just about set to go now. And today’s starter, Ryan Zephr John and Singy, that may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one, but yes, you are right. This guy strikeout per nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup. And when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. Here’s the second baseman, Jose Altuve. [Applause] And that’s outside. And this one is off and running. Inside just missed. Oh, he never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. And that one is lifted in the air. Sizes this one up. Pulls it in. And there’s one away. Now we check out the Astros lineup. And Chris, this offense is facing a defense that is well known for kicking the ball around a bit. How aware are you offensively of a bad defensive team? Well, you’re not like completely aware because you’re really focusing on your approach. But I think when you know about a team and how they can be sloppy and as it plays out in a ball game, you’re more intent on saying with two strikes, I got to make sure that I put the ball in play because even if I don’t get a knock, there’s a chance they commit an error and it leads to us scoring more runs. That one fouled off. [Music] One down, base is empty. Goes down swinging for the strike out. Slider got him for a strike three. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Here’s Carlos Kareah. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Vic Keratini at the plate. In for a strike 0 and one. Koreah off of first with two away. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and two out there on the mound. He’s setting the tone early with the fast ball. 98 mph up on the scoreboard. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] just misses the mark outside the zone. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Stays alive. [Music] [Applause] Two outs and that misses and the count’s even at two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to strike out and that’ll do it for the unit. One left for Houston. And now the Angels will get their first opportunity in this one. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and towing the slab in this one, JP France. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo. Don’t give hitters time to adjust or think they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten in this one. And a foul ball. outside low. Going to count one and two. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into left field. So, a man on base to start the inning. Batting second right. And now batting Mike Trout late on that fast ball. Trout is one of the best players of his generation. He’s a fan favorite because he brings a rare combination of speed, power, and allaround talent to the team. He’s exactly the type of player you want to build around. Next offering is down low. That’s a little bit low. [Applause] Swing. A highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way. And it’s gone. That one felt good. Just like that, they move in front. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. The slight opposite field into the gap, man. Making it look easy, that’s for sure. Here is Yan Mona. He’s been a great free agent side. First pitch not close. Can be tough to bounce back after a big home run, but nobody on, nobody out. You just have to treat it as a fresh inning. Sing maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Next pitch in for a strike and a count one and two. [Applause] just misses with that one. That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated. So, he’s going to have to collect himself a little. [Applause] Wellruck right field going on. They do it again. Backto back homers and they tack on to their lead. It’s three nothing. Backto back home runs and they keep adding to their lead. Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now, Dave. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other. And the collective confidence just continues to grow. Here’s Joe Adel. There’s the strike. And now it’s even up. That one missed. [Applause] missed with a change up and that’s ball three. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one in there across the letters looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that ball. Here comes Chris Taylor. Ground ball left side could be two. Glove flip for one to Walker. And that’s two. He’s so good at coming across the bag and snagging it with the bare hand to throw. I like the flare that he brings day in and day out. And next for the Angels, Logan Ohappy. Right through there for a strike. The pitch one. Two outs. Base is empty. Swings through that one. Next offering upstairs. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Cole sizing this one up. Makes the grab and that’ll end the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now three nothing. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. Top of the second. And now it’s Christian Walker. One of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first. He is that good with the glove. You’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman. Zephr John back to work. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. ball one. First baseman are involved in just about every single play. So, when you have somebody so solid over there, uh, you can breathe a little easier. The other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him, it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times, and he just handles them so well. So, he really makes the entire infield better with his glove. And that’s downstairs and outside. You’re not just talking about the ability to pick, Chris. One of the things about him, the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole. Cut on and lifted in the air. Lunging but can’t bring it in. Batting six, right fielder Jesus Sanchez. So, next up for Houston, Jesus Sanchez. Foul ball there. Remember Mark Katseay was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. the O2 and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Walker on at first. Nobody out [Music] now. He can’t squeeze it behind the plate. Next offering is downstairs. Ruer at first with no outs here. That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Oh, now he’s got two runners on after that walk. And things can get out of hand in a hurry in these situations. So, he’s going to have to find a way to get back into the strike zone. And now Zack Cole that clips a corner. the 01 and the sweeper catches the plate. Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here. Well, Joe’s an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like he kind of moves around from game to game, sometimes inning to inning. [Applause] And now one and two. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I don’t think he’s ever way off with his balls and strikes, but yeah, I don’t think it’s easy to define what his zone is. Like you said, knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That’s out to center field under it and he makes the catch. One away. Batting eight, left fielder Taylor Tral. Here’s Taylor Trmell. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Basketball for a strike. Well, in this situation with runners on, you got to get ahead in the count so that you can dictate the rest of the at bat. Nice job right there. ball. And that one fouled off. Runners at first and second with one gone. That one hammered center field. That’s back there. Gone off the rocks in center. touch him all time. That’s one way to quiet the crowd. His fourth home run of the season. It’s 33. [Music] That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. First pitch just misses. Dubon getting to start at shortstop. 30 years old now. And he was born in Honduras. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Down two and 0. Zephr job maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, pitchers, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. And there’s the automatic. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show. Uh so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. That one finds the corner and it’s a ball to strike. Two gone, base is empty, but three runs across here in the top of second. Next offering in the dirt and it’s two and one. [Applause] That one at the knees for a strike. [Applause] popped up under it. Nabs it and that is that. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A threerun homer. We’re tied now at three apiece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. back in Anaheim ready to go for the last half of the inning. So in now for the Angels Christian Moore. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. The O2 got him looking and there’s one down. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. Now, it’s the short stop. That one ripped left field and in one hops the wall into second with a double and they’ve got something brewing now. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Here’s the center fielder. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. Swing and a miss. No ball. Man at second. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. upstairs. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. And he chases that one and there’s two down. Usually when you see several pitches, you’re going to get at least one that you might be able to do something with, but they didn’t exactly challenge him in any way right there. And really, they just used his aggressiveness against him. I don’t think he even got a pitch in the zone. No, that’s a good point, Sigy. He goes down on strikes, but not a single pitch was actually in the strike zone. And here is Nolan Shanowell. Late swing, fouled to the left. [Music] [Applause] And that’s downstairs. One and one tied up here in the early going. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Ground third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single. It’s 43. Everything came together for him. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. Here’s Trout. He’s already homered here in this one. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. [Applause] Ripped on a line and that is the third out of the inning. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s now a 43 ball game. Back after this on the show back here at Angel Stadium. Stepping in Isak Paradis. Well, he’s back out here for the third. And after the first couple of innings, pretty rough. I think the skipper is looking for him to give him a little bit of length. See if he can save the bullpen some. And that one upstairs. Ball one. That one ripped. And this one looks like trouble around first. Heading for two. And it gets by him. And he’s going to get to second with nobody out. I love the approach he had right there with that pitch. Not trying to do too much, but still looking to drive it. And that’s exactly what he’s able to do into the opposite field gap for the double. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Korea now at the plate. That one not close. And that’s ball one. Paradis at second with nobody out. Two balls, no strikes to count. Well, usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200. He’s put himself in a really good spot. And another ball. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Yeah, the three 0 finds his own. Clearly taking all the way there in that three-0 count. It was a cookie right down the middle. Flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field. The throw in. It’s off the mark and he scores. It’s 4-4. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Ryan Zephr John will depart and the opener strategy clearly didn’t work out this time. a new arm coming on. We’ll be back after a short break now. Pitching. So, a young arm coming on now out of the pen. Number 70. He’s averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season. And that’s not where you want to be at all. So, we’ll see how he does here. Here’s the catcher. Victor Keratini went down on strikes his first time through. And there’s a base hit to left. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. First and second, no outs. Next to hit, Christian Walker. One for one with a single so far. Pitch misses. Ball one. just missed. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Tied at four and a strike in there. [Applause] Hats and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, pitchers have become so much better at commanding that high fast. It used to be that a lot of pitchers didn’t like to throw it because it throw off their release point and their mechanics and they’re aimed at keeping everything at the knees, get ground balls. But because hitters get a swing path that can lift balls at the knees up in the air and over the fence, this pitch has come back into play and they are doing some special things with it. Digging in, Jesus Sanchez. That’s a strike. outside with a breaking ball. Runners at first and second with one gone. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Fast ball for a strike and count one and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. [Applause] flying drive and that’s a base hit into center field. Kareah on his horse and coming home. He scores and they have the lead and it’s an RBI single. It’s 54. Well, that started and ended pretty quickly. No messing around right there. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. First and second, two outs. Taylor Treml up next for the Astros. Swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the zone. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. [Applause] And that is out of play. [Applause] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Applause] And there’s a ball. Two on, two outs. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Applause] Next offering is outside. [Applause] Got him. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Astros five and the Angels four. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here is Mona Yan Mona and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Sends it to first. leadoff man retired here in the third. Now batting designated hitter Joe Joe Adele the next to hit for the Angels. He reached out to walk his first time. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away. And you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there have a real quick inning. Get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. That’s off the inside corner. Two and0. Two count to a guy with this much pop at the dish. You better expect him to be turning on something. It’s going to either get hit hard to the pull side or the fans better look out in the stands. Swinging a foul out of play. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in and he walked him. Oh, he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. One down now. The left fielder Chris Taylor. He’s over for one. Curve ball over for a called strike. And that’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. late with the swing there. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. That’s hard hit on the line. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away now. Up next for the Angels catcher Logan Ohappy. Here’s the Angels catcher Logan Ohappy. Fly to center his first time. He’s 0 for one. The change up missing and that is ball one. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. That one missed. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. That is the inning. No runs, no base hits, no errors, and one left on. Three innings complete. It’s the Astros five and the Angels four. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth. Mauricio Dubon. Angels. Come on, Angel. That’s off the mark. Ball one. And he takes the strike. [Applause] Swings through that. got him swinging. He’s knocked four strikeouts now. Jose Altuve up to hit here. 02 in this one. Jose Altuve [Applause] right side hard hit takes it to the bag. Steps on first and it’s out number two. Now batting the designated hitter, Isach Paredus. Isach Paradis up next for the Astros. One for two. There’s the strike. And a foul ball. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. That one down the line. Mona toss to first and it’s a one two three inning. Astros are down quietly as they hold on to a 54 lead. Back in Anaheim now. It’s the second base, Christian Moore. Second baseman, Christian Moore. And that misses one and0. You know, these Angels showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Pitch count is pretty high and they’ve played four runs already, so I think it’s safe to say their game plan is working out pretty well right now. the other way, puts it away for the out. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. And the batter will be the short stop. Doubled into his first AB. So, they forced the starter to put in a lot of work and they’ve been able to get to him for some runs and hopefully that bullpin phone is working today. Right through there for a strike. Home team down a run. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and down on strikes he goes. That K is his third of the game. Now batting and now the center fielder struck out swinging his first time. [Music] Fast ball is outside. Next offering is in for a strike. Swings and misses and one down below the zone. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Got him. Three up, three down. Inning over. Angels go quietly there. They trail it 54 back here at Angel Stadium. Now, Kareah up to hit. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. that one outside and it’s one and0. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. That one finds the zone and it’s two and one. [Applause] That clips a corner. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Boo. I’ll tell you when he goes to look at the video of that pitch. He’s going to want to punch himself. That slider had hit me written all over it. And clearly he just got a little too excited and was out in front. Tell you what, when you get a pitch like that, you cannot miss it. Those have a chance to go a long way. Victor Keratini up next for the Astros. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Keratini goes 5′ 11 in 225 lbs and he was born in Puerto Rico. One [Music] down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So, a man aboard now with one away. Now batting first baseman Christian Walker. And next to hit for Houston, Christian Walker. That’s outside. Ball one. And there’s a foul ball. [Music] [Applause] Runner. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes swing and a miss. Throw to second. Ow. Well, I think that was a hit and run right there. When you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put wood on it, put it in play, that tells you that they had something going. But unfortunately, it was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base. Really nice job behind the dish. Now this is in the air down the line. Traff makes the catch and that is that one hit in the inning but nothing more than that. Home half of the fifth coming up. It’s the Astros five and the Angels four. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Now it’s the Angels lead off man Nolan Shadow. Shadow France back to work inside. And that is ball one. And that’s fouled off. on a line. Nice grab on the run. And there’s one away. That was just a great jump and route to the ball. Well, it had to be. If he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner, that’s the way it had to be done. Nice job. Here’s Mike Trout. He’s already homered in this game. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Just missed. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. Swing. And this one’s bounced to the ground. and he beats the throw. Shows off the wheels right there. An infield single. Got himself in great position and couldn’t have played that one any better, but just stood no chance with that great speed running down the line. And now Yan Mona. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] And that’s downstairs and outside. Action in the pen down there. Hunter Brown getting loose out there. Valdez getting cranked up as well. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Tying run is at first. Last half of inning number five. Yeah, the 2-1 hammered but fouled with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here on the ground left side. Six four three double play and the inning is over. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam. Top of the sixth inning and now the right fielder Jesus Sanchez. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. swinging a foul straight back. Well, these Astros doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. They’ve done a great job finding holes in the defense. Exactly half of their hits have come off the bat less than 90 mph. So, the ball isn’t exactly jumping off the lumber, but they’re finding a way to make it work. Liner. And this could be trouble. makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s got a leadoff double. He was all over that one. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. Zack Cole getting ready to hit right down to shoot. Strike one. [Music] [Applause] Come on. Just missed. No outs. Runner on second. Bounced up the middle on to first. Now one gone in the top of the sixth. Now batting left fielder Taylor Trl. And now Taylor Treml and he had a big swing of the bat early on in the ball game. Yep. A three-run rocket back in the second. Even though it was early, a big homer like that can be tough to come back from when you’re on the other end of that thing. I mean, it’s tough. Sets up an uphill battle the rest of the way. It immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] Strike two. I think he was sitting off speed there. fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] [Applause] and the swing and miss and that’s 6ks for him in this one. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. [Applause] Now Mauricio Dubong late swing fouled off. and he’s down 02 as he swings through it on the mound. You take a note, you see the hitter’s willingness to chase that pitch upstairs, get deeper in the count, try to climb the ladder. Next offering is down low. Runner at third. Two left. Battling here as he fouls it away. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And a swing and a miss. Picks up strikeout number seven. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. To the bottom of the six we go. 456. Coming up, it’s the Astros five and the Angels four. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Hunter Brown. And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Now it’s the DH for the Angels. Joe Adele. He’s not going to get cheated up there. No, he’s not. He’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes. That’s in there. Going on. Movement in the bullpen. Anel de los Santos appears to be getting loose. [Applause] Next pitch inside. And now it’s even one and one. And that one upstairs. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Chris Taylor in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Swing and a miss. Three and two now. Got him looking for the strike out. That was pretty nasty. Now, here comes Chris Taylor. Left fielder. Chris Taylor. Just off the outside edge. Ball one. Taylor, a middle infielder by trade. Played his college baseball at the University of Virginia. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. just couldn’t catch up. One down, base is empty. Pitch misses there. Two and one ball, one strike. Outside corner for a strike. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the six. [Music] And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves. Knowing that they can miss the bat, tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Logan Ohappy will hit next. Fast ball for a strike. Strike two. More and more guys are looking to slog regardless of the count. And this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Offense held in check there. Seventh inning coming up. It’s the Astros five and the Angels four. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Luis Garcia. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. [Music] Here’s a former MVP, Jose Altuve. 0 for three in this one. Second base, Jose Altuve. First offering and it just misses. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Sam Bachmann, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Brogden also throwing outside low and now two and0 to the left side but it is well fouled. [Applause] And that one is inside. One strike. That one misses. So a lead off walk now. betting the Now here’s the Astros designated hitter, Isach Paradus. One for three. Little trouble with this one behind the plate. He’s in there. And now a man into scoring position. This is something that’ll happen to him from time to time behind the dish. The defense is a part of his game. He’s trying to improve, but right there just couldn’t squeeze it and it cost him. [Music] [Applause] Smoked on the ground to second. Gets it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. [Applause] Now batting third baseman, Carlos Koreah. And here comes Carlos Koreah. You have to find a way to score the runner from third, especially with less than two outs. Wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can. There’s the strike. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. And that’s in for a strike. And the count is 0 and two in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Close but called the ball. Now one and two. Home plate umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. That one inside and the count is even. Two and two. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. And now the count filled up. Three and two. one away with a runner at third here in the top half of inning number seven [Applause] and ball four to a board Now batting catcher Victor Keratini. Runners at the corners here. One away. Keratini digs in now. [Applause] Goes cut on and miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. Kind of a gamble right there. They’re trying to stay out of the inning ending double play possibility, but now two outs and it’s gets a little tougher to drive in the run from third. [Applause] 01 now and fouled off. Two outs and one at scoring position. and takes low for ball one. [Applause] Hard hit, base hit. In comes the run from third. It’s an RBI single and they lead by two. Got the job done to put him up by two. Just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field. Everything was on time. He stayed balanced through the entire swing and just launch that one into center. So, two down. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. [Applause] Now it bounces away. Can’t squeeze it. But no advance. That’s ball one. [Music] [Applause] And there’s a ball. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Two outs. There’s the strike and it’s two and one. [Applause] Squirts away a little bit. Jesus Sanchez up next for the Astros. [Applause] Oh, great stop. Throws from his knees and they get the out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Bottom of the seventh. So in now for the Angels. Christian Moore. And the first pitch misses for ball one. You know, these Angels digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve been lining the ball all over the ballpark and unfortunately sometimes it’s right into a glove, but still they’ve hit nine line drives so far and that’s something they should feel very good about. And a base hit right there. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Here’s the shortstop at the play. That’s too low. One and0. Speaking of those line drives, you can’t get too discouraged when they don’t drop in for you. It’s important to remember that you pretty much did everything right. And that’s just baseball sometimes. [Applause] Tying run at the plate. And now two and nothing. [Applause] the bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. He can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it. That’s just too much velocity. Hitters got to look down in the zone. Late on that fast ball. There might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Spoils a two strike pitch. And he’ll see another with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom of the seventh. that to right squeezes it and there’s one down. Now batting center fielder Bryce Teodosio. Here’s the center fielder who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Pickoff throw and he’s back in on a dive, man. At first, one away. [Applause] Fly ball to right. Sanchez gets under it. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Up next for the Angels. First baseman Nolan manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Hunter Brown departs. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching for Rober Valdez comes on now and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with. Hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance. Now at the plate Nolan Showell. [Applause] There goes the runner. There’s a ball and it’s safe. It’s a stolen base. [Applause] The tying run at the plate. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. swing and a ball hit out towards left center field. Makes the grab on the run and that will end the inning. So, a strong showing there from the Houston Bullpen. We look ahead to inning number eight. It’s the Astros six and the Angels four. Now, pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the Rock Burke. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Now, it’s the right fielder Jesus Sanchez. A little surprised we don’t see a pinch hitter here, but the lefty lefty matchup. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. And it’s one and one. [Music] [Applause] Comes up empty. That’s strike two. That one the other way. And out number one on the grab. Now that center Zack Cole and now the center fielder Zack Cole Bird in his fifth season, 28 years old and he found his way onto the team after being claimed off waiverss that catches the top part of the zone and it’s 0 and one action in the Angels bullpen. Chase Silip getting ready to go. Dana warming up as well. [Music] [Applause] inside and it hit him and stepping in for the Astros. Taylor Treml step off throw to first. Cole dives back in safely. out towards right center. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Forget it. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 84. Wasn’t fooled on the first pitch at all. He squared it up right away. Got to keep that front shoulder closed and your body square to the plate, especially when you’re facing a left-hander. He did all those things until the very last moment where that hip just popped. Hands came through. Nice little lag to it. Carried out nicely. So, one out, nobody on. Mauricio Dubon up next for the Astros. And that’s a base hit. Now batting second baseman Jose Altuve. And now here is Jose Altuve. [Applause] Ru takes off and first offering is fouled off. [Applause] fought off foul. Dubong leads off first with one away. And one and two. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. [Applause] And that’s too high. Two balls, two strikes. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. That’s inside. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full count. Well, he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him. As a hitter, you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches. Still able to make some type of contact. [Applause] Just a weak fly ball this time. Moore on his way over. He’s got it. There’s two away. Now, that’s a tough play for the infielder. Ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Now it’s going to be Isach Paredus. [Applause] Snap throw to first and he’s back in easily. One in the dirt. [Music] [Applause] Two outs. No. Off the plate. After giving up that home run earlier, it just doesn’t seem like he wants to challenge him. [Applause] And it’s fouled away. Two runs across in the inning and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] Go. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Now batting third baseman Carlos Car manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Brock Burke is done and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Now pitching for the new pitcher in the game, Kayen Dana. He’s pitching on two days rest. Kayen Dana. [Applause] First and second, two outs. The batter now, Carlos Koreah. [Applause] That missed by a lot. And that’s ball one. [Applause] Now a screamer into the outfield. Going back Taylor. He’s there to make the grab. And that’s the third out. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 84. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the inning now. The number two hitter Mike Trout. The Halos in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. Activity in the Houston bullpen. Steven Ochert preparing to come on if needed. Kimbell getting loose as well. [Music] He swings and fouls one off. [Music] 0 and two now on the ground to the left and it goes just foul. Go and chew now up the middle. El Tuve handles it in plenty of time to first. Going up, one down. Now batting third baseman Yan. Here comes Yan Mona. Foul ball. Base is empty, one away here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. That one hammered way out of here. And Marcado knows it. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they cut into the deficit. It’s 85. Sometimes too much velocity will cause a pitcher to throw through the sink and that means that there’s more force seam action than there is sink and that can turn into a really good pitch to hit. Well, we saw it right there. Didn’t miss a stitch on that baseball. He’s got himself a home run. Now, here is Joe Adele. Couple of walks and a strike out and that’s in the dirt. Got to keep things airtight defensively right here. on your toes, ready to make a play. If you can get this to the ninth with a three-run lead, it should be a W. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. [Applause] That misses and the count now two nothing. Valdez maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. That finds the mark on the inside corner. [Music] That one catches the corner for a strike. Back door him with a breaking ball. Just got the corner. There’s nothing you can really do with that. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. Now batting left. Chris Taylor now Taylor. This one kicks away a little as he can’t squeeze it. Throw to second. Not in time. He’s there easily. An unfortunate pass ball right there. One he’s not going to be happy about behind the plate. And with the runner advancing to second, that double play is off the table right now. So, we’ll see if that comes back to bite him. Adele leads off second with one gone in the inning. Line and a base hit to right coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. He’ll score and it’s now a two-run game. Well, that gets him a little closer in this one. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it otherwise it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make the move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Robert Valdez won’t go any further. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. Now pitching for the pitcher on here, Daniel de los Santos. 65th appearance on the mound for him this year. That’s a bunch. So there’s no doubt he’s a guy they trust and really like turning to out of the pin. Run around at first with one gone. And next for LA, Logan Ohappy. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. There’s a strike. [Applause] Tying run at the plate. Swing and a miss. And it’s nothing in two. Well, you got the hitter already chasing that nasty slider. If you’re on the mound, you just want to expand the zone right now. Get a swing and miss and get through this at bat. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. [Applause] That one kicks away from the catcher. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in, though. We’ll see if he can settle down. [Applause] 3-2 swing and a miss. Struck him out. The high heat too much on that one. Next to hit, Christian Moore. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. This is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation. Yeah, boo. Not sure what the numbers say, but clearly an at bat that could change the course of this game dramatically. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Check swing appeal to first. And he went around just enough that time. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. So they get two runs on two hits. One of them left the yard. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Astros eight and the Angels six. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. And here’s the catcher, Victor Keratini. Breaking ball inside. And it’s one and0. Activity in the bullpen for the Angels. Chase Silent, the young right-hander, up and throwing. [Music] That one fouled off. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. And it’s one and two. He goes down looking. Just dropped it in there on the top of the strike zone. Certainly not what he was trying to do with that curve ball by any means, but at the plate you could tell he wasn’t expecting it either. I’d say he got away with a big time hanger on that one. Christian Walker the next to hit. [Applause] Swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field. Hauls it in for the out and a couple of quick outs. Now batting right fielder. Two down. Base is empty. Now here is Jesus Sanchez. [Applause] and he swings and misses at the initial offering. Well, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see and he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. Tra makes the play and it’s out number three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors and no one left. 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine. It’s the Astros eight and the Angels six. So the closer summon from the bullpen, Brian Abrau. Oh, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So this game has gone to plan more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. Now it’s the short stop. The shorts stop number 13. Right through there for a strike. Comes up empty. [Applause] down to the dirt swing and a miss in time and a drop third strike leads to the first out. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door, cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. [Applause] Number 22 in the box with one away as he takes ball one. [Applause] Next pitch in for a strike and the count is one and one. And that one fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Off the mark there. And the count is two and two. He missed the zone, but I don’t think he missed his spot. That was a good pitch with two strikes. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. [Applause] and downstairs. [Applause] Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Angels with only one out left. Now batting first base, Nolan Shadow now at the plate. [Applause] And that’s him for a strike. One two-run game with two away here in the bottom of the ninth. Check swing went around. 0 and two now. [Applause] One strike away. Pitch misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. [Applause] Pop dump. That’s the ball game. Certainly can’t complain about a lack of action in this one. A high-scoring game. Purists might not love it, but pretty impressive showing at the plate from both sides. Final score of 8 to6 in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon. Help me. Double bre.
