I know this will get little volume, but I want to expand on this.
The Cubs had an every 3 year thing going on in this point in their history.
They made the World Series in 1929, 1932, 1935, and 1938 but did not win any of them.
The Cubs won the pennant after going on a 10 game winning streak in late September of 1938. This was game 9 of a 10 game winning streak from September 22nd through the 29th (two doubleheaders on the 22nd and 23rd) and came against the Pittsburgh Pirates. This vaulted them to lead the NL standings by a half of a game. The next day they won against the Pirates again to have a 1.5 game lead with 3 games to go.
They eventually lost 2 of 3 to the Cardinals in early October to end the season ahead of the Pirates by 2 games, and went on to the 1938 World Series, but got swept by the Yankees.
Gabby Hartnett was the 1935 NL MVP and is a member of the Baseball Hall Of Fame. He was a Cub from 1922 through 1940 and then played one last season with the NY Giants in 1941.
