  1. He probably had practice when he was a brick salesman. I imagine this is the only way to stop people and talk about bricks.

  2. A lot of practice at Arkansas when he just doing kickoffs, I’m sure. It’s like riding a bike!

  3. Somewhere there is a Packers fan getting their panties all bunched up by Bates’ tackle height.

  4. If you are getting paid millions of dollars to play a sport which just about every single play ends with a tackle it’s probably beneficial to know how to tackle.

  5. From front office to kicker. They all got that dawg in them. Just look at Brad Holmes in the post game locker room videos, he hyped as hell.

  6. This is the most underrated play of the game, in my opinion. Even if just for vibes, stopping a kick return for a TD is a big deal.

  7. Playing defense in soccer probably gave him some pent up rage and making tackles is just his excuse to exercise it

  8. Remember that onside kick attempt last year where he kicked it straight down the field at a single guy and then tried to clock him? Didn’t work but was a great effort.

  9. This is because I helped with his wedding registry. He was thinking *I can’t let down that guy who got me those bowls.*

  10. Don’t tell Jeremy Reisman at Pride of Detroit. His response to this in the latest podcast was “he still had a kickoff go out of bounds”

  11. Atleast he didn’t get trucked trying to make a play. Like Jordan Love did. When he threw that interception against the Browns.. haha

  12. So we’ve had Bobby Boucher on our team this whole time and he’s just been kicking field goals?

  13. People can say they don’t know how to draft, but we sure know how to scout.

Bates, Muhammad were stand outs. They also inspire something look at players like Monty compared to when he was on the Bears.

  14. Where are the NFC North foes saying he’s a dirty player for hitting low like Kerb Jo???

  15. “I just remembered ‘kneecaps, kneecaps, kneecaps.’ from every single thing we talk about. I just forgot the biting part.” – Bates.

  16. Remember him diving for that onside kick against Buffalo? He briefly had the ball there, iirc.

People make fun of the emphasis on “culture,” but Bates is a prime example of why it’s so important to get guys to buy into it. DCs’ influence can not be overstated.

  17. I didn’t start playing football until high school and didn’t get great coaching. This is how I would hit every single time, and boy did it make everybody mad lol
