[White Noise Pod] Joe Mazzulla used make the winners of scrimmages run to “reward them with running” and to “change their mindset”

This just seems dumb
Idk about that
It may sound stupid but with this psychopath I’d reserve judgement until we know what the losers had to do.
um what. this is idiotic
The winners had to run…on a bed of the losers.
Joe Mazulla is the Steven Segal of the NBA
Not even surprising Joe is insane 🤣
Title makes no sense
This is so stupid it actually makes sense. Associating winning with hard working and putting extra effort.
I mean, if you really think about it, it’s kinda like playing winners court. If you win, you keep playing, and if you lose you sometimes(depending how many courts/people/teams there were) had to sit there and wait a couple games before you got another shot to play again.
This sounds bad until you learn that the losers each had to submit a 2000 word essay on *The Town* by the end of the week
Can’t wait to watch the Celtics without a clear talent advantage, so we can call this goofy stuff goofy and don’t have to act like this guy is some genius.
Well the reward for winning is more work. At one point the Celtics only had themselves to follow. I like hearing stories like this from Muzulla to Boylen to Phil Jackson bringing in their little gimmicks and philosophies across all spectrums of cool to what the fuck
Is it like a victory type of sprint or is it actually just more training fr, cuz if it’s the second option, that sht is stupid
I’ve heard of this tactic before, basically your reward for winning is that you reserve the right to keep getting better than the losers. You’re getting extra reps/extra conditioning meanwhile the losing team was already worse and isnt getting the chance to lessen the gap with extra work.
There’s also the way that White explained it, in terms of changing the mentality that conditioning is a “punishment”.
For those of you who don’t understand, the important part is the message it is sending, Derrick said it himself. Dont let up, don’t relax when you are up. Pretty poignant message especially for a team that has seemingly let go of the rope when up in a few crucial moments over the years.
I already see comments saying how dumb it is and I know there will be more. It’s not like this was an everyday thing. Also, it must have been hilarious.
Half of you are programmed to be snarky online and the other half have never played a sport or committed yourself to anything competitive in your life.
He’s a fucking genius
Corniest and most overrated coach in the NBA by far but is getting carried by one ring with the most well constructed team this century even though he blew two series in which his team had home court advantage in 3 years
It’s like the inverse of Giannis, who made his coaches and girlfriend (while carrying their infant son) run sprints when he misses free throws.
> Antetokounmpo added a wrinkle to the routine. If he missed his free throws, his coaches would need to run and he would need to watch. Seeing other people pay for his mistakes was torture for Antetokounmpo, and this is a common motivational strategy used by high school coaches everywhere.
>
> That wasn’t enough. He invited Riddlesprigger and their 10-month-old son, Liam, to the gym. Now, Antetokounmpo had to hit his free throws or go through the torture of watching Riddlesprigger run with Liam.
My football coach used to make anyone who was late or screwed up do extra sprints after practice. He called them “opportunities” as in they are an opportunity to get better. Weirdly, after a while, some guys actually started sticking around to do them on their own accord, because if you’re doing your best why wouldn’t you take the extra opportunity to get better? A little different but maybe there’s something to that mindset.
I dont get it
sounds like a great way to dread winning
joe mazzulla is a crazy person, not even just a tough coach, but deranged
I take this as they were able to do a victory lap while the losers watched 😂
more ASMR Mazzulla stories
growing up i started to hate running and saw it as punishment because in basketball practice thats what running was. i believe this is why some guys don’t run back on defense or hustle.
most of the people i know that really *enjoy* running and get “runners high” never really played basketball or at least organized hoops.
joe might’ve cooked
proper psycho stuff
Mazzulla is a ferret – if you just said ‘no thanks’ to the extra running what’s he gonna do, yip at you?
My high-school coach had us do this, not trying to hate but this is nothing revolutionary
I love joe man
I know this sub loves Mazzulla and him “being a psychopath”, but this is the kind of shit that wears thin when you aren’t winning games.
Exactly right. Exercise is not punishment.
Cringe lord supreme
reward him back with the fk u
I don’t buy 75% of what Mazzulla says.
It makes sense. In most jobs, the better you are at your job, the more work you end up doing.
You finish first? Well here’s more work since you have time. You did your work perfectly? Well help fix other people’s work because they can’t do it right. You reliable? Well here’s more responsibility on top of what you do already.
If you’re doing the most work, you’re probably the best at the job… that’s why starters play the most minutes.
Can we get a report option for “OP is lazy”?
If you want to raise the quality of posts in the sub maybe we should start with removing any where the OP couldn’t even be bothered to proofread the title first.
