Jaxson Dart ready to make first career start, chance Falcons bench Michael Penix? | The Insiders
Thursday Night Football
December 8th for
The Jaxson Dart era in New York is upon us. And for the first
time, Giants coach Brian Daboll
is speaking about the decision. Bucky Brooks will join us
tonight with more insight about
the impact this could have as the Giants try to get into the
win column. Nobody saw A30
start coming for the Colts. Well almost nobody. Cam Bynum
told us over the summer this
was possible. And he’s back on the show tonight to tell us
what’s working in Indy and the
next celebration he’s planning ahead of a clash with the Rams.
Got a glaring hole in your
fantasy lineup. Forgot to bid on the waiver wire pickups
again. Yeah me too. Good news.
Marcas Grant is here tonight to give you his biggest sleepers.
You need to get into your
lineup for week four. Welcome inside with the insiders
presented by Progressive
Insurance alongside Ian Rapoport I am Tom Pelissero.
Week four kicks off tomorrow
night. It’s a really good one in the NFC West with the
Cardinals going up against the
Seahawks. We got a whole lot of injury situations to monitor
heading into Sunday. That is
where we begin tonight with the Washington Commanders and their
quarterback situation once
again up in the air. Jayden Daniels, who did not play last
week against the Raiders,
remains limited in practice, dealing with a knee sprain
ahead of a game against the
Falcons. Here’s what Daniels had to say today about his
chances of being back on the
field. Mr. Daniels, can you give us an assessment of where
you are right now as far as
come Sunday? It’s up to the doctors. Not my decision for
you. I mean, where do you think
you’re at and feel good? Doctors are a little busy with
the commanders, not just Jayden
Daniels that is dealing with an injury. Terry McLaurin had a
second opinion or another
opinion today on his quad injury. My understanding is
it’s a more of a hip flexor
than a quad. But quad is fair because it does affect that.
Did not practice at all today.
I would say that is very much in doubt for Sunday for the New
York Giants. Tom mentioned it
right off the top. A lot of discussion about their
quarterback, not enough
discussion about who their quarterback, Jaxson Dart is
going to be throwing to Malik
Nabers. Their star receiver did not participate in practice
today. He is dealing with a
shoulder injury. The hope is it is not serious. But obviously
him being out there pretty
important. We have talked enough about Jaxson Dart. We’re
already running out of puns for
our graphics here. We’ll come up with some new ones, though
I’m sure by tomorrow because he
is going to make his first NFL start on Sunday against the
Chargers, replacing Russell
Wilson, who really struggled in that ugly Sunday night game.
Brian Daboll for the first time,
addressing why he decided to make the switch. I met both
with Russ yesterday and Jackson
privately, and Russ was nothing but a pro, which I would expect
him to be. It’s my decision
going with Jackson. We’re going to get him ready to play this
week and the remainder of the
season. Again, I don’t I don’t think any rookie quarterback
has ever just ready to play.
You put him in there because you think that he’s done enough
to show you that he can go out
there and compete, and he’s done that every step of the way.
Let’s welcome in our Bucky
Brooks to the conversation here. We’ll get back to the part
where Brian Daboll repeatedly
today said it was my decision. But in terms of the football
here Bucky, we saw some really
good moments from Jaxson Dart back in the preseason. We’ve
just gotten little plays here
and there from him so far in the regular season. Week four
against a good team in the
Chargers. What are you looking for? Well look it’s not ideal
playing against the Chargers
because their defense is legit. But I understand why Brian
Daboll made this move. When the
New York Giants were going through the process and trying
to pick a quarterback. I am
sure they envisioned Jaxson Dart being very similar to Josh
Allen, who Brian Daboll and Joe
Shane worked with in Buffalo. And in making that comparison,
I’m not saying that he’s
exactly like Josh Allen, but what he does give you is an
athletic playmaker who can do
things on the ground. He can run the RPO game, he can
improvise. He has a big arm, he
can push it down the field. He allows you to expand your
playbook and do some of these
new school concepts. That really puts defensive
coordinators in bonds. And
because they had so much success with Josh Allen, I can
understand why they want to
look. Jaxson dart out of the glass and say let’s have Josh
Allen like let’s get a
playmaker that can extend their offense. And when we have the
opportunity to have Jaxson Dart,
Cam Malik, Nabers, we now have a trio that forces the defense
to play differently. Maybe that
is a way for our offense to be more explosive, despite the
youth and inexperience we’re
talking about with those three players. The Giants, of course,
traded back into the first
round to number 25 overall to take Jaxson Dart. And I
remember Ian talking with some
people that night about the decision why it was dart versus
at the time, or Sanders or some
of the other quarterbacks that have been linked to New York.
One thing I was told was the
layers to his game. It’s exactly what Bucky was just
saying here. You can use the
athletic ability, you can get him out. We saw a really
limited Russell Wilson,
especially in that game on Sunday night. It will be
fascinating to see exactly how
this might open things up for a Giants team that, quite frankly,
needs some type of spark here.
That’s exactly right. And we’ve seen a couple glimpses of
Jaxson Dart. And what we
haven’t really seen is him throw the ball. We’ve seen the
Giants highlight his
athleticism. You mentioned if he’s Josh Allen like we’ve seen
some of that already. That’s
what the Giants have chosen to use to sprinkle into their
offense. Give him something
that Russell Wilson didn’t have. I also want to go back to draft
night though, because there was
a great clip of Joe Shane, the general manager, turning to
Brian Daboll when they make the
trade and said, we got your guy. Like this is Brian Daboll’s guy.
Jaxson Dart and Brian Daboll
are going to be linked forever in Giants lore, for good or for
bad. They both had fielded
questions say, about what it means for Brian Daboll’s job
status. Is it Jaxson Dart’s
responsibility to save Daboll’s job? It’s not. Dart just needs
to go play. But it is very
clear what role Dart has in the employment of many, many people
in the Giants building. And if
he is exactly what the Giants hope and believe, then it
should be good news for all of
them. This also ends the questions to Brian Daboll that
he was facing on a weekly, if
not daily, basis about when he was going to make a quarterback
change. Raheem Morris, the
Falcons head coach, still getting those questions after
an extremely ugly performance
by Michael Penix Jr. And the entire offense in a shutout
loss last weekend against the
Panthers once again today, he was asked about the performance
of Penix not
considering giving Kirk Cousins a shot to start. You said
Sunday Kirk won’t be competing
for the starting job next week. Why? Mike’s our quarterback.
You know, like Mike’s our
quarterback. We got a lot of confidence in Mike. We’re
moving forward with Mike.
Mike’s the guy. Mike is the guy until I let you guys know
otherwise. But Mike’s our guy.
Kirk, you know, lost his job last year. You know, but we’re
not even close to that moment
with Mike. Mike had a bad game. We had a bad day. We had a bad
day as a team. And it’s easy
for everybody to pile on. Particularly, like I told you,
the head coach, the coordinator,
obviously the quarterback first in line for the for the for the
wounds. Right. And he’s just in
line right now. He had a bad game. He’ll bounce back. A lot
of confidence. He’ll bounce
back. And I can’t wait to watch him practice today. Raheem
Morris just shutting it down
just as he did after the game. Bucky when he gave a one word
answer about would you consider
Kirk. No. But for Michael Penix Jr there is no question while
he’s early in his career, he’s
still under ten starts in the NFL. It’s got to look a lot
better. What have you seen, if
anything, to make you believe Michael Penix Jr can get this
thing on track? Well, look,
there’s a lot of belief in that building. And Michael Penix and
rightfully so. He has big arm.
He has big talent. He’s a lefty who can sling it all over the
yard. They have just not been
connected when it comes to Michael Penix and the
playmakers. Early in the year
when they were winning games, they were running the football.
They were trying to find a way
to get the ball out of the perimeter, but it was a very
conservative game plan. Well,
now, when teams take away the number one option, Bijan
Robinson and their running game,
is Michael Penix comfortable enough to push the ball down
the field, keep it out of
harm’s way and make those plays. And the only thing that we’ll
know is he’s going to have to
do it, because people are going to continue to take this game
plan and test him. Now he did
it as a collegiate, but doing it at the NFL level is
different. They will put Zach
Robinson down on the field level so he can call plays to
see if they can get that better
synergy, but this has to be one where Michael Penix is going to
have to make the plays when the
plays are there. He’s in year two. Not a lot of patience for
a young quarterback, as this
team is kind of shaky, a little shaky right now. So they need
the quarterback to play better.
They are a little shaky in what this organization has done, is
put everything they have behind
Michael Penix. I mean, this was one of the most controversial
draft decisions we have seen in
some time. And if you’ve heard me speak and you listen to what
I’ve said on this, it is
something that I believe is important to the Falcons
organization. They had a
succession plan with Kirk Cousins. They have a young,
talented quarterback. They
really like someone. I know a lot of people across the league
like, well he’s got a great arm.
He’s got plenty of intangibles. He just hasn’t played well. And
if you’re the Atlanta Falcons
yes obviously they’re going to be questions about should you
go to the backup quarterback.
They see Kirk Cousins every day in practice. Clearly believe
Tom that the organization is
better with Michael Penix as the starting quarterback. And
there are many people,
including the GM including the head coach, who have bet
everything they have on this
quarterback here. He has to play better, and to me, that’s
the only important thing for
the Falcons season. And as Raheem Morris said, he’s the
starter until I say otherwise.
Couple more games like that and you’re going to potentially get
to a point where even within
that locker room, as Bucky would know, well, you might
start having questions about
whether Kirk Cousins could do better. Kirk Cousins former
team by the way. Already on to
their backup quarterback now J.J. McCarthy with a high ankle
sprain which means Ian we’re
expecting Carson Wentz to Dublin. That music is really
what what does it for me. I
mean just put you right in the mood to have a Dublin game. And
and we’re almost there. Only on
NFL network by the way welcome to good coverage presented by
Progressive Insurance. I want
to talk to our good friend Brian Baldinger here. Baldy, we
got this this big game. We got
Vikings Steelers. We got it in Dublin. And we got you right
here to break down what is most
important for you on the field. X’s and O’s wise for this game.
All right Ian. So you know if
this is this game is a carryover to a statistic from a
year ago where both the
Steelers and the Vikings led the league in takeaways with
with 33 apiece. And they’ve
carried that over to this year. Both teams had five in their
game last year. Last night you
asked me about Isaiah Rodgers. This is a two deep five under
zone. It’s a little disguised
at the start but that’s where they get to. And at the bottom
Isaiah Rodgers is a flat player.
He’s late. He knows he’s got a receiver behind him. He’s got a
back in front of him. He’s
playing in between. When the ball is tipped out of the chase
Brown’s hands, he picks it up
and he goes the distance for the Vikings second touchdown of
the day. He had three takeaways
in the first 30 minutes of the game. Two of them were for
touchdowns. Now watch Jalen
Redmond the left defensive tackle right here like he takes
on the double team. But he
keeps that inside arm free. And he punches the ball out right
there. All right. The ball’s on
the ground and Jonathan Allen falls on it. The Vikings have
been creating these type of
takeaways under Brian Flores. And for the Steelers it’s very
very similar to what they are
doing as well. Like you look at Nick Herbig and you look at TJ
Watt who’s a spy on this play,
and Cam Heyward and they’re trying to keep Drake Maye in
the pocket right here TJ’s a
spy. But here comes this Nick Herbert Herbie is unreal. Like
he’s got seven forced fumbles
in 32 games. The Steelers he gets the ball out TJ Watt is on
it. That was a huge play led to
the winning touchdown. And then you watch Jalen Ramsey. He’s
been doing this a long time.
Little stack route right here right. But it’s man coverage.
And during man right here Jalen
Ramsey is cluing the quarterback right here. So he
feels the route. He’s the
quarterback. And then you know with that six foot three frame
is jumps right in front of it
and takes the ball away. Important play in that game.
These teams both live off these
takeaways. They have been doing it. One of the reasons why both
teams got to the playoffs a
year ago. And so something to look for in this game is maybe
who wins the turnover battle.
Ian wins the Battle of Dublin on Sunday morning. That’s what
I keep thinking is like
sometimes these international games, these early morning
games and unfamiliar stadium,
they can get a little bonkers. I would not be surprised if
multiple defensive takeaways,
maybe a scoop and score, maybe a pick six, maybe some sort of
international celebration. A
lot to look forward to on Sunday. Baldy, thank you very
much. As always, stick around.
You’re not going anywhere. Tom, take it away. Words cannot
express how excited I am.
Baldi’s breakdowns are back on the insiders. The Buccaneers
have something to be excited
about from a health perspective. Finally, Chris Godwin junior, a
full participant in practice
today for the first time as he makes his way back from a
significant injury, potentially
having him available on Sunday against the Eagles at a time
that Mike Evans is not expected
to play. Tristan is still limited. We’ll see when he gets
back. Baker Mayfield also on
the injury report dealing with a right biceps injury. He got
hit in the elbow in that game.
Kept playing through it. We know he’s one of the toughest
guys around. Gave no indication
today that there would be any question about his availability.
But we shall see if there’s any
issues in terms of the velocity that he’s getting on the
football. When we get into that
game against Philadelphia 49 ers have a legit now three way
quarterback Brock Purdy still
dealing with his toe and shoulder injuries. Mac Jones
aggravated a PCL sprain in his
knee. So Adrian Martinez along with Purdy and Mac Jones
they’re all getting first team
reps in practice this week. Kyle Shanahan said it. We’ll
see exactly who ends up being
under center on Sunday against the Jaguars. Also, some good
injury news for the Kansas City
Chiefs. Xavier Worthy for the first time since the friendly
fire, took him out in the
opener in Brazil when he ran into Travis Kelce with a
shoulder injury. Listed as a
full participant in practice today, the key for him has just
been getting comfortable with
the harness. It’s not been any type of a setback along the way
here. The fact he’s a full
participant today would seem to have him trending in a good
direction ahead of their game
on Sunday against the Ravens. So much more to come on this
show, including an inside look
at the Packers Cowboys showdown on Sunday, a matchup of two
teams coming off of a really
disappointing performance in week three. The Colts have not
been disappointed in much of
anything through the first three weeks, but on Sunday,
they got their biggest test yet.
Cam Bynum will be here to talk about a showdown with the Rams.

T Jones T Jones had 113 passer
rating. Yes, sir okay okay man. Hey defense four sacks. Yeah.
Gave up none. It is a good time
to be a member of the Indianapolis Colts. Always a
good time to be this guy cam
Bynum with us here on the insiders with me Tom Pelissero
and Ian Rapoport I remember we
had you on sometime in the offseason after you had signed
there. You were making the
pitch, right? I asked you, hey, give me the reasons to believe
in this Colts team. Now you’re
doing it. You’re three and zero. You guys are having a good time.
Just tell me what it’s been
like to be a part of the start of the season. Yeah, it’s been
super fun being a part of it.
Just the success we’ve had in the grand scheme of things,
being three and zero means
nothing to us, so we’re not settling at all, but just the
standard that we set and
starting hot like this. This is the momentum that’s going to
carry us through the whole year.
And we know that we have to keep it up. And it’s always a
good thing starting hot and
something that we’ve known from the off season. When I talked
to you guys last time, I told
you guys how confident I was in this team and just how we have
a complete team and just the
way that we went about our training camp and everything,
it there’s really never no
doubt in my mind that we would be in this spot. And it’s like
I said, it’s only the beginning.
I know we have so much more work to do. Kim, you were
pretty optimistic, way more
optimistic than just being totally honest, probably any of
us and most of the whole
country. Now that you’re there, now that you’re in it, now that
the Colts are three and zero,
has anything surprised you about the team that you are on
now that most people thought
would not be very good, but actually has been really good?
No, nothing surprised me just
because when I got here, when I’m looking around at the
players and really
familiarizing myself with my my new teammates, when I first got
here in the offseason, I saw
how complete and there was really a complete the entire
team was. When you go at every
position, you, there’s a star, every single position and some
positions. We have multiple in
our secondary. Me being biased, I think this is one of the best
secondaries I’ve been a part of.
And that and I feel like that starts the whole energy of the
whole team. When you have a
secondary that’s flying around, I think that sets the standard
from the back end, then up to
the front. And just like the offense, they’ve only punted
what, one time this whole year
in three games, which is crazy and insane. And I was mad that
we didn’t go for it on every
single fourth down this past game because I wanted to keep
that streak going. But just the
complete games that we’ve been playing and beating teams that,
you know, people would say,
okay, you were supposed to beat those teams. But the way that
we beat teams, these three
teams so far were clean wins and no turnovers. Defense
turning the ball over. And I
think it just it all worked out well. Your defensive
coordinator Lou Anarumo has
been doing this for a while. He had a lot of success in
Cincinnati. He went to a Super
Bowl with the Bengals. Tell me what Lou brings on a daily
basis that helps kind of glue
this whole thing together. I think the accountability I
think that’s the one thing Lou
isn’t afraid to coach people, and he’s not afraid to coach
you hard. And that’s one reallyf
any coach, especially being new to a new to a team, said
there’s so many stars on this
defense, but he’s talking to every single person, whether
you’re a rookie or a ten year
vet. He’s treating everybody the same. If you mess up, he’s
going to hold you accountable
and teach you and really get you out of that, you know, out
of your mistakes and really
speak life into you and how to how to get better. I think
every single thing that Lou
does is pretty consistent with the way that he talks. Like I
said, the young guys and the
old guys, and he just hard on us. And I think that’s a good
thing when you have so many
good players that, you know, make coaches in the past may
have been soft on them just
because they’re big name guys or whatever. But Lou came in
here with a standard and he’s
making us play to that standard every single day. And if it’s
not met, he’s going to let us
know. Yeah, it certainly seems to be one of the best hires of
the entire offseason. I want to
talk about your quarterback now because he really Daniel Jones
has obviously really surprised
people this season. You saw him all in training camp. What do
you think the best thing that
Daniel Jones brings to your football team is? I would say
consistency. That’s the one
word that I’ve seen from him from the start of the offseason,
in OTAs, through training camp.
And even now, there’s nothing crazy about the games that he’s
playing. Besides how consistent
and how clean he’s playing football. I think every single
thing that he’s doing is making
the right decisions, taking the checkdown, taking the
intermediate routes, and when
coaches calling a shot, he’s throwing a good a good ball.
And not to mention he’s he can
scramble really well and he can really get downfield and make
make something happen with his
legs too. So I think everything about his game so far has been
consistent, and that’s
something that I see in his preparation, the way he goes
about practice and literally
everything I see. So there’s no surprise when we go out there
and he’s playing super well.
You faced the Rams before you faced that offense Sean McVay
Matthew Stafford. You saw him
in the playoffs last year. Just this is one that people are
looking at and saying all right
this is the first real big test for the Colts. When you look at
him on film what are you seeing.
Yeah you see just like I mentioned with us, we’re a
complete team. I think they
have a super complete team. And you know they have a lot of all
stars on their team with
Davante Adams, with Puka. Just guys that we know are going to
get the targets. And those are
guys you can’t let let beat you. And not to mention the
quarterback. Super good. You
know a legend in this game. He’s somebody that we want to
be able to pressure and just
not make it easy for him because he can make any throw
on the field. He’s obviously
smart. He’s seen so much football over his, you know,
almost almost up to 20 years in
the league. So this is for sure going to be a good test for us
and for me personally losing to
them twice last year. I’m putting extra focus into this
game this week. All right cam,
this is a personal question for me. This is about believe it or
not, my fantasy team okay.
We’re oh and three. It’s been a real struggle. I have
individual defensive players on
my team and you are on my team okay. We’re zero and three.
You’ve been part of a huge
turnaround for the Indianapolis Colts. Can you give some
encouragement to the locker
room, to my fantasy team to help us turn things around?
What would you say to the other
players dealing with an zero three start? I’d say everybody,
you guys have to prepare this
week to make plays so he cannot lose because you know all the
information in the league. So
it looks bad when you’re losing and you’re oh and three and
your fantasy league. So
everybody has to play well because this is you’re the last
you’re the last person in the
world that should be zero three. Last thing for you Kevin. You
were absolutely accurate on
that. We can’t let you get out of here without a celebration
question. All right. I got a
two parter. One before you did. The mascot blew that that
thrusting celebration. Did you
clear it with the league? That that wasn’t a penalty or a fine,
because the thrusting could be
a problem. And number two, what have you got next? What are you
cooking up? All right, so to
the first question, I accepted my fate in case I got a flag. I
was like, all right, if I get a
fine, it’s worth it. If I get a flag, it’s worth it. This is a
once in a lifetime opportunity
to get an interception right next to blue and do his
signature thing. And me and
blue didn’t even plan it. That’s the funniest part about
it. But for this week going
into LA, it’s going to have to be some type of LA theme. I’m
doing my research now, watching
some movies that were based in LA. I’m still doing my research,
so I got some work to do. I got
some people doing homework for me, my little sister, my wife.
So they’re figuring it out for
me. But I got to do something that’s paying homage to LA, my
hometown in Southern California.
Something tells me you’re going to get to use whatever it is
you cook up, man. Always a
pleasure having you on the show. Cam, please come back again.
All right. Yep. I will
appreciate you guys. Good talking to you guys as always.
Thanks, man. The Colts are
still unbeaten. The Packers not so much after that very bizarre
loss in Cleveland. Cowboys also
coming off of an ugly performance. Who’s got the edge.
Well Stacey Dales and Jane
Slater will be here to break down the Sunday night matchup
right after this on The
Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance. Want

Cardinals Seahawks on Thursday
Night Football which means we get to see those sweet
Cardinals jerseys. The rivalry
jerseys presented by Nike. Good job. Built to last. We are
going to be seeing them on
Thursday Night Football. We’re going to be seeing a good game
on Thursday Night Football as
well. Welcome inside with the insiders. Our good friend
Bridget Condon joins us.
Bridget, it’s early. I know it’s early, but this feels just
looking at it like Seahawks.
Cardinals is a big one right off the bat. Break down this
matchup for us Ian I thought
you were going to say the two words that we probably haven’t
said in about I don’t know nine
months must win. And I know that’s crazy. It’s week four.
But when you look at these two
teams they’re both zero and one in the division coming into
this game. And I did some
research. Well, a research team did the research. But let me
know that teams that are zero
and two in their division, they don’t typically go on to make
the playoffs. Just 9% of teams
who have been zero and two in their division since the
division realignment have gone
on to make the playoffs. So it’s really important on prime
time for both of these teams to
execute. And a lot of things it may come down to though the run
game. Let’s start with the
Cardinals because big news. As you know this week they lost
their leading back in James
Conner who is out for the season with a foot injury. So
in comes Trey Benson who is
only had one career start. He’s only had his most 13 touches in
a single game. Not more than
that in any game, but I was talking to linebacker Mack
Wilson for the Cardinals
earlier today, and he told me that this guy is ready for this
moment. I said, why? He said,
well, I watched him a lot this offseason, obviously going up
against each other. And he said
he has been on James Conner’s hip the entire offseason
watching every move. He says
he’s ready for this moment. He also mentioned that he’s looked
hungry in practice this week,
Ian. And then we flip to the other side, the Seahawks. The
Seahawks are running the ball
more this season than they have the entire millennium. And I
know again, it’s only three
weeks into the season. But seriously, they’re running a
run play or calling for for a
run play. On more than half of their offensive snaps so far
this season. Mack Wilson, the
linebacker from the Cardinals I talked to, said big emphasis
for us in our game plan,
stopping Kenneth Walker, who has made so many guys miss
tackles already this season.
And Wilson tells me that he’s a guy. You got to get him at the
hamstring level, Ian. You got
to get him down low because he is a guy who can see it. He can
hit it. He can make you look
bad on national television prime time. So they’re focused
on trying to get him down. Yeah.
One thing I know about this one, they’re going to run the ball a
lot and it is going to be
unbelievably physical, which is fun. That’s going to be fun.
For us to watch would not be so
fun for those of us to participate in, but definitely
fun to watch. Bridget, thank
you very much. Great stuff as always by you and the research
team. Pelissero. Go ahead
Cowboys. Packers Sunday night, Micah Parsons doing an
interview in advance of facing
his old team with the Associated Press, asked about
what it’ll be like to sack Dak,
Prescott said, in part, it’s going to be painful. That’s my
guy. He was always like a good
mentor for me. As for Dallas, they got a lot of injuries
mounting, though. Brian
Schottenheimer says he’s not too concerned. Look, I mean,
injuries are unfortunately a
big part of this business and it’s hard to replace a guy like
KD. But you know, guys got to
step up and do that. And you know again it gives us a week
to do it. You know this is
really the second week in a row we’ve had to adjust kind of on
the fly on game day the week
before it was Terp. You know when Terp went out you got to
move some of your personnel and
stuff around and had to do that again yesterday with KD, but
still got plenty of ammunition
to go do. What we got to do. Let’s welcome in our Stacey
Dales and Jane Slater to the
conversation. Jane, I’ll start with you. Don’t get a lot
spicier than this in week four.
Micah Parsons, a superstar going against the team that
traded him like a month ago.
Tell me about the challenge that the Cowboys are facing
trying to get something going
against that Packers team. Well, Tom, I think the big issue for
the Cowboys is they’re fragile
on both sides of the ball. I mean, he mentioned there that
they don’t have CeeDee lamb.
But you’re also missing Tyler Booker who’s helpful for you on
the interior. And while the
offense was already expected to do so much before these
injuries, the thing that stands
out to me the most is they’re giving up big plays in an
alarming rate already this year.
Dallas has allowed 15 plays of 20 plus yards and a league high
five touchdowns at 25 yards or
more. And we’re keeping an eye on Trayvon Diggs. Today he was
on the injury report with a
knee injury and didn’t practice. Trying to figure out if that’s
just giving him some time or
what the deal is there. So just last week when we look at how
they played against Chicago,
they got burned on a 65 yard flea flicker, plus completions
of 41 and 35 yards. Those are
the things that stand out to me, particularly when you look at
this Packers team that’s
averaging 21.5 points a game, and they already have ten sacks
amongst their front seven. So
it’s a little bit of a challenge and takes, I think, a
little bit of the excitement
out of Micah coming to Dallas, because they’re not out at full
strength. Yeah, Jane. And don’t
look now. Hello, Tom. Jeff Heffley’s defense in green Bay
is the number one scoring
defense in football. They’ve given up. Surrendered just 44
points through three games this
season. That’s a 15 just below 15 points per game. They have
been outstanding. They’ve also
given up the fewest yards per play in the National Football
League, just under four yards
per play. It has been very difficult for opposing offenses.
Pro Football Focus has them
ranked second in QB pressures, fifth in QB pressure percent,
and it was interesting to stand
in the locker room after their loss to the Browns. Jeff Hafley
you don’t see many defensive
coordinators, Tom and Jane standing in gathering a few of
his players, but he’s got an
open door policy. They love playing for him and they’re
going to be fired up,
especially Micah Parsons to go there to Dallas. When you’re
making $47 million per year,
there’s a level of responsibility and
accountability that comes with
that. It’s hard to put what happened last Sunday in
Cleveland on the defense,
because the only touchdown they gave up was a product of an ill
advised pick six deep in their
own territory here. But just tell me about the way that
Micah has kind of approached
both the good and the bad so far in green Bay. Well, it’s
been all good, even regardless
of that loss, Tom, because him alone, the addition of him to
this roster has elevated the
confidence level of the entire team. But from a defensive
standpoint, as I spoke with
several Packers personnel on the field this past Sunday, I
mean, he’s given so many
opportunities to other guys. And he said, today we have to
hit the reset button and make
sure we don’t give away another game. They felt like they gave
it away. He said, you can’t you
can’t just play one quarter, you can’t play two quarters,
you can’t play three. You got
to play four quarters. He took full accountability. He was
fantastic after the Browns game,
standing at his locker as I witnessed and saying, you know
I had two offsides. Can’t
happen. They didn’t bring me here. It’s unacceptable for me
to have two offsides in a game.
And the Packers have had some penalties. So they’ve got to
get a little bit more
disciplined. Jane, as they get ready to go there, it’s going
to be an electric atmosphere in
Dallas. I know you’ll be at the game, but it’s also just going
to be a lot of hoopla
surrounding this. They’re going to have to tamper, taper down
the noise, if you will,
surrounding their premier edge rusher. I think what’s going to
be the most interesting to me,
Stacey and Tom, is how well these green Bay Packers fans
travel already. You know, they
were asked, is there going to be a Micah tribute video? And
Jerry Jones said no. And as he
typically does, he takes the spotlight off the things we
should be focusing on. As I
referenced, some of the defensive big plays that
they’ve given up,
Schottenheimer saying they need to sort of get back to
execution and they’re going to
make some changes this week. And he’s calling Micah Michael
again. It’s just something he
continues to do. I have the sense he knows exactly what
he’s doing when he does that.
But also, I thought it was funny when Micah said that he
is going to have a suite full
of people. He had a suite that he bought at the beginning of
the season. He tried to sell it
to Kenny Clark. Kenny Clark declined, so he is stuck on the
hook. So talk about
accountability. He has accountability to the Cowboys
for that suite. So that gives
it a little bit of an extra sizzle. You know his family is
Cowboys fans I’ll be interested
to see what they are wearing. His mom was actually at that
Philadelphia Eagles game as a
Cowboys fan. So it’ll make it interesting. And and people
have said how will the fans
receive Micah? I don’t think he was here long enough or he
didn’t get that big contract
that he didn’t necessarily live up to. That would frustrate
fans. In other words, it’s not
like they paid him and he didn’t live up to it. But that
back thing, that’s still going
to be a problem for the Cowboys fans who saw him go to the
airport the day before. He was
getting a second opinion on the back, and then he was back at
practice like three days later.
Those are the things that are probably going to be
frustrating, and the fact that
the Cowboys defense really could use him right now, let
the record show Micah Parsons
is back on the injury report. With the back officially
limited in practice today. Jane
Stacy, great stuff. Thank you both very much. Still a lot
more to come on this show,
including, hey, if you had CeeDee lamb who’s not going to
play in that game on Sunday
night, who should you fill the spot in your fantasy lineup
with? Could it be that guy,
Romeo Dobbs? Could it be somebody like Alvin Kamara in
the flex spot. Marcas Grant is
with us with answers. Next on the insiders presented by
Progressive Insurance. Being an
NFL player demands knowledge yeah NFL plus keep the NFL in
reach MVP. Time now to mark my
words. Or more accurately, Marcus Marcus Grant’s words as
he joins us for his weekly
fantasy segment with me, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.
Marcus, let’s talk week for
fantasy sleepers. Give me a quarterback who maybe hasn’t
been producing so far. But you
need to get in the lineup this week I’m going to go with
Jordan Love. And this sort of
straddles that line between a guy who’s doing a lot for his
team in real life, but maybe
not so much in fantasy. This week, I think those two things
collide. One thing we know is
we’re going to target that Cowboys defense. They have been
bad all year long. We saw a
couple weeks ago Russell Wilson go for 450 against them last
week. It was Caleb Williams who
threw four touchdown passes against them. So even though
this has been a run heavy
offense, just the nature of the Cowboys defense, I think lends
itself to the Packers throwing
the football a lot. Plus, Jordan Love pushing the ball
down field nearly nine yards
per attempt, ninth highest number in the NFL. So if
there’s ever a week you’re
going to get Jordan Love into your starting lineup. This
seems like it okay Marcus you
mentioned Run Heavy. Actually it was a big week for running
back injuries, which means
plenty of people probably going to need a running back. Why
don’t you give us a running
back sleeper to roll with. Yeah Alvin Kamara which is the thing
that you know a few years ago
would have been ridiculous to say that Alvin Kamara is a
sleeper. But you know the march
of time sort of changes things. We don’t view him the same way
we once did. But he is still
the number one running back there in New Orleans 80% of the
snaps, 60% of the rushing
attempts and a matchup that on paper looks good against the
bills. Their run defense right
now ranked last in the NFL. Now, the only thing that could be an
issue is game script. Kamara is
not getting the same number of targets that he did earlier in
his career, but I think there’s
an opportunity for him to get the ball, especially if the
Saints are playing from behind.
Last week, things got out of hand so quickly that you just
had to pretty much scrap
whatever ideas you had going on. But if the Saints can sort of
hang in there and not get
blitzed early on, I think we see Kamara get those targets.
We know he’s going to get the
rushing attempts. So this is a good week to have Alvin Kamara
on your roster. A lot of people
watching might have lost a receiver last week CeeDee lamb
Mike Evans even Terry McLaurin.
Status up in the air. Give me a wide receiver. Marcas maybe
somebody who might be available
sitting there on the waiver wire. You could plug in this
week Romeo Dobbs. And I say
this knowing that look the Cougars don’t have a tried and
true number one wide receiver.
But Dobbs looks like the closest thing to that. He leads
the team in routes run and in
air yards per target. Already talked about that Cowboys
defense, how they are giving up
big plays through the passing game and how Jordan Love likes
to be aggressive. So we’ll see.
It sort of shifts. Who’s going to be the guy in any given week
for the Packers. So if it turns
out that, you know, say it’s Matthew Golden or Donovan Wicks,
just pretend that I said all
this about those guys instead. Oh yeah, that’s definitely what
we’ll do. We definitely won’t
rub it in your face that you got it wrong. We’ll never do
that to you or Foley or any of
our other favorites. Why don’t you give us a sleeper tight end
before we let you get out of
here? All right. Jake Ferguson might be on the borderline of
sleepers, but I think this is
just more, for me, an opportunity to tell you that if
you’ve got Jake Ferguson, he
absolutely should be in your lineup this week. Even before
the CeeDee lamb injury, he was
getting a lot of work in that. Cowboys offense had a 22%
target share the first two
weeks. That number jumped to 25% after the game on Sunday.
Cowboys a league high 131 pass
attempts through the first three games of the season. So
even if we see more for George
Pickens or maybe you see a Kavontae Turpin, there’s going
to be plenty of opportunity for
Jake Ferguson. The other part of this is as good as the
Packers defense has been.
They’ve gotten got by some tight ends through the first
three weeks of the season. So I
think a large target share plus a good matchup means Jake
Ferguson is in line for big
fantasy production. NFL.com sleepers. That’s where you can
find Marcas Grant’s entire list
for week four. Marcas thank you very much. We will see you next
week. Still more to come on
this episode of The Insiders including a look at well a
rough night for the Ravens as
they get set to face a Chiefs team that’s got their own
issues, whose frustration will
lead to motivation and production. That didn’t quite
rhyme, but I was headed the
right direction. We’ll talk about that game next on The
Insiders, presented by
Progressive Insurance. Harbor freight tools keep getting
better with time, better
performance, better durability, tell. Take control at ready.gov.
Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson
are hugging there. They are hugging there. They’re going to
be hugging Sunday afternoon.
One of those teams, though is going to be 1 in 4 somehow.
It’s really actually bizarre.
But that is their reality. Let’s break this down a little
more. Welcome back to The
Insiders, presented by Progressive Insurance Bucky
Brooks, Brian Baldinger, thanks
again for joining us. Bucky, I want to start with you here.
You wrote an NFL column last
week, and I want to make sure I got this right, that the Chiefs
were in the danger zone with
the impotent offense that they had. They won last week. All
good. No, not all good at all.
They’re going to have a tough time winning games against the
elites. If they’re not able to
put up points at a rate that we’re talking about near 28
points. This is a team. They
have to struggle for everything they get. They’re not explosive
on offense in any way. And even
if Xavier Worthy comes back, the root of their problem stems
from the fact that no one
really respects their run game. The fact that Pat Mahomes is
the guy that you have to
account for. He has been the leading rusher for most of
their time. They need more
explosive plays in the running game because then they can get
the single high safety looks,
which allows Marquise, Hollywood, Brown, worthy and
others to win those one on one
matchups on the outside until they fix the offensive line and
the ground attack. We won’t see
the fun loving Kansas City Chiefs that we fell in love
with a few years ago. Right now,
everything is connect the dots, and it’s too hard to win in
this league when you don’t have
explosive plays. It’s also hard to win if you have a defense
that they might be talented,
but they’re giving up a lot of big plays. This Baltimore
Ravens defense. Baldy, what are
you seeing and how is this all happening? You know it’s
interesting. They’ve given up
seven rushing touchdowns in three games which is the most
in the NFL. But they’re giving
up the explosive runs. We saw David Montgomery on two runs go
for 103 yards the week before.
We saw the rookie in Cleveland, Quinshon Judkins, go for 31
yard run. And it’s interesting
to me because they didn’t really get into any reduced
fronts to try to stop these
kind of runs until two minutes ago in the third quarter. And
that’s usually the number one
adjustment is put bigger cows in there like cover up the two
guards, cover up the center.
You know, bring down Kyle Hamilton and build your box and
not let you know David
Montgomery get started. And so we didn’t see that. Now this is
like a creative little play
here, you know, by you know by Johnnie Morton. So give him
credit there in Detroit. But
you know, there’s just too many big runs like this. This run
basically put the game on, on
ice right here 31 yards into the end zone. That’s bad
tackling. That’s bad. You know
not getting off blocks right here. There’s too much of that.
And so the adjustment for Zach
Orr is really to get to the reduced fronts and not let
these teams get started. And
I’m anxious to see if maybe against Kansas City who’s not
running the ball. Well if they
elect to do that or not. Yeah, I’m curious too. I have to be
honest, this Ravens defense has
been frustrating to watch because they’re so talented. I
know they’re injured, but
they’re so talented. Just giving up too many plays. Baldy.
Bucky, thank you very much for
your expertise. As always. You guys are killing it as per
usual. Let’s see if the teams
you talked about can follow suit on Sunday. Here on the
insiders, we do a lot of
talking. That’s basically all we do. We sit here, we talk,
and we do it all week long. If
you would like to get the insiders, that’s where you get
them. You got a podcast on
Monday or on YouTube every day we’re on NFL plus all the time
or on fast, and we’re on NFL
network so often you should just keep it locked here all
the time. Anyway, we’re not
done here yet. Coming back in a second. Your home is your happy
place. Until you come back to
bad odors. rejected, never rejected. But I
am, I am somebody. Injury
updates ahead of the first game of week four to this NFL season
for the Seahawks. Zach
Charbonnet, running back is listed as questionable but was
a full participant. Devon
Witherspoon missed last week’s game in Pittsburgh. He is off
the report. Good to go.
Cardinals have some injuries. Zay Jones ruled out he suffered
a concussion on Sunday so not a
surprise there. Paris Johnson their tackle listed as
questionable. So some things to
monitor leading up to kickoff tomorrow night on Prime Video
right here on NFL network, you
will be able to watch the Vikings and Steelers bright and
early with tons of this music
right here. 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Kickoff on Sunday. Dublin
already transforming. The
Vikings are headed over there. Tomorrow they’ll be joined by
the Steelers cast of thousands.
Catch it only on NFL network. Maybe if you go into one of the
local pubs over there, you
might even bump into one of the quarterbacks. And I know this
is a business trip, but what
are you looking forward to about going over to Ireland?
Guinness. Guinness on tap is my
favorite beer in the world. I don’t really drink beer. You
had said the team that drinks
together wins together. Yeah. Have you tried to incorporate
that more? I’m not going to
tell you that. If you’re going to. That’s a great follow up
question. If you’re going to
drink a beer, a Guinness, that’s that would be the place
to do it right there. Ian I
mean, Dublin has plenty of good stuff. Bailey’s is fantastic.
Jameson. They do a great job.
It’s not just Guinness though. My wife loves Guinness, so I
respect what Aaron Rodgers
Steelers and Patriots. This
