🔴LIVE 🔴Arizona Diamondbacks VS San Diego Padres /September 28/ Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25

West match up on the show. It’s the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres’s. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Welcome [Music] San Diego Padres. Just about to get started. And our starting pitcher here today, Dylan Cece. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters. Not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Heraldo Peromo leading things off and takes a strike. First pitch 640. Fouled off. He was late. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and there’s one down. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. But with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So very difficult to get the barrel on it. CE certainly has electric stuff. Considered by many to be a strikeout pitcher. He might not be at the top level in that category, but strikeouts a big part of his game. That one almost got him. One out. Base is empty. And he doesn’t beat himself. I mean, he’s going to throw strikes. He’s not going to issue many free passes. And he’s going to keep the ball in the ballpark. So when you look at that, he’s not completely preventing hitters from hitting home runs, but he’s so consistent that you look up by the time he gives the ball over. It’s the sixth or seventh inning and there’s one or two runs on the board at most. Squang a highf fly ball. Wells way back there holds it in on the warning track. Now the Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavello and a key factor for this club in that leadoff spot. Peraldo Peromo. Well, these days we know teams, you know, they put a game plan together for every hitter in a lineup, but a guy like this, they circle him, make sure he doesn’t beat you. Uh so, you know, they put in a little extra time and effort and on how they’re going to approach him. He can be a huge difference maker when he’s hot. So, it’s going to be fun to see how they try to work him right here. Corbin Carroll at the plate now. That’s ball one. There’s a strike. And that one is inside. Hoo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Out of bounce right side. Croninworth throws on to first and that’s the third out. So one, two, three go to Diamondbacks. And now the Padres’s get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. back here at Petco Park and towing the slab in this one. Number 56 and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Luis Arise the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one. Arise starting as the designated hitter. 27 years old and he was born in Venezuela. Line drive. McCarthy pulls it down. And there’s one down. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. Chris, this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else, it’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Manny Machado batting with one down takes a strike. You know, Boo, Petco Park seems to be transforming into Machado’s castle. I mean, nobody’s hit more home runs in this ballpark. And Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023. And that’s down a base head. just kind of sliced that one into center. Hitting is really easy for some guys. One thing that I can see already, his bat stays in the zone on plane for an extended period of time. And guys like that, they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane. And even when you don’t get it great, it’s still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder. Machado at first, one gone. Here goes the runner. Swing and a miss. Throw to second. Tag out at second. Usually when you see a team try to steal a base in the early innings, it tells you they want to be aggressive on offense. Try to force the defense to make plays and slow them down. That’s exactly what they did right there. So, we’ll see if that caught stealing changes the offensive approach moving forward. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. There’s a swing and a drive and it’s out of here. He’ll touch them all. his 17th of the year and it gives him the lead in the first. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. an outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. So, two away with nobody on. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Two out. Space is empty. Swing and a miss. And it’s on two. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. The two just misses the mark outside the zone. Was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That one the other way and he boots it. Still able to fire over. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning, but the Padres’s draw first blood here on the solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. Major League Baseball is on the show back here in San Diego. And here’s the first baseman, Gabrielle Moreno. Cease back to work. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Dylan fouled off down the right side. Swings and blasts one deep to left center that skips over the fence. So it’s an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Adrien Del Castillo stands in now for the Diamondbacks. Slider for a strike. No outs. brought her on second. Had some cut action to it. Velocity pretty good on that slider so far. Moving the ball around nicely. Joe McDonald doing the home play duties here. Well, Joe’s an interesting one. I’m always trying to figure out what exactly his zone is. Feels like it kind of moves around from game to game, sometimes inning to inning. pitch misses there. Two balls, two strikes. Yeah, I think that’s fair. I don’t think he’s ever way off with his balls and strikes, but yeah, I don’t think it’s easy to define what his zone is. Like you said, outside corner got him looking. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Bla1 Alexander. Eddie Deals. Alexander started after it. Tried to hold up. Now a look to first. No swing. One out and a runner at second here in the top of the second. The one-1 is fouled off. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Foul ball still a one and two count. Strike him out. That’s a little bit low. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched it. And ball four to a board. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. Alec Thomas now and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. [Music] the one and that is out of play. One out. Runners at first and second. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fired to second onto O’Harn. Two. They made it look easy, but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the shortstop. Perfect turn and they’re out of this jam. And we’re back. Bottom of the second. Here’s Sander Bogart now. Sander Bogart. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. the one. He had a foul ball outside with a breaking ball. [Applause] And there’s a ball. [Music] Let’s go X foul ball left side. He’ll see another battling here as he fouls it away. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Bogarts checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. No swing. He held up. Carl Dixon with the call there. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. [Applause] Ryan O’Harn stands in here. Leaves that one off the inside in the dirt. Blocked. Bogarts gets his lead at first with nobody out. [Applause] called strike right there. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. Three and two now. Twins and misses. It’s a strikeout and an excellent job keeping it right there. Really good hard bite to that breaking ball for the strikeout right there. I mean, he was able to bury it down below the zone and that’s throwing the pitch with conviction. Good thing for the pitcher, he’s not going to miss in the zone and that’s where you get hurt. Excellent execution with two strikes. That could be a big weapon for him in this start. Pickoff throw. Bogards dives back. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. That one out to right. Carol and there’s two down. Batting eight. Second baseman Jay Croninworth. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. [Music] And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. swings through that really consistent release point. He’s been able to pitch up and down and have excellent command in both locations. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. couldn’t catch up to the heater. One left for San Diego. They lead it one- nothing. On to the third inning, leading off number 13. Number 13. And that drops in for a strike. Looks like he sacrificed a pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. Gets him to chase after that one. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter into an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. Next pitch is in the dirt. One and two to count. And a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Next to hit for Arizona, Jake McCarthy. Bunch attempt, but that goes foul. [Music] Not close with that one. One and one. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with swang and a miss. That one at 99 and it’s one and two. [Applause] One down, base is empty. That one not close. Three and two now. He’s dealing with a great two- strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. stays alive and a payoff pitch. And there’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. So, back to the top of the Arizona lineup. Next to hit, Heraldo Peromo. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Lifted in the air right field. Lauraniano sizing this one up. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Catel Marte up to the plate. Fly to right. His first time. He might want to steal second in this spot, but he’s dealing with a catcher that has one of the best pop times in the game. He needs to pick his spot very wisely. Check swing called strike. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. [Applause] Ball one there. And that one misses up and in. And it’s two and two. moved to first. McCarthy dives back in safely. Swaying at a ball popped in the air and it stays fair. Cut off. Throw to second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. That was a pretty good pitch. Breaking ball down and in, but when it’s breaking in towards you, you have a lot of time to see it and just try to get on plane with it. He hit that one pretty well. So, the go-ahehead run in scoring position. This is Corbin Carroll. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score too. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck and it’s caught just in front of the wall. No runs, a hit, two left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Padres’s one and the Diamondbacks nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. So digging in now for San Diego, Freddy Fine. First pitch and he just misses. swing and a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Luis Arise stands in 0 for one so far. Squirts away a little bit. Firm mean aboard here at first with nobody out. Swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting third baseman Machado. Here’s Machado. One for one with a single so far. There’s the strike, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Line drive to short and caught. Nice swing and good solid contact. That ball was smoked, but needed a little more lift to get into the outfield gap. Maybe a little more backspin. Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. He’s already homered here in this one. Merrill. First pitch misses. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. Let’s go. And he can’t come up with it. And no shot to get him at first. There’s two aboard. I think he got a little casual on that play and took it for granted a little bit. So maybe just as much of a mental mistake as a physical one. And with two outs, that’s a tough one to swallow for the entire defense. First and second, two outs. Now the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. That one ripped. That’s down. One hops off the wall. One run across. Relay throw home in there. He’s saved. and they’re up by three. Gets the job done as he brings home a pair. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that, but he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. And a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts. Right through there for a strike. Runner at second, two down here in the last half of the third. And that one a little below the knees and the count even one and one activity in the Arizona bullpen. Number 55 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Number 50 also getting ready. Next offering misses ball two. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. In for a strike and the count is even. Two and two. Man on second, two down. Ground ball right side and that’s just foul. Still two and two after the foul ball. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Slings to first. Bogart’s retired. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But they’ll pick up a couple runs here. Both coming on this two-run double. It’s now three nothing. Back here at Petco Park. New inning getting started. Now, here’s the cleanup hitter for Arizona, Gabrielle Moreno. You know, the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn. Yes, Tony Gwyn. They had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004, and Tony managed San Diego State to a win. Well, the offense has gotten going, and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot. Breaking ball misses down and away. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. Generally second, third time through the lineup. You want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Up the middle. Whips it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Now up next for Arizona, Adrien Del Castillo struck out looking in his first at bat. Fast ball for a strike that misses. And one and one the other way. And that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second. And he’ll pull into second safely. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. One out, runner at second. Alexander digs in now. Swing and a miss. 41. Del Castillo leads off second with one gone in the inning. And that one goes straight to the back stop. He’s in there. Del Castillo up to third on the wild pitch. Nice job right there recognizing the wild pitch and being able to move up to third because of it. Now they’ve got more options in terms of finding a way to bring him home. Runner on to third. One gone. Let’s do it. That one ripped right center field. That’s back. Bangs off the wall. In comes the runner from third. It’s 3-1. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Put a really nice balanced swing on it. And when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box. And he’ll feel real good about that one. One out, runner at second. Now it’s the DH, Alec Thomas. He hit into a double play his first time up. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 32. puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. Here’s the center fielder just off the outside edge. Ball one. Come on. Just missed and he chases a high fast ball there. Wow, good luck catching up to that one. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering is fouled back. Throw to first. Thomas back on a dive. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score the ball in the gap. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. That’s a pretty nasty pitch right there. I’d call it a power curveball in the 80s. It’s got so much spin on it and you really don’t have a lot of time to sit back and watch what it’s going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swinging strikeout. Now a chance for Jake McCarthy. Walked his first time. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Two runs across in the inning. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is fouled back. That’s down and in. A slider missed. [Applause] And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. They get two runs on three hits. No errors and one left. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Padres’s three and the Diamondbacks two. Ready to go. Bottom four. And now the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. Ryan O’Harn. Oh, 31 years old and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2014. In there at the knees, strike one. You know, these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. Headed towards the corner and it stays fair and that’s a leadoff double. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Lauraniano comes up to hit. He’s 0 for one. There’s the strike. And that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there, it may force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later. Runner in scoring position, nobody out. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and ball one. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Del Castillo makes the grab. One away. Going to have to have a little more discipline in future at bats. That pitch looked good, but you can’t hit it. It was just too high in the zone. You usually see a swing and miss or weak contact in the infield. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Ripped on a line and foul ball. Croninworth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side and a foul ball. The O2 and that’s in the dirt. O’Harn the runner at second with one away. Misses inside and the count is two and two. That one missed. [Applause] Come on. Here we go. In the air, left field down the line. Grabs it on the run. Two away. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. Stepping in for San Diego. Freddy Fine. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. Padres. Fought off foul. Two outs and one in scoring position. Just outside now one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Let’s go. Let’s go. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. Andy’s registered three Ks in this one. No runs, one hit, a double, no errors, and one man left. We’re headed to the fifth. It’s the Padres’s three and the Diamondbacks two. All set for the start of the inning. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Peraldo Peromo. Cease back to work. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen. Nick Paveta, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Estrada, the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. And this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Foul ball there inside and the count’s even at two and that skips in the spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. Good job to fight that one off. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. He forced a lot of pitches to be thrown and ends up collecting a hit. Just one of those at bats you almost hate to see come to an end. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Dylan Cease done for the night. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Now they go with one of their more experienced arms in this spot, Nick Pavetta. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. Here’s Catel Marte. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Runner at first with no outs here. That one finds the corner and the count one and one. [Music] There’s the strike of the knees with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Hard ground ball for a base knock. [Music] Rudder stops at second and the first two reach to start the inning. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one. He pulled it hard into the outfield and even when you keep it on the ground, it feels great when you hit a missile like that. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks and that’s downstairs and it’s one and0. Highfly ball down the left field line. Sheets on a dead sprint. Racing back. reaches for it, but it’s fouled. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that is a big first out. Oh, that’s pretty much the dream two strike curveball if you’re the pitcher. hard downward break at the very end that just dips below the swing path. And they say pitchers want to try to bounce that pitch right on top of the plate. So that was exactly what he was looking for on the mound. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Gabrielle Moreno one for two and that one fouled off. Got the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play. Boo. Swing and a ball driven out to center. That one carrying and out of here. A towering shot to center and they take the lead. It’s 53. The one thing the pitcher didn’t want to happen just happened. That’s not an easy one to stomach. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. One down. Next up for the Diamondbacks, Adrien Del Castillo. That’s down and in. One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Ground ball up the middle and that one handled. Jump throw across his body. It’s there and that’s a great play. Now batting third baseman Bla1 Alexander. Two outs. Base is empty. Now the third baseman Bla1 Alexander. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball one. One ball. No strike. That’s in there. [Applause] Swing and a high-fly ball in the air left field. corrals it and that is that. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now a 53 ball game. Back here in San Diego, John Shami with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five. Luis Azri. Let’s go San Diego. Fast for a strike. You know, these Padres’s simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. A handful have turned into outs, but of the balls they’ve put in play, 10 have been line drives. I say keep barreling the ball and good things will happen. Don’t let that get you frustrated. That misses now. One and two. [Applause] This one lifted in the air left field. McCarthy settles under it. Puts it away for the out. Now batting third base. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Number 56 won’t go any further and he had to battle. Nothing came easy in this start, but he leaves with a lead. New arm when we get back. Now pitching for Nabil Krismat gets the call from the pen and compared to a lot of other relievers strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. Here’s Manny Machado. That’s outside and that is ball one. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. The D-Max leading by two. Last half of inning number five. Next pitch is downstairs. ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. One gone runner at first. Next for the Padres’s, Jackson Merrill. That one outside. And that’s ball one. Let’s keep it going. [Music] swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And this game is tied. It’s 55. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run. And that’s exactly what they needed. [Applause] When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Gavin Sheets. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Fast ball gets the corner at the knees. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole, he’s going to have to battle. I’ll hope he gets a mistake. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] This to third. Alexander over to first. Two gone. Good fade and sinking action of that change up. Got that hitter to roll over. Xander Bogart. Now Xander Bogarts gets a chance to hit. You talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list and first offering is fouled off [Music] [Applause] and that one missing low. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. Swings and misses. Had him out front for strike three. Two across on this San Diego homer. All even at five apiece. And we’re back. All set for the top of the six. And now the DH. Alec Thomas on the ground to short. Bogarts fields it cleanly. Throws to first and a quick out number one. Now batting number 13. And now the center fielder both for two in this one. There’s the strike. Activity in the bullpen for San Diego. Adrien Morome. The southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Hart getting cranked up as well. That’s a little bit low one and one and two fights it off. He’ll see another. All tied up and we’re the top half of the sixth outside low and it’s three and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out and that quickly two away. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach, just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach, figure out how they’re beating him. Make this adjustment really quick cuz Word will get around the league in a hurry. Hit in the air left field. Sheets brings it in and that’ll do it. Three up, three down that time. 6782 in the bottom of the sixth. We’re all tied up 55 and welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the six. So digging in now for San Diego, Ryan O’Harn. Chopper right side and a foul ball. [Music] And it’s even up. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Jaylen Beaks, a lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Number 54 getting loose as well. [Music] on the ground out to short. One up, one down. [Music] Up next for the Padres’s right fielder, Raone Lauriano. The next up for the Padres’s this to third and Lauriano is retired. Now batting second base Jake Cronin. And now Jake Croninworth. All right, let’s go. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He’s great hitting the ball the other way. And that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Cut on and miss. Good change up right there. And the count one at one. ripped on the ground to second. Marte throws to first in time. Padres’s go down one, two, three. Nothing doing there for the Friars and this remains a five5 ball game. Adrien taking over on the mound. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Heraldo Peromo getting ready to hit one for three. [Music] And there’s the strike. Some hitters are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher. They don’t care if they fall behind 01. drilled out towards left center field. There we go. And there’s one down. An outstanding hitter in Catel Marte. Well, both sides equally as strong. So, not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Oh, just a cement mixer slider right there. It’s a great pitch to hit if you can recognize it early and jump on it. And that’s in for a strike. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Ground ball left side. Zips it to first. They get the out on Marte. Now batting right fielder Corbin Carroll. Corbin Carroll stands in now for the Diamondbacks. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strikeout. And first offering is fouled off on the ground right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. Nothing doing for Arizona. Our score holds at five apiece. [Applause] Now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Number 54. He’s pitching on two days rest. Stepping in for San Diego. Freddy Fine. Ready for mean. Fouled off left side. [Music] ball. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. And he dodges that fast ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Went back to the fast ball and it was effective. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location but he found a way to just get it by him. So up next, Luis Az line drive. He makes the catch and there’s two down. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. And Manny gets a piece. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. Next pitch downstairs going to count one and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Misses two and two. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Alexander whips it across. Three up, three down. Inning over. Padres’s go down quietly. This ball game still tied. Five all. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Kyle Hart. And he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Kyle, stepping in, Gabrielle Moreno. He’s already homerred in this game. That catches the outside corner. That’s strike one. Movement in the bullpen. Robert Suarez up and loosening in the pen and fouled off. [Applause] Got him. And that’s the first down. And now Adrien Del Castillo. Adrien Delo. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate to try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. And a big swing and a miss. Going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. Just missed. All tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth. This to center field. Merryill makes the grab on the run. They trust him in center field because he’s capable of making plays on the run. And we saw it right there. That’s a player you want patrolling center field. Someone who can attack the ball off the bat. Alexander stands in here, takes ball one low. Right through there for a strike. Diego and a swinging a miss up and in. And it’s two and two. Slow roller to third. Machado throws to first in time. That’s out number three. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Jaylen Beats. And they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. 345 do up for the home team. Now Jackson Merrill. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. in the air pretty deep out to center field. Drops into the glove and there’s one away. Now batting left fielder Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. Though he came out clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach. Think hard right back up the middle. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Action in the pen down there. A right-hander is up and throwing. [Music] [Applause] popped up foul territory behind the plate. And there’s two down. Now batting the shortstop. Here’s Xander Bogarts. hit in the air center field. He makes the grab and that ends the inning. It’s the ninth and we are tied. We go to the ninth. Now it’s the DH Alec Thomas. Hart back to work. That one clips the outside corner and that is strike one. Let’s go. One, one. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. [Applause] Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] [Applause] And the sweeper misses for a ball. Uh-oh, that got him. And the potential winning run is aboard. Substitution now at first base. Coming in as the pinch runner, Jordan Lawler. Go ahead run on base. Here’s the center fielder. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. Well, with pretty good speed over there at first base, I think the pitcher’s got to slow everything down. Hold the ball a little bit, step off, just try to break the rhythm and timing of a potential base stealer and a sack bun here in plenty of time to first. And that’s an out on the sacrifice. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jake McCarthy now at the plate inside move to second. Lawler dives back in, but they got him. It’s so rare that the pitcher is able to be that quick and make an accurate throw to second base. It’s just not a normal thing for him to do, but does a really nice job there of getting it to that middle infielder and the tag being put on the runner. Nice pickoff right there. First offering and it just misses. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late just off the inside edge. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. Gets the call and it’s two and one. [Applause] And strike two. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. down. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So they make short work of him there. 678 scheduled to start the bottom of the ninth. We’re all tied up 55. All set for the bottom of the ninth. And here’s the first baseman, Ryan O’Harn. [Applause] Swinging a foul out of play. No. Off the plate. Activity in the bullpen. Number 27 up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello. Pitch misses there and it’s two and one. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was late. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder up the middle. A dive. Nice stop. Not in time. Great effort there, but now the go-ahead run is on it first. Wow. He did everything he could on that play with the throw from his knee, but the hustle down the line was enough to earn him the infield knock. And that’s a great baseball play all the way around. No outs. Runner at first. Raone Lauraniano the next up for the Padres’s. That will close rule to ball. Ball one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Winning run on base at first. No outs. [Applause] Sliced hard but foul. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] Oh, and this one’s blasted high. It’s on its way out of here. Ball game. He’ll circle the bases and the Padres’s walk it off. [Applause] Hitting a walk-off homer is the kind of thing you dream about growing up. You’re in the backyard. You’re creating the most pressure-p packed scenario. And what do you do? You come through with the big swing. Well, he was living a childhood moment right there. Nice swing of the bat. Nice win for the team. A 75 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
