Trey Murphy III on vibes in practice | Pelicans Training Camp 2025

Patrick, kind of tell us uh about the first day of camp kind of what did you saw all day? A lot of energy out there. Uh everybody’s ready to play. Everybody was uh really excited to get out there on the court and uh be together. I guess what what was kind of the message from the coaching staff first day? Um message from the coaching staff is just be aggressive uh offensively and defensively. Um talk, share the ball. Similar messages that we’ve had in previous years. I know yesterday you I know you jokingly said it, but I think you were kind of serious and you joked about being a hater in the past and keeping the very serious about that. Do you do you I hate to say do you play angry or do you all kind of practice with kind of that energy or or is that just something that you worry about off the court? Uh I mean I just try to play basketball. I don’t there’s not really a lot of thought process going on when I’m out there. I mean obviously play hard, compete at a high level. I think our practice is very competitive and so it uh should bleed out to the game. What’s kind of the vibe surrounding the team, you know, for for this first day? Like, how are the vibes around this group? Uh, one of the highest vibes I’ve uh seen in my fifth year. Yeah. You know, but um yeah, it’s definitely one of the more energetic practices that we’ve had at the start of camp. So, really excited to get started on this year. Why do you think that it’s been like that? Why do you think it’s been that way? Um, compared to others, you know, we got a new group. There’s a lot of fresh energy in here. We got a lot of young guys here. So, I just think everybody’s ready to play and ready to prove themselves. the same coach to just practice feel a little bit different with like Joe Dumar’s front of things. Yeah, sure. I mean, I think a big part of this is a new group, so everybody’s trying to make sure they get their imprint on the game, imprint on the team, and so um we’ll really see what goes on tonight at the practice. It’s still real early, but how do things kind of feel different with Jordan Puerto R? Uh he’s really talkative. That’s that’s a really good thing about him. He’s really talkative. He speaks his mind. He uh try to talk things out and pushes pace. So, I’m really excited to get him on the court. How do you feel about the spacing, you know, that a guy like Jordan Pool can can bring for this team and and the spacing that you bring? That combination of spacing with uh, you know, other great defensive pieces as well. Like how much do you think this team compliments each other? Really well. I think this is probably one of the better, you know, complimented teams that I’ve been on and I think we all going to work really well together and uh be able to compliment each other’s games. I know that you’ve been here just right for 5 years. It just looks different. I know there was like words and certain phrases and now it’s just like one goal. Is that do you all notice that or is it just kind of simplified like we’re just here for one thing? I don’t really look at anything around here. I just try to look at the hoop for the ball in the basket. That’s all. Is the setup and chemistry going to be one of the biggest things you guys going to need to work on? Absolutely. That’s the biggest thing last year is we have to establish chemistry late because guys were in and out of the lineup. So, God willing, we’re all healthy and we’re able to establish some more chemistry. Two weeks ago, you guys won 49 games, almost top six. last year uh with you, Zion, and Herb with good zero games where all three of you played together. How uh exciting is it to have like those guys back together, guys that you’re real familiar with? It was going to be scary for the league. So, I’m I’m very excited to get back on the court with those guys and uh you know, get back on a on a winning track. What do you guys see from Fierce, you know, finding his way, figuring out where he fits in? Uh he’s really really athletic. He’s really quick, really fast, and uh he uses athleticism to his advantage. He’s going to play fast for us and uh defend at a really high level. So really excited to see him on the court too. We saw that you used to break a drive throughout the year. You know before the injury thing started, you know, looking a lot more promising. How do you keep that momentum going into the new team? Same mindset. Get the ball, make good plays and uh try to get a basket and try to get a shot at the time. You said it’s going to be scary for the league. How scary is this going to be? We’ll see. We’ll see on October on October 22nd. Do you think this team kind of uh knows that uh its potential at all like like these guys considering the combination of championship caliber players and also guys that obviously have had success in this league as well? Um I don’t know how much we really think about it. I think biggest thing is just going out to competing each day uh one practice at a time, one day at a time and uh figuring out from there.
