Spencer Rattler talks Week 4 at Buffalo Bills | New Orleans Saints
Good. Good. How do you feel about the uh work that’s kind of gotten in here over the course of this week responding to last week? Yeah, feel feel good. There’s good good energy coming in the building like we have to. Um you know, guys aren’t moping around heads down. We got a another week ahead of us. Um got to attack it. You know, another great opportunity and we got to have a better showing for sure. What’s been kind of the I don’t know if there’s, you know, a message that everybody has kind of rallied around or anything for this week or anything like that? Yeah, just our standard, you know, um we got to hold a higher standard and that starts with our leaders on the team and um you know, we’re going to do a great job with that and I think everybody’s bought in, everybody’s dialed in and we had to go out there and play at a higher level um from here on out. So, that’s the mindset and we’re just ready to attack. I think it’s for to fight that urge to press and try to do too much because you’re in this situation where 0 and three and everybody wants to, you know, do their thing to to turn this thing around. Is it hard to, you know, try to fight that tendency to do that like with everybody and what they’re doing? You or just every or teammates, you know? Yeah. Um, I mean, yeah, you definitely don’t want to do more than you’re asked of or go out of your own zone. You want to do your job at its highest level and that that’ll take care of itself. If we all do that together and play complimentary football with all three phases, um, these games will be a lot different. So, I think that’s what it comes down to. Uh, we can’t beat ourselves and that’s what it starts with. Um, we just can’t beat ourselves and we will have a chance. So, uh, you can’t go out there and and do what we did last week and expect to win. Spencer, what what about you individually? I mean, you spent the whole summer in competition atmosphere. Is it something you have to like resist an urge or or like learn to deal with like not try to be like, I have to have a good game this week or I don’t know what the status will be next week. Yeah. You know, you can’t worry about that cuz that’s when you could really um not play to your ability. Um, you got to go out there and just play as good as you can. Um, play with high energy. Um, try to make the plays when you’re there and, um, you know, for me, I think just keep building. Keep building. What what we’re doing is right, the process is right, and the outcome will take care of itself. We just got to keep going, uh, keep chipping away at these days and, um, you know, it’ll turn out fine. How about dealing with sort of the antsiness or the the pressing that could come with you guys are putting together a lot of 12 play drives, 16 play drives, but sometimes that’s not adding up to points. Like the desire to try like I know we keep talking about what plays are there, what plays aren’t there down the field, but like is that something you have to try to convince yourself not not to try to force or is that something you do have to work for more? Um, you know, it’s got to be the right time, right moment. We got to have the right look. Um there was a few times in that last game obviously I was just trying to put them up because we’re down I mean depending on where you’re at we were down three four scores and you got to be aggressive. Um but you don’t want to just go out there and turn the ball over. Um cuz then you’re really going to have a bad turnout. So we got to play to our rules, play to our uh progressions and plays and you know we’ll dial up more shots and get more aggressive um here going on out. I think we need to. We will. Is is part of it like Mel was talking about like uh mix down the ball. You know, it’s like part of that just like getting getting the run game going and then you can build more stuff off of that. Yeah. I mean, no doubt. Whatever. Yep. You got to, you know, set up your your action game with your run game and um you know, if they they want to present any type of look where we can get a shot going, we got to hit it. And um you know, that’s something we’re we’re grinding on, getting extra reps on. Um but again, you know, you get caught in a game where it’s 28-3, defense knows it’s a heavy drop back game. They’re going to be in shell and try to take the roof off. So, um it’s a tough ask, but you got to try to get it done and and try to find those holes in those zones, but um all depends on where you’re at in the game. If we started out cleaner and score was tighter, it would be a whole different story, but it’s kind of the flow of the game. How do you talk about Buffalo’s defense specifically passing to their second lead right now? A lot of disguise. Um they’re very good at, you know, not showing you what they want to do um till post snap. Um heavy communication. They’re very dialed in on their details and their scheme. Um but a lot of disguise. They fly around. They got obviously Ed Oliver, Ed Oliver up front. He’s a, you know, game wreck. We got to have a good plan for him. Um smart guys at safety, good guys at corner and linebacker as well. So we got to um have a good plan and go out there and and not, you know, we got to play to win. That’s what that’s we got to play to win. Go out there and just let it rip and um go out there and and make something happen. You mentioned after the game that you wanted to work more on scramble drill like that second phase. Yeah. What how first of all, how do you work on that and second like what does better mean to you? Like how does that work? It’s a great question. Um you know how we work on it? We worked on it today in drills, scramble drills. You know that’s something we have to harp on. Um there’s so many little rules and details you need to know in the scramble game because it’s such a big part of the game and um feel like as a group we could all take a step. So that’s something we’re obviously going to have to use and that’s some where the biggest explosive plays come out of is scramble drill. So we have to be dialed in and get open when we do scramble cuz there will be opportunities to scramble and um you know that’s when big plays happen. I mean a lot of a lot of the big plays across the league are off scramble drills so especially in the red zone. So, um, we got to keep harping on that and keep working that and that’ll come to life in in game. When it comes to rules and guidelines in in this round of drills, is that something that’s pretty static across the league or are there small nuances in terms of how each team? Pretty static across the league. I mean, it’s all just spacing and and and having this little savviness to get open, you know. Um but yeah, you know, there’s teams that are really good on it and uh you know, we can be one of those teams with with the guys we have and uh being able to extend and scramble, that should be one of our strengths. In those situations, is there you have to kind of resist the urge to chuck one across the field like there’s situations where guys like why I think a was open but it was like running one way and like cuz I think Cam W throw like that. It’s like coaches probably aren’t telling you let’s do that again. Let’s not you know that’s risky. um you don’t want really want to do that, but if it works out, it works out. You know, you got to play ball to some extent, but it’s like a cardinal sin is throwing back across the field. Uh we try to get one in the game. Obviously, different situation, fourth down, got to have it. Uh just weren’t on the same page, but we’re going to continue to rep it. Um certain times you have to be aggressive and try to make that play where it might be risky, but we need the play. So, um that’s how I look at it. You talked about the scramble drills and whatnot and some other areas where you’re all looking to get better, but when you kind of evaluate this offense, what’s like the number one thing that y’all need to improve on here to uh in that regard? Penalties. Um I’d say that’s the number one thing pre- snap uh and post snap, just procedural errors. Um you see when we don’t have that, we move the ball well versus anybody. Uh we’ve played, you know, three good defenses so far and um we move the ball, but we got to be better on third down and um you know, that comes with having positive plays on first and second down. So, um I would say, you know, just being clean, playing clean ball, and then converting on third down. Um and then getting a couple more explosives throughout the game. When when you are uh like talking about like going up against a defense that does the skies stuff, obviously that’s like trying to confuse you, right? So, like how do you prepare going up against this? Do you do you think about, okay, they’re in this look, I’m anticipating them shifting to this look, post snap, or like how do you do it? Yeah, there’s a lot of different um things to look at as you go through your read and pre- snap and then post snap. It’s going to be a completely different thing. Uh they could be showing this and getting to a totally different coverage. So, you got to be dialed in with your eyes post snap and uh trust your progression um and just go through it and try to try to find the open guy. But, uh, yeah, they do a good job of, you know, making the quarterback think and making you be a little patient. Um, so we got to be good in that area. Is it really the sort of gap that people talk about worrying about sort of that rotation post snap when you’re in shotgun and have to bring your eyes down and then back up? Is that really as much of a concern as Not really. No, I wouldn’t say it’s that big of a concern. Um, just got to catch a snap. Obviously, that’s first and then you got to get your eyes up and uh you got a few seconds or less to get it done. So, um yeah, just got to It’s all at the same time. Yeah. Spencer, uh during this this start, has there been a player that’s kind of stepped up as the vocal leader and have y’all needed that to to rally together? Just saying the whole team. Yeah, I mean Cam was talking after the game just how, you know, corrections start on the plane right after the game. He was saying he and Deario were two of those guys. Has anyone like stepped up or have y’all felt like y’all needed that as a team? Yeah, I mean, uh I think Deario does a great he has a great message for us all the time. Um win or loss in in the locker room after practice, you name it. He’s uh has the right message and then, you know, obviously, you know, he’s our he’s our leader and our our vets, they they do a great job of that. And um you know, I think I think we’re we’re good in that area. you know, we we got good playerled um leadership and I think that’s one of our strong suits and just got to keep doing that. One of the uh one of the other reporters asked Kell about this saying that Miss Benson was at practice today. Does she give you words of encouragement after you know an 03 starter or just not really just kind of from afar? Yeah, I mean she’s the sweetest lady. She’s always there in the locker room after giving us all a hug one by one and um you know she she wants to see us play hard and obviously get some wins here soon. So, we got to do that. And, uh, you know, pretty much all I got for you right there. But, she’s awesome. Coming off, you know, the tough starts the season. Kell said that, you know, you guys have had, you know, really good conversations. How much do you feel based on those conversations that he’s been confident in you? I mean, he says he is, but how much confidence is his coaching staff kind of give you? They give me a lot of confidence. You know, uh, let you go out there and play, lead the ship, and, you know, I feel good about it. you know, we got to all play together and play cleaner and um you know, we’ll get this thing turned around. So, there’s a lot of good, but obviously a lot of lot of uh stuff to clean up, a lot of corrections and and we know that. So, we’re it’s not like we’re not working it and not trying to get better. We’re grinding away at it and uh you know, the product will take care of itself if we keep having the right process. Thank you.

I think he needs to be more vocal with the offensive players
If the rest of the players on offense AND defense played with the determination Rattler has, this team might be 2-1 right now.
If they play like a team possessed and win in overtime or push the bills
Heβs gonna elevate the whole team if that happens
Just show up and play to win forget the hype with the bulls and just play
He seems pissed. I love it.
Spencer, if you want to turn this around. Itβs got to come from you! You are the team leader not Demario. Demario is only the leader bc Drew is gone. You have to be that guy, or this team is toast.
There needs to be team leadership from the QB position. Every team has it, or needs it. Just saying, I know Ratt is young, but so what.
Looks like he's ready to take another beating
Spencer your a Good Youngman go out and play your game! Your number 2 in the League in Completions! Take with the Defense Gives you and play clean Football Youngman! Also Sunday is your 25th Year on the Planet! Ball Out for your Birthday Youngman! Remember Troy Aikman started his Career 0-11 β€! And in his 4th Year they Won the Superbowl. So forget about your Record! Just Get better Every Game Youngman and you and Kellen will be Fine! Remember any Given Sunday in the N.F.L. Remember 6 teams or 0-3! And no one ever one the Superbowl in the 1st three weeks!
He certainly has the talent to compete. The team's performance is not his fault. There are things he can improve on but the rest of the team and coaches have to step it up in order for him to hone his skills.
I think next week is the week you guys should turn it around
This man looks scary af lmao
π€·πΌββοΈ how can we believe this with the sting of embarrassment of last week still lingering!?
As a Bills fan, I respect this guy. He fought hard in college. Played in many meaningful games. He's tough, and has a bright future.
Rattler there's no doubt in my mind you are the saints franchise QB!!! i just hope to god you dont leave us or ill cry lmao
We are huge underdogs against the bills and definitely need my saints to prove the haters wrong and pull of the biggest upset of the season and be the first team to beat the bills and josh Allen this season let's go saints who dat.ππ―π
Rattler played good
I can't wait to hear the excuses after Buffalo
Keep pushin! Youβre going to get that monkey off your back this week vs Buffalo!
Iβm telling you right now this guy is NOT the problem very level headed and smart
Vikings didn't do anything that next week. What a waste of an overtime win! Same old Vikings 0-4 in the Superbowl. Never one the Big One to Save that Franchise and Fan Base Life!
Well here it is, this is the Saints Superbowl. If you are Spencer Rattler and you look over on the other side and see the ultimate competitor in Josh Allen, I wonder if that will bring out the best of him????
