six is, is all two different kinds of coverages, one on each side of the field. You can do that when you’ve got split safeties. You can do that when you’ve got two safeties, one on each side of the field. And if you’ve got guys that you trust to come up and play the run from depth, then you’re kind of cooking with gas. You can disguise it better. I hope that’s a sign that they move forward more to that. It also can allow at times for your corners to play a little more aggressively at the line of scrimmage because you’ve got help on the boundary on both sides. And that would go more naturally towards the skill set of Watson and Williams in particular. And to an extent, McDuffy, because while McDuffy is on people like Glue, even down the field, ball skills are his one area where he’s not high level. And so him getting beaten deep can be a bummer. Or even just being one-on-one deep, but if you’ve got a safety over the top there, you don’t have to worry about that as much. You can just allow him to dominate underneath. I would love to see them play more of that. Um, I’d be surprised if it was against the Ravens, though, because you know, with Derrick Henry, if you don’t stop him in those first three yards, you’re in trouble. Your only way of stopping Derrick Henry right now is by taking the football. So, maybe maybe this is the week Mahomes plays some safety or some linebacker or something cuz Mahomes had one of the most impressive punch outs and and football takings of the season and Derrick Henry keeps putting it on the ground. So, there you go, Spags. That one’s for free. Go ask Andy about that one. Ask if you can have Pat on defense for a couple snaps. Let me know how that goes. Yeah, I I I’m looking forward to We got to bully Nate into doing that and then we’ll we’ll get that figured out. But I that is definitely an area I want them to explore more because that’s it fits their personnel best and I feel like so far this season we’ve seen a lot of experimentation even on both sides of the ball trying to figure out who’s doing what. Good enough for me. Who’s doing what right now is the question. Well, bad news, Seth, you’re doing the outro cuz Nate’s not here. it falls to you. I’ll tell you this again. You can uh check out Seth’s Chief of the North newsletter at mnfan.substack.com and uh we’ll be back with Nate on Thursday to look ahead to a absolutely massive game that I will reiterate this again on Thursday. I’ve already said it once today, two one and two teams who both have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, who have two close losses to two good teams and one better win against a bad team. That’s the exact same spot that the Chiefs and the Ravens are in right now. Uh so it will be fascinating to see how that game comes together. But Seth, we’re not going to do this show again until Thursday. I’m going to need you to find some way to tide us over till then. Get us out of here. You know, something for Chiefs fans to keep in mind um as the uh as the the game against the Ravens approaches and what we should have been keeping in mind during the doldrums of the second quarter against the Giants. You know what? Sometimes things are tough. Sometimes everything is just going wrong. Things aren’t working out the way you want them to. Uh it seems, you know, people are running into each other. It’s a whole It’s a whole deal. No matter what you try, you just can’t seem to push through and accomplish the things that need to be accomplished. And I would just let you know that when you feel that way in football or in life, don’t ever underestimate the value of a haircut and a nice shirt. I thought for sure that was going to end up being about the rapture.

Seth Keysor and Joshua Brisco recap the Chiefs win over the Giants and discuss their biggest takeaways from it heading into an important Week 4 matchup against the Ravens.

  1. I like Pacheco. But the Chiefs need complimentary skills in the RB room. To say they could use an explosive, dual-threat RB who creates horizontal stress isn’t a knock on Pacheco. It’s an acknowledgment that Mitchell disappointed their plans. It’s an estimation of a wager too steep to expect a raw rookie RB with unproven traits and limited experience as an RB to fill that need as the season progresses.

  2. I’m highly concerned that Worthy will be unable to make any notable impact with a torn labrum (not through lack of blood, sweat, tears). I don’t know what is reasonable for him to be able to do in a couple months but, for me, hard to not be pessimistic.

Also, Jalen Royals better have his head on a swivel next year given the 2nd year WR “friendly fire” curse.

  3. I dislike the term pure free safety. What does it mean? Does it just mean fast? I’ll never know what a pure point guard is. But I know every team I’ve ever liked reportedly needed one.

  4. I think Andy got after Kelce because of the lackluster effort he puts into blocking for his teammates. I’ve seen several plays where if the ball isn’t coming his way, then he’s not even remotely interested in getting involved. Bottom line is that his blocking has been a issue for this offense. It’s clear as day Travis has become a diva, especially after…never mind 🙃
