According to this article, this scout thinks Cootes (15th) and Martin (5th) are two prospects who are NHL ready. With some question marks on the forward roster, I think he has a strong case as well. If he isn’t scoring, he’s going to be tenacious and relentless. It’s the type of game coaches love.

DeBrusk – Pettersson – Boeser

Kane – Cootes – Lekkerimaki

Raty – Chytil – Garland

Hoglander – Blueger – Sherwood

If the rookies keep it up, this is a pretty promising opening night roster. Would you want him on the roster?

  1. Penciling Cootes into 2C is wild. No he’s not solving our 2C problem in year 1.

Hoglander needs to play top 6 this year.

  2. He’s earned another day.

I think Cootes starts in ~~Abbotsford~~ the WHL though. Pettersson/Chytil/Räty/Blueger seem set for opening night.

It’ll be interesting to see the 23 man opening night roster and who gets exposed to waivers.

  3. Realistically, I’d limit Cootes minutes so I guess having him on a line with two other guys who’s minutes need to be monitored/limited might be a good thing.

On a side note, I also think Chytil should play wing and Raty center to take faceoffs, but I guess it’s not gonna make too much of a difference. Just overall a very annoying line to play against it seems.

  4. I think an ideal development year for Cootes would be earns a job on the NHL team until Christmas, plays in the World Juniors, he gets traded to a Memorial Cup contending team and gets sent back to junior for the playoffs. Next year, he plays in the AHL.

  5. It’s tough because you don’t want him in a bottom 6 checking role, but you also don’t want to send him to Abby to play the replacement top 6 C role.

I think he looks great and projects great but I also think WHL is the best for him this year. Not opposed to giving him a 9 game but at the same time where does he fit if he makes the roster.

  6. If Cootes plays a couple of games it will be good for him to experience the NHL game and training. Anything more than that should be a huge red-flag about this management team.

  7. Last season the Flyers picked Jett Luchanko at #13 overall.

A 5’11” 180 pound right handed center, he had a good camp and was rewarded with 4 NHL games before being sent back to the OHL.

He then was assigned to their AHL affiliate at seasons end and put up 6 points in 7 playoff games.

I think he’s been held out of Flyers camp bc of a groin injury but is expected to make the team (judging by his junior team naming a new captain to replace him).

It seems like a good development path for him, and perhaps kind of an ideal situation for Cootes too.

  8. Someone asked this earlier in the summer, and I was like, no fking way this happens. But as we get closer and closer to the season, I am like thinking, “Yeah, maybe he does get 9 games.”

  9. Cootes deserves games in the lineup, but Chytil deserves a shot to play the 2C role we need. Just wait for injuries we will need center depth eventually

  10. Raty over O’Connor? Neither has done a lot to impress in preseason so far but for sure they stick with the veteran here.

  11. I’ve been impressed with Cootes. But we have to remember, even if he really is NHL-ready, there is no reason why he *needs* NHL time this year. He can torch the CHL for a year, then we reevaluate in a year.

  12. This Cootes overhype is really starting to get annoying. He’s not a 2C and likely never will be, he has a almost 100% chance of being a 3C or middle 6 C barring injury. That’s all right, he’ll be a good, cost controlled 3C for us and in a pinch he can play 2C decently, he isn’t a 2C long term though and certainly isn’t now.

  13. We have an 18 year 15th overall pick as our 2C? This isn’t happening. We gotta pump the brakes until this KID plays against a full roster of NHL players.

  14. Literally every lineup I see forgets we have Drew O’Connor. He’s going to be in top 9 to start the season without a doubt

  15. I feel like Allvin is going to add a forward via trade/waivers by the time the season starts. Nothing exciting, but a mid round pick for a player that doesn’t make their team out of camp.

Cootes will go to the WHL, and Lekkeremakki to Abby. Bains/Karlsson/Raty stick.
