Bills vs. Saints Week 4 preview + catching up w/ Legend of the Game Mitch Morse
drink though. What is up everybody? Welcome into Shout a Buffalo football podcast. Wing nuts 1402 Millersport Highway in Amherst, New York. We are live, Ryan Talbet, Matt Parino, and we got Mitch Morris, the man himself. And listen, I know that you’re going to be very humble, but you are indeed the legend of the game tomorrow from what I’ve heard. You got to Buffalo and you’ve been drinking ever since. And then you’re going to go out there tomorrow. Then you’re going to go out there tomorrow and you’re gonna have to do this whole spiel after tailgating. That is that is very ambitious, my friend. Well, we know that Buffalo tailgates are a religious experience. It’s one that I have not partaken in yet. So, I’m hoping the Holy Spirit guides me. The Lord works in very interesting ways. We were chatting about that earlier. And I hope he works in my favor today. And if he doesn’t, then that’s for a reason and I did something wrong. So, we’re going to do this and have a little fun doing it. We are going to have a lot of fun out here today. If you are not going to the game tomorrow, get out to Wingnuts. Two locations. Uh the airport over on Genese Street and here on Millerport. Uh I think we got to start with your wing review. You just had Wing Nuts, I believe, for the first time. What What did you think? Well, I know we bring up religion a lot, but it was a religious experience. It was uh you know because you hear hype, you you take it with a grain of salt and then you get in and not only is the food incredible, the people who bring it to you, who are around this place, this is some of the best food I’ve ever had in my entire life. Not only the wings, but the beef on wet. So I listen, I didn’t make my way up to the north towns often, but I got a good fuel economy car now that I’m going to be renting to make my way up here because the food is unbelievable. So thank you Wing Nuts for having me out. This is a privilege, man. It’s awesome. So, I want to uh bring Ryan into the show here now, and I I I think you have something great to talk to Mitch about because one of the things as media members that we always talk about is building relationships with with players. I mean, there’s a there’s a trust factor that goes into it and there’s a back and forth that goes into it. And I think both of us can agree that Mitch has always been one of the best to deal with. Yeah, absolutely, Matt. You know, whenever I do podcasts, I get the question, who’s been one of your favorite Bills players to interact with? And I always say Mitch Morse first right off the bat. Now, you know, we didn’t do any kind of long form articles or anything like that over the years on the beat. But one thing that always stuck with me was at training camp every single year, your media availability, you would come immediately after practice. You would not go directly to the podium area though. You would sit with us in the media. You’d stick your mouth guard in your sock. We’d always kind of talk to you about that. And then you would just talk to us about how are your families? How’s everyone doing? that meant so much to me and everyone else there and Buffalo’s locker room has a lot of great guys. But, you know, for you, why was that your approach in terms of coming and and meeting with the people rather than just going up there doing the press availability and going? Uh, well, I I get a lot more credit than I deserve. I I really appreciate it. It’s a people business, right? Football’s a people business. Life, most businesses are people business, but it’s all about the relationships you build, especially in football for for whatever reason. and everyone’s got a job to do and those jobs are difficult especially in the media at times. Like it just made too much sense to me to get to know the folks that have their finger on the pulse and that are kind of the gateway of communication for everyone else. And not only that, but you guys were super solid Hanks. And for me, I like to surround myself with good people. Believe me, I wouldn’t have if you guys weren’t. So, I I you guys held my hand a lot. You gave me some cupcake questions that made me look a lot better than I deserve. Uh but no, it was a no-brainer, man. I really appreciate that, my bald brother. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. By the way, the king of dad jokes here. You had a little bit of a joke when we announced this uh yesterday about who was going to be on the show. That’s right. I just said finally a podcast where balded and bearded men would be the majority. I was excited. Yeah, you’re you’re actually in trouble, dude. I’m kind of like being in between you guys to be honest. We’re being honest. Sucks, dude. All right. I know. I know. I’m sorry. How long do you think it takes me to do the hair? A long time. How How long? At least 10 minutes. No, I have it down to a fourminute science. Where’s my wife? Where is she? Can you cooperate? Four minutes. Stay over there. No. Oh, stay over there. Okay. Stay over there. All right. So, I want to talk a little We got to get a lot to get to on this show here uh over the next 20 minutes or so. But one of the things I want to get into, I mean, the Bills are playing the Saints tomorrow, and I want to get into this matchup because as a a former NFL player, I’m always super interested in a game scenario like this. You have a dominant Bills team at home, 15 and a half point favorites against a Saints team that’s come out of the gates a little bit slow. They got a young quarterback who, you know, Spencer Rattler, four touchdowns, one interception. He’s played probably better than a lot of people thought, but it’s a whole another world to come into Orchard Park for the first time against this defense for the Bills. What do they have to do to not maybe overlook this game? And is that something that is a danger going into a game like this? Well, it’s something that’s ever present on the the coaches and the players minds. I think this is a very competitively mature ball club, right? You look at the Ravens game with four minutes left. Even a seed of doubt in your subconscious could have created something like where we played a good game, but we’ll chalk it up as just one that we didn’t win, right? And old addages are around for a reason, man. It it is any given Sunday in this league truly like anyone can come in there and embarrass you. So, you just take it with a grain of salt, the outside noise, and what you do is you just compound moments, man. Like, this is today. This is Wednesday. Base campaign. what’s the next thing over and over again. When you compound those moments, you get to go out on Sunday and just celebrate those moments no matter who the opponent is. And I think when you have a team that’s been around in these big situations, has been embarrassed by I mean, we we lost nine to six to the J one win Jaguars. I mean, anything can happen on any given Sunday. So, I think it’s just you know what I the process is thrown around quite a bit. Sean loves the process. You know what? It’s a cliche and it’s around for a reason. process matters and and these guys are invested in it and I I don’t think it’s going to be one of those things where you sleep on an opponent especially like you said like they have talent in those first four or two games rather they had eight sacks last week was a little bit of anomaly. This team’s got ball players like like anyone in the NFL and if you think it if you think you’re going to walk through someone in the NFL which which the Bills don’t that’s when you get embarrassed I think you just focus on the process and it takes care of itself. You you just mentioned the pass rush of the Saints. One strength of the Bills since you’ve were here too is the offensive line. You spent two years with Aaron Chromemer. He gets talked about a lot as one of the best, if not the best, O line coach in the business. What is it about him that in terms of the techniques working with individual players that makes him so good? Yeah, it’s a good question. I would say Chromemer is at the top. Not only his football acumen and his knowledge, but his willingness and ability to relate to players. You have a room in offensive line. It’s one of the biggest rooms. You got 12, 15 guys. Each person processes information differently. Each person gets ready for games differently. Each person takes coaching criticism differently. But we all have to be on the same page, right? So for us, it’s everyone also kind of moves biomechanic. This is a little nerdy, but everyone moves biomechanically different. God made us all different, but as long as we all get to the same place, it’s a good time. And uh he he’s just a beautiful human. First of all, he’s skinny. He needs to eat a cheeseburger. But uh he is one of the best. and it’s because he’s so pliable. He’s so fluid in his coaching and he knows that coaching isn’t a one-sizefits-all. So, I I want to talk a little more football and I got some other stuff that I want to get to. But before we get there, let’s update everybody on what you’re up to now post uh playing career. You got this brand new podcast, which by the way, I highly recommend everybody go to all of the platforms that you could consume this thing right now, Monday mornings with Mitch, with your co-host KC. You guys are absolutely crushing it. I’m pretty sure you came earlier this morning from an interview with the big guy, GM Brandon Bean. Yeah, we did. Listen, dude, it’s been such a privilege to be able to enter this platform. It’s been extremely humbling. We talked about this before. I’ve been, you know, so many people have been treasure troves of information. I find myself asking for so much advice, so many favors, and not being able to give many in return. And to be honest, people have been so gracious with their knowledge. But, uh, yeah, I think it’s just one of those things. I always enjoy talking to folks. I’m not very good at chatting X’s and O’s. I think it can be a bit boring and I think that landscape is a little bit saturated. So, for us, it’s just kind of getting down. I mean, we talked 20 minutes with Gabe Davis about how you wipe your butt. Do you fold? Do you do you quarter squat? And and it was just kind of an organic thing and we enjoyed it. But we also got to the point where we talked about the nitty-gritty. We talked about his struggles. And uh yeah, we got to interview Brandon. We did our first in-person interview today with Brandon Bean. It’s just a privilege. And if you guys feel like wasting 30 minutes or 40 minutes of your time on a Monday, it’s I don’t know if it’s worth a look, but it’d be great if you did. It’s fun. And it it it’s great having my handheld by people who know what they’re doing. And uh you realize that being interviewed is a lot easier than interviewing like navigating. It’s not to get boring, but it is not as intuitive as you think. So it’s it’s a learning process in the fly and we enjoy the heck out of it. One quick thing before I throw it. I’m glad that you said that because in my off time over the last five years, I’m an adjunct professor at the University of Buffalo over across the street and I spent probably four or five classes per semester just on interviewing. It’s it’s a really difficult skill, especially in NFL locker rooms when listen, we’re there for a reason, right? And we’re trying to extract information and that could be a very delicate balance. And I think the the people the folks that do it the best are the ones that that do it with empathy and understanding but also at the same time a level of respect. And I think that I’ve already gotten that sense from you on the other side of things watching a few of your interviews. Well, you we’re talking about pliability and coaching. You have to be fluid. You have to be able to read the room. And right now what we do is fairly easy. They know they come to talk to us just as much as we go talk to them. These folks that we know. But to your point, when you’re navigating in an NFL locker room, talking about that offensive line, 14 different dudes processing information different ways, emotional roller coaster is an understatement in regards to the NFL season. You just don’t know what you’re going to get. And so to come in with empathy is a huge thing. But yeah, it’s not easy. And I think that’s the one thing that guys are learning a lot more now is that it is everyone’s got a job to do. And if you can kind of be able to meet at least someone halfway, it makes everyone’s life a lot easier. So, what has been the most fun part of coming over to the media side of things? Uh, you crushed it on Good Morning Football as well as the podcast. So, what’s been the most fun and most challenging aspects of it? Yeah, that’s a great question. I think for me the most fun is just having the opportunity to talk to really cool folks. I mean, it’s people you’ve idolized or people you’ve seen do it for a bit and then just have a platform to have some fun. It fills my cup up. And the one thing I regret when I was playing was not doing more of it, not smiling a little more and just letting my personality show. But you can let your personality show while being informative. And I think the most challenging thing like I talked about earlier is just when you’re interviewing someone and you know what your next question you want it to be, you have to be able to be fluid, man. You have to I could not listen to what you say completely mess this up and then it’s just it it ruins the vibe. It ruins momentum. Everyone knows it. It’s just not organic. And and I feel like to be organic is it’s the toughest thing so far, you know. Um you notice the difference when I’m talking and you’re talking right now that you’re really putting your face in the mic. Yeah, I’m really putting my face in the mic. Here’s the thing. Don’t take it personally. I tell this to everybody when they come on and they’re always a little bit tentative to really eat it, but you got to otherwise those folks in the back won’t be able to hear you. Well, your tongue is in it, so I guess I’ll put my tongue in it. Listen, there’s kids here. We talked about this before we started. I’m just saying your lips are all it Okay, I got him. All right, I got you. This kid drank half my bourbon, by the way. I’m put right down there. Look at him. Dude, he was excited. You put it right in front of him. Yeah, it’s good. All right, so uh we’re here at Millersport Highway, uh Wing Nuts, 1402 Millersport, hanging out with Mitch Morris, former Bills, uh center. Take me into tomorrow for you because it is going to be unlike any game day that you’ve ever experienced. and maybe more pressure than you’ve ever felt because you are going to go weave your way through the tailgates. You’re going to be squirting ketchup and mustard. It’s going to be an absolute crazy party and then they’re going to ask you in front of 70,000 people to not screw it up. Yeah. Yeah. How you feeling about that? Terrified. Uh horribly terrified. And that’s the nice thing is actually having something to kind of cap the good vibes. Okay. All right. So, for me, it’s going to be trying to be invested in what’s going on. Be fluid. We talked about it a bunch. Have a little few have a few drinks, have some fun, but also be you don’t want that you we’ve all seen the guy go up there a little too sauced up. Try to make it his own thing. Write the John letter to Buffalo. It’s kind of up there. For me, it’s about passing the baton of energy to the fans. Okay. So, it’s just sticking to the script, maybe say one or two things, and then just kind of scoopy-dooing my way over the sideline because it’s not about me, dude. I can get guys on kind of, and then just roll out and just watch the boys play. That’s what it’s all about. I love his headset. So, what does it mean to you though to be to get that call to say, “Hey, we want you to come in and be the legend of the game for this matchup against the Saints.” Well, I think it threw a lot of people for a loop. Uh it it was the one of the most humbling experiences. It truly I wish I had the vernacular to describe what it meant to me. It’s such a privilege and it’s and on the same vein, it’s something that you don’t want to botch because that really is it’s the keys to the castle of something beautiful and bigger than yourself, right? Then it’s not yours. You’re holding it for a few seconds. So, why don’t you just have your moment, build it up, keep keep that ball rolling, and just do not screw it up, dude. That’s the biggest thing for me. So, I had a really interesting conversation yesterday, and it was right after you spoke to the team, uh, broke them down, and so I had a couple conversations with a couple, uh, current Bills players about what it meant to see you back in the building, but also kind of breaking things down. And one of the conversations was with David Edwards. Ooh. And so I’m going to give everybody a little bit of history here. When David Edwards first time with the Bills, he was coming over from the Rams and he had kind of dealt with, you know, some concussion issues over in LA. And his first press conference, I’d kind of talked to him at the end of it and I could tell the anxiety that kind of came over him when I wanted to talk about that history. And so I kind of tread lightly on that. I I wanted to wait till he was ready to talk about it. And even to this point, we haven’t quite really talked about it. And when I asked him about you and and being back, and obviously you had your struggles with concussions early in your career, this was the quote that he had about you. And I’m putting you on the spot here, and it might get a little emotional. Dave’s a man, but Dave said, “I feel like God put me in a position to come here so I could meet Mitch because I came off that concussion and he had kind of dealt with that. I really didn’t know how to navigate coming back and his grace, humility, and willingness to tell people somebody that he had just met. I’ll never forget that. I’m forever indebted to Mitch. And I wanted to read that to you and get your reaction to it. But the other thing is he told me his first couple days here, he’s at OTAAS. He’s just meeting the guys. Your family’s back in Kansas. And you say, “Hey, let’s come over. Let’s shoot some pool.” And he said it was like three hours of conversation. I mean to have that kind of impact on him, react to what he said, but also why you always made that a priority to pour into guys like that. Well, Dave is a special person. I mean, if you guys ever get an opportunity to meet David Edwards, he is a gym. He not only is a amazing football player, but just talk about good humans. Like he God broke the mold when they he made David Edwards. You know what I mean? And yeah, it’s one of those things that it’s a touchy subject and rightfully so. Like there’s a conversation about concussions and that’s fine. Uh and you know what, everyone has crosses to bear in this league. Mine was concussions and it was something that by the time he had gotten there I I had held that cross for quite some time, right? So this was not new waters for me and uh Dave gives me a little more credit than I deserve. But it’s another thing. It’s a it’s a people business, right? My family was gone. Dave’s family was gone. We we were just two folks hanging out and uh I love the guy. There’s nothing else to say except that those were incredibly kind words from a man that I hold at the highest regard. Uh an amazing football player who hasn’t gotten the dues I think he deserves and uh yeah, it just means the world. That’s all you want when you come back is for your friends and teammates to have that opinion. It doesn’t matter for me. Of course, I want to put good product on the field. You rent the jersey. Time is fleeting in this league, man. That that’s that’s it comes and goes, but what doesn’t come and go are the relationships you try to build. And that’s what I hold at priority. The highest priority of all is my teammates and how they view me and how I the relationships I I have with them. To hear that means I did something right in an area that I find very important. The David Edwards story is also like amongst Bills fans. There’s definitely a section that there’s a panic about Josh Allen being in the prime of his career, not getting to a Super Bowl, not winning a Super Bowl yet, and an impatience with whether it’s Shawn, Brandon, the process, all of it. But I also think that the David Edwards story is one of the pieces of the process of this regime that doesn’t get appreciated enough. They bring him in, somebody that Aaron had a history with, allow him to come back at his own pace, find a role for him until he’s ready to start. And that is, I think, why people in the building hold the two of them to such a high regard is the vision beyond just the X’s and O’s and winning. There’s a plan for each and every player that I think there’s a lot of care that goes into that and that’s from the outside looking in my perspective. Yeah, I mean that’s a great point. And there I mean this is a this is a what have you done for me lately business, right? It’s easy. We were talking to Brandon today about how do you not listen to outside noise? How do you stick to your guns? How do you manage process? You get a you get a tough phone call that you know is going to hit the media. How do you not make gut reactions or how do you do all this stuff? But when you when you make the plunge and bring someone in, they don’t do that on a whim. You have a guy like Chromemer who vouches for someone. You hold what Chromemer says to high regard. Every person walks a different path in this league, man. You have 90 guys to start with and then you have 70s something including practice squad. Navigating that, keeping personal relationships as well. It’s a transactional business, right? This is a tough business to invest in people because you know you’re going to have to have a proverbial breakup at some point. That doesn’t mean you don’t invest in folks. That doesn’t mean you don’t take the time because football’s hard. You see, you guys see it every you’re in the building. you pick up on these little things like and you have to have everyone marching at the same beat of the same drum to the best of your ability. And if you do that by just keeping it transactional or listening to the outside noise, that’s how you sync or you ride these es and flows that good good organizations don’t do. And I feel like the Bills are one of the best organizations, if not the best at doing that. And and it’s funny, this is a conversation Matt and I had recently, and you might have some bias to this as well because you are an offensive lineman. The importance of building up the O line versus getting weapons for a quarterback. You look at Cincinnati with Joe Burrow. Unfortunately, it feels like an Andrew Luck situation where his career is getting ruined. Whereas in Buffalo, Josh Allen can wins the MVP with the everyone eats mentality. So, you know, in terms of team building, why is it so important to make sure that the protection is there before you get any kind of the extra weapons, I guess, so to speak. Yeah, that’s a great question. I mean, I have a very biased opinion on this. Uh, you have an MVP back there. You want to keep them up, right? And that doesn’t mean that we don’t screw up. We don’t f up. But also, I think the one thing that the Bills have done great, you know, better than almost anyone in the league is keeping guys on the field. And that’s something that’s not totally controllable. Um, but you have a guy like Aaron Chromemer who I think is just as important as having the the right pieces. A guy that can get everyone on that same page. You have to have weapons, too. I’m not going to lie. You got to have guys that can do your thing, but you have to have an offensive line, not only that you trust, but gives you a little bit of grace that if I got to hold the ball on for an extra second or two, they’ve built up this trust. I I have rapport with these dudes and and I trust the fact that they’re going to fight their tail off. More than anything, I think that’s the most important thing as an offensive lineman. And and then you have a guy like Dave Edwards who’s won a Super Bowl, comes in cerebral player, plays next to Deion Dawkins, knows exactly what he needs to do, his role, and just works well. You have not only just investing money in guys, but having guys who work well together, and they’ve the Buffalo Bills have done a tremendous job. And I think to be honest, Bean and Sean coming from a tree that really puts a lot of investment into the big guys and and I think it’s played out very well. All right. Um, one last thing I want to ask you about, then we’ll go around the horn, give our final thoughts on this game tomorrow. Him and I will give uh a prediction. Uh, you can get in that party, too. You’re now in the media biz, so maybe you got to make those predictions now. That’s fair. That’s totally fair. But I texted you about this yesterday. You know, Josh Allen in 2025, it’s crazy to think about from 19 to now, he is one of probably one of the most popular famous athletes on the planet. And to think about that from 2018 2019 is is wild to think about. Is there something a story or an experience with him that you had over the years that might describe him that would surprise people a little bit? You had some time to think about this too. I did I did have some time to think about this and every story I thought about was not conducive for telling young people. Okay. Um but the one thing I did think about that kind of showed his humanity in this whole thing. We all know his his philanthropic nature. It’s unbelievable. But I was there the night before. I was there the day before he left to go down to New York to meet his wife. Okay. It was just me and him in the locker room and he’s sitting there. I can because his locker was right next to mine. I could see he’s got this this gr he can’t keep this grin off his face and I go, “Hey man, what’s going on?” He runs over his little Josh run over. He’s like, “Hey man, I’m heading to New York City. I got to show you this show I I don’t even read the name, but I see that this guy’s got 30 million view.” And he goes, “Buddy, I’m in love.” Yeah. Yeah, I I I don’t think he’d even met the gal yet. He It was just like a child, man. It was just like unadultered, just like he was so excited. And then, of course, the TMZ thing came on. But I think the biggest thing is that, and and this is not news to anyone, but professional football players have just the same emotions as every one of you guys in here. We go through the es and flows of life. We have these full range of emotions. and to see just the giddy 12-year-old in him to go meet a meet a special girl that he met and now we look at it he’s married and I wish I had something juicier for you but I think no I if you ask if you ask him 10 years when he’s retired I might have a few more stories for you but right now that’s all I can give you well it’s funny you bring that up because I feel like we see that in him every day right like that that’s kind of the essence of Josh right like he has the world in his hand he’s the arguably the best quarterback in the league but when you’re out there and he’s amongst all the guys he looks like that 12-year-old almost every single day. Well, and that’s what galvanizes the locker room. You know exactly what you’re going to get and he we were talked about earlier like it’s a transactional leap. Uh a year in the NFL is a lifetime in regards to relationships and of course how you play and what your body feels like. I’m only had 10 of these lifetimes. Josh, God willing, has 15, 20 of these. But he still makes the conscious effort to get to know every single dude, practice squad, anyone in there. And when you do that and you take that and it’s organic and you know it’s real and that’s who he is, you’d go die for the dude. So that’s that’s all I got to say about Josh. He’s the best, man. All right, let’s uh go around the horn here. Uh final thoughts on the Saints Bills game tomorrow and then prediction. Yeah, final thoughts. I just don’t think that the Saints have the horsepower to keep up with the Bills. The Bills are so balanced on offense now between James Cook running the ball, Josh Allen being so efficient with it. I think Buffalo makes a statement early and they pull away with this game 3813. So, I got another big time score as well. I’m going 4521 Bills. I don’t like what I’ve seen defensively from the Saints, especially on third down. The Bills are one of the most uh effective team offenses in the league on third downs. And my player to watch, I’m giving it away tomorrow on Bills Kickoff Live. Jackson Haw has been one of the funnest stories to talk about. And to me, this is a game where he’s going to be able to maybe set the tone a little bit. I think James Cook is in line for a big game. And I also think, don’t forget about Ray Davis. It’s been slow out of the gates, but I think this could be a game where the Bills get up early and they got to rely on that run game. Maybe you see Ray Davis get a little bit more involved tomorrow. Yeah, I think it’s going to be a little bit closer game than you think. I I mean, I was in a position last year where you’re going and you just have nothing to lose. Come up here and I know that’s just kind of the sentiment that you’re going to get, but you’re also in Buffalo where you’re going to get everyone’s best. I think the Bills are going to put points up, but I don’t think the Saints are going to lie down. I think it’s going to be 3121. All right. 30 31-21. 3121. Final prediction. Um, all right. Before we get out of here, I see my wife mean mugging me. Favorite ride at Disney World. Oh, whatever my whatever my wife got a lightning for. Uh, I would say of of late, my favorite thing is uh Tiana’s Tiana’s right. The only thing is that you just it’s the logs are so close your knees are killing you. I got sciatica. It feels like uh but it’s whatever my wife I can tell you what I don’t like. This little Dumbo thing my kids love where you just ride it and your son my son can navigate with it goes up and down. This stinker goes oh it’s just insane. But uh it’s just kind of it depends. And I think the great thing about Disney, especially going with a family, is that my answer with that might change every single time depending on where we are and the experience we’re having. Yeah. So, for me, it’s it’s definitely got to be Guardians of the Galaxy. Mainly because my riding partner right here, uh, we we go on and we try to figure out um what song we’re going to get, and it becomes almost like a sport in in the sport. Uh, a fun time when we wait. Get your riding partner over here. Let’s see what he’s got rocking today. Come here. Come on in here, buddy. Hey, give him a little round of applause. Come here. All right, so he came fully suited. I can see that, dude. He’s got the pads on. Hey, these are legit. You hear that? That means he’s got some substance in there, guys. Hey, I appreciate you coming out, buddy. It means a ton. If you ever want to go ride some stuff at Disney, I live in Jacksonville. It’s only about two two hours away. I can make a jaunt down there. It’s not too hard. There you go. And then we won’t have to be like flying by each other like uh ships in the night, right? All right. Mitch Morris, Brian Talbet, I am Matt Pino.
