I’m Russell Holiday and we get to watch another Vancouver Conucks game together. We’re very, very excited. It is game two of this preseason schedule. The Vancouver Conucks are playing down the road down the number one in Abbottzford against the Calgary Flames. They did the same thing last year. So, we’re actually going to have a trip down memory lane uh to go and watch a little bit of that uh before we get into it. But, I always get ahead of myself. So, let’s start by talking about what we’re actually going to be doing tonight. So, let’s hop on over here. So, there’s the thumbnail for the stream. Conucks versus Flames preseason game two. You can see here, this is Dustin Boydell. This is Kuckland. This is Dobby. This is me. And we’re going to watch these guys play against each other tonight. So, the lineup for tonight’s game, we’re going to have the Conucks versus the Flames. We’re going to start off before we even get any of this. So, once we say hello to you guys, then we’re going to do the stats that you want, but you don’t really need. And as part of the stats that you want, but you don’t really need, we’re actually going to be watching a clip from last year’s stream in the preseason in game two against the Flames. So, the Conucks played the Flames in the preseason last year in Abbottzford. So, it’s kind of dja vu. So, I thought I’d show you guys a clip of the time. I predicted the game-winning goal of that game, too. Uh, live on stream. It was only our second stream ever. So, we’ll go through that a little bit. Uh, we’re going to go through the Conucks starting lineup as well. I’ll get you guys all up to date on all the lines that are going to be happening tonight. Who’s in the lineup, who’s out of the lineup, and then during the first intermission, we’re going to have the Rusty and Dusty side show. So, Dustin Boydell will be by during the second. We’re very excited. We’ve had Kucks land on once for a recorded interview. Today’s going to be his first time coming to join us to talk about the game, get his analysis of all the things that have been happening in prospects and training camp and preseason, and we’ll see what he thinks is going to happen with the Conucks moving forward. So, if we’re talking about the Canucks playing on Wednesday, their overall record on Wednesday, and this is all regular season stats. This is just so you guys can kind of see what we do here. Uh, the Canucks have played on Wednesday 535 times. There are an overall record of 248, 260, and 27 overtime losses. When playing at home, they’re 25 games above 500 at 125 and 100 with 14 overtime losses. On the road, they’re 123 and 160 with 13 overtime losses. So, definitely a little better at home. Abbottzford is home, so let’s keep that in the back of our minds. Playing on September the 24th. The Vancouver Conucks have never played on September the 24th, which is kind of weird, right? Uh so but I mean that’s because it is the uh the preseason so of course they would never play it on there. Uh Conucks versus the Flames again regular season stats. They’ve played 274 times. The Conucks are actually 11 games below 500. What is that? No, that’s that’s 21 games below 500. They’re 121 142 and 11 overtime losses. In 137 home games though, they’re 70 and 58. So, they’re really bad in Calgary. Uh, but at home, they do have a 12 above 500. Uh, which means they’re really bad at home. They’re over 33 games below 500 in Calgary. We’re talking about the Conucks versus the Flames on Wednesday. They’ve done it 33 times in the regular season. The Conucks are 16 15- two, 8 and 8 and two, 8-7. So, they’re actually really good on Wednesdays. when you look at their Wednesdays versus their overall record, the Canucks versus the Flames on Wednesday. It’s a good day for the for the Canucks. So, we’ll take that as a win. And then the Conucks current leading scoreer versus the Knights, which it’s not supposed to say Knights, it’s supposed to say Flames. Canox’s current leading score, Brockbers’s got 15 goals in 36 games. Quinn Hughes has 19 assists in 28 games and Person has 31 points in 29 games. While the Flames current leading scorer against the Conucks is Backland with 15 goals in 66 games, he’s also got 23 uh 23 assists in 66 games and he’s also got 38 points overall. So, Backland leading all categories as the longest serving member of this Calgary Flames roster. Cool. Let’s do what we usually do here. We’ll start off by talking about the ups and downs of the first period of play. What did you like? Um, I liked the uh the aggressiveness of the power play. I I liked to see that. I obviously we have Foot’s aggression in the uh the talking points later, but you could see it in that first period there. Um definitely with Hoglander being in a nice net front position uh to clean up a rebound. Actually had a guy at the front of the net and and uh we’re working on getting shots to the net to the net, which was the the primary focus. Uh, a couple of really nice goals for the Canucks. A good textbook power play one and then Carlson with a great backdoor pass to man a wideopen Mancini who buries one. Uh, just making more of a case for himself to be in the NHL instead of the AHL. Um, but Wheelander at the same time. Um, or Vandlander, which we got to, I guess, get used to calling him. Um, I’m just going to start writing it down with a V. and not even bother with a W. That’s the only way I’m going to get it. Um, we have W’s in the language, but we don’t pronounce them. Yeah. So, you know, he’s he’s definitely showing that he’s starting to catch up to the pace really quickly as well. And he’s had a good uh good first period here and the last half of the other game uh he showed well in as um as well. So, um, you know, I’m I’m really happy to see the Canucks with the crazy depth on right D. Um, and yeah, the, uh, the penalty kill looked incredible. Uh, just the defense overall, like Demco really hasn’t had to work at all. Um, so when you see that happening, uh, yeah, it’s Calgary doesn’t have the strongest, uh, roster out there tonight, but when you see the young guys playing this caliber of hockey, you know, these are all the elite prospects that the Canucks have out there, plus some veterans, um, just kind of keeping things in, uh, in the structure. uh what Foot is working on is clearly starting to mesh with the guys and I’m really excited to see more of the NHL guys get into the lineup and just really now with what we’re seeing here it’s it’s energy and uh the the on the penalty kill there the the one forward really pushes hard in the neutral zone to try and get the puck away from them and they’re making it really hard for Calgary to get into the offensive zone on the power play. So, let’s see here. You know, Sassin almost got away for a breakaway. Hopefully, they can do that at the beginning of the second here and and uh you know, they were pushing the pushing the play even on the penalty kill into the Calgary zone. So, uh just really liking what I’m seeing so far from the new structure and the new coaching. It seems like all the assistants and foot are working together to utilize their strengths and their knowledge and it’s uh starting to see a nice team product forming uh so far in the preseason. I mean obviously it’s a small sample size but we got to take what we see and what I’m seeing is a new structure of getting the puck to the net. uh being aggressive on the forch check regardless of being down a man. Um we have the talent and the skill and the speed to push on the forche when we’re penalty killing. Uh and we have the defensive I mean the defensive players we have I mean it’s just an embarrassment of riches at this point. When you look at our prospects and our depth on D, it’s like sooner or later some of these guys are going to have to either move to get other prospects or other uh positions that we need, but you know, obviously um our right D is set for the foreseeable future. I mean, we could ask Tyler Myers to wave his no trade clause if we wanted to. He’s a very cheap veteran player at $3 million cap hit right now that a lot of teams would be happy to take on, especially with two guys who really look like they are ready to be in the NHL in Vlander and Mancini. It’s just a it’s a tough spot to be in, but uh it’s also not a bad spot to be in. It’s a good problem to have. Exactly. Is there anything you didn’t like? Any fat downs out there? Uh just got to keep our feet moving. Um Heedle’s tripping penalty. Um he’s one of those players that shouldn’t get caught behind somebody. He’s got the speed to keep his feet moving. So it’s just early season uh bit of slop, you know, getting back up to the speed of NHL play. Also, he finished last season with the injury. Um so he hasn’t really played a game in a while. So, for him to get into these games and start getting some bumps and trying to get more confident in his body again is is big steps for him. But, uh, nice to see him get an assist on the power play goal, but I’d like to see a little more from him five on five. I was going to say with Heedle, it almost feels like he is got that kind of veteran trying to prove himself moment where it looks like he’s probably just trying to do a little bit too much out there to prove himself where he just needs to stay within his own game and do what he knows he can do. I Yeah, for sure. And I I think he’s feeling the pressure a little bit because a lot of the chatter even from Alvine and the coaches has been about Brandon Coots and how well he has shown in preeason and in the games and you know they’re they’re practicing him with the big boys right now to to be in the the home game on uh the first preseason home game uh in Vancouver. So, you know, they’re they’re really speaking highly of Coots and and you know, he doesn’t have the NHL body yet, but man, does the kid have the hockey sense and just the ability to to slow the game down anytime the puck’s on his stick. And so, I think Heedle’s feeling the pressure a little bit with some of these young prospects really playing above what we expected them to do at the point in their uh in their development. Look at Patterson, who we’re going to be talking about here shortly. Yeah. Well, that’s a perfect segue. Entrylevel contracts going out and it was I think last preseason game we were doing and you’re like, you know what, I feel like these boys probably deserve it. So, bam, just like that, as you usually do, you know what’s going on before anyone else. So, the Vancouver Conucks have agreed to terms with two of their prospects, which is the uh Riley Patterson and Gabriel Sherro. And Gabriel Shot was mentioned a lot because man, the motor on this kid, he was just out there doing everything he possibly could, right? So, um, great things for young prospects in this Conucks organization that they both get a threeleear entry level deal from the Canucks for sure. And with Patterson, I mean, I love that they got it done with him. Um, they could maybe move him now into Abbottzford. Uh it’s no secret that the Canucks are thin at the center ice position. Um you know, Atu Ratu is pretty much a lock to make the NHL team just basically in the sense that they can’t risk putting him on waiverss and sending him down because he will for sure get picked up by someone out there. Um that will turn him into a second line center and it’ll make us all cry. So Ratu has to be on the big club. So that leaves a hole in Abbottzford with losing him. There’s the potential that Sassin could also be up with the big club. That’s another guy who plays center down in Abbottzford uh quite often. So is the best place for Patterson’s development to go back to the Colts or do you put him in Abbottzford where he can start working with Mal Holtra on uh you know uh trying to win another Calder Cup back to back. So, it it’s a good spot for for that. And it speaks a lot to get uh a fourth round guy in 2024 and Patterson signed and a sixthround guy, I think, in this year with uh Sherat who just Yeah, like you said, the motor on the kid. Um it says a lot for our scouting that those deep round guys are getting signed to these entry- level contracts and are looking so good so early in their development. It makes me think about the old Detroit Red Wings when they were dominating all the time and they would find these guys in the third, fourth, fifth round and they would develop them for a nice long time in their minor leagues and then bam, they’d have someone ready to go. I should note with Patterson, we did discuss earlier in the year he was actually holding out from the Berry Colts, which he was playing for. So, he’s actually now been traded to the Niagara Ice Dog. So, he will be playing in Niagara this year, which should allow him to get a bit of a bigger uh role on the team as a center. So that is probably going to be better for his development. So I wanted to point that out for he finally got his wishes. Yes. Yes. I had forgot that he got his wish and got moved. Um but yeah, again, is the OHL the best spot for him even though he got moved to a spot where he’s going to get more ice time? Um, that’s just up to uh to Alvine and company, but uh I’m sure he would fit right in in Abbottzford and get uh get really going on his development working with Mel Holtra and and uh company down there. Yeah, I’m looking. So, he was born Patterson was born March 22nd, 2006. So, he wouldn’t be able to join Abbottzford until then because he’s only 19 right now and they they don’t have the new rule yet. So, I believe it’ll be either he’ll he’ll spend the season down there and then once his junior season is over, that’s probably the time they’ll bring him up and get him some experience there uh in the OHL. Absolutely. Yeah. Um KJ Brazy coming in and using his monthly membership message. Six months just in time for the Rusty and Dusty side show to say just the right amount of scruff. Thank you very much for being a member for six months. KJ Brazy, you beautiful man. You we talked a little bit about this earlier. Puts aggressive style because we weren’t really sure what was going to happen. Are we just going to see talk at 2.0? But part of me was like, man, maybe Foot Foot has that like delusions of grandeur as a former defenseman. He’s like, I want all the glory to be on the defenseman. So, he’s now we’re looking at four person rushes. We’re talking about like crazy four checks. The defenseman have been given Cart Blanch to jump up into the rush. Um, is this kind of what the vibe is moving forward for this Vancouver Conucks coached under coach Foot? Well, I mean, you look at the defenseman we have, every single one of them can move their feet. I mean, the worst skater now really when you look at the blue line is Tyler Myers. And yeah, he has his moments, but he can also get up and down the ice in, you know, three less strides than ever every other player in the league. So, it’s a good problem to have. And you know, it’s great to see the guys activating like that because yeah, it gives you that much more offense and it’s a big change from what we were forced to watch all season last year. That was like watching every game was like watching it on repeat. And it was probably the easiest thing in the world to defend. And it probably drove Foot nuts being on the defensive end of the bench and being like, “Oh, I could coach against this team. It’d be easy.” Right? So, it’s refreshing to see. Um, he said he doesn’t have much experience as an offensive coach, but he’s leaning on his assistant coaches to to help him out. And they are developing a a teamwork uh together as coaches just similar to the team has to work on the ice. And that’s one thing Foot really preaches is the team aspect of it. like no one guy is above the team and that includes the coaching staff. He’s not above any of those other coaches. They need to work together to all their strengths to put the best product on the ice and have the team ready to play against anybody. He talked about being adaptable. He said they’re not going to be a singular team. They’re not going to try the same thing every night because you can’t play that way against every team in the league. And that showed like the Canucks did great against certain teams and then did horrible against other teams and but they played the same structure every night. So it’s just really refreshing to see something new even though it’s only two games in. It has me excited for the regular season and to see some of the veterans like Person Besser and De Brusk get a little bit let off their leash to play offense. Um, Majorly Swerven says, “I’m gonna give away two tickets to a Conucks game. I don’t know which one yet.” That was his monthly membership message, 10 months as a member. So, thank you very much, Majorly Swerven. Um, the next one I we we’re going to talk about this already because um, Basil Pod Coulson did sign a three-year contract with the Evoners, which is good to see. Gets a big raise. He’s making just under $3 million a year for three seasons. So, great for him. But uh worst news came out and just awful. So great day for him and then it turned sideways. So for anyone who doesn’t know Dustin, can you let them know what’s happened now for Quad Coen? Yeah, I mean it was great news for him to get that extension. He worked really hard in uh in Edmonton to get his game to the NHL level. Um but unfortunately his his dad uh passed away in a just a a freak moment. Uh no one expected it coming. Uh so he has gone home to Russia to be with his family and will miss a little bit of training camp here, but uh you know congratulations to him on the contract. He he has really earned it. I would have loved to have seen him get a better shot here in Vancouver, but you know uh all the best to him and family right now. Uh cuz hockeyy’s the last thing that matters when when a family member is lost. Yeah, it’s tough. Very tough. Especially we saw this last year with Forbert. So take all the time you need Podzy. Like, he looks really, really good offensively. My only worry with him is just the defensive side and just getting used to the pro level. I think he’ll be like DPD, but he’s really impressed. Do you think the skating on Vlander is already NH already? Looks like it. Um, probably maybe get some a little bit more size so you could get a little harder of a stride. But yeah, I think he’s got the ability already like NHL caliber. The other thing like because I was talking with Dustin in our first intermission about this new system that target seems to be running and it seems to be very defense aggressive right like jumping up fourman rushes absolute craziness and for a guy like Tom Wellender that plays right into his wheelhouse. Yeah, that him and Quinn Huges I think and Mancini as well. Mancini’s got really good speed. I think those are the three defenseman that are definitely going to benefit from it. You’ve also seen it today with Mancini getting up in the play a lot. I’ve noticed that he’s kind of playing like a fourth forward most of the time he’s on the ice. But yeah, this system is going to definitely benefit the offensive defenseman. Yeah, even like a guy like Tyler Myers who I think has really benefited since but joined the team even as the u Oh, I’m I have the wrong name on on your thing right now. Let’s update that. You are not Dustin Boydell. Oh, you were Land. That was the thing I was thinking about as well. I was like, “Oh, which defenseman would work?” And I’m like, “Oh, Tyler Myers. He has those flashes of just being better than McDavid sometimes where he’ll just join the offensive zone and just all of a sudden he’s just dancing around everybody. He’ll score a goal. It’s crazy. He could definitely benefit. My only worry with him though and my other worry with the other defensive defenseman who maybe aren’t as fast is the getting back. You got to have forwards who are able to get back as well to help your defenseman if they’re not able to. And it seems like tonight that has kind of been the mantra already. You’ve seen Carlson covering the point. You’ve seen Sassin covering the point. Even Hudel back on the point who I don’t never really thought of as a super defensive guy, but if you can get guys like those to buy into that kind of a system, it creates that dynamic attack that is really hard to read I think for other NHL teams. Yeah, it’s it’s with Quinn Hughes will be a little easier to read as well because we always want to get Quinn Hughes involved. But yeah, definitely those bottom pair defenseman it could get a little surprising. Yeah. Yeah. Um, for a guy like Hoglander tonight, I noticed him a lot in the first period. I did not notice him a lot in the second period. Do we know if he’s even playing this second period? I noticed that uh Kratzov has taken his role. They were talking about it on commentary. Hoglander they think has left the bench. They can’t see. Um, so most likely we’re going to hear something about him tonight. I think he might be just precautionary. I think it might be the same thing with Garland. If it was a regular season game, he’d be playing, but they don’t want to aggravate it. And he’s been playing well, especially like with how he played in the first period. I would take him off the ice if he has a small inkling of injury. I think it’s a small thing. Yeah. Yeah. You never want to push it. It is just the season. So, there’s nothing serious going on here. Now, I look at another guy who I think through the prospects and through the training camp, I didn’t really get any vibes that he was going to go anywhere, but then the preseason starts and suddenly Chase Stillman has kind of been making a name for himself, really working hard out there, especially even at the end of that second period. His line was out there grinding away with Almond. Do you think Chase Stillman is a guy who’s going to push for a spot to be like maybe one of the first calls up from Abservert or do you think he’s pretty much going to be an AHL player for the whole season? I think he’s fighting to be a top AHL guy. I The thing is everyone’s fighting for a specific role. I think definitely when we traded for him, we thought of him as like a second, maybe third line, second at most kind of player in the NHL, he wants to fight to show that he can not only beat that top line in the AHL. He wants to impress Manny Malhotra. He also wants to impress the Vancouver Conucks. And I think I I agree with that. He’s definitely trying to be one of those guys who’s going to be like a Phil D Jeppy who will get called up if just in case we get hurt uh we get an injury. Yeah. Got a a member of chat Carly Isaac saying Hoglander will not return. So our instincts were right. He has left the game. So hopefully just for precautionary uh measures. It looks like it. I mean he didn’t slow down so he’s definitely still got it. Hope it’s probably just precautionary. Does it make you chuckle every time Hoglander scores a power play goal? Um, yeah. I mean, just love the kid, man. I just I want him to get more power play time and I noticed that he gets the PP2. I always want him to get in net front on PP1. He’s just not that great of a player. He gets the even strength goals. I’m happy to see him contributing on the power play because that could in improve his game. Now, we always can’t go through this whole intermission without talking about our goalender, Thatcher Demco, who did end up playing all through the first two periods. So, I believe he probably will finish it. Maybe toil comes in. Uh, wasn’t really tested all that much in the first period, but second period, you did see a little bit of action. How did you feel about his game so far? Honestly, with Demco, it’s just making the easy saves is really what’s important. I feel like he won’t pressure himself too much. It’s Demco. I mean, he’s a competitor. He’s going to make those amazing saves even if it’s in the preseason. But definitely right now it’s seeing how does he look. Does he look smooth in the net? That knee definitely will bug him. It’s if it was still like injured. I think he’s fully healthy from the looks of it. He looks fully healthy and ready to go. It’s different than last season. Yeah, he’s looking strong. I think that’s what it is is there was a couple times where he gave up a rebound and the reaction there was no hesitation. It was just immediate he moved to it. Yeah. And he’s also the best goalender of the league. He’s going to make the small saves look small. He’ll even make great great saves look easy. So, you’re confident in saying that the Vancouver Canucks currently possess the best defenseman and the best goalender in the entire NHL? Second best goalender. I’m not I’m not put I’m not putting him ahead of uh Hella Buck. Hellabuk is that good. Like I think he could be better than Hella Buck, but I’m not putting him ahead of the MVP of last season. And I think it’s the difference between a Demco and a Hellbuck and a comparison gets made sometimes. Uh but Hellbuck is one of those guys who’s more of a deep in his crease positional less reaction. He’s more about the percentages whereas Demco does that. But I also feel like Demco adds that extra athleticism. So do you think there’s a chance that Demco ends up playing him his way on Team USA for the Olympics or is it a is it already collusion? Yeah, it’s 100%. Like if he plays fully healthy and he plays that like Demco plays that Team USA are gonna be like, “Yeah, we made a mistake. Should have added him to the roster.” Like he’s such a good goalender. I think he beats out the likes of Autur. I forget who the other goalenders are for Team USA, but I think he he becomes the backup immediately. Well, I think the thing that blew my mind when they announced their orientation roster for Team USA, Joey Dord was on there and Demco wasn’t. So that was one where I was like, why is Dord there and not Demco? I thought isn’t he like Canadian as well? I thought it’s like a 50/50. He’s like he’s got both p I believe like one of his parents is one Canadian, one is American. So he could become play for Canada, but he had to do something last year before the four nations. It was too much paperwork. So they never end up using him anyways. Okay. Yeah. All right. Yeah, I think USA has the best goalending. But the fact I think they have the best goalending without Demco on it. So add Demco to it. Conor McDavid’s going to put pucks past those guys anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. Yeah, it’ll be weird because we did cover the Four Nations Cup here on Nothing Is Perfect, and it was weird cuz we were cheering for McDavid and Bennington and some guys I don’t really like. So, we’re going to be doing it again for the Olympics, only this time it’s going to be like 5 a.m. games, too. I could turn my mind off and be like, McDavid good. That’s like even Brad Marshon, right? We’ll cheer for him if he scores goals for Canada. Honestly, he grew on me. I I kind of like him now. It’s been long enough, eh? Yeah. So, there are a few players on this Konox roster that probably want revenge. Everyone’s heard about Pety’s revenge tour. Now, we’ve talked a little bit about Demco’s revenge tour. Uh, I believe that, you know, Bastard probably took a little bit of a slight not getting his call to the USA orientation camp. Is there anyone else outside of those three players that also wants revenge on this Vancouver Conucks roster? Uh, Neil’s Hoglander had a bit of a down season. And I could see him, he definitely showing it. Uh, revenge. I wouldn’t say revenge for Filipino, but I think definitely he wants to prove himself. He has like a a reason to really like push himself as like he has the jump up in the as the 2C. He looks great so far, I thought throughout the whole preseason. He looks like he’s bringing the best energy. Uh, in terms of revenge seasons, I’m not quite sure. I think you kind of hit all three of them except for Hoglander. feel like Hoglander is the only other guy cuz he had a down year and he just wasn’t as good and a lot of people are doubting him. So the other guy I wanted to ask you about was Lionus Carlson because the general consensus is now that he’s probably out of the three guys on that Abby line the one that’s going to end up making this roster is probably the 12 or the 13 forward maybe he works his way up to that third line possibly with a little bit of time on PP2. But Carlson, does he have what it takes to have a Dakota Joshua like season like from a couple years ago where Joshua ended up earning that big contract going off for a bunch of points that we didn’t expect from him offensively? Yes. I don’t think he’s got the I I mean, he’s pretty solid in the in a defensive role. I don’t think he’s got fully like as Joshua, he’s not going to be that PK shutdown guy, but I went to a lot of the Calder Cup uh playoff games last season. And the player who impressed me the most and the player I’ve been riding high on the most this entire off season is Lenus Carlson. So, I’m very excited to hopefully he gets in the lineup and I just want him to be on that fourth line. I feel like he’ll really succeed there. So, he’s not playing tonight, but I did want to get your thoughts on Braden Coots because he has shown very, very well. He shows that he’s got NHL level skills. The only knock on him so far is maybe he needs to obviously fill out a little bit and at 18 that’s not a surprise. And now I have heard discussion, okay, maybe he ends up being the 2C and Heedle’s out of luck. Now I’m starting to think after watching Atu Ratu play, which I haven’t been all that impressed. Is Atu Ratu the one that should be worried about Braden Coots at this point? I don’t think anybody should be worried about Braden Coots. And I know this will probably be a hot take. A lot of Kucks fans are very high on Braden Coots. A lot of them are saying, you know, he could make the NHL. I am not too sold on putting an 18-year-old who’s not built out his frame, who gets very tired along the boards against pro- NHL players in an NHL role consistently. I think nine games is fine. I think that’s the most he’s going to get. I feel like that’s the most as much as he’s shooting for a spot on the roster, I feel like that’s what he’s shooting for. I think we need to take a step back cuz we’ve done it with players like Aikido Hurrosce where we build a hype train and it doesn’t really pan out. We need to take a step back on Braden Coots. Really look at it realistically. He’s not going to be a full-time NHL this season, but what he’s shown is amazing. Don’t get me wrong. I am very impressed with Braden Coots. He looks so good. You need to let everyone know what happened with Aikido Herros because he will not be back with the atox next year. Yeah, he signed in Germany. I’m not quite sure which team in Germany Germany he signed with, but he also joins a teammate out there. I forget which one. Um I think it’s John Stevens who signed out in Germany as well. Abbottzford lost a lot of players um for this Calder Cup team, but that’s what it takes. That’s the price it takes to win. You ring in a bunch of guys who aren’t going to stick around. Especially in Abbottzford, it’s there’s no more there’s not that many long-term commit commitments. Mr. Kaklan, what can people expect when they tune in to your channel? We’re going to get our man Dustin Boydell on the line for our pregame show. So stick around. It is time for the Rusty and Dusty postgame show as we get Dustin Boydell back on the line here to get into the action to chat about what happened in this game and how it finished off. Cool. It’s easy. It’s nice when it’s easy like that. Without further ado, the silver foxell. What’s up, my dude? What a win. What a win. Very pretty. Excited though, cuz I mean to be fair, it was similar to last game where the Kraken had a very NHL veteran heavy team. This was a very NHL ready Canucks team. and a very very thin Calgary Flames team. So, good to see a win, but let’s just curb our enthusiasm a little bit. Some good stuff, but also some stuff to work on. Did you see anything more than I did on the Hoglander front with regards to whether or not he What was the deal? Why did he leave? Not really. Um, it could have been one of those moments of just better safe than sorry. Um, we heard it about Garland. Had it been a regular season game, he would have played tonight, but because it’s just a preseason game, it’s best to uh keep him off the ice for maintenance. Um, maybe Hoglander uh tweaked a little something or got hit with a shot and was feeling a little crampy or something. Who knows, right? like let’s hope that it’s just something minor. I didn’t really see anything happen where uh there was anything major that stood out that uh would knock him out of the lineup. So maybe it was something that was already ongoing. He played a period and and uh they were just like, “Okay, let’s not push this. Thanks for the goal. Thanks for getting our veteran count up to where we needed it to for this game. Take the night off.” Um, let’s let’s hope it’s something simple like that, but uh you’d hate to see Hoglander be uh be put back with a with an injury. Um, you know, he really looked good in that first period. Looked like he had some energy and uh hopefully there’s nothing serious uh coming down the the news pipeline tomorrow. Now, Tom Willander ends up getting two assists in this game. Uh was moving his feet really really good out there. I think probably played a little better than he did in the first preseason game. What did you see from the man who I think’s going to end up in the AHL? But man, after tonight’s game with the two assists, he might be making a case for himself. Yeah, you know, he he did have a much better game tonight um than the last one. Yes, he did make a better case for maybe making the NHL team, but I do think he still needs to prove it against NHL players. Um you saw against the Kraken where it was more NHL heavy team. He struggled to to uh move the puck quickly. Um was getting telegraphed a little more often with his passes tonight. It seemed like he corrected a little bit, but also there wasn’t a lot of talent that he was facing on the other the other side of the puck. So, you know, like I said, it’s hard to evaluate certain things uh to the full extent. Um, what we are seeing is all positive things. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to be negative or or downplay Wheellander at all, but I think he had a fantastic game. I still just need to see more from him against actual NHL players before I’m like, “Okay, this kid is ready to play in the NHL.” The difference between him and Mancini is Mancini is just that that little step ahead of him in the development. He’s one year older. He’s played NHL games for the Rangers. He played a couple games for the Canucks, filling in for injury, and he just looks ready to make that next step to the NHL level. And that’s where Mancini’s at for me. and he he just um you know I I really don’t think he needs to start in Abbottzford. I think Mancini needs to be our third right D up in the NHL at the beginning of the season and then whatever happens with Vlander if he develops fast and can come up and be that seventh D man, then so be it. Maybe we move forward out or we find a package for a for a better centerman or something. Um although Heedle looked really great tonight as well. So um you know he’s he’s showing up for that audition where you know the spotlight’s kind of on him in the preseason to to show out and and he had quite a good game tonight. Um did have a breakaway there where he got high stick. Didn’t get quite a good shot off but you know took the one right off the teeth. You don’t have to get hit hard there. No that stings like that. That’ll numb your whole face. you take it right on the teeth like that. So, uh you know, um good for him showing his speed and, uh controlling the puck a lot better. Picked his spot on the power play goal there, bottom corner, far side. Um showed nice patience with the puck and showed a goal scorers touch by picking that low corner, which is tough to do. I mean, it’s tough to keep that puck on the ice with a wrist shot the way he did, but um well done by him. Great game. Uh definitely the first star of this game was Filipedle for me. Um you know followed closely behind by Vlander uh as a second star. The third star was kind of like a a tossup. I think Lenus Carlson had a strong game. Victor Mancini I I think would probably be third star getting the goal and really strong game defensively as well. Um he’s had some really good plays in the Canucks end where he recovered the puck and got it out of the out of danger fast. Um he activated really well from the blue line. So did Wheelander tonight. Um both those boys did a good job of activating, getting involved in the play. Mancini gets involved with the rush and it just looks really fluid. Um Baines, Carlson, and Sassin, that line, I mean, you see what they were doing in the Calder finals. They were just clicking um on all cylinders until the lines started getting shuffled a bit and they started getting mixed up. But that line when those three were together uh was just dominating Calgary and putting it u and keeping it in their end all game uh anytime they were out there. So uh lots of good stuff happening tonight on the defensive end. The Canucks were getting caught a little bit with that more aggressive style that Foot’s trying to get them to play. Uh we saw it on the penalty kill there where Oman and Ratu kind of both got caught on the one side playing a little too aggressive. Um, they got to communicate a little better and one guy like before the puck drop. Um, you got to say like, I’m going to the to the to the point on this if this happens, you got to go through A, B, and C when you’re going to play that aggressively so that you know who’s going to push out to that far corner so that you don’t have both guys running out there. And then they kind of scrambled to get back into their box formation. and by the time they were back, the puck was already in in uh the dangerous dangerous position and then in the back of the net. So, those things are going to happen. This is what preseason is for. Um I loved what I saw offensively from this team. Just a very refreshing look of getting shots to the net as the priority. Um you know, finding the shooting lanes, having a guy in front of the net picking up that garbage or creating a screen. Orixen did an incredible job on Heedle’s goal. I mean, just blocking out the sun in front of the goalender there. Uh, I think Orixen actually had a very strong game today as well, getting involved physically, using his size. Well, I think he got kind of ripped off of on that penalty kill or penalty call just for being bigger than the guy. He absolutely buried Bean there on the on the wall. But, I think it was not late really. I I think the the refs kind of reacted to the injury and called the penalty after the fact, but that being said, he needs to keep playing that style of game, aggressive, finishes, checks, and that’s what’s going to make him effective as a big power forward and then just be that netfront presence. So, I liked some of the stuff he was doing tonight. And overall, lots of positive stuff defensively. I’m sure they’re going to talk about tidying up when they’re aggressive. they got to back each other up a little better. Uh you’re going to live and die by the same sword with that aggression. So, um there are going to be moments where you got to learn to dial it back a little bit, but uh overall, I really liked what I saw this game. Um, you know, we’ll have to see what happens when we get more veterans in, but this structure uh really points to um highlighting getting the puck to the net. And I’m excited to see, you know, a rejuvenated Besser and Pey and and just rejuvenated offensive guys um just kind of getting those chains broken free where there’s controlled entry and and we might score off the rush here or there uh when we have four men rushing rushing in. So, uh I’m looking forward to to the next few games here and then definitely looking forward to opening night now. So, uh, you kind of told me what you thought the three stars of the game were. So, just let’s review that right now. You said it was Phil Heedle as the first star, Willander as the second star, and Mancini is the third star is what you said. Those would have been my three picks. Yes. Boom. You nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. Bill Heel. Booya. I’m getting better at this analyst stuff, you know, for an amateur who just kind of decided to help you out. I’ I’ve been uh I’ve been getting the finger on the pulse here a little bit. Uh called the Patterson thing last week uh last game there. Next day he was getting his entry- level contract signed. I said I wanted to see more of them. So, um yeah. No, just uh overall very pleased with the with the outcome of this game. You love to see the power play 50%. Um, you love to see the shot totals. They haven’t even put the third period shot totals up there yet and we’re at 21 uh shots for the game. So, let’s give it an old refresh and see if we can get them. Nope. Just uh all positive things going into a new season where we just need to look forward and forget about what happened in the past. Uh I like that the players seem to be buying into the new structure. They look refreshed, rejuvenated. The young guys are pushing the veterans hard to um hold on to their spots, which I’m I love seeing. And uh yeah, there’s going to be some tough tough choices for these coaches to make here in the next uh next couple weeks when it comes to final cuts. I think the thing that impressed because we talked about Heedle in the first intermission and how it seemed like maybe he was trying to do a little bit too much. He did settle in. But the other thing that’s impressive is obviously then suddenly his linemates went into a blender, right? There was one point he was playing with Stillman and Mckran. But I mean, you’re playing with two guys who are not going to make the NHL and he still did really really well. And obviously, like you said, that perfect placement right along the ice on that shot from uh from the half courts there was great by him and and that’s the kind of thing you want to see from your second line center. Oh, for sure. Taking two guys on opposite spectrums of not making the NHL, right? like Mckran’s kind of been a journeyman AHL guy. He’s 31 years old. He’s had 123 NHL games. Like he’s had a few chances in the show where and then you got uh Stillman who was a 29th overall pick for New Jersey. He’s been traded twice on his entry level contract. I mean, he really had very poor numbers last year in the AHL. Um, you can’t tell me he didn’t fit in the Penguins depth chart somewhere to get some NHL games last year when he got traded to them at the deadline. Um, and then immediately is flipped for Sheilovs. Uh, I just worry that he is not he’s an attitude problem maybe um, when it comes to his development and and thinks he deserves maybe a spot because he was a first round pick. And so you’ve kind of seen it a little bit where he’s been a bit laxidasical going into the corners and he gets beat uh beat in those board battles. Um isn’t the strongest on his edges. So I do think he’s definitely destined to the AHL. I’d love to see Manny get his hands on him and see what he could do to maybe turn his development around because first round picks are first round picks. Um you know there’s a reason why you’re picked in those top 32. So, we’ll see what happens with his development. And then, uh, yeah, with Mckran, he’s just here to be a maybe a call up if we need him cuz he’s kind of like a guy who can fill in any any role kind of on the fourth line. Um, so if we need a fourth liner to come in for injury purposes, he’s kind of one of those insulators that can go up and down through uh waiver free, waiver exempt, even though he’s 31. It’s a two-way contract that they’ve signed him to. So, um, yeah. Uh, not a lot of negative things to say about tonight other than the overaggression kind of biting them a couple times, but overall pretty good structure defensively. I like the aggressive style because it it leads to a faster breakout um because when you’re pushing defensively and you kind of can tip a puck off a guy’s stick, you catch them off guard and you’re you’re heading the other way faster than they can recover. And uh I liked seeing a lot of that tonight uh with the Canucks off the rush getting a lot more chances than we’ve seen in in an entire year. It was just so refreshing. My two early prediction is Chase Stillman is the next Lionus Carlson. Yeah, it could take a couple years marinating but uh and then finds finds his purpose. Yeah, could be. Yeah, I think he’s got that like that ferociousness in him and I think he’s got the wheels for it. But like I mean Carlson’s been in Abbottzford four years, right? So it’s not like Selma’s going to do a DPD and be up here by the middle of the season, but give him a couple years for development down there. And if he does manage to round his game out and and figure out what it takes to be a full-time professional hockey player, I could definitely see him having a similar impact, especially on the Avisox as uh Lus Carlson did. No, for sure he’s going to get his shots down there in Abby to to show what he can do. And and that’s what I’m saying with I I’m excited to see him get uh Manny Manny’s hands on him like cuz we saw Lenus Carlson’s development just skyrocket last year as well along with I mean every one of those guys that we’ve been talking about all prospect camp and the showcase and then into training camp all these bubble guys. I mean, they had all a few of them had started to fall off the radar until um the coaching change last year and and Mal Holtra and Mahesh and those guys got in there and totally changed everything. Uh you got Henrik and Daniel helping out down there as well. Now, I mean, you got these really, really talented NHL, like former NHL players guiding these young play uh young players development. And uh I just really like where we’re at um with restocking the cupboard given that we had sacrificed so much through 2011 to to to push to try and get back there. We traded away a lot of draft picks through that 2011 to 2017 period and it really left us short-handed for a couple years. But it’s nice to see our scouting has come through and and uh found a few gems in some late rounds and uh the youth really looks promising where there’s going to when you when you’re sitting here after two games in the preeason knowing that there’s going to be some extremely difficult decisions for management and coaching to make, that’s a really good place to be in. So, you know, just all positive things leading to uh pushing forward to, you know, the Conucks pushing for a playoff spot and Abby defending their Calder Cup. We’re going to finish this poll question together. I’m going to ask you locked on Kucks showed up earlier and they’re like, “Will Garland pop off and get a 60 plus point season? You can say yes, no, he’s going to get 30 goals for sure or nah, his injury will get worse.” What did you answer? Uh, that one’s just for me. I I I had a hard time answering that one. Um, I I said no, just cuz I just don’t think he’s going to be put in the same situations offensively that he was last year. Um, when you look at the depth chart, I think he’s going to be put more in a third line checking like just wear down the other team role where yeah, he’s still going to get his chances offensively, but nowhere near what he was getting playing as a second line center last year or second line winger last year. Um, so yeah, I I just don’t think he gets over the 60 point, maybe 60 points, but it’s it’s going to be a struggle this year. Uh, just because he’s going to be further down down the lineup. Everyone disagrees with you. At least 63% do. They said yes, he will be 60 points plus. But now that you say that third line thing, do you can because now I’m even picturing it, maybe the Conucks third line is going to be Atu Ratu at center with Garland on one side and Evander Kane on the other because that could be a very tenacious third line as well. And Ratu does have a body, but he doesn’t necessarily have that dog in him. So having two guys on his wings that will go in and dig things out, that might be a good combo because I feel like Ratu has more goals to give than he we’ve seen so far from him. Exactly. And like I’m not saying Garland’s not going to get points. Like he’s still going to be offensively dangerous and capable of putting the puck in the net. I just don’t think he’s going to get the same number of chances that he was given last season. So, last thing before we go, um, last comments on Thatcher Demco. We he finished out the second period, got a little bit more action, and then we also had Tool Pilo coming in for the third period. Tell me how you felt about the second period for Demco. And then what did you feel about when you saw uh Toolo in that in the third period who didn’t end up giving up a goal in that third period despite a couple good chances? I, you know, I thought G, I think Demco looked very solid, um, for his first game action in a while. Um, made a couple of pretty acrobatic saves. Didn’t really look slow at all. Didn’t labor, you know, uh, we didn’t really see him leaning over on that knee, kind of checking it at all like we have seen in the past. Um, granted, he didn’t really have a lot of work. Uh, I think he only faced 12 shots until he was removed from the game. So, really not a tough night for him. Um, the one that got by him was just kind of a unfortunate deflection and and you know, he didn’t really have a chance on that one. And uh, but other than that, really didn’t give up any big rebounds. His puck control was really good. And and I mean, he said he feels solid. He feels the best he’s felt in years. And I mean, he’s a Vzna caliber goalie. What can we say? Like, we just have to trust him. And and I mean, he’s going to back it up. He has in the past. Um, you know, if he says he’s healthy, I trust him. If he says he feels the best he’s felt in years, I’m expecting him to come out of the gates and just, you know, um, be Demco of old. Yeah. So, toilo gets the third period that. So, he got half the game on against Seattle. he got to that third period here. Do you think he gets a little bit more time in the preseason or um will they now be running with Lanin and Demco for the rest of the preseason? I think what we’ll probably see is to get one period in Lanin’s first start. Um which will probably be the next game. Yep. And then after that we’ll probably see Demco, two periods, Lanken in one period. And then the final game of the preseason, we’ll probably see Demco play the whole game just for conditioning purposes. You imagine if they start Demco on Friday. I mean, if Demco wants it, right? Like that’s the thing is like if he wants to start, who are they to deny him? He if he thinks he needs the rep, they’re he’s going to play, right? Like I think that’s my problem. Somebody’s got to stand up to him because Demco has proven that he doesn’t know how to control his own workload. And I hope this recent injury spout that he’s been through has taught him that he needs to dial things back a little bit. And I got no problem with him being one of the hardest working goalies. But foot is still the head coach and still needs to put his foot down, put foot on ch and make sure that Demco doesn’t get overworked because all every single we’ve had Demco has four different coaches so far. This is while Fifth will be his fourth and every single one’s like, “Oh, Demco’s playing really really good. We’re going to play him every damn night.” And that’s not what we want to see. So, I’m hoping, like you said, they start lanking it on Friday. I I hope so, too. And realistically, I think that’s what will happen. Um, I think this coaching staff so far has shown they have a pretty good handle on how they’re going to uh roll out their guys in the preseason. They have a pretty set uh pretty set way that they’re going to do it. Um, I think uh, yeah, I I think Friday we’ll see a pretty vett veteranheavy lineup uh, with Lankin in in goal and then uh, going forward I think it’ll be mixing in a couple of those young guys that are still on the bubble. But, uh, after tomorrow it’s it’s pretty much the cuts are going to happen and then it’s pretty much they got the last couple games here. They got to get ready for the regular season. So, you got to get the guys in there running the systems, running power plays and game situations and stuff like that. So, um yeah, be interesting to see what happens in the next 48 hours before the next game. Over under on eight players getting sent back to AHL or Junior tomorrow. Oh, it’s got to be over. They just got so many people still at camp. Like when you look at the list um from the other day, the last day in Pentictton, when they were still running group B and C and they had a game going, like there’s got to be some deeper guts than the like seven junior guys they said or seven guys they dealt with the other day. This is a very long list of players. Insane. That is like this at this point too, right? Like let’s see 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13. They have 14 defenseman, right? I’m not even going to count the forwards cuz I can’t count that high because I’ve only got 20 toes and fingers. But look at we still have like Well, I guess some of these guys have been sent down now. Um but still that’s six goalies still and they they don’t even have their seventh goalie up here right now. Yeah. No, I expect like someone to be sent to Kalamazoo here in the next day and uh a couple guys I’m sure there will be a platoon of guys sent down uh to start working out with Abbottzford and getting ready for their uh training camp on October 1st which starts uh next Wednesday. The Vancouver Canucks preseason gets continues against the Calgary Flames down the number one in Abbotsford. After falling in the preseason opener to the Kraken on Sunday they look to bounce back. With a line up that is sure to have a few more regulars than the one that dressed in Seattle the Canucks look to give the fans in Abby something to cheers about.
