🔴LIVE 🔴St Louis Cardinals vs San Francisco Giants /September 24/ Envivo TV /MLB THE SHOW 25
baseball on the show. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals taking on the San Francisco Giants. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about ready to go. And today’s starting pitcher, Justin Verlander. And as usual with him singing, I think we can expect plenty of strikeouts. Yeah, Boogie’s racked up over 3,000 strikeouts in his career, so expect to see more of the same in this one. All right, ready to get underway. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Lars Nbar, way outside. And we are underway here in San Francisco. Next offering is in for a strike. Boo. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. Nbar tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. Yes, he did. That’s a swing according to Eric Summerskill. That one missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Goes down looking. Well, he froze him with a great fast ball right on the corner. It’s kind of like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called. Third strike. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. And that’s in there for strike one. One out. Base is empty. cut on and lifted in the air. They got it for out number two. Now we take a check of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustment. So if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Alec Burlson stands in now and watches strike one. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. And that extends the inning. Batting fourth, third base Nolan Aronado. So now it’s Dolan Aronado. Here we go. And that misses ball one. Burlson off of first with two away. Right through there for a strike. Check swing and he went now one and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. Let’s go Giants. And the right great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion. So something in the gap should definitely score it. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Grinding AB right here. About to see pitch number 10. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Got him looking. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. So, one left for the Cardinals. And now we’ll see what the Giants can do. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. And we’re back. And towing the slab in this one, Michael McGrevy. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trusted, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now the left fielder Elliot Ramos and there’s the strike. Just missed. [Applause] rips that one to right. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases into second easily with a lead off double. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling when you connect and it jumps off your bat like that. You’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. [Applause] And here is DeS. It’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate under the Mendoza line so far this month. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. [Applause] And a strike to DeS. No outs. Runner on second. [Music] [Applause] Out to short to Jay-Z. Tosses to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. batting third. Now, we take a peek at the Giants lineup. They’re facing a guy today who is a strikethrower. Doesn’t issue a lot of walks. So, they’re going to have to work hard to generate base runners. And when you’ve got a strikethrower like this guy on the mound, you can’t be overly patient as a hitter because the umpire is generally going to give him the benefit of the doubt. So, you got to go up there, understand what’s in his repertoire, be aggressive in what you can handle. And you get three swings. Why not take all three of them? With his control and command, he’s going to be in the strike zone on the ground just for a base hit. Coming home, he’ll score easily and it’s an RBI single and it’s one- nothing. Man, he just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics. One down. Here’s Matt Chapman. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Here comes the one line drive and that should be extra bases. Adamus around third. The relay not in time. He’s safe at the plate and they take a two-run lead. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. A well-deserved double on a great swing. Got everything going on time. He stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask. And here’s the first baseman, Bryce Eldridge. Ball one and a pitch inside. Still only one out here in the inning. center field. Scott under it. Two away. Casey Schmidt, the next Giant to hit, been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Fast ball in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Well, I know they’ve gotten out to an early lead, but you don’t want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs. Still lock in with a quality at bat. Drive in that run. You may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game. Chapman stands at second with two gone. [Applause] And that one upstairs. Ball one. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. That’s a ball in the dirt. Blocked. Two outs and one in scoring position. To the right side and it’s off the bag. bare hands it. Tough play. Can’t complete the play despite a great effort. So, it’s runners at the corners. Well, from the time you’re a little leager, you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base regardless of how you hit it. And he didn’t make great contact, but the effort was there. And he earns the base hit. Patrick Bailey stands in with two away as he takes a ball. Let’s go. The one could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. [Music] This one in the air. Burlson settles under this one. He’s got it. And that’s the inning. So, it’s two runs on four hits, no errors, and a couple left on. We head to the second from San Francisco. It’s the Giants two and the Cardinals nothing. All set for the start of the inning. And now it’s going to be Thomas Sajay Burlander back to work. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. And a swing and a miss. Jack K is his third of the game. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. Pedro Pahes next up for the Cardinals. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. Pahes goes 5 feet 11 in 26 years old and he was born in Venezuela. Come on. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Now he’ll turn for second. The throw in in there. Just beat the tag. It’s a double. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. And up next for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. That pitch clips the outside corner. 0 and one. [Music] All right. Come on. Yeah, that skips in there. Off the mark there and it’s two and one. Swinging a ground ball. Chapman over to first in time and two away now. Batting eight second Jose Fine. And now Jose Fairmine. Get out of here. And a foul ball. [Music] Fouled off. He was late. That’s off the inside corner. One and two to count. Runner at second. Two down here in the top of the second. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. Now to the bottom of the second. It’s the Giants two and the Cardinals nothing. back here at Oracle Park. Now, Harrar and Carnosionielder [Music] and Ball one there. Singi wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff with the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly though. Gets the strike. That was the sweeper. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and one away. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Drew Gilbert batting with one down, takes the strike. lifted in the air down the left side to Jay-Z. Hauls it in for the out. Up next for the Giants leftielder Elliot Ramos. So the lineup flips over. Here’s Elliot Ramos. Doubled his first time up. in the air to left center. Scott turns to the right on the move. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out and that ends the inning. Three up, three down for him there. We play two full. It’s the Giants two and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Onto the third inning. And stepping in is the speedy Victor Scott. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Gilbert has this one sized up and puts the squeeze on that one. One away. Now batting left fielder Lars Newbar back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals let off the game with a strikeout just off the inside edge. Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] That one is absolutely belted way back there onto the track and he makes the catch. Now back. Two out. Space is empty. Ivon Herrera getting ready to hit in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. And Carnacion makes the catch and that’ll do it. back here in San Francisco. And the batter now, Raphael Deitter, Raphael De. Check swing called stride. 0 and one. MVP. MVP. There’s a swing and a drive. And in one hops the wall. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That’s a good sound coming off the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that’s one of those swings where you just don’t even feel the ball hit the barrel. That’s a pure stroke. Willie Thomas stands in, singled and drove in a run his first time through. The shorts stop takes a ball. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. fought off foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. The 1-1 is fouled off. Runner at second. Nobody out. In the dirt, but kept close. man at second. Fouls it back with two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. And it remains two and two. [Music] Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Well, having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle. Headed towards the corner and a foul ball. [Applause] Here’s the 2-2. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the last half of the third. Still two and two after the foul ball. And there’s a ball. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. [Music] That’s to third. Aronado to first in time and they get a Damas for the out. Now batting third base and here is Matt Chapman doubled in his first AB. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field outside. Two balls, two strikes [Music] on the ground. And that’s just foul. [Music] Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Stays alive. Here we go. Look out. And it hit him. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. And digging in for San Francisco, Bryce Eldridge. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. DeS over at second. Chapman at first. One gone. Hit softly on the ground to third. There’s one. over to first safe. [Applause] And up next for San Francisco, Casey Schmidt reached on an infield single his first time. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get Francisco and the one. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. And that’s in for a strike and the count one and two. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Two left on. Three innings complete. It’s the Giants two and the Cardinals nothing. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Alec Burlson. Come on now. First offering misses badly for ball one. You know, these cards as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Just missed. At 96. That pitch is in for a strike. looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. [Applause] Three and two. Payoff pitch. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk that could jumpst start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one. Don’t want to wake a team up with a free pass. Here’s Nolan Aronado. went down on strikes his first time through. You have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches, even in an O count. He loves going after the off speed stuff and he’s really good at hitting it. That one fouled hard the other way. [Music] And one runner on the go. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Get him down. Fights it off. He’ll see another runner at first with no outs here. him out. [Music] Next offering upstairs swing and a miss. Struck him out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Next offering is in for a strike. man at first, one away. Next offering is downstairs. Good eye right there. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Set him down. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. [Applause] Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. Doubled his first time. Check swing called. Strike. Strike one. Come on, Giants. And a foul ball. Two outs. And they’ll do it again. Good eye in that spot. Out to short Adamus the throw to first and he has thrown four shut out innings. The Cards leave one and they’re down two nothing. back here at Oracle Park. Bottom of the fourth and now the switch in and catcher Patrick Bailey. And that one clips the corner. All these Giants showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well. Out towards right center field. Walker pulls it in and there’s one away. Still relatively early, but with a pair of runs already on the board, the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game. And up next for the Giants, Herrarion. He was a strikeout victim his first time. That missed. That’s a ball. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Swang at a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and that one’s gone into the bleachers. He circles the bases. Third home run of the season and they add to their lead. It’s 3 nothing. [Applause] A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. So, one out, nobody on. Stepping in, Drew Gilbert. And that one sliced foul. Next offering is in for a strike. Gets a piece and stays alive. out towards right center. That’s well struck. This one could be trouble and that’s going to roll to the wall. Round second digging for third and he’s got himself a triple. Everything came together for him. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. So the batting order turns over. Elliot Ramos, the next Giant to hit. One for two. Just missed. Gilbert stands at third with one gone in the inning. [Music] [Applause] on the ground to short to Jay-Z. Now a jump throw and it beats him. What a play, [Applause] man. Chris, a jump throw like that is certainly worthy of the Stackcast treatment. Let’s see what the numbers have to say about it. Yeah, these are some favorable numbers, Boo. This is the type of play that showcases his arm strength. I mean, he made it look easy, but I promise you that’s not a throw every shortstop can make, especially with that much behind it. And it’s Raphael Des in the box. Fast ball for a strike. That one blasted deep to right. Walker going back, pulls it in on the warning track. So they get two runs on two hits. One of them left the yard. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Giants four and the Cardinals nothing. We go to the top of the fifth now. Up for St. Louis, Jordan Walker. Walker. Walker measures 6 feet 6 in, 22 years old, a former first round pick in 2020. You know, these Cardinals just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments. They’ve been fooled quite a bit today. And ball one. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. [Music] A massive home run. It’s his sixth home run of the season. And they cut into the lead. It’s 4-1. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Well, I’m sure there’s a big grin on his face right now. Boo. He’s probably had some of those that didn’t stay fair, but off the bat it looked like he was going to foul. Was able to keep it in there. Tucked it nicely and he gets the jog around the bases. Good for him. And now here is Jose Fairmine. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point and he hits a ground ball right side and that hits off the base. Well, anything can happen once the ball deflects off the base. Do you get a good bounce or bad bounce? Your guess is as good as mine. So, a man aboard. Here’s the center fielder, Victor Scott. That’s a strike. 01. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. The one-1 is fouled off. The one two fouled off and they’ll do it again. Strike him out. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. One on. Nobody out. A run in. And we’re in the top of the fifth. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Oh, there’s a pitch we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants. cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. So digging in, Lars Nar for two in this one. That’s in for a strike. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Verlander moved to first and he’s back safely. The next offering misses and it’s a ball and a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Trevor McDonald getting loose out there. Gage getting cranked up as well. And that’s in there at the knees for a strike. Here comes the pitch. Runner breaks for second. There’s a ball. Throw. Safe. man at second. Swanging a ball popped in the air out to shallow center. Schmid makes the play and there’s two down. Now batting the designated hitter, Ivon Herrera. Ivon Herrera will hit next. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Now, this is in the air down the line and that’s a foul ball. and that one upstairs. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field in the dirt. Up and in. And now it’s three and two. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Giants four and the Cardinals one. back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound. Sunonny Gray still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. 345 do up for the home team. Digging in, Willie Adamis singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two and that’s a little high. Well, these Giants digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher hand really well. There’s the strike. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. And that’s in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too, too. He’s already seen the curveball couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Francisco. That’s way outside and that’s ball three. Clearly didn’t come out of his hand the right way. Left that curveball way up. Caught him looking for the K. Now Matt Chapman at the plate. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list. Stud. When you look at players like this, you play that hot corner. Got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat. That’s the kind of guy that every year you expect him to be in the All-Star game and have a gold glove, if not a platinum glove. That’s a laser base hit. wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. One gone, runner at first. Bryce Eldridge the next Giant to hit. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. So, what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite? Well, Boo, one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet. Does he have good feet? Is he able to quickly react? And when you have good feet, you’ve got soft hands. And soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. [Music] That one ripped right center field and it looks like trouble and that’s going to roll to the wall. Chapman headed home. He will score. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. I love the hustle out of the box, man. He drove that baseball and he was thinking triple right away. One down, runner at third. Here’s the second baseman, Casey Schmidt. All right. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Francisco. [Applause] Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. In comes the runner from third. It’s an RBI single. It’s 6-1. Now the catcher up to hit. Patrick Bailey. That one catches the corner for a strike. [Applause] Sunny Gray checks on the runner and he dives back in safely. Schmidt leads off first with one away. Strike two. You tie a guy up like that, you’re feeling like you are in command. [Applause] Liner base hit. Quick throw back in. Lead runner holds it second with one gone. back against the wall with two strikes but found a way. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. Ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle, not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. Now it’s going to be Harrar and Kosion. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] fly ball to right. Walker pulls that one down. Two away now. So, first and second with two outs. And now the center fielder, Drew Gilbert. There’s the strike. [Applause] And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Swing and a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Coming home, he’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 71. Good two- strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. That’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shorts stop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough. But right there, it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for the base hit. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Sunny Gray will depart and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Andre Palante. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Back to the top of the lineup now. It’s the Giants leadoff hitter, Elliot Ramos. And first offering is fouled off. Two on, two outs. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. That’s to third. The throw to first. Inning over and it could have been worse. They strike for three runs on five hits. No errors and a couple left on. We’re through five. It’s the Giants seven and the Cardinals won. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher number 77. And you know, bullpin guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game. So, we’ll see how sharp he is. Your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well. And now the first baseman, Alec Burlson. Come on. Outside. Action in the pen down there. A right-hander is up and throwing. Giants. The 10 count. Foul ball. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. That misses the zone and now it’s three and two. clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Now batting third base Nolan Aronado man at first. Here’s the third baseman, Nolan Aronado, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. All right, Giants and first offering is fouled off. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field and Carnacion settles under it and makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting shortstop Thomas Jay-Z. And now the shorts stop Thomas Sajay-Z lifted in the air right field and Carnos and there’s two down. Here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. Pedro PZ. And that drops in for a strike. Well, this looks like it’s going to be a wasted opportunities. Frustrating when you get the leadoff man on, but you can’t get him into scoring position. They’re going to need a big knock. Try to put something up on the board. That misses. Yeah, the count one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Just misses with that one. Giants inside. Ball three. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. Hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. That one down the line. And that’s a fair ball. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Turned on it nicely. Definitely a little out in front of the pitch, but he didn’t hook around it too much and was able to keep it fair down the line. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. At the plate, Jordan Walker and that’s outside. Burlson the lead runner at second. Pah at first. Two out of the inning. inside. Just missed. Two and0. [Music] That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Lifted in the air out to left. That’s right. Ramos makes the grab on the run. So, the Cards strand a couple. They’re down seven to one. Well, we go bottom six. Des now. lined and that’s a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. That play looks routine defensively, but with all of the little nooks, it can get real tricky down in the corner. Kept it to a long single. Nice defensive play. So, a man at first and here is Willie Adamus. Next offering popped in the air right field makes the catch and there’s one gone. One thing we hear a lot, Boo, is the outfield here at Oracle Park can really be challenging on fielders, especially at Triples Alley in right center. You’re going to need some rangy outfielders to cover all this ground. Now it’s Matt Chapman. [Music] And that misses ball one. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Jojo Romero, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Number 49 warming up as well. San Francisco. That’s in there and the count even at one. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Belly showed a lot of conviction with the fast ball there. Not just because of the velocity, but also the ability to command it on the inside part of the plate. The last thing you want to do with two strikes is just get too far in there and it gets away and hits the batter. So, when I see a two- strike fast ball bunch up a guy like that, it tells me there’s a lot of confidence in that pitch. Giants swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. Oh, great stop. Throws from the seat of his pants and they get the out. One left for San Francisco and they’re on top 7 to1. It’s a bit of a blowout now, which gives us a bit more freedom here in the booth. I’m not sure that’s a good thing. Singy, where do you stand on the wave? Well, the wave of star players in MLB or the wave around this ballpark. The wave around the ballpark? I think it’s a little outdated. I’m more of a Thunder Sticks guy. And that’s not outdated. In the air, right field, and Carnosion gets under it, nabs it, and there’s one down. Now batting the center, Victor Scott. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Victor Scott. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. There’s the strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. [Music] And it’s fouled away. Come on, Giants. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember, I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, Swing and a ball driven out to center. That one back onto the guard, netting it out of here. Home run. A gigantic blast. It’s 72. They wasted no time in that at bat. Swinging at the first pitch and he punished it. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Number 77 out of the game. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. Number 63 takes over on the mound. He last pitched two days ago. So now here’s the Cardinals designated hitter, Ivonne Herrera. 0 for three in this one. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. [Applause] That one fouled off. Swings and misses. And that is that. One scores in the inning coming on this solo home run. It’s 72. Back after this on the show. set for the last half of the seventh and digging in for San Francisco. Casey Schmidt Palante back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. Hard hit right side in plenty of time to first and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Now batting catcher Patrick. And now the catcher comes up to him. Patrick Bailey one for three. Giants in the air left field. Nbar makes the catch and a couple of quick outs. Now betting right fielder. Two down, base is empty. And up next for San Francisco, Herrarion. He’s already homerred here in this one. Giants. Right through there for a strike. And one. Now one and one. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. I mean, these pitchers really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. Two down, nobody on here near the bottom of the seventh. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Two down. Nobody on. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. Giants down in order, but they’re still on top seven to two. And welcome back to the ballpark. We’re in the top of the eighth and now Alec Burlson. Giants. Pitch is in there. Go and one. Action in the San Francisco bullpen. Kaiway 10 getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. [Music] 0 and two now as he swings through it. That one’s upstairs. ball one and misses inside. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. up the middle and that’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting third baseman Nolan Arnado comes in to take his cuts. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out and first offering is fouled off. [Music] San Francisco check swing called strike swing and a miss and he is down on strike. strikes for the third straight at bat. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. in a strike. [Music] That one’s in there. 0 and two. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And that one upstairs, ball one. on the ground to the left and it goes just fouled. San Francisco fights that one away. Still one and two on the inside corner for called strike three. Oh, tough night at the dish. Punching out for the third time right there. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate. A little unsure of his timing right now. Not picking up the spin and location of these pitches. He’ll have some adjustments to make. Here comes the manager out of the Giants dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Number 63 will depart and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. A new pitcher in the game, Kaiw. And he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. And here’s the catcher, Pedro Pahes. Giants. Right through there for a strike. Burlson leads off first with two down to the inning. Right side and foul ball. Next pitch misses way outside. Let’s go. Swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strikeout. So, the Giants pen gets the job done. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the Giants seven and the Cardinals two. Back here in San Francisco, bottom of the eighth, here’s the center fielder, Drew Gilbert. Gilbert sliced hard but fouled down the left side. [Music] Smoked on the ground a second. Go one up. One down. Fastball groove right down the middle. Usually a lot of damage done with that pitch. A hard grounder but he wanted to get that ball in the air. Maybe drive it into the gap. Elliot Ramos digs in now. That one at the knees for a strike. [Music] Ground ball up the middle. Dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they can’t get the out. Now batting the designated hitter, Raphael Deman aboard. And here is De’s so clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Swings through that one. Swing and a miss. And that is strike two. He got away with one there, but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this. Not close with that one. And the count is one and two. That’s inside. Lifted in the air right center field. Walker sizing this one up. Calls it in. Two away. Now batting the shorts stop. Willie Adam. And up next for the Giants, Willie Adamus. Let’s go, Giants. That clips the zone and it’s 0 and one. He’s been very consistent with his command out there on the mound. Consistently throwing at the knees. Pretty impressive when a guy can repeat his delivery like this. Two outs. He swings and fouls one off. Battling here as he fouls it away. Now will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the right fielder Jordan Walker. And that’s in for a strike. Signs of movement in the Giants bullpen. Trevor McDonald getting ready to come in for Bob Melvin. [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. No balls, two strikes. [Applause] swing at a ball popped up. Adamus hauls it in for the and there’s one down. Now batting second base. And up next for St. Louis, Jose Fairine. [Applause] bunting for a hit and he bare hands it to first. It’s there and that’s a great play. Now batting the center is second. So it’s their last chance in this one. And now the center fielder, Victor Scott. There’s the strike. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. Slapped foul. One strike away. That one missed. Inside. Almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. And a 2-2 ground ball. And this should do it. And that is the ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. 72 your final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
