đź”´ LIVE : Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays | Sept 24th FULL GAME | MLB THE SHOW 25 SIMULATION
So, just about set now. Now, the starting pitcher in this one, number 56. What do we have on him? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So, when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games. And stepping in for Boston, Jiren Durant. That’s too low. And this one is off and running. Swing and a miss. And a count even at one. On the mound. You take a note. You see the hitter’s willingness to chase that pitch upstairs. Get deeper in the count. You try to climb the ladder. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Line drive, base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the at being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Nice line drive to the pull side. met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Trevor Story comes up to the plate and that’s fouled off. [Applause] Nobody out. Runner at first. [Music] That one inside. Look out. The one-1 is fouled off. Durant aboard here at first with nobody out. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. The one two swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it. And that should quiet this home crowd. It’s two nothing. Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time, took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Here’s Alex Bregman. He’s been a great free agent side. Pitch misses there. Ball one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Red Sox already leading. Sing maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Now, those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Check out the Red Sox lineup. Makes things happen for them with his legs. Romy Gonzalez, tops on the team in batting average, Boo, a guy who’s showing off some excellent bat-to ball ability when he digs in at the plate. You know, that’s useful if your team needs to get an inning going, get a leadoff man on, but it’s also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he’s a run producer who can drive in runs if you got guys on base already. So, he’s a huge piece in this lineup. Masataka Yoshida in the box now as he leaves that one up high [Applause] and a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. in the air left field down the line and no one can get there around first heading for two and that’s a two bagger. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. [Applause] Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Just missed. [Music] Next offering upstairs. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position. He’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. [Applause] Line drive and that’s a base hit. The throw in. He beats it. Safe. It’s three zip. Well done. Drives in the run. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Nathaniel Low up to hit. [Applause] Lined into right. Lucas snags it and there’s two away. Batting seven, centerfielder, Sidon Raphaela. So, two down now. And here is Sidon Raphaela. Chris, he’s definitely going to finish the year with a new careerhigh in homers. We just don’t know how many he’s going to hit quite yet. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and0. Raphaela measures 5′ 10 in, 24 years old, and he’s a native of Kurissau. Sliced hard but foul, two outs. And a foul ball. That one way inside. [Applause] And they’ll do it again. [Music] slashes this one and it could be trouble. Lead runner touches second. Headed for third. Coming home. He’ll score easily. Comes through with the RBI. Fast pretty much middle middle. And that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. Will Abrau getting ready to hit. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. That’s a little high. One and0. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. [Applause] Check swing called strike. [Applause] Next offering in there for a strike. That is strike two. A one-two count. All he’s seen is fast balls. You’ve got to expect something off speed. Stay back. Kicks and deals. Pitch misses there. And it’s two and two. That’s a little bit low. Raphaela at second with two down. [Applause] Jimenez fires over to first and they’re happy to just get off the field after that frame. They get four runs on five hits, no errors and leave one. On to the bottom of the first. The Red Sox four and the Blue Jays coming up back here at Rogers Center towing the slab in today’s game. Steven Mats, what’s the scouting report on him? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. George Springer, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. [Music] This one in the air right field. Fair ball safe at second with a leadoff double. Baby, I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Runner in scoring position, no outs. And now it’s Daltton Vo and Springer’s in there safely. Toronto. First pitch just misses. Next offering is fouled back. No outs. Runner on second. That one off the mark and it’s two and one. [Music] Fouled off to the right. [Music] And that’s downstairs and outside. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Runner at second. Nobody out. And that’s a base hit. And they’re at the corners with nobody out. Showing a lot of fight with two strikes in that AB. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. That one missed. No outs. Runners at first and third. Ground ball left side and foul ball. [Music] Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Misses. Now two and two. [Music] Ground ball left side. Could be two over to low. That’s out number one. And a run comes in to score. And now the DH Addison Barkered hitter Addison Barker. [Applause] in there at the knees. 0 and one. Runner at second here. One gone. [Applause] Swanging a grounder. Foul first base side. [Applause] stays alive. [Applause] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. [Applause] Got him looking out number two. Well, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Next to hit, Davis Schneider. Ball one there. Two outs and one in scoring position. And that one is in the dirt. ball two. There are lots of pitches thrown in this first inning. It’s kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching, but you know what? It’s still early enough. He can settle in. He can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Well, he got away with a mistake right there. a curveball that backed up a little bit, stayed high in the zone. He won’t want to throw that one again. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. A run on two hits and they leave one. We move to the second in Toronto. The Red Sox four and the Blue Jays won. All set for the start of the inning. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Connor Wong. First pitch misses and another ball. Two balls. No. [Music] Pitch misses and that’s ball three. And there’s the automatic. [Applause] [Music] That one misses. So a lead off walk. Oh, that’s a really good take right there. And that’s just mentally prepared, knowing that if it’s not on a TE, you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with. Not easy to lay off, but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance. Late swing, fouled to the left. Ruer at first with no outs here. Next pitch is downstairs. James Kingsley, our played umpire, consistent and maybe a little generous on the edges. Yeah, Boo. He’ll give a little bit on the edges like you said, but from what I’ve seen, he usually does that when a pitcher is just commanding those parts of the strike zone and essentially they’ve earned it. The umpire rolls with him. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. One down. Now batting shortstop Trevor Story. Here’s Trevor Story. Now he’s already homered here in this one. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. On the ground of first, could be two to second. There’s one relay to Guerrero in time. Inning ending double play. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Down now to the bottom of the second. The Red Sox four and the Blue Jays won. Back now in Toronto. Bottom half of number two. And now Nathan Lucas. Nathan Lucas. Mats back to work. and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them right through there for a strike. Hugan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump. And defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle. You can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Over to low seven and a quick out number one Ernie Clement. Now it’s going to be Ernie Clement. [Applause] Here’s the swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field. So a man aboard now with one away. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that, but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. [Applause] Andres Jimenez now at the plate as he swings through strike one [Music] and a foul ball. man at first, one away. [Music] Inside and the count is one and two. [Music] The shorts stop takes the ball. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Little bit low and now three and two in the air out to center. Raphaela on the move makes the grab after a long run. Two away now. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. So, a man aboard and now the switch in and catcher Tyler Heinaman. That one misses and that’s ball one. [Music] to third. Bregman out number three. So, one hit is all they get. We head on down to the top of the third. The Red Sox four and the Blue Jays won. New inning getting started. Now it’s Alex Bregman. Alex Bregman. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. You know, these Red Sox doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming and that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. Lifted in the air right field and there’s one down. [Applause] Now batting the designated hitter Masataka. Now it’s the DH. Masataka Yoshida doubled in his first AB. And that one wrapped foul. One out. Base is empty. [Music] Hit on the ground to short. fires over to Guerrero and there are two outs. Now batting second base Romy Gonzalez. Two outs. Base is empty. Romy Gonzalez now at the plate. RBI single his last time up. He was late there. Strike one. [Music] [Applause] [Music] makes the sliding stop over to first and that’s a great play for the out. Nothing doing for Boston but they lead it four to one. And we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning. And the batter is George Springer. George Springer. MVP. And that’s outside. [Music] Next offering is fouled back. Hard ground ball base knock and the leadoff man aboard wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So up next, Dalton Vo in the dirt. The lefty, the one squirts away a little bit. Snap throw to first and Springer’s in there safely. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. The one, two, strike three. Got him looking on the change up. Now batting. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. Now snap throw to first and Springer’s in there safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy. So you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap. Just missed. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. One and two. Two strikes. Let’s go. Come on Toronto. You can do it. This guy’s seen two change ups in a row. Could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here. And now two and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. That one misses and it’s a full count. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Hard grounder into the outfield for a nod. They get it in quickly. So, first and second now, one out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Addison Barger next up for the Blue Jays. Struck out looking his first time. That one finds the zone and that is strike one. Runners at first and second with one gone here in the last half of the third. Ground ball right side could be two. wide throw and it cuts away. Here comes Springer around third. He’ll score. A potential double play ball hit to first is probably the toughest one to execute cleanly. That first baseman, he’s got a very tough throwing lane to deal with because of the runner headed to second base and a lot of times guys try to throw over or around the runner which can really mess up a throw like that. Still definitely an error though. Here’s the left fielder, Davis Schneider. Tap foul at the plate. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Number 71, the rookie left-hander, appears to be getting going. Number 70 getting cranked up as well. Two on, one out. And a count one and two [Music] [Applause] [Music] on the ground. And it goes just foul. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] And there’s a ball in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. Nathan Lucas in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] [Music] And that’ll load the bases. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walk the hitter. You got to challenge the guy with the fast. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Steven Mats out of the game and he leaves with the bases loaded. So, he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching for pitching change here number 71. Really tough spot to come into out of the bullpen. Bases loaded with multiple outs to get in a tight ball game. A lot can happen right here. Nathan Lucas next up for the Blue Jays. Golden opportunity right here. [Applause] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. [Applause] And that one is inside ball one. Curve ball kind of backed up on him there. I think it just slid out of the hand a little bit too soon. [Applause] just missed. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. [Applause] Got the bat going too soon and strike two. gonna really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Double play ball to second over to Story for one. And that’s quick work out of the pen. One batter, two outs, inning over. Well, the second base made that one look easy. Great feed to the shortstop. Shortstop completes the play. They get out of a jam and they end the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Nathaniel Low. Blue J. Let’s go. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Fouled off left side [Music] to the right side. [Applause] Guerrero the toss to first and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off man. The center fielder Sidan Raphaela. Now here is Sidan Raphaela doubled his first time. Yeah baby that one finds the corner. Strike one. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. [Music] lifted in the air down the left side. Clement drops into the glove. Two away. Up next for the Red Sox, right fielder Willard Abrau. Two down, base is empty. Willard Abrau up next for the Red Sox. Grounded out his first time. Abrau 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela. Red Sox by two. [Applause] And the pitch is outside. Ball one. swing and a miss and that’s strikeout number 100 on the year. Red Sox go down one, two, three, but they still lead this one four-2. Back here at Rogers Center. Now the third base, Ernie Clemen. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. This one in the air and there’s one away. Now batting shorts stop Andre Jimenez. Here’s Andre Jimenez. Fly to center his first time. That one fouled off. trying to get him to chase on the change up that time. [Applause] And that one missing low fought off foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up on the ground right side. Sends it to first. Already two gone here in the home fourth. Now batting catcher Tyler Heinaman. Tyler Heinaman next up for the Blue Jays. Grounded out his first time up. He swings and fouls one off. That’s down and in. You want to be patient here. Try to work a walk if you can. You’ve got a big power bat behind you in the on deck circle and with two outs, one swing can put you right back in this ball game. Swing and a miss. It’s a ball and two strikes. Good pitch right there. Tied him up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. Out of the ground to third. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s safe. You know, two out errors are kind of like two out walks and sometimes even worse. You know, you think you’re out of the inning, but all of a sudden, you got another out to get, and the offense has a great opportunity they’re looking to take advantage of and make you pay for. Here’s George Springer. [Music] Just missed. [Applause] Toronto the 10 and another ball. Red Sox leading it by two. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. I think he was sitting off speed right there because he just let the fast ball go by. That one missed. Was good pitch there. Billy had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Two outs on the corner for a strike. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. drilled out towards left center field. That one back out of here. His second home run of the series. And he ties it up. It’s 44. The count was full, but he was ready to swing it. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. bit on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. Now the batter now Dalton Bar one for two up and in. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Tied at four. Line to left and that’s a fair ball. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. So runner at second, two down. Vlatty Jr. stepping to the dish now [Applause] outside with a breaking ball. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Swing and a miss and a count. One and one. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and fouled off. [Applause] in the dirt. Blocked and the runner holds. [Applause] Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] Man on second, two down. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Baro headed for the plate now. A long throw home. Not in time. He’s safe at the plane. And it’s now 54. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Addison Barker will hit next. Hole for two in this one. [Applause] On the ground to first he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. ready now for the fifth inning. And now the catcher comes up to him, Conor Wong. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. You know, these Red Sox doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. One thing that really stands out to me is how they’ve only struck out one time. That’s good discipline right there. And on top of it, they’re producing more than a hit per inning. One strike. Line drive. Rip down the left side towards the left field corner around first. Digging for two. Throws to second. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. ripped it down the line. Nice job of standing his mechanics. [Applause] Now batting Jiren Durant, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. That one finds the corner. Strike one. All those numbers mean this offense is really making the defense work by just putting the ball into play. Anything can happen at that point. Movement in the bullpen. Trey Savage preparing to come on if needed. Nance a hard throwing right-hander up as well. [Music] [Applause] [Music] man at second. And that one a little below the knees now. Two balls in a strike. And there’s a ball. Well, you got to give him credit out there on the M. This outing started off a little shaky, but he’s found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start. Kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher. And ball four to a board. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 56 gives way got them some innings, but they didn’t come easy. New pitcher coming on. And we’ll be back after a quick break. Now pitching. The pitcher on here Trey Yavage. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Here’s Trevor Story. He’s already homered in this game. And that misses and that is ball one. And that is out of play. First and second here. No outs. [Music] [Applause] Outside corner. There’s a strike. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. to third. Might be two. Clement to second on the first double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Now that is third baseman, Alex Bregman. [Applause] Now it’s Alex Bregman. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That’s in there. Going along. So after the double play, he’s trying to pick up his teammate and tie this game. That one is absolutely belted. Pulls it in on the warning track. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Garrick Crochet. Should be a good first match up for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. And now for the Jays. Davis. For the Jays, left fielder Davis Schneider. [Music] In there for a strike at the top of the zone. Well, these Jays really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Now batting the right fielder, Nathan Lucas. And next for Toronto, Nathan Lucas. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. That’s down and in. [Applause] That one close. Rule the ball and it’s three and0. That one called just inside I think and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though, but he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Three 0 down and there’s the automatic. [Music] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. Well, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Didn’t offer it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Met first. So up next for Toronto, Ernie Clement. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. Stunt. When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner. Got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat. That’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the All-Star game and have a gold glove, if not a platinum glove. So, what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet. Does he have good feet? Is he able to quickly react? And when you have good feet, you’ve got soft hands, and soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy. Yeah, that’s outside. Going to count one and two. struck him out swinging and his season of strikeouts continues with number 250. He came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time little anxious Andres Jimenez digs in now at 96 that pitch is in for a strike. swings through that one for strike two. No balls. Two strikes. Hot shot to third. They get the force. That is the inning. One left for Toronto as they hold on to a 5-4 lead. Back now in Toronto. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. And now here is Masataka Yoshida. [Applause] Yavage back to work. Not giving him a pitch to hit there isn’t a bad thing. He’s dealing with a great first pitch hitter up there. Toronto’s bullpen with some action. Louisie Varand, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Little afander also throwing. And the one just missed. [Music] That’s off the mark and now 3 and 0. Almost feel like he’s frustrated a little bit. He wants to be challenged. Romy Gonzalez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. That one finds the zone and it’s three and one. Swinging a foul out of play. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Up the middle on the run. Throw to first and very nicely done for the out. Romy Gonzalez up next for the Red Sox. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. And that’s off the outside edge. Ball one. right through there for a strike [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] outside. And that’s outside of this ball four and he’s on base. Well, that right there could end up being a big walk in this game. He’s certainly a threat on the bases, especially with them looking to tie this thing up. Here’s Nathaniel Low. [Applause] Y Savage throws to first and he’s back in easily. [Applause] Swung on. Belted and that is a foul ball. Some real good life going through the zone on that one. just missed with the tying run on at first and we’re the top half of the six [Applause] the kick and the pitch. Runner goes strike in there. Throw to second and great jump and the tying run is now in scoring position. [Music] [Applause] [Music] The one two [Applause] base hit. Throw comes into third and they’re at the corners with only one out. Well, that may end up being an at we go back to later on when this game is over. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. Tying runs now just 90 ft away. Just got to be wary of that double play, though. That would strand him in the inning. Now a chance for Son Raphaela. [Applause] And the sweeper misses for a ball at the dish. Looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. One, two. Now spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, this is where the team aspect really comes into play on the offensive side of the game, right? I mean, missed opportunity to tie it up with the runner at third, one out, couldn’t put the ball in play. So, now it’s time to pick him up. And that’s where good teams they go to. They operate on this level of next man up. That mentality is what causes them to win series, get into the postseason. That helps keep the energy and morale high in the dugout. A Brau in the box now. Takes strike one. [Music] [Applause] Swing a pop off in foul ground. He’s under it, squeezes it, and that’s the third out. So they strand a pair. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the six. It’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. [Applause] Bottom of the sixth inning. Here’s the catcher, Tyler Heinman. Tyler Heinman. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. One’s the count. And that one is downstairs. And the count even one and one. There’s the strike. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. missed with a change up and the count is two and two. That one just misses. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. [Applause] [Music] Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. He was all over that one. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. [Applause] FPV [Applause] fouled off down the right side. Little tardy on that fast ball. He’s going to have to get it going a little quicker. Get that front foot down. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. Yeah, foul ball. Still a one and two count. Here’s a high chopper and that one handled. Tosses to first. One away. Bottom of the six. Now batting the center fielder Dalton Baro. And now for the Jays. Dalton Vo. Well, the way these two teams have battled in this game, you know you need more. Got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win. And there’s a foul ball. Man at second in the air left side. Durant settles underneath it and there are two down. And now the first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. intentional walk here with two out. They set up a force at any base to end the inning. Well, it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter, but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot. He’s just too dangerous at the plate right now. And there’s a base open, so it gives you options defensively to get an out. Barger in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Right through there for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Good eye right there. Too close for me, partner, to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons, he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Two on, two outs. Struck him out looking. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Louis Vland. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Joel stepping in from Boston Conor Wonger Connor Wong. [Applause] And that’s a little bit high. One and0. And that one fouled off [Music] looking to get the tying run on base. And that one is inside. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away out in front. and foul to the left side. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. One away. Up next for the Red Sox, left Jiren Durant up next for the Red Sox. Var 27 years old and they traded for him earlier this year. Yeah, there’s the strike trying to keep good speed off the bases outside low and now it’s even one and one. [Music] hit hard on the ground to short throws to first in time. Well, we talked about how the ball is coming out of the pitcher’s hand, the way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. your story now. [Applause] That clips the zone. Strike one. [Applause] There’s the strike. [Applause] Foul ball. Still 0 and2 [Applause] a shorts stop takes a ball. That’s way outside and the count’s even at two. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked and the tying run is on base. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what, he earned that ball. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Louisie Varla done for the night and he leaves in a one-run game. New pitcher coming on. We’ll be back in a minute. Now pitching Brendan Little on a pitch out of the pen here and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits period. Two outs, runner at first. And next for the Red Sox, Alex Bregman. Step off throw to first. Story back in on a dive. Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up. Outside and it’s one and0. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So, if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit. But, you got to stay within yourself. Two outs. Check swing and he went and it’s a ball to strike. Line drive base hit right field. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy. Didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep. Took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Now a huge at bat in this game coming up at the plate. Masataka Yoshida that’s in there. [Applause] Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go ahead runs are aboard. [Applause] And now the count is even. [Applause] on the ground right side. Springer in plenty of time to first that ends the frame. So the Jay’s pen does its job nicely there midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Garrett Whitlock. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. One of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Well, one game now at the plate, Davis Schneider, Davis Schneider. And that is downstairs. Ball one. Action in the pen down there. Zack Kelly, the young right-hander up and throwing. Wilson getting loose as well. The one and another ball. Pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there. Started on the edge of the plate with the spin. You know, it’s going to finish well off the plate. The two is in for a strike. Two balls, one strike. Just missed. [Music] [Applause] [Music] That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he’s showing some good patience in this one. It’s the second time he’s taken ball four. Lucas, man at first, nobody out. And now it’s going to be Nathan Lucas. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. That’s outside and the count is 2 and 0. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. gets the call and it’s two and one. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] And it remains two and two to short. It could be two. There’s one. It’s a double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. And next for Toronto, Ernie Clement, one for three and first offering is fouled off. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the seventh. Headed towards the corner. Abrau makes the grab and that is that. So, no runs in the inning despite the leadoff walk. And that does it. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Blue Jays five and the Red Sox four. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eight. Tommy Nance. He last pitched two days ago. And stepping in from Boston, Romy Gonzalez. Romy. Now, this guy, a player that if he gets on base, has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths [Applause] right through there for a strike. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. [Applause] Ripped on a line. can’t get there. Should be extra bases. And now the tying run is into scoring position. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. And now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit. So, the tying run in scoring position now. And here’s the first baseman, Nathaniel Low. And that’s downstairs and outside. Now swinging a chopper fires over to Guerrero. First out in the top of the eighth. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Stepping in for Boston, Sidon Raphaela. Don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base. And that drops in for a strike [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and a base hit right there. The run scores from third and it’s an RBI single tie game here in the eighth. Just a huge bat right there. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Go ahead run on base. And next for the Red Sox, Willard Abrau. Ball one, no strikes. [Music] [Applause] Check on the runner and he dives back in safely [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to the right side and it finds its way through for a hit. Throw comes into third. save and the goal ahead runs at third. Back to back base hits. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. Really important at bat coming up now. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Tommy Nance is done and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching out of the bullpen for the Jays, Sir Anthony Dominguez. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. Looks like we’ve got a substitution at first. Pinch running for Boston. David Hamilton. David Hamilton. Two on, one out. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Connor Wong. Ground ball left side. Could be two quickly to second for one. Relay to Guerrero in time. Inning ending double play, but the RBI single pushes across a run. All even at five a piece. Major League Baseball is on the show. Back now, new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth, Zack Kelly. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. So coming into the game now on defense, number 40. He takes over and right. So they’re making a move for a bat off the bench. Alejandro Kirk, a critical at bat in this game for him. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. [Applause] in the air to left center. Raphaela sizes this one up, calls it in, and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Tyler Heinman. Now a catcher up to hit Tyler Heinaman. Well, both sides equally as strong, so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. Falloff foul. activity in the bullpen. Chris Murphy, the left-handed reliever, appears to be getting loose. All tied up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning in the air left field. Durant on his way over and there are two outs. now batting second base and it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate and it may be a long shot but a triple here will give him the cycle close but called a ball and that’s ball one. Well, a mistake right here could untie this ball game. If you’re the pitcher out there, you just want to be a little more cautious. [Applause] Two outs. Base is empty [Music] and that one ripped into right and that’s a fair ball. Makes the turn and heads for second. in with a double and a go-ahad runs at second with two out and his hot hitting continues. They kept him in the yard that time, but all he’s doing now is passing the baton and everything seems to get started around this guy. So, the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Dalton Baro next up for the Blue Jays. And that’s outside ball one. [Music] [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Two down. Go ahead. Run in scoring position. Rip towards third. Bregman to first. And we stay tied as the inning ends. One hit, one left. Ninth inning coming up. We’re all tied up 55. Now into the game. Miles Straw. He’s in at shortstop. Now playing shortstop. Number three. Back to the top of the order. Jiren Durant getting ready to hit. Known for his late heroics. It’s good speed at the top of the order here. You want to get it on. See if you can get a stolen base. Maybe get around the bases and pick up a run. Late swing. Fouled to the left. [Music] [Applause] [Music] That one to first. Guerrero takes it to the bag and the leadoff man retired here in the ninth. And stepping in for Boston, Trevor Story. [Music] Down and away for ball one. Base is empty, one away here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] And that one fouled off. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. One down, base is empty and a count. One and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. Oh, you got to be pretty quick with the bat speed these days. So many guys throwing in the upper 90s and you see the velocity on that one. Just tough to catch up to. I mean, guys are coming in and they’re going max effort. They’re not looking to go a long distance. They want to get as many strikeouts as they possibly can. And now Alex Bregman. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Applause] Fouled off. He was late. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. That one fouled off. [Applause] And he couldn’t hold back. He’s run up on strikes. So they go quietly there. Hard to the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. We’re all tied up 55. And welcome back to the ballpark. All set for the bottom of the ninth. And here is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Kelly back to work. Swaying and a miss. It’s 0 and one. Movement in the bullpen. Araldis Chapman appears to be getting loose. Yo, one [Applause] in the air. Right field has a beat on it. And there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Addison. Now it’s the Toronto designated hitter Addison Barger. 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. swing and a tapper and that’s a foul ball. And that one ripped to left and there’s a hit. I’m sure that feels pretty good after going hitless in this one so far. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. Here in the bottom of the ninth, one out. Davis Schneider the next to hit. Misses off the play and it’s one and0. Way high. One down. Winning run on first. [Applause] That one missed. Nathan Lucas in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Swang and a miss and it’s three and two with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Outside corner. Got him looking. Unafraid to throw it right there. That’s trusting your stump. Just one out away from getting out of a huge Lucas. So digging in, Nathan Lucas 0 for three in this one. Popped up to the left into foul ground. He’s under it. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. So they can’t come up with the winning run. And that means we’ll have to go a little longer here tonight to find a winner. We’re all tied up 55 now. Pitching. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer Jimmy Hoffman. And something to be aware of the long ball has been a little bit of a problem. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position here. Now the Red Sox DH Masataka Yoshida one for four with a double. [Applause] And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. Eddie chases that one below the zone. He’s gone off speed. He needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the zone and just misses with that one. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Just misses there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. and he hits a ground ball right side, fires over to Guerrero and they get the lead off man in the 10th. Not a bad outcome in that spot. The runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run. It’s not a hit, but at the end of the day, it’s a good at bat, especially when you’re playing extra innings. [Applause] Good solids in the box now. takes strike one. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahehead run to score if the ball’s put in play. Next pitch is outside. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Braden Fiser up and loosening in the pen. swinging a foul out of play. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. [Applause] [Music] One and two here. Fights it off. You’ll see another that’s off the inside corner and it’s two and two. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. Oh, that’s a huge strike out right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the fullcourt press and he got the swing and miss. Keeps this one tied. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. And now the first baseman, Nathaniel Low. Swing and a high-fly ball to left. Schneider sizing this one up. Makes the grab and that’s the third out. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. Now pitching four back here at extras and a new pitcher on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Justin Wilson. Big swing and miss stuff right here. And now for the Jays, Ernie Clement. Listen, there’s absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here. You nibble, you see if he’ll expand his zone, but don’t give him anything to hit. If you walk him, not a big deal. You have a double play opportunity set up. At bat can be a little bit of a dance. Strike one here, but few more pitches. We’ll see how it turns out. And at second [Applause] and that’s off the inside edge. Now two balls in a strike. And there’s a ball played umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. Miles Straw in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] [Applause] And that’s fouled off. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full cow. Ball four. He walked in and that’ll keep the line moving. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. very gritty making at second base. Coming in as the pinch runner, Joey Loido. He’s a potential winning run, so they’re hoping he can score in a base hit. And here is Miles Straw in there and it’s 0 and one [Applause] is short. story save. He beats it. Oh, that bat had a lot riding on it. Certainly a pivotal swing of the bat in this ball game. A bunch of chances now to send those fans home happy. It’s going to take a magic trick to extend this game with no outs and the winning run at third. And now Tyler Heinman. That one finds the zone. And that’s strike one. Nobody out. The winning run 90 ft away. Ripped but it curls. Foul. They need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup something. But you got to make some pitches. My drive. That’s a base hit. In comes the winning run and the Blue Jays walk it off in extra innings. So exciting to see a team walk it off. Not so much fun if you’re on the other side, but what a great way to win. This team is celebrating and this win is welld deserved. [Applause] 65 the final here today. A oneun extra inning win for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
