BIG UPDATE: NEW YORK RANGERS ADDRESS JT MILLER & ELIAS PETTERSSON CANUCKS DRAMA

[Music] Hey, what do you mean, Lego? Why are you making this video? Move on. It was from last season. Why do you have to keep on bringing up old wounds of Vancouver Canucks past failures? And uh it’s because there are things continually being talked about in regards to those failures. Today I wanted to talk about a guy that we’ve talked about a bunch over the past few years. Hopefully this time it’s going to be the last time for a while that we speak about him, especially in this context. But today we are heading over to the Big Apple to the New York Rangers and talking about their newly appointed captain J. T. Miller and revisiting the conflict/controversy from last year with the Vancouver Conucks. Now, if you hadn’t been around in Vancouver last season, you wouldn’t have seen it, but it was a pretty big deal in the hockey world. It was arguably the biggest story in hockey at a time where Ilas Person and JT Miller, Vancouver’s top two centers on the team, were both beefing and they were both underperforming and it was really, really bad. There were a lot of rumors going around, speculation hearsay from arena staff and other folks around the Vancouver Conucks debating what actually happened. We’re not going to get into those rumors here. There are people going out there and talking about it available online if you wanted to dive into that yourself, but essentially it didn’t work out. There was beef and then Miller got shipped out after taking a leave of absence. Rumor has it that apparently Miller might have been the problem, which is why Vancouver Conucks executives like Alvine and Rutherford, especially Jim Rutherford, continuously talk about, oh, it was a trade that we were forced to make. It was a trade that we had to make. We had no choice. We didn’t want to do it, but we had to. That’s kind of the way Jim Rutherford talks about it. It’s very clear that Vancouver management liked JT Miller, but they had to trade him. They had no choice. What does that mean? Does that validate all the rumors that were going around? You can think about that on your own time and judge for yourself. But now Miller is in New York and now Miller is the captain of the team. Not Vinnie Troek, not Mika Zabanad, not Paneran, and not Adam Fox. It is JT Miller who had only been acquired, reacquired I should say, on that squad for a few months. Take a look at this tweet posted out there by Molly Walker that asks Mike Sullivan about the drama from last year. Asked if he’s had conversations with JT Miller about what happened in Vancouver last season, New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan says yes. When Chris Jury and I both talked to him about leadership and being the captain of the team, that was a part of the conversation. I think JT has really matured over the course of his career. When you go through challenges like that, I think that’s when people learn the most. I think JT has really taken the right approach to his career, both on the ice and off the ice. The type of teammate that he is, I think sometimes those guys tend to be misunderstood. Miller is a fierce competitor. He tends to wear his emotions right in the sleeve. His intentions are in the right place. He wants to win in the worst way, and we love that about him. We don’t want that aspect of his personality to change. We want him to be himself. And I’ll open up this conversation of responses by talking about this element. It’s a response on Reddit by Oh, the ball sue. Miller being the captain in New York will go well for a while. I can see him having issues with some guys on the team eventually though. His leadership style just doesn’t work with everyone. I don’t think it was only a Person thing. I think having Troche there is going to help. He has a lot of experience dealing with JT when he gets too intense. And then another reply says, “Wouldn’t it have been easier to just name Troche the captain if he’s going to spend all season calming the Captain Miller down? Lol.” Another reply says that Drury and Sullivan want JT Miller’s intensity. Then you have Troche, Bred, Zabanagad, and Fox as balance. JT is also signed long-term with a no move clause. So you name a nut job captain cuz there’s four other players to balance him out. Come on, man. And here’s the thing as well. I think it’s a fair argument to say that Miller’s personality, the attitude he has on the ice, the fire that burns in Miller, it’s a really strong fire. And I can understand the argument that says, “Oh yeah, the Rangers want all of their players to have that same fire. It makes sense in theory, right?” The only problem is JT hasn’t really been good at keeping that fire under control the past few years in both directions. the positive and the negative. When things are good, oh, they’re so good. JT is scoring four points a game. His team is winning games cleanly. He’s backing. He’s winning battles. And he’s the most supportive guy out there. He’s fist bumping guys. He’s bumping guys shoulders. There’s a good camaraderie. But when things are going bad, that’s when JT starts banging his stick on the back of the goalie’s net, telling him to get out and leave. That’s JT arguing with Luke Shed in the period intermission. That’s JT reportedly doing all the stuff that he did to Patterson, maybe chucking some iPads, maybe breaking down some doors. JT is a really emotional guy that we have seen on and off the ice, and that is part of his forte. It’s what the New York Rangers want out of him. But I just question, you know, when the Rangers go through any sort of a slump or when JT stops being the 100 point player that he can be because he hasn’t consistently been that throughout his time in Vancouver. I wonder where things are going to go with the Rangers at that point. Oh, you have Troche and Fox there to balance out Miller. Oh, you also had Quinn Hughes in Vancouver to balance out Miller. You had Meyers and Garland out there to balance out Miller. Guess what? That didn’t work. He still ended up fighting with Elias Patterson. And then you also have yourselves the defensive play. He’s a fierce competitor where he’ll argue forever about how he isn’t accountable for the issues on defense or blind backhand turnovers in his own end or giving up on the play and acting like a child on the bench. JT had a number of moments in Vancouver where things just did not go his way. He gave up. He lacadasically back checked. He just stood in his own zone, didn’t really do anything or he completely gives up on making a play. These are all things that Miller didn’t do when he got 100 points that season. He was like perfect in that season, admittedly. Like that was the best season that we have seen out of Miller ever. And it probably will continue to be the best season he’s ever had because throughout the other years, we’d been talking about this the entire time. It’s been up and down with Miller. Good first year, really bad second year. Better third year, and then a really down year, and then he gets 100 points, and then the last season happens. So Miller has these up and down moments, and he had had them with Vancouver the entire time he was here. There was never two good seasons in a row out of JT reputation-wise. Even though the points were always there essentially, there were very different flavors to JT Miller’s season by season breakdown in Vancouver. And now as the captain of the New York Rangers, seems like they want that level of intensity to match itself as he leads this New York team hopefully past the depths that they fell to this previous campaign. Is JT Miller the answer to bringing the Rangers back into the promised land? I just kind of wonder how long it’s going to last. Like how long until JT gets into some beef with his teammates again. Not saying that Elias Person is a particularly common personality type in the NHL, but I just wonder, you know, not everybody is going to be on board with it. We’ll just wait and see whether or not this does have any long-term lingering effects. But I want you to let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. How do you feel about the New York Rangers response to the JT Miller Elias Patterson drama in Vancouver? They actually spoke about it, which I thought was interesting. 1. I agree with your analysis. JT was fun to watch, I enjoyed all of his drama good or bad. He entertained me and I loved his Halloween antics. I would not want him as a Captain. I wish him luck. I however, found Petey’s flashes of brilliance thrilling and breath taking, my eyes were on him always even when the points were down. I think he sees the ice like a chess player and I pray his points go up 🙏

  2. I think this will be good for JT Miller…I think the times he played bad was because he gave up on whoever let him down that day i.e. management, coaching staff or other teammates. He is an emotional guy and he will let everyone know how happy he is or how upset he is. Wearing an A is different from wearing a C. He's no longer an employee, but now owns the leadership of this team and will be accountable. The reason why this drama happened was because Petterson let him down and understandably made him upset. He gave up. Management made their decision and Miller had to go. Without the lack of trying, though…Petterson too was on the block and if that Necas deal didn't fall through, Miller would still be here in Vancouver. I believe management would have been happy whichever way it went. We can all argue which players should have stayed, but it doesn't really matter now. I'm happy JT Miller will be the captain and will provide him the purpose to bring his intensity every game which I don't doubt he will do. Wouldn't it be something? We could possibly rewatch the 1994 Stanley Cup Final. Makes me feel nervous all over again just thinking about that…lol.

  3. HE IS A DEDICATED PERSON AS HE WAS TOLD BY TOCCHET TO PUSH PETEY AND PETEY PROBABLY NEVER EVER HAD THAT IN HIS HOMELAND OR HERE UNTIL JT MILLER AS THATS WHY THEIR WAS COMPLEXS AT TIMES.

  4. You know there is something going on showing JT is not exactly an ideal captain material when they decided Quinn Hughes but not either Pettersson or Miller to be the next captain of the Canucks.
