đź”´ LIVE : Houston Astros vs Oakland Athletics | Sept 24th FULL GAME | MLB THE SHOW 25 SIMULATION
So, just about set and today’s starting pitcher, Mitch Spence. Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad. But I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners, be able to throw a pitch. He’s going to get a swing and miss. Get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. [Applause] And a swing and a line drive out of right field. And there’s one down. Now we check out the Astros lineup. And sing. I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Wit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. Come on. Carlos Kareah batting with one down takes a strike. And downstairs that one way inside. Straighten him up a little bit. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul straight back. And it remains two and two [Music] and delivers outside. Deep drive down the line. Foul ball. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Gets a piece and stays alive. One down. Base is empty. Got him. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strikeout. You can’t be mad at yourself after an bat like that one. So two down now and here is Isak Paredus just missed. Two outs. Base is empty. Up the middle and that chance handled and it’s a one, two, three inning. [Applause] Astros are down quietly and now the Athletics offense gets its first shot here. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and on the mound today, Jason Alexander. What do we need to know here? Yeah, he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip, but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners, put his team in a position to win a ball game. So, we know he’s prepared. We know this guy is a competitor. And we’ll watch how it works in this one. Bottom of the first, here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Singi, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible now. starts him off with the breaking ball, which isn’t surprising. They’re trying to keep him off balance, but he’s been known to connect on the breaking stuff, too. Ripped in the air, left field, and a touchdown for a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting second, third baseman, Brent Rooker. Next up for the A’s, Brent Rooker. Ball one and a pitch inside. [Music] Next one misses and the count now two with nothing. Swinging a drive deep right field and that is a foul ball. Got him. One gone. bottom half of the first. Good pitch right there. I mean, he’s attacking a location that this guy at the plate tends to have trouble with. And there’s just so much information in this day and age. Sometimes too much information. But the guys that can take that information, process it, and then go out there, boo, and execute the pitch, go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating. That’s really good pitching right there. And it’s a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together. Nick Curts up next for the A’s Nick towards first and that’s a fair ball. Lead runner makes the turn at second right past his coach headed for the plate. Ball comes home and he’s dead at the plate. Well, this just can’t happen right there. You can’t try to score from first base with less than two outs unless you can pretty much walk across the dick. And to get thrown out like that really throws water on the fire of a rally in this inning. [Applause] So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Here’s the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. Squirts away a little bit. [Applause] Swing and a ball hammered left field. That one’s back and that ball is out of here. And that gives him the lead. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Applause] That was one of those home runs where you really don’t know if he got enough of it off the bat. I mean, he put a good swing on it clearly, but I wouldn’t say he really got the sweet spot on the bat. The exit below wasn’t anything too impressive, but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows. Base is empty with two away. Stepping in, Jacob Wilson [Applause] out of line out towards center. pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is that. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And it’s two zip. All set for the start of the inning. Now the leftielder, Jesus Sanchez. Spence back to work. And there’s the strike. [Music] [Applause] Next offering down low and in the dirt. [Applause] got him swinging. Here’s the veteran first baseman, Christian Walker. And a foul ball line to left. Soderstrom makes the grab and there’s two gone. Batty six. Catcher Yiner Diaz. Two outs. Space is empty. So, next up for Houston, Yiner Diaz. This lineup’s going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound. I mean, he is just mowing him down. He’s settling in. You got to make him uncomfortable. Maybe step out of the box, call timeout, do whatever it takes. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Man at first. Now it’s going to be Jake Meyers swinging a foul back that’s out of play. Diaz off of first with two away. Let’s go. Ripped into right center and that should be extra bases. Lead runner around second coming home. Safe and they trail by one. Well done. Drives in the run. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field. And it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. So, runner at second, two down. Zack Cole up next for the Astros. In the air, left field down the line. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. The round from second is the tying run. Oh, that’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. [Applause] Here’s Mauricio Dubon. fought off foul. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. [Applause] Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. They get two runs on three hits, no errors and one left. Now to the bottom of the second, we are tied 2-2. We head to the bottom of the second leading off Carlos Cortez. Carlos Cortez just missed. [Applause] in there at the knees and the count is one and one. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff for the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be because it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. sometimes being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. Two two now. He caught it behind his back. The throw and very nicely done for the out. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Daryl Hernese up next for the A’s. First pitch misses [Applause] and he grounds one to the right side. Altuve tosses to first. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Betting eighth. Catcher Willie Macyver. Here’s the catcher to hit Willie Macyver. And first offering is fouled off. tied up here in the early going. And that misses and the count even one and one. And a big swing and a miss. The strong second inning is a confidence builder for him. A relief for his manager. Doesn’t have to get into that bullpen quite as early. [Applause] Ripped to right. He’s there. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. Nothing doing here this half. We play two full. We are tied 2-2 and welcome back to the ballpark al that clips the corner. [Applause] to third. Rooker the throw to first and they get out for the owl. [Applause] Now batting the designated hitter, Carlos Koreah. And here comes Carlos Koreah. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Koreah in his 10th season, 30 years old now, and he was born in Puerto Rico. And that’s off the outside edge. Ball one. And that clips the inside corner. Swinging a ground ball. knocks it down. The throw is late and they can’t get the out. Isach Paradis now at the plate. He’s 0 for one. And that one fouled off. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. One ball in the dirt. swing and a miss. Dropped him out of the slider and there’s two gone. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jesus Sanchez. His first at bat was a strike out. Ball one. No strikes. There’s the strike. Here’s a rocket out to left. Squeezes it and that’ll do it. One left for Houston. Score remains deadlocked at 2-2. [Applause] And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. And the batter now, Max Schuman. slap the other way. Foul and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Way outside. One and two to Cal. [Applause] swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that turns the lineup over. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. So, the batting order turns over and now the center fielder Lawrence Butler one for one. He let run around to go swing and a miss. Safe at second with a stolen base and the go ahead run is now at scored position [Applause] [Applause] and a pinch hit in the air left field. brings it in and there’s one away. Now batting third baseman Brent Rooker. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Rooker digs in now. Struck out swinging his first time. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that one’s a little bit low. One and0. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound. In this situation, ahead 200, he’s put himself in a really good spot. man at second up the middle. Dubong to first and there’s two away. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. You can do it. And that one is lifted in the air. Makes the catch. That is the inning. The A’s strand one. Score remains 2-2 as we go to the top of the fourth. And stepping in for the Astros, Christian Walker. Just missed. And that one a little below the knees. And the count is 2 and 0. just off the inside edge. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Swings through that one for strike one. There’s a swing and a drive and it looks like trouble. makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double in the fourth. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Yiner Diaz up next for the Astros. Singled and scored his first time. fouled off. He was late. Walker at second with nobody out. Hard on the ground to first and he takes it himself for the out. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third. Now they have a chance to drive in the go ahead run. It’s not a knock, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jake Meyers will hit next. A double and a run scored his first time up. That clips the inside corner for a strike. You know, this guy’s great speed is in the back of that pitcher’s mind. If he can get on, it’s going to give him one more thing he’s got to think about. Smash to the left side, slinging it to first in time. Now batting right fielder Zack Cole. So up next, Zack Cole doubled his first time up. [Applause] And he hits a ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But they push across one run on one base hit. No errors and no one left on. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Astros three and the A’s two. Now at the plate, Tyler Sodro A’s left fielder Tyler Soderstrom. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Swung on. Belted. Gone. He dunks it off the foul pole. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And we are starting over. It’s 33. He only needed one swing to square it up. without wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something, but really it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. The batter now, Jacob Wilson swings and misses. That’s strike one. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. [Applause] Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s one and two on the ground out to short. One away. That ground ball may have him back on track after the home run. Good late bite on that slider. Got the hitter out front. Rolled over on it. Exactly what he was supposed to do. Next up for the A’s, Carlos Cortez. Grounded out his first time. [Applause] This one ripped but foul to the right [Applause] and that one sliced foul. One down. Base is empty. Swings through it and that’s a strikeout. Daryl Hernandez up next for the Ace for one. He ground it out in his first at down and away for ball one. [Applause] Left field. Sanchez makes the play and that is that. The A’s get one on this homer. We’re tied now at three a piece. You’re dialed into the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the short stop. Mauricio Dub Spence back to work. The shorts stop takes the ball. line drive caught. They put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard. You know, line drives won’t always find a hole, but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit below, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. He’s controlling things out there on the mound, not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. That misses. Ball one. Base is empty, one away, and we’re in the top of the fifth. Ripped to third and caught. That’ll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it. I mean, he could have hit that ball more on the screws than he did, and yet he’s got nothing to show for it. Hang with him. I know the feeling. Here’s Carlos Koreah, one for two, swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one’s gone. And the Astros jump in front. It’s 4-3. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Well, he went up there. O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. Isach Paredes up next for the Astros. And that’s him for a strike. One. [Applause] Two down. Do on swing. And that ball smashed on a line. And that is that. Carlos Kareah with the key. Hit this inning. It’s now a 43 ball game. Back after this on the show. Bottom of the inning. And now here’s the A’s catcher Willie Macyver. Catcher Willie Macyver. [Applause] That’s a slider for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Holds it in for the out. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. Sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit. So that will bring up the top of the order with one away. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. So the lineup flips over. Lawrence Butler up next for the A’s and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Applause] and fouled off with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. That’s down and in. A slider missed man at first. One away. Pickoff throw and he dives back in safely. Got him swaging. He chased the change up that K is his third of the game. Now batting now the third base Rooker two in this one. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Alexander checks the runner and he’s back in easily [Applause] and the one. Oh, look at the stop. Throw to second. Got him. A beautiful play to end the inning. Now pitching. We’re back and they make a change to start the six. The new pitcher JT Gin and he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Now here is Jesus builder Jesus Sanchez. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Sanchez goes 6 ft 3 in 220 lb and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Two balls, no strikes to count. pulls that one foul and that’s outside and now three and one tap foul at the plate. Foul ball and it remains a full count. [Music] Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Well, he hasn’t gotten the result yet, but it’s got to feel pretty confident. Three foul balls in a row. He’s right on this guy. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Cortez brings it in with a nice running grab. Maybe caught that one off the edge just a little bit. Couldn’t quite barrel it up enough to really drive it. Walker. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. That one in the dirt and that’s ball one. The Athletics have some bullpen action. Elvis Alvarado up and throwing. Number 49 also getting ready. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Gets off a throw and it’s in time. And it wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Yer Diaz. Two down, base is empty. Now a chance for Yiner Diaz, known for his rocket arm behind the plate. Let’s go. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. way out front for strike two. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing anding miss and get through this at bat and a one-two ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Now batting center fielder Jake Meyers. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Jake Meyers. [Applause] Great two out hits. Two consecutive base hits for this team. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. First and second, two outs. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Zack Cole. And that one fouled off. [Applause] [Applause] in the air left field. Sodestrom on the move, brings it in and that’s the third out. So they strand a pair hard in the order 345 coming up. It’s the Astros four and the A’s three. And we’re back. And now the first baseman, Nick Curt. First baseman. Nick Curts. That one close. Rule the ball and it’s one and0. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Sliced hard but foul. Strike three. Got him swinging. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. So here’s the cleanup hitter, Tyler Soderstrom. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. This one chopped on the ground but fouled. Let’s go to baby. Let’s go in the air. Left field down the line. Makes the grab for the second out. As good as he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand. You cannot hang a breaking ball right there. Lucky it stayed in the ballpark. Wilson. Next is the designated hitter, Jacob Wilson. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. And now maybe extra bases, the throw into second. Not going to get him. He’s in there all over that one right there. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. So runner at second, two down. Next to hit, Carlos Cortez. [Applause] Late swing fouled to the left. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits with the tying run at second here in the bottom of the six. [Music] [Applause] Ripped to short. throws to first in time. That ends the inning. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Astros four and the A’s three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top of inning number seven. And stepping in for the Astros, Mauricio Dubon. turned on, but that’s fouled down the third baseline. In the air, right side, Cortez makes the catch and there’s one down. Up next for the Astros, second base. So digging in, Jose Altuve 0 for three in this one. And that’s downed away. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Misses off the inside. And that’s ball two. And there’s the strike. It’s amazing to look up and see 88 miles per hour on that change up. Back in the day, that was a pretty good fast ball. But with high velocities these days, that speed differential is right where it needs to be. Next offering upstairs on the inside corner for called strike three. So he gets the call and picks up the strike out. looking sometimes with a good hitter at the plane, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. And next is the designated hitter, Carlos Kareah. It was a homer for him back in the fifth. Just a solo shot, but an important swing in this game. Yeah, and it was a beautiful swing as well. Everything just came together timing wise and they blasted it out of here. That one misses ball one outside. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So I think the confidence level is raised right here. There’s the strike. That one fouled off. got him looking and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing there for Houston, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. [Applause] [Music] The Astros turn to a new arm of the mound, AJ Blue Ball. He’s certainly been one of their better relief pitchers this season. The numbers are really solid, so they feel great about handing the ball over to him. Well, one run game. Daryl Hern getting ready to hit. Daryl Hern [Applause] delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Activity in the bullpen for Houston. Danielle de los Santos up and loosening in the pen. King, the lefty warming up as well, [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. Swinging at a highf fly ball down the right field line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and a quick out number one. Catcher Willie McGyver Willie McGyver now at the plate. [Applause] And that’s way high. And that’s ball one. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. [Applause] [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Makes the grab. Two away. Now batting second base Max. So up next, Max Schum. He’s two for two. Let’s go to baby. Let’s go. Let’s go. And that’s through there for a strike. 4 and one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. That one off the mark. And that is ball one. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] fights it off. He’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him swinging and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nothing doing there for the A’s. Score holds at 43. [Music] Now pitching for the welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Mason Barnett and he’s had a really hard time throwing strikes so far this season. His walk rate is up there among the worst in the league for relievers. Paradis in the box now. No balls in a strike. Out to center. Butler sizing this one up. He makes the grab. One up. One down. Now batting left fielder Jesus Sanchez. Here’s the left fielder. Jesus Sanchez. First pitch and he just misses. The A’s bullpen has some movement. Number 49, the young right-hander up and throwing. McGuff warming up as well. Next pitch way upstairs. And there’s a foul ball. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. That’s a laser base hit. Everything came together for him. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front. Ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. And next to hit for Houston, Christian Walker, one for three. Late swing fouled off. Come on. Run around to go. Cut on and miss. Throw. save. [Music] And there’s a base hit to left. Sanchez around third. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Oh, that was a great job of letting that runner steal second base. Get in the scoring position. Come through with the base knock. You add a run. And now Yiner Diaz. [Applause] First offering runner goes hammered down the right side but foul. And that drops in for a strike. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Misses inside. It’s a ball and two strikes. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Lifted in the air right field. Cortez. He’s got it. Two away now. [Applause] Now batting the center fielder Jake Myers. Jake Meyers digs in. Now it’s amazing. We get a chance to talk to a lot of opposing managers. This guy scares managers on the other team as much as anyone. and he gets to fly beneath the radar with the other more recognizable names in this lineup. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] [Applause] Slice down the right side. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That’s a little bit low. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another Walker. The runner at first with two gone. [Applause] spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] Line drive, base hit right field. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Zack Cole will hit next. Right fielder Zack Cole. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. And a curve misses outside. One and0. Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. [Music] Not close with that one. And now two and 0. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Applause] [Music] Fouled off left side. Traffic on the bases with one already in and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. [Applause] Two on, two outs. That one lifted to left. pulls it in on the run and that’ll do it. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now 53. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Anel de los Santos. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Now, here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. Lawrence Butler. And that’s off the inside edge. Ball one. Activity in the Houston bullpen. Brian Abrau, the closer, is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. That’s long gone. [Applause] His 22nd homer of the year. It’s 54. He just sent this stadium into a frenzy. They’re going nuts. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. So digging in, Brent Rooker 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. [Music] [Applause] Now it’s deep to left. Way out of here. Home run. his 31st home run of the season and we are tied. It’s 55. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now, dude. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collected confidence just continues to grow. [Applause] Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. And that drops in for a strike. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Way inside. and a swing and a miss. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Here comes the manager out of the dugout. And he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Daniel de los Santos departs and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. now pitching for. So they turn to the lefty in this spot. Ryan King bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. But what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head. Next offering upstairs. Highfly ball down the left field line. drops into the glove and there’s two down. Now batting designated hitter Jacob Wilson. Now the A’s designated hitter Jacob Wilson [Applause] [Applause] in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. [Applause] Foul ball there. [Applause] Two outs. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] stays alive. One and two now. Fast ball is outside. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. And that’s outside. Carlos Cortez in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Swing and a line drive slicing into right field. Cole makes the grab and that will end the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working all even at five a piece. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back as we have a pinch hitter to lead it off. Jeremy Pñena, he represents the go-ahead run. Barnett back to work and that skips in the dirt. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Makes the grab. One down. Here’s the Astros leadoff man, Jose Altuve. [Music] [Applause] fought off foul. All tied up here in the top of the ninth [Applause] and that one fouled off. [Applause] What a stop. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first, but the out. Oh man, great diving play over there to prevent the winning run from reaching base here in the ninth inning. That’s absolutely huge. You love to see that kind of play made in big moments by the defense. Now here is Carlos Koreah. Pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. Go into center. Dives and he can’t hang on around first. Heading for two to second and he’s safe. And his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton. And everything seems to get started around this guy. Making a move at second base. Astros going with a pinch runner. Cam Smith. Go ahead run on base. Isak Paredus the next to hit. So the go-ahehead run is into scoring position now. The left fielder Jesus Sanchez. [Applause] It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. [Applause] Late that time. It’s strike two. Smith the lead runner at second. Paradus on first with two down. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. He’s in a tough spot. Had to make a great pitch. Did it. Got the strike out. Gets out of the jam. Clearly, he’s happy with those results. back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth. Craig Kimell, number 46, Craig Kimell. And now Carlos Cortez athletics right fielder Carlos Cortez breaks his bat. There’s a soft liner on to first and the lead off man retired here in the ninth. Well, as a hitter it can be kind of tough. You get a hard throwing reliever that comes in the ball game. You don’t know exactly what his pitches are doing. And that clearly blew him up on the hand. Sought off that bat. Tell you what, the bat companies, they’re pretty happy when guys like this come in out of the bullpen. Next up for the A’s, Daryl Hernese. And the sweeper is off the plate. [Applause] [Applause] And that is out of play. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open. [Applause] And that one is in the dirt. And now two balls and two strikes. Willie Macyver in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. He’s looking to put the go ahead run on base. Ball four. He walked in and that keeps things going. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that one. Willie here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. Willie MacGyver up next for the A’s. [Applause] Off the mark there. And that’s ball one. One down. Winning run out at first. Kimrell throws over. [Applause] misses again. Five in a row. [Applause] Ruer takes off. Pitch in for a strike. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. Well, having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases, even if you’ve got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. The winning run on second base. Outside low and the count is three and one. Pull four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. [Applause] First and second, one out. Digging in, Max Schuman. And there’s no doubt that they’ll feed off the energy from this crowd, right? I mean, yeah, I’d say the intensity level has gone up a few notches for sure. Ground ball left side down the line and it’s fouled. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. One away and the gamewinning run stands at second. [Applause] gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Applause] Leans over that right arm dangling out there to center. Meyers grabs it on the run. Nothing instills more confidence in a team than a center fielder who makes a great play like that on the run. They can feed off the energy he brings just from his playmaking abilities. Now here’s the lead off hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. He’s coming off a big swing of the bat in the eighth inning, Chris. Yeah, he may still be riding a little high and for him hopefully the confidence is still there cuz a solo shot and a very important run in this game. First offering misses badly for ball one. Winning run and scored position with two away. Right through there for a strike. One ball, one that one missed. [Applause] Swinging a miss. Two and two now in the dirt. Well done behind the dish and that’ll load the bases. Oh, that sets up a really big at bat in this game. And these are the moments when everyone in the stadium gets really locked in. Brent, big bat from Brent Rooker. Now he’s already homered here in this one. [Applause] Ball one there. Well, he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse. Then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this. Winning run at third. Two down. [Applause] Just off the inside edge. He’s going to have to find a way to get back in the zone. Good thing for the hitter. Should expect a strike right here knowing the pitcher can’t walk it. trying to send this extra innings. Fouled off down the right side. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Then boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball. This to third. Parade fires over to first. That’s the third out and we’re headed to extras. So, they can’t come up with the winning run and that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. We’re all tied up 55. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Everett on for his major league debut. So, we’ll see if he’s ready for the big stage. He just has to remember this is the same game that he’s played all the way through the minor leagues to this point. The only difference, runner in scoring position, no outs. And stepping in for the Astros, Christian Walker. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. This to third. Rooker one away in the top half of the 10. Now the catcher up to hit Yiner Diaz. Well, first base open really no reason to pitch to this hitter right here. Put him on. Have the force at second first. Perhaps getting inning ending double play in the dirt and that’s ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Scott McGuff appears to be getting loose. Alvarado getting loose as well. One out. The go-ahead run is at second. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Everett checks the runner. Sanchez back on a dive. [Applause] Good job to fight that one off. [Applause] got him looking and to nice work there to get the strike out and that’s a big second out. I’ll tell you this crowd will be fired up if they can get out of this and leave that go ahead run stranded in scoring position. This is a big moment in this game. [Applause] So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Here’s the center fielder Jake Meyers. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] This one lifted in the air left field. Sodestro under it brings it in and that’s the third out. So, the Astros leave one. This ball game still tied. Five all. Now pitching for back here in extras. And a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Hernandez. He’s been so good against lefties. And now Nick Curts, one for four with a double. [Applause] First pitch misses [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. [Applause] Base hit right field. Throw comes in and the winning run stops 90 ft from home. Nobody out. So they hold the runner at third wanting to play it safe. Think that comes back to bite him. Boy, it’s hard to say. That runner on second to start extras is critical. You want to make sure you don’t waste him. They don’t score this inning. There’ll be some second guessing for sure. And here is Tyler Sodro. That one misses ball one. And another ball. The Astros have some action in their pen. Brian Abrau, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Ochre getting cranked up as well. [Applause] [Music] in the air left side. Makes the grab. Runner tags. This should do it. In comes the winning run and the A’s walk it off in extra innings. These can be tough at bats when you know you’ve got to get the ball in the air. At worst case scenario, that pitcher is going to try to tie you up, throw you up and in. But he did a good job pulling the hands through extension to put that ball deep enough out into the outfield to score that run and win this game. [Applause] 65 the final here today. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB. the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
