Since this week has been very close, I wanted to bring up a topic, the MVP, if none of the guys are in discussion right now, I would like them to be someday, if I remember correctly in 2019 Tatis JR finished third and Manny was in discussion right now, I can't remember the year. I would like that in the not too distant future and with our metrics, one of the guys would be in discussion to win the award, it would be great to see a San Diego Padre there.

Short season but Tatis deserved it in 2020, imo. He also finished 3rd in 21. Manny’s had a couple top 3 since he’s been here (2020, 2022)
Close, but no cigar, as they say…
Tatis should get votes this year but will probably finish somewhere 5-10
Tatis was our best shot but he hasnt been the same player since the injury and suspension. Maybe he can turn it around at some point but there are a lot of games in the books now since the injury so it’s feeling kind of like he is who he is at this point.
Even if he does kick it back in to gear, as long as Ohtani is putting up the video game numbers he is, it’s going to be hard for anyone in the NL to overcome that with his dual threat.
CR all the way
1) why bring up MVP post in the Pads sub (Cal BTW)
2) Is this a bot post? Didn’t post for 5 years, and now for 1 months all over only the Pads sub? Always has perfect spelling and punctuation?
I think our next Mvp is going to come from Merrill. He’s got the defense to rack up 10 war and if he can go 30-30 as he grows into being a major leaguer it would be hard not to give it to him, outside of ohtani obviously.
Judge is better but they won’t give it to him
I think Tatis can do it next year if he can finally have a consistent season. He started off and is ending the season strong. Just needs that middle part of the year.
Hopefully his power stroke has been fixed.
Giving MVP to someone who only hits well over someone who hits well and plays elite defense (at arguably the hardest defensive position, no less) will never make sense to me.
Hot take: of all the players on the roster, I think Merrill has the best shot at an eventual MVP. If he takes a few more steps forward offensively and maintains excellent CF defense, he could absolutely lead the league in WAR depending on what Ohtani does that year lol
tatis has the talent. just needs a consistent season.
Tati started the year as an MVP favorite in April, but cooled off significantly, probably another injury he was playing through. He’s not even in his prime years in confident we’ll get MVP-level Nando at some point. This October would be nice for example.
If you add Tatis’ defensive WAR to his offense he is basically the same as Ohtani
MVP should always be for the player that takes his team to the next level. If either Cal or Aaron were not on the team, which team would be worse? That is the player the MVP should goto. I kinda think for the Padres Team MVP, either Pivetta or Morejon, with position player being Sheets. All 3 of those guys are key to where the Padres are and without any of the 3, Padres would NOT be in the playoffs. Did not include any of the post trade players, but each has also contributed. Overall for the season, those 3. I did not include any of the big names as they are expected to be above the value of other teams players.
