Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Jonathan Aranda Makes POWERFUL Return From Injury

Jonathan Aranda makes it just in time to show why he’s a core piece moving forward. You are Locked on Rays, your daily Tampa Bay Rays podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome into the Locked on Rays podcast. Locked on Rays is part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. and we are Kevin and Ulissiz and we are Lifelong Rays fans who’ve been podcasting about the Tampa Bay Rays since 2019. Later on today’s show, we discuss why the 2025 season was way worse than the 2024 losing campaign. In a few minutes, the Rays should feel vindicated in extending Drew Rasm Musen. But to start, Jonathan Aronda made his return to the Rays at the season’s tail end and it’s been good so far. And we’re going to talk all about that and much more thanks to Fivehour Energy. Enough with the boring flavorless caffeine people. It’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with fivehour energy shots. Go to 5hour energy.com or Amazon today. Jonathan returning speaks highly Kevin and I mean highly of his makeup. Last weekend before last last week last week yeah sometime ago some time ago some episodes ago no more than five um we were saying don’t do not come back I don’t I don’t need to see you come back your place is secure Jonathan you know I don’t want you to just like go out there and and and reheurt yourself in a threeame series in Toronto Bob Seymour’s not taking your spot You’re good. That means nothing. You’re fine. Exactly. Okay. I said all that. You agreed with me, right? Okay. He’s not Richie Palasio. He’s not Johnny Duca. But then he still comes back, man. And wouldn’t you know it, couple home runs during the weekend. First home run happened on his first AB. And it’s that kind of showmanship, that kind of entertainment value that we saw from Jonathan. that’s so well paired with the work ethic, man. He could have just been like, you know, it really doesn’t feel good enough right now. Like he had every reason in the book to say no. And and the coaching staff in the front office had all the reasons to say no, it’s fine. Don’t do it. But I am just so impressed with his work ethic and saying no, I am going to come back and I am going to do it in a meaningless three-game series that means nothing to the team. It means nothing to the team. They’re out the the basically the the the what are you playing for? Not being last in the division. They don’t get spoiler in the AL East for somebody, I guess. Right. Exactly. No, but he comes back and I I just I’m very It’s been very cool to see a guy that has raked in every level like Jonathan finally get an open lane in 2025 and show out and and we can actually see a guy who’s worked hard all his life in the production is finally showing up in the biggest stage. Yeah, credit to him for coming back and showing pop because that was the big question mark is if he comes back with that wrist issue that he’s dealing with that’s saps your power like nothing else seemingly and he’s like, “Yep, no matter. I can still uh hit a couple boppers.” And you just wonder how the complexion of this season could have changed to some extent if he was in the lineup pretty much every day. But we’ll pretty much have to wait until 2026 to see that. But, uh, he’s a great example of you you’re kind of played around with for a couple seasons, you finally get an opportunity to start and make an impact. And he completely took advantage of it. And, you know, I I know we had talked about, hey, what’s the point? It’s only couple games that you have left. The Rays aren’t playing for anything. They can’t even play for 500 at this point. But I also get it from his perspective of and in the Raids were even like, “Yeah, we’re not even sure if he says he can come back that we’re not even sure if we’re going to put him in the lineup.” But you were out for an extended period of time and you’re working to get back, you probably just want to have that feeling of getting back into a major league game because it’s going to be a long time before you have that opportunity again. It’s going to be another six months or so. So, I get it from from that aspect of it. Uh, but it’s not like he had any, to my knowledge, any incentives or bonuses tied to number of games played or number of home runs or anything like that. Um, but I think he just wanted to kind of he he likes playing ball. Uh, it’s it’s not just about the money for him. And, you know, he I I think it’s it’s a nice it’s a nice footnote um for him, especially going into 2026, that hey, I’ve still got it. Don’t forget about me. I know everybody’s talking about Brandon Laauo and Yandi Diaz and Junior Camroero. Let’s not forget and and I’ll I’ll die on this hill. Even if Jonathan Aronda didn’t get injured, I’m still convinced he would bat 300 at least. Yeah. No. And again, he was the most solid consistent offensive produ uh producer in by the All-Star game. Like he was the allar. And you know, let’s also not forget that the biggest acknowledgement of that was that he was voted in by by other players to the All-Star game. So, that was pretty cool. Um, you you said something there with, you know, I’m not gonna I’m not gonna see you live ball, so let me just get in there in a major league game to see my my work being paid off. Let me get that feeling. I I’ve I’ve rehabed for a reason. You know what? I I I like that idea because usually this is where I would say, “Hey, don’t worry. Winter league is coming.” But as we know, the more success you show in Major League Baseball, the less apt, the less uh probabilities are that you’re going to be playing in winter league because now you’ve established yourself in the biggest stage. So there’s really no need to go to winter league game. Now you use that time to rest, not to work on some things because now you’re like an established guy. I think Jonathan Randa’s 2025 season has given him that little leverage of saying I don’t have to go to winter league. I don’t have to. Now after coming back from from this injury, maybe he does. Maybe he’s like, “No, I I missed a portion. I I I can go back.” But just the the impetus of just saying no, I am going to go ahead and fly under Toronto with my team and show up. That was awesome. It makes you think what could have been. I don’t think Jonathan by himself adds you more than two, maybe three wins on the stretch run. It would it have been enough? No. But again, like we played with uh the Franca the other day, it’s the lineup construction. if they’re there, they make the other guys around them better and then that could increase the total wins. But, you know, his comeback makes you think if you bet on players, not just for their talent, but on the type of makeup that they have, just like what Jonathan Randa just showed us this weekend, it really gave me vibes of Drew Rasmusson’s comeback. And so let’s stick to talking talking about exceptional work ethic and talk about that other all-star caffeine just got a flavor upgrade people. 5hour energy shots deliver tasty caffeine in 17 bold flavors. 17. Ray is part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. Yes. Let’s talk about another guy who was an all-star and who has shown work ethic off the charts. Drew Rasmusson. We all know third major surgery. He comes back, but then the Rays did something unexpected, which was giving him a two-year extension with a club option for the third year. And look at that how that turned out in 2025. So, I would say Drew Rasmusson’s 2025 season, comeback season, vindicates that raise extension. And for those of you that have forgotten how the extension worked, let’s remind you the deal guarantees $8.5 million to Drew, but it could be worth up to 28 million. Uh, he received $2 million in 2025 with a $500,000 signing bonus. In 2026, he will get paid $5.5 million. And then the agreement includes an $8 million club option for 2027, which would be his first year as a free agent. So they would be able to buy that out. But that $8 million club option, Kev, could increase up to $20 million. Tyler Glass now level money there. Um, and that option can be bought out for $500,000. So I think after you the season from getting to 15 50 innings and what he showed in production, I mean this guy was so automatic. He only allowed more than five hits three times this season and he only allowed more than three runs twice. It’s like every time he’s on the bump, you’re like, we have a really good chance of winning this game. It was like when the Twins had Johan Santana on the on the bump for like six years, you’re like, uh, we can win this game hands down. Yeah. And here’s what to your point, here’s what Kevin Cash said about Drew Rasmus. It felt like every time he took the ball, we were going to win the game. So I think that’s what stands out the most. When it’s your day to pitch and the team feels really good about it, that we’re going to win that day. And that’s a credit to him. and a credit to him getting 30 plus starts, 150 innings, and a 276 ERA along with a 10 and5 record. And uh it does have me kind of a the extension is awesome and the Ray should feel vindicated in that taking a risk a flyer on a guy that has had three elbow surgeries. Um because that that is something that’s not made in a vacuum. you you really have to consider well one more issue and are we going to be hook on the hook for all this money and and pretty much what he’s done this year pretty much you know uh pays for that entire extension but what you mentioned about 2027 when he’ll get that base salary of $8 million assuming the club option is activated but it could increase to $20 million that tells me that we may see duress musen in a Rays uniform for one more season because even as good as he is, uh the the Rays don’t go around paying pitchers $20 million. One pitcher $20 million. Do you do you think how far into this Zaloopski reign in the Zupki regime? How far into it are we going to start seeing different types of mentality towards contract extensions or or will we never see that? I I think it it could shift a little bit, but remember you we we also have the new stadium floating over the head and the Wander Franco contract floating over the head. So, um let’s just enjoy the Drew Rasmusen ride for the rest of this year and in 2026 and see what happens in 2027. But Drew is really a testament to a guy. He’s not really a high strikeout or high whiff percentage dude, but he makes up for it with not walking anybody. When he allows contact, it’s w contact and it’s ground balls and and his it really the majority of his repertoire are essentially three fast balls. He has the steamer, the sinker, and the cutter. And yeah, he’ll mix in some other offsp speeded stuff here and there, but that’s pretty much his bread and butter. and he’s able to to live by that. So, you know, it kind of goes to show you that you don’t have to be one of these guys that strikes out a million dudes to be successful. Yeah. No, it’s it’s he does it a little bit different. And but the thing that he has always been very constant is the runs allowed. Really? It’s it’s you know that he’s never going to allow more than three runs. It’s really uncanny. Yeah. It’s a a Drew Rasmusen line. usually goes with five innings, no no runs scored. Six innings, two runs allowed. Five innings, one run allowed. Six innings, two run. Like that’s how we that’s how he works. Okay, let’s and let’s throw the eventual four inning, three innings, scoreless. Like he is just a machine, man. I I I I agree with you. the the season that he put up this year, it’s basically the whole money that you you would be paying him has already been given with the production. Like, would you not pay Kevin, would you not pay $20 million for the for Drew Rasmus’s production? Of course you would. That would be a because they’re paying Frankie Montas $17 million. They’re playing Luis Severino around the same amount of money. We saw how Noah Synergard was giving a $20 million contract and did the opposite of this. So the money, the production is such a bargain. Just like with Brendan Laau, just like with Yandi Diaz, it’s it’s really unfathomable to think that they would get rid of such production at such a lower value. The issue is like you’re saying the Rays have this elephant in the room and the size of the elephant is a stadium and you can’t look away from that reality. Yeah. And you just hope we hope that it was it’s more of a want than a necessity that Stu was doing this sort of budgeting and that Saloopski coming in can say $20 million. We can we can pay that and still, you know, we can we can we can cook and clean. We don’t only have to cook here in this regime. We can do both things. it’ll I mean you already have a lot of team friendly deals with Yandi and Brandon and Junior Camro is not getting paid yet. Jonathan Aronda is not getting paid yet. So I feel like you can make it work. And I’ll also say this about Drew S. Mson. Uh I’ll I’ll uh be the champion for him being the opening day starter in 2026 just based on what he did this year. And again going back to that calculated risk and the Rays feeling vindicated. 2024, how many innings did he throw? 28 and 2/3. 2023, how many innings did he throw? 44 and two/3. And now 2025, 150. I’d have to go back and look. Well, okay. I I was going to try to add up if that was the most innings pitched in his career, but you know, he he’s been in the league for six seasons, but he had the the confidence that the Rays had in him to deliver this type of performance uh really speaks to the front office and saying, “Hey, injuries aside and lack of being on the field aside, we think uh he can stay healthy for a full season.” he was able to do that and let’s hope he keeps it up in 2026 because if if the Rays are without Drew R. Musen, this record would be a lot worse than what it is presently. And speaking of that, yeah, speaking of that, uh from happy points in the season like Jonathan Rhonda coming back this year and Drew Rasmusen season overall, uh we must turn the spotlight on what went wrong this year for the race. We are part of of course the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. Uh Ulisses, the 2025 season, not only is it more disappointing than 2024, but also objectively worse. Even if it’s just a couple wins fewer, as of this recording, the Rays are 77 and 84. Last year, the Rays went 80 and 82. It was a case of disappointment around for a couple reasons. Uh the Rays had a couple of brilliant stretches. They had the 25-9 run earlier in the season where they were essentially the best team in Major League Baseball for a month. And then they did for a period of time, a short period of time, gave us meaningful September baseball, winning seven in a row and getting back into the wild card conversation before uh the boat imploded and and sank and we’re at where we are right now. But and and there are a lot of positive talking points with this team like we mentioned in the first two segments, but there were also things that derailed this team. Allah injuries to Hassan Kim and Shane Mlanahan and then bullpin issues around the way. Um but when we look at it, I don’t think people have considered it or thought about it that much. Uh this will go down as I guess Kevin Cash’s second worst season as manager of the club. Uh the 2016 season being worse. So hopefully uh we we don’t regress even further. Hopefully this is the bad run and we we have a bad two-run stretch and we get back into being a winning team. Even if it’s not making the playoffs in 2026, just give me a winning season to start. Can I Can I say something that’s factual without people getting upset? No. 2025. Nobody actually hears facts anymore. But I’m going to do that. I’m going to try I’m trying to I’m I’m going to try to give facts and people don’t get upset. There’s just facts. Okay. From 2008 till 2014, the Rays go to the playoffs in ’08. 09 they don’t, but they have a positive record. 10, they they go to the the the playoffs. 2011, of course, they go to the playoffs. 2012, they don’t go to the playoffs, but they have 90 wins. 2013, they go to the playoffs. 2014, they don’t go to the playoffs. Joe Madden is out. So, I counted 08, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. In seven seasons, the Rays didn’t win, didn’t have a winning season one time, and that’s when Kevin Cash said, uh, that’s when Joe Madden said, “I’m out.” Yeah. Since Kevin Cash has been manager, 2015, 80 wins, 2016, horrible. 2017, 80 wins. 2018, let’s that then that this is his reign of power here, right? 2018, 90 wins. 2019 through 2023, guess what? A bunch of wins, World Series, just like Joe Madden. But now, something that Joe Madden didn’t have is after a reign of amazingness, two seasons of nonplayoff baseball. Joe Madden never had that. Joe Matt had one and said, “I’m out.” Kevin Cash is now two. And now we’re thinking, by the way, those were all facts, people. Those were all facts. Those were not opinions. Those are facts. My question is, although I do not think Kevin Cash should feel like his job is out to be gotten by anybody, I don’t believe there is a new ownership group with thoughts, new leaders. They might have targeted their own people to take over at some point. Sure. Sure. But it personally I don’t think and and I know that you don’t because we we’ve talked about this before. I know you don’t think like he he he needs to get the axe. However, everybody has a leash. Everybody. Everybody in every job. Your garbage man has a leash. Yeah. Mike Gundy, the Oklahoma State football coach since the beginning of time just got canned. Everybody has a leash. Yes, everybody has a leash, people, especially in the sports business, right? Yeah. How many how many losing seasons does Kevin Cash have on his leash? Cumulatively, well, I mean, he’s had two in a row right now. He’s got two in a row, but he’s got more than that. 2016, he got 2015, um, 2017. But anyway, let’s say two in a row. Is it three in a row? Is it four in a row? Is it five? Like, what’s the leash here? Yeah. Uh I I would say if he had two more losing seasons after this, I think the group would say, “Hey, we got to move in another direction because you’re trying to build some ground swell for a new stadium.” And and like we’ve said before, again, we’re not advocating or saying that Kevin Couch is going to get fired, but there is a point when the antics and the messaging, it just goes stale. Even with a team like the Rays where you’re, you know, flushing in new players left and right. But they’ve got several players that have been with the organization for five, six, seven years since basically all of Kevin Cash’s reign, you know. So, um, so that’s on one part. We just said facts. All right, Joe Madden and Kevin Cash. Okay, we’re asking about the leash, but now let me turn the spotlight into somebody else. Well, does the front office get a leash, too? Of course they do. So, now it’s also two losing seasons has been backtoback from Eric Neander and company, right? What’s his leash? Is it two more seasons? Is it five more losing seasons? I love what Kevin Cash has been saying with the quotes. I love what Eric Neander has been saying with the quotes on on how the expectancy is definitely not this. The expectancy is not only to go to the playoffs, but to be deep into the playoffs and win it all. The quotes are there from both Cash and Neander. The results not there the last two seasons. How long is now the front office? How long is Eric Neander uh leash? Now, we do know and we’ve said this last week. They are under contract. Kevin Cash, they are under contract. Eric Neander, we don’t know the money amount and we don’t know the terms. What we had seen from the articles is that they would be in place for the new stadium. Obviously, we were thinking the new stadium would be at least until 2028. So, at least we can work with that. They have a three more years under contract. Is that is that it? Is that the leash? I Yeah, I think thereabouts. Um, and it it’s just this entire season, uh, it feels like the the Rays really since they were out of playoff contention, they checked out. And it’s it’s a shame because, you know, there there were some good things from this year. We we mentioned the trio of starters that, yeah, got 30 plus starts. Junior Camro just establishing himself as a generational talent. Brandon Laauo getting 30 plus homers. Yandi Diaz uh drinking the fountain of youth. We have some rookies making an impact like Chandler Simpson and Jake Mangum. But still, even with those five, six bullet points, it’s not enough due to the other issues. And and it’s on Eric Neander, Kevin Cash, and the new ownership group to get it right and to figure out what are we missing? What holes do we need to plug to get back to having winning baseball? And um again, I I think that not saying that Neander and Cash have a lot to prove, but they will have to prove themselves over these next couple years, the new ownership group, because they don’t, you know, Zupki, again, he’s he’s his own man. He’s his he’s he he has his own ideas about things that might be different than what the status quo has been over the last several years. You can’t live off your past laurels, man. In the sports world, you can’t like you just can’t do it in any job, right? Like, oh, I used to be really good at my job 5 years ago. Yeah, but how about now, though? What have you done for me lately? That’s Yeah. What have you done for me lately? That’s exactly what it is. It’s a rude world in the sports world. So, yeah, some people are like, “Dude, it’s only two years. Why are you forgetting everything they’ve done?” I’m not forgetting it. I’m stating it, but I’m saying how long is the leash of bad results? Because you can’t blame Kevin Cash for everything. That would be silly, right? Like you can’t just say like why is he putting Bob Seymour and Taylor Walls and it’s like well that’s what he has been given. Yeah, that’s what he has. He has to put a team to feel there and then put those names out there just you know I I love Big Bob. Love Taylor Wall defense. I’m just making you got to have the right ingredients. Crap ingredients. You’re gonna have a crap meal. But exactly what what kind of ingredients are you feeding us? Right. So and that’s Neander’s job. And then for another and then if you really want to put the spotlight, which we have in the last month or so, it’s with the ownership. How much money, how many resources are you giving that front office to give you some to buy to buy to the grocery store and get you some real nice ingredients for the chef to make some nice delicious food. Yeah. And that’s Kevin Cash. Boom. That’s your simile of the day. There we go. Ketchup and Dino Nugs does not equate to a filet minion. There you go. Takes a little bit more than that. Um, so yeah, we’ll we’ll of course have a lot more to recap on the disappointing 2025 season and what specifically went wrong. And uh, yeah, the the the we are recording this before the Rays very last game of the 2025 season. And there’s really no reason to watch, honestly, if I’m being frank. I mean, it’s the only reason you should watch is because you’re going to miss race baseball for the next four. Exactly. see if um see if Jonathan Aronda can get his up to uh Yandi Diaz because I think he’s at a 3.2 and Yandi’s at 3.3 according to baseball reference or maybe he can get his 15th home run, something like that. So, so that’s what you have to go for. Um in the meantime, hope you all have a wonderful day. Stay safe and we will talk to you later.
