Yankees Do NOT Win the Division | 1288

Today is September 28th. The Yankees sweep the Orioles to end the regular season. They finish the best record in the AL. They do not win the division. Recaps awards stating hot takes. Get your Yankees news from these two fine dudes. It’s time for talking yanks. Talking yanks with old John Boy and Jake. Talking Yanks with old. Hello and welcome to Talking Yanks. Thank you very much for joining us today. My name is Jimmy. His name is Jake. BBD producing in the corner. The Yankees sprint through the finish line. They sweep the Orioles. The Blue Jays do their part to maintain the division though. Jake, how you doing? James Davis, everyone tuning in. Uh it’s a it’s a mixed bag episode. It’s uh you know, we’re going to go through a little bit of some of how we’re feeling. We’re going to recap this series. Uh we are going to do a uh wild card series preview uh probably middayish tomorrow. uh just to get into the Red Sox series, some more stats, what we’re going to be looking for there. Um but obviously, you know, before we get into this Orioles series, the the thing looming is what just went down is that the Yankees turned it on in September. Uh one of their best streaks we’ve seen, one of their best months we’ve seen to try to track down the division. um they needed one more win along the way and you can hear it in the tone of our voices that there’s a lot of wins out there this year. Uh and you know a lot of Yankee fans are eyeing that Toronto in Toronto series. The Yanks got four games swept. That was kind of peak Yankees funny business times that on on one side of the paper, the Yankees are heading into the postseason exactly how you want. Eight game winner. They lined up their rotation. The bullpen feels like it’s coming together. Uh you judging Stanton going nuts like McMahon showed a couple swings that under normal circumstances this would be how you want to do it. And yet it’s looming that it was like we were this close to getting the division and now we’re facing the Red Sox who have an ace, they have a way to torment us that there’s a scary and gut-wrenching factor to it, too. Yeah. Tomorrow we’ll do the the preview episode and hopefully I get my turtleneck on and I am like confident and um feeling really good. I uh I kept sending you guys the clip from Remember the Titans when the little girl says I wanted the Hall of Fame real bad. That I that’s that was me. I was like I want I wanted the division real bad. Um for weeks I’ve saying the last thing I want is a wild card against the Red Sox. Just in my opinion not a great matchup for the Yanks. And uh damn the Yanks are good. Like if they if they when they get past the Red Sox in the wild card, I’ll be very ecstatic about their chances. If they won the division, went straight into a fivegame set, I would have been very I would be very This wild card scares me. and uh the fact that that it comes down to the tiebreaker uh just like it did in 2021 against the Red Sox when that that gave them the um didn’t give them homefield advantage and then they lost the wild card in Fenway. It just like oh my god one game we straight up we straight up punted like three weeks because we refused to admit DJ Lameu shouldn’t be on the team and Jash shouldn’t be at third. like that dragged on way too long and now it cost us division. So, hard for me to wrap my head around that and just be happy even though they they won. Also, because like the teams are so bad, dude. Like the Rays, the Orioles, like these teams are they’re not trying anymore. Who cares? Yeah, there was there was a lot left out there and at that that time of year that you know you and me peeling back the curtain a little bit. You know, sometimes when we have to do a tough boon interview, we are not excited. That is not our brand. Uh but we try to represent like the fans the best in that moment because we get our 20 to 30 minutes with Boone and we want to ask what you want to ask that. Yeah. I mean I you know we were we were getting ready like okay we kind of haven’t had an ugly one like we need to tell Boone DJ cannot be playing and Jazz can’t be at third and so we like hit him with that to open the interview and he’s like yeah Jazz is going back to second and it’s like god damn it god damn it two hours worth of notes on this line of questioning uh that it’s like so you did realize and I Devin blowing saves uh Colton just said that in the chat like and then them not pulling him out of there for a while. Yeah, one game really haunts you. I I want to get past that. Hopefully they win uh on Tuesday. I will be in the hospital uh with my wife uh who who you know giving birth to our third baby. Fingers crossed everything goes smooth and happy. So I won’t be on the stream Tuesday night. Um hopefully they win that game. They lose that game. I’m I’m a puddle, dude. I’m a puddle. Yeah. They’ll win the game. Win that game. Why not? Why not? Like I don’t know. Max Freed has been great besides his last three playoff games. Devin Williams is great besides his last three playoff games. Judge is great besides the playoff. Like this is where my head’s at cuz it’s one game and it’s the Red Sox who tomorrow I’ll be confident. I’m so sorry for people who tuned in expecting for this to be a happy episode. I can’t believe they’re going to a wild card against the Red Sox. And the Red Sox are not a better team than the Yankees, but they be outplay them and and core outmanages bullpen moves non-stop. Yeah, it’s it’s a lot better that the Yankees won their last series against the Red Sox cuz just having seen that. Um, and yeah, hey, this isn’t a oneame wild card. This is a best of three. And you know, if this was talking socks, we’d be talking about, well, we can’t lose to Crochet game. And so if the Yankees can get crochet and win that game, like I don’t know. I believe no team has lost game one and won the wild card series though, right? Um yeah, I’d have to I’d have to double check since that new format. That might be on it. I think it’s last year. Yeah, maybe Devin. Um yeah, that was maybe the first time. So I think it’s I think it’s 11 of 12. If you win game one, you win the series. Win the game. Yeah. win the series however you have to do it. Win the series. Heat in the chat says, “Who cares? We have to get over this hump finally.” And you know what? Maybe that’s the case. The soft road to the World Series last year. Uh maybe they got to go Red Sox. They got to go Toronto. They got to beat their demons from the regular season to get there. Yeah, let’s do that. Why not? Why not? And if they don’t, I will look back at that month of DJ and Jazz and Vulpi and and Devin and be like, “Holy [ __ ] games matter, guys.” Yeah. Yeah. And you know, some of those more recent quotes of judge saying, “Let’s win every game and um you know, these games matter a little more and we’re watching the scoreboard and all of that.” Well, yeah, there could be an argument that you should have done a little more of that a little earlier, but hey, may maybe we’ll get into the the keep judge rolling theory and and maybe he goes nuts this posting like win the whole damn thing. That’s that’s the Yankee goal every year. Uh just going to be it’s crazy. It was 81 in the city today. It I started stripping sweat. Definitely doesn’t feel like turtleneck season. Uh so that part is weird, but uh yeah, in a couple in a couple hours we uh we are going to be playing do or die games against our lifelong rival 2018 2021 before that 2004 2003. Yeah, it’s been too hot dude. We can’t even go pumpkin picking because I’m like I’m not going to go sweat and pump and pick like you know you want to dress for the weather. forget the cute pictures. So, it was nuts. I was uh I was like way too hot in the subway. There was someone singing really loud and then I got out and it was all tourist and midtown that I was in like bumpy New York City Jake mode. Wow. Tuesday is going to be 80 in the Bronx and then Wednesday 70 and then Thursday 63. Look at that. The sprint to the postseason. Wow. Okay, let’s get into this series now that you have the vibe of the show laid out for you. Okay, I think it’s all brought to us by Segeek. Today’s episode is sponsored by Segeek. If you want to go see a game, it’s time to go. Uh, and Yankee fans only in the Bronx. Uh, and go use SeatGeek and go use code Yanks 10. 10% off your next pair of seats at SeatGeek. whether you’ve used a code or not before. So, what are you doing people? Yanks 10 at Segeek. SeatGeek, download the app. Uh it’s the number one rated ticketing app, so that’s pretty damn good. Uh and that’s code Yanks 10. 10% off your next set of tickets at SeatGeek. [Music] Final series of the year. Will Young Warren and the Yanks have what it takes to beat O’s a Trevor Rogers while keeping an eye on the Rogers center up north. Captain Crunch is judge homers, but he’s Eiffel Towered by a pair of Stantonian home runs. A beautiful day in the neighborhood as the Yanks score six off Mr. Rogers. But it’s 64 Yanks after Tyler O’Neal jacks one. Warren was Warren. One awful pitch. Five innings pitch, four earn runs. But the bullpen holds with some insurance runs from Wells and Stanton. It’s Warren to Lighter to Hill to Cruz to Dval to Bedar. Yanks win 84 final. This was a fun game because Rogers is a playoff pitcher. Yeah. and the White Socks last episode of like the Orioles were giving us scenarios. I don’t think they did after game one, but game one I mean Rogers trying to finish out a year that has been amazing. Yeah. Um Stan Judge McMahon all homer. Phenomenal Mighty Ducks tweet by me. What? McMahon’s the next game. This was Stanton Judge Stanton. You’re right. This was Stan Judge Stanton. So my tweet is the next game. Your tweet’s the next game. Stan crushed his homers. Yeah. I mean, you know, I I remember when Kaster originally started saying Gtoran uh to describe some of Jeter’s plays. Uh and everyone at the time was like, “What?” And then they were like, “That’s kind of cool.” Like the jump throw, him slapping the ball the other way. What makes him identifiable that Yeah. Stantonian, the ability to go the other ways, which with such ease, and then when he turns on a ball, again, this is a guy who’s hit a ball harder than anyone that’s ever played this game. Um, that that’s, you know, when the old heads start talking about, you know, how many all the all the old Yankee right-handed hitters used to have and Monument Park used to be on the field, that one was gone uh anywhere. So it and Stan had been in kind of a funk leading into this that again the weird if you just went box by box of things to check for a Yankees postseason run, the Stanton box doesn’t really need to be checked, but it was checked in a massive way. the uh it was a little slumpy lately, but I mean my dad was getting upset with his stance the the the home run they hit to take the lead. The Orioles, it comes out after Vulpi, he tried to barehand it. It was actually like I was feeling confident. I thought he was going to make a sweet play in front of McMahon’s face. Uh he couldn’t come up with it. I don’t know if you can fault him with that. It’s one of those things where I’d love to watch other shorts stops do it and see cuz I feel like there are some that make that play. It wasn’t McMahon, it was Rosario. Um, and then Warren threw the worst O2 pitch, one of the worst O2 pitches after a high fast ball. And obviously like he missed his spot. I think Warren would be like, “Yeah, dude. I didn’t want to throw it there. I’m not It wasn’t like a well, he executed it and bet he just it was a botched pitch, but it’s like a and they take the lead. And I think the theme of this series is that the lineup, the part of the lineup that is the lineup came through, I think every game. Like right after they took the lead 3-2, the Yankees took it back and it was a judge homer Stan and Stan homer like in immediately. I feel like that was all three games. Um same with today. that part of the lineup is just like we got it. Yeah. And I mean, like you said, Genton Rogers who had an amazing season. He’s gonna get that upped his erra to 181. Uh the guy’s going to get Sai Young votes with like half of a season of starts, which is insane that Yeah. And like this game still mattered. like this was uh you know trying hoping Toronto would slip up that if the Yankees don’t slip up maybe we find a way to win that division um that yeah seeing seeing Judge and Stanton do it little insurance late um and the bullpen man I mean lighter lighter and Cruz are in their own kind of category right now uh but Dval maybe his best outing Hill Bedar good boxes. Talking about bad uh two strike pitches, watch the home run judge’s home run pitch by Rogers. I don’t know if he executed that. I don’t know where he wanted this pitch. It is like a 91 mile per hour sinker. Dead red, no movement. Yeah, there’s almost a little I don’t want to say hesitation in Judge’s swing because that’s the wrong term, but it was almost like, is this pitch real? Oh, that. Okay, Homer. Done. absolute bullet. Uh, anything else from this game? Five RBI’s for G. Um, Will Warren just I mean overall okay strike seven out. Um, 33 starts, third Yankees rookie to achieve that. Yeah, the uh Hey, 100 162.1 innings. Um, it’s a rookie year to build off of. Um, so excited to see the next steps. Uh, cuz there should be next steps. I want to compare it to Clark Schmidt’s. Remember when Clark Schmidt’s rookie year he he he um went pole to pole? Um, kind of. I his first year as a starter. Yeah. Was it 22? So 22 he pitches in 29 games as mostly a reliever with some Okay. So 20 So 23 then So 23 uh 32 starts a 464 erra um 159 innings pitched. Oh wow. I thought that Will Warren’s year was going to be better when I compared him. I think Warren’s felt better. He just he has really had the one bad pitch or one bad inning that Yeah, that’s the difference between a lot of a good and a great starting pitcher in this league. But he I mean this game was the perfect example. They’re very similar. Whoa, dude. They’re like very similar. Um what numbers are you looking at? At first I pulled it up, but it was actually Bibs. I’ll send it to you. It was actually um Warren’s last year which was like one start or two starts or whatever. Uh oh my goodness. I just did sending it. But they have they both made 33 starts because I remember talking about Clark start that year being like hey man like that’s a great one to work on. And he did work up from there. Uh I mean 33 games each but 33 starts for Warren, 32 starts for Clark. 162 innings for Will Warren, 159 for Clark, 9-8 record for Will, 9-9 record for Clark, 4.44 RA for Will, 4.64 RA for Clark, 92 RA plus for Will, 93. The very, very similar. Yeah. And I mean, similar arm talent. I like similar stuff. Clark’s got more of the sharp breaking ball while Will’s got more of a sweep to it. And Yeah, man. I mean, going back to what was it spring training two years ago where we first we sat front row for a Will Warren start and it was like ah that’s it doesn’t feel like it’s there from from that point to where he’s at now that yeah it’s it’s not crazy to expect uh a Clark Schmidt type development which if that does happen I mean that’s Clark Schmidt the last two years when he’s been on the field has been incredible 30 starts a 307 RA and Yeah, Kaster uh Kester on Saturday’s broadcast, he uh he he had the nails out a little bit and he was he was just coming at all these narratives that he didn’t like. He’s like, you know, I’ve seen the narrative online, the Yankees can’t develop pitching. What about Clark Schmidt? What about Will Warren? What about Luis Hill? That that narrative isn’t around anymore. It’s they can’t develop hitters, right? But that was the narrative a while ago. But I feel like they’ve like the start of this season when Cole went down, I was like, I’m fine with this. The Yankees develop pitchers. Not fine with it. You know what I mean? I was like, I think they can overcome it. Um, that’s crazy how similar they are. Where Clark had to work on, he changed his pitch mix and he had to get like more outs without swinging miss. Will Warren, I feel like what he needs to work on is what Rodon worked on this year. just like oh not falling apart like not having brutal innings. Yeah. Yeah. I mean Clark’s Clark’s problems were getting out lefties and the third time through that it was like oh those those can be really tough ones and ones you can overcome. It didn’t none of that was glaring for Warren. Um but yeah, it was just the one inning and I I do think there were some times a good lefty stack got to him and also his games on the biggest stages. He got rocked which that’s tough. All right, game two. You want to talk about it? Let’s do game two then. Killer Cam Schlitler welcomes the birds to New York City. Pour some Suganu on me when you need some homers. The Judge, the G, and the glove as Aaron Stanton and McMahon go big fly. A pair of ribbies from the outfield as Judge and Cody belly up. Show me them sch slitties. Seven innings pitch, two hits, one walk, nine Ks, zero runs as he cementss himself in the Yankees playoff recipe. Get out there and twirl it, Blackburn. Yanks win 6-1 final. Now, this is the game Ryan McMahon did a Kenny Woo impression and joined the Bash Brothers and everyone was like, “Who? Woo woo woo. Kenny Woo.” Uh, he slugs a homer. First hit in a decade. Finally was under. What was that, Franca? Just a stat. The dugout went crazy. Yes. Slightly rude, but I like it. Sigano’s pants so high. High. But at least he’s not in a pajama outfit, right? Uh I think please. Is Schlitler more the story of this one? I think Schlitler is the story. I I don’t know if we’re going to be getting there later in the episode where we do we give out a pride, we give out an mfer and then we give out some regular old awards. Just that’s true. Little housekeeping for everyone. Um Schlitler’s I think the main story for how dominant he is. And again, if you do if you took out everything we know about not winning the division, like the box that Cam Schlitler checked in this game, uh is as good as you want. That uh I’m guessing there’s going to be more on him coming up. And yeah, I think I think Ryan McMahon I don’t I don’t know. I’m interested to see the evolution of him as a hitter next year. Uh but yeah, I I feel like Ryan McMahon is kind of the hitter we’ve seen with one or two games like this. He just hadn’t been having the one or two games like this. Uh so nice to see him. He’s got real power. Like I bet McMahon puts on a great batting practice. So I I think that was part of the Yankees elation. You move his barrel half inch up. He’s got a lot of homers. Yeah. And I think he I think all of his hits are on low pitches. So Red Sox scouting department. Don’t listen to this. Do not turn it off. I agree. Uh, is there anything else from this one? I mean, that inning was cool. Boon got ejected in a very weird sly. Ejected. Judge, I was going to make a breakdown. I don’t know if he’ll be able to make it because once postseason comes, the regular season feels like, right, who cares? And also, baby’s coming. Baby, but Judge kind of gave like a he put his hand out to be like boon like chill. Yeah. Um, and uh, Raone De Jesus, he’s got a quick temper. And the last time Boon talked to him, he told him that he stunk and you stink, too. Looked like looked like there might have been a carryover for Raone. Yeah, he’s a sassy one. Uh, but then Judge got the big RBI to make it go three nothing and then 6 nothing. And, uh, when he got the second base, he let out a let’s [ __ ] go, baby. like the the juices are flowing more for Judge than we saw all season cuz we saw it we noted it in the White Sox series when Ben Rice got the big hit and Judge celebrated at second turned to Rice and like said something’s like we hadn’t seen that the vigor of it. Yeah. And it’s it’s interesting because how much of that is tied to them wanting the division? Um like is is that that energy? Is it hey just we’re winning a ton of ball games and that feels good cuz man they are winning a ton of ball games um that yeah it’s you take out the whole Toronto side of this a lot of good boxes being checked lot of good boxes being checked yeah I mean McMahon readies his his postseason stand’s ready his postseason just need one I just got my first you know I started the episode pretty gloomy and People are mad at me about it probably, but I just I’m true to myself. That’s how I’m feeling. I just got my first note of like a positive like uh you know what are those things that they release when you run you you release endorphins. Yeah. Like a little positive fish just swung to the surface in my head and it was just thinking of Stan in the postseason. Hello little positive fish. Yeah. I was just like, oh, like I in my head I was like, stand in your head. It this little fish swam to the surface and was like, Stan’s going to go off and now said that or do you think it’s just communicating with you like telepathically? Or did it say it? The voice in my head said those words to me. Oh, Stan might [ __ ] go off. So, the fish told the voice or the voice in your head is a fish. It’s one or the other. I don’t think anyone will ever know. That’s tough. I don’t know who gives me my thoughts, but that’s what happened. Just swam up. Uh oh, wow. Stan homer 453rd of his career, moving him past Carl Yusky for 40th place all time. Yeah, I uh Stanton’s awesome, man. He um it it sure does look weird and I know that that umpire cam of Stanton is going to forever be with you and your fish in your head. Um okay, let’s go beat Boston, right? Yeah, that they have to have to. You got to beat Boston. They have to have to. If any of the Yankees analytics department has listened to this, no [ __ ] tricks. Okay, freed. I like that. Cruz to get out of the jam. Weaver, Devin, Bednar. If you got to skip one, you skip Devin. Yeah, if it’s Cruz to get out of the jam and then the eighth and ninth, it’s Weaver Bednar. Like, no gimmicks. Do not try to outsmart the other team, please. They’re They’re the better team. No [ __ ] It’s in New York, Jim. That’s different, dude. In that season, like, if this was the 2021, 2022, 2023 Yankees, fully expect Will Warren to come out of the game in the seventh inning in a tie game. Fully expect it. Yeah, they can’t do that [ __ ] now. Yeah, but in the 2021, 2022, 2023 Yankee era that they would have done that. Yeah. I wonder um I don’t even know what tricks they could have up their sleeve. I hope none. Cam Schlitler on short rest out of the pen. Like I don’t think so. I think the Yankees really like their recipe. I think they really like Freed and Rodon, which they should. I think they really like Schlitler, which they should. And yeah, man. I mean, go look at the past last year’s playoff box scores. I mean, it was pretty wild how much uh it was Clay Weave Hill. Um that it’s it’s why I was I texted and Con talked about it on the broadcast a little bit like once today was done like Toronto went up 10 uh and the Red Sox beat the Tigers that I I personally wouldn’t have pitched Bednar in the ninth today um the the way that the Yankees have showed they’re going to use their bullpen and how much we rely on Bedar. Um, but I don’t know. That’s again, but Con was talking about it. He’s like, “Yeah, some a lot of these conversations are had with the player and some guys just want the ball or want to work on something.” So, I don’t know, but I I I don’t think I would have used Bednar today. Yeah, I I don’t know what goes into it. So, I’m kind of fine with it, but I get what you’re saying as well. All right. Game three, today’s game. Game three, today’s game. [Music] The final game of the regular season. Identity crisis name Kyle Bradish. While the Yanks would hope for some heel from the Rays while Luis takes on Baltimore. Ricey has the Yankees feeling nicey. Big Ben clocks a pair of homers. Luis Hill gives the same start he seems to have every game. We will put them to bed now. Yanks win the final game of the season. Win eight in a row. We’re hyped for the playoffs. We love the playoffs. Yanks win 3-2 final. Ben Rice, very nice. Ben Rice, very nice. That would be Jack Curry’s, you know, newspaper headline. That would be uh The chat was like, “Ben Rice better get pride finally.” But I don’t think they looked at the numbers. Like I don’t They don’t look at the numbers. You go first. I mean, um, and he should. He deserves it, but other people are more deserving. I think he’s fourth on the list. What a series. But it was a great game for Ben Rice. Great game for Ben R. I dude again the He’s not going to start and that’s buming me out. Yeah. I I get it. Um crochet is a little bit of a different animal. Maybe they will, but I don’t think they will. Um and like the Yankees do believe in the dragon drop pinch hitter, and I believe in the dragon drop pinch hitter more than I have uh in this life or the next. And like we have a bench now that hey maybe maybe the the reward of this Yankees team actually having depth and a bench is Ben Rice comes in in the eighth inning against Greg Weissard and hits one in the upper deck. You know be nice. Second dick. Uh second deck. Yeah. I mean I was as soon as Toronto won I was bummed. I see that. Wanted the vision real bad. Your hat looks bummed. Sometimes my hat just goes into a style that I don’t I don’t realize it’s at happens often. Uh I mean, this is a good game. Uh it was a good game for Ben Rice. Um and getting called out on the bases was one too many for me. Yeah. And that was um that was tough because he got back but he got back to foot. Yeah, but that’s Yeah, I guess so. Go ahead. Go hands first. He did. He was oven. Oh, yeah. Got a reachound. I don’t know. Yeah, I don’t know. And I thought that was supposed to be out of the rules of baseball. I mean, it’s a good baseball play by Gunner because you get an out of it, but um Yeah. Yeah. Cabierro has been has been loose on the bases recently. That’s his role. I hope he’s finding his limits. You know, that’s what I’m hoping. Yeah, he’s going to be on the bench, huh? Yeah. Yeah, Vulpi’s looked bad again. But but yeah, Cabier is going to be on the bench, I guess. Unless Jazz is hurt. Like actually hurt. He pinch hit, so I guess not. Yeah, he pinch hit and it it looked like And we saw Jazz do this. What series was it coming out of that he just left the game and then what? He hurt both knees. Both knees. Both knees. It was kind of that again like Jazz got he fell on Gunner and then he got hit by the pitch that Jazz was just like I and I think rightfully so was just like nope too close to October. I’m I’m good on this game. Put in Caviar. Oh, what was that noise? Just like Ben Rice has been so good. I don’t think he’s going to get the start against Crochet. Wells has hit crochet well and you can’t not start Rice. Wells has to start behind the dish because the Red Sox will ruin the if they get on base it’s over. And Goldie’s there to start against lefties. Oh, the only thing I could say is you start Rice and then you have Goldie for defense at the end of the game. Like that’s how you could spin it. I’d love Rice to start. Yeah. I don’t. Crochet’s got pretty big lefty righty splits. It’s why Paulie G’s on the team. Um I think he’s going to be drag and drop, but that’s that’s tomorrow’s episode. Well, I’m trying to bring positivity tomorrow. So, I’m getting all my negative thoughts out now. We’re getting out DJ has the most I think I think I think all the hits that the Yankees got against guys like not on the team anymore. I think DJ had a bunch. I mean, we haven’t beat him. Started against the Yankees four times. They’ve they’ve yet to win a Crochet game. It’s the worst [ __ ] matchup for the Wildard. Yeah, the first the first time they saw him, they got five earned runs off of them. The Yankees just gave up 10. Um so that’s a problem. Um last start, they got two homers. What happened there? Uh Wellsie homered off him a bunch I feel like. Oh, Judge has homered off him twice. That’s great. Judge got him last game and Ahmed Rosario. Yes, Rosario had uh uh Fenway uh it hit the lip of the monster which is awesome. Is he starting? I don’t know. I was looking at I was trying That’s what I was going through. I was going through the lineups of who started against him and I’m like, dude, our Yankees fans are [ __ ] hot to trot right now, but is it going to be [ __ ] Slater, Rosario, Goldie lineup? Like the last time they faced him, it was Slater, Judge, Belly, Stanton, Rosario, Goldie, Jazz. Yeah, I don’t know. I think I don’t know. I don’t know, Jim. I don’t know. I don’t know either. It’s really weird, right? It’s a little weird. I And I doubt they know right now if we’re being honest. Like not starting Trent. I don’t think they’re going to do that. But then do you have Trent on the Yeah, I don’t know. I haven’t gotten there yet. I It’s tough. It’s tough. You have to start Trent, right? It’s It’s one of the But I don’t think he started against him. Yeah. I don’t know. I mean, hey, I think what we found out is the Yankees the Yankees round table that gets to vote on decisions and the pitching decisions don’t need to be voted on, but they’re now that they have depth. I don’t know. They they went out and they went out and got these lefty hitters, lefty mashers. Like if it broke that bellies and has has Rosario played left for us. Slater hasn’t won me over in the nicest way to to be honest. Defensively, Belly has to be in left, Tren has to be in center, and Judge has to be in right. But that’s where this is me. They haven’t done that against lefties. But you have to have Bellinger in left field at Yankee Stadium. You got homefield advantage. You got to use it by having a lefty that left fielder that plays it really well out there. And I mean, you just slide Trent down in the lineup. And hopefully that’s a perk later in the game. That would be nice. Judges numbers against him are pretty [ __ ] funny this year. like all homers and strikeouts. He’s got 13 played appearances, 10 strikeouts, two hits, two homers, you’re right. Oh, uh, the Yankees have the six o’clock start in Yes. Yes. Yes. both both games where that’s the option. Just that’s official now. It’s official. Ahmed Rosario three for six off crochet this year. Can’t start him at third. I think they’re I think they might do that and then have McMahon as the defensive replacement. You got Max Freed on the mound. Then you can’t do it. You can’t start him then. You can’t start him. That’s why this is such a [ __ ] matchup, dude. doesn’t play into anything the Yankees have built for them to do. I wonder, do they sit jazz? No way. Right. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know either. All right. All right. Awards. That was game three. Awards. Pride of the Yankees is brought to you by DraftKings. Use code JM baseball when you sign up with the DraftKings sports book. Pride of the Yankees. Pride of the Yankees. Pride of the Is it Is it little old me? Yes, you little guy. Oh, now I’m just I’m just returning what you threw my way. You said is it little old me? I did say that. Um, my pride of the Yankees. The the last series, who made me proud? The crowd wants Ben Rice. Get out of here, crowd. Um, shoot. I’m between like three guys. Only happened once. Um, I’ll I’ll go Stanton. I’ll go J Carlos Stanton. Um because he went five for 10 with three home runs, seven RBI, two walks. Um our player we most believe in in the postseason. Uh who sneakily it’s kind of been covered by this whole Aaron Judge season he’s having. Stanton had an amazing season. Like I know he missed that first chunk of the season, so that’s the other reason it hasn’t been discussed that way, but 76 games, 24 home runs. Like Stan himself for 162 was on a 50 homer pace. Um, and like everything’s there. Like last year the on base and contact kind of went away. 272 348 a 598 slug. Um, like we mentioned, he was he was slumping a little bit coming into this series that if he didn’t have a good series this series, we would have had to have a discussion about, hey, you know, G’s in a little bit of a funk right now or we we’re not worried about that, right? Because he’s so good in the postseason. Um, yeah, he had a eight for 48 going um at one point that now three home runs. Uh, he’s the last person the other team wants to see at the plate. Um, I’m excit I’m excited for a Stant in October. That’s what was the Fish told me. Excuse me. You’re excused. Thank you. Great award, Jake. Thank you, James. Where you? I will be. Um, I’m just I’m happy you left him for me. Uh uh I’m gonna give my part of the Yankees to uh a guy named Aaron Judge. Okay. He had a 364 batting average in the series. He had a 417 on base percentage. I want you guys to listen closely. Where did he go today? So I need an answer before you listen closely. One for four. Uh today Aaron Judge went one for four. 33. And he got robbed. He did get robbed. 33 divided by 86. Okay. Okay. Now, where’s my other tab? Found it. Now, in the last 26 games of the season, Aaron Judge had a 383 batting average, 540 on base percentage, and an 829 slugging. He is the only player to hit 50 home runs and win the batting title. which I truly think historians of the game, right, baseball writers of the game, that means so much more than anything else. I think he’s going to win MVP. I’d vote for him. Cal is deserving. Um kind of the more I like have this debate, the more I’m like, well, I don’t know. Cal’s not even like top anything and anything besides home runs, right? Judge whip percentage is down. His chase percentage is down. He’s not a strikeout hitter. Imagine if Luis Arise hit 50 home runs just because it happened in reverse order like the home run hitter won the batting title. Mhm. I think people’s brains are like, “Nah, well, you know, the home runs are more fun, so whatever.” But if Luis Arise hits 340 and then all of a sudden now he hits 50 bombs, people would be going out of their [ __ ] mind, right? Well, that’s was that’s what we’re seeing, the 50 home runs and a batting title. And he came through in this series in big moments, like I was saying earlier, like bounceback innings, crushing innings. He was in the mix. The guys around him in the lineup all um were part of it did well. You see him get a little more excited. So I am uh no one deserves to win the the final pride more than Judge in my opinion. I I agree with you. I agree with me. Um where the numbers have landed like you just discussed, it’s crazy. And yet it’s what he’s done now for two seasons. Um you know, even the year he broke the AL home run record, um like you you can you can lump that in. He hit 311 that season, he hit three he hit 322 last year. So it that part of it isn’t even that much of a jump. Uh it it was more a competition thing where Jacob Wilson for the the A’s fell off this year, but he’s generational. He’s all time. He’s historic. Um and it is it is cool seeing the uh you know Jason Stark came out and was like it’s Aaron Judge. I can’t I can’t think of not voting for him. Um uh the only people I’m seeing is MLB Network for what? Cal. Gotcha. Everyone else that like I’ve seen say it on a show or Mike or a beat reporters players is like it’s Judge. Yeah. Yeah. I’m trying to see what are the DraftKings MVP odds because I know they tilted to Cal at one point. I’m wondering if they tilted back. Um I don’t think you can bet on it in New York, so I can’t find it. But um yeah, I mean that’s nor that’s where I start because that’s that’s real money and they don’t they don’t mess around with it. Well, they don’t know what the voters are going to do. No, but I mean it’s it’s Vegas. um what were the what were the numbers I was I sent yesterday to you guys about his about judges cuz uh we were being petty and I don’t really need to bring this but looking at some cow at bats and stuff he left the zone and struck out and it that’s what Judge used to do you know he struck he broke the record or when he was a rookie and it made me realize wow dude like judge doesn’t have ugly at bats I don’t really remember him having too ugly at bats, maybe when he came back from injury. So, I went to look at his contact or like his um his play discipline numbers. Uh and he’s he’s 6% below average in chase rate, which usually if you’re hitting home runs, you’re you’re swinging, right? Like it’s pretty pretty wild. special man. Unbelievable. Have a big postseason, dog. Do it. Oh, yeah. And then this was the other thing. I’ve seen some people be like, “The switch hit Cal’s a switch hitter.” Well, Judge is better verse both pitchers, so like who cares, right? That means nothing in the debate. Judge Judge’s best judge’s worst split verse lefty verse righty verse lefty reliever verse righty reliever is his worst is better than Cal’s best. So if you’re throwing switch hitter into the argument that doesn’t work it would only work if Judge was weak against one side. Right. Judge is better against both sides. So that doesn’t in this debate between the two. It doesn’t hold any water. Yeah. I I think the only debate is being a catcher, which there’s some unquantifiable stuff there. And that is that I fully agree with. Like I mean I I totally um catchers have a much harder job. So I agree with like it’s a special season and it is worthy of winning most valuable player because of the catching stuff. Even though the slashline stuff isn’t high, it’s home runs and catching. But I I think that is MVP worthy. mfers. I think mfers, man. You Yankee [ __ ] Um, who’s my mfer? Yankees won every game. Yeah, Brad got the win in game two for me. And the theme of this season, I feel like it’s got to be one man. Blanch. Brad. I think it’s Brad the Blanch. That’s fitting. It’s fitting. Where are you going? I got to double up with you. Okay. Also fitting if the Mariners and the Yankees play each other in the CS and then you have the two MVP guys going against each other. That’s storyline stuff. make it happen. You know, MLB’s been in the script writing game a little more recently. Show Judge last year, New York, LA. Why not? Let’s put them. Let’s do it. Sodto to the Mets and then they don’t make the postseason. Did you see that? Yeah. Like a big torn big collapse. It’s the first time I’m not um first time I was genuinely happy the Mets collapsed. Not like meme happy, right? Like first like because they were so obnoxious about Sodto the fan base, right? Um and I know Yankees fans are so obnoxious. I try not to be unless we’re doing like heavy irony on the show and being silly, but like if I talk to a Mets fan, like you know, I I baseball’s more fun when both teams are in the postseason. Like last year was so much fun. So I usually I always want them to be, but it was just so obnoxious last last off season and I I really wanted Soda to sign. So I I was like in a I was being petty, but um yeah, it’s the first time I felt like vigor that most like some Yankee fans feel or Mets fans feel. I was like, “Fuck [ __ ] yeah.” you know, they uh Yeah, but I like Mendy. I I like a lot of the I like a lot of the Mets, so now they can be good. Oh, okay. This is their their one-year penalty for taking Sodto. Yeah. Okay. And thinking it was that easy. Like cuz they were using it to discredit what the Yankees did last year. That’s where I got annoyed. Okay. like the Yankees making the World Series, having a good season, Judge um benefited from Sodto, like before the season started, all that was so loud and I was like, “No, guy.” Like, it’s not that it’s not like you just plug Sodto and you’re in the World Series, right? You discrediting so much other stuff. So, that’s where I like that we had a little bit of like a balancing. Okay. See, and then now, okay, build because I like when you’re good and the Yankees are good and New York is a baseball town. Like, that’s my favorite thing. uh is the Yankees are good and they’re New York is a baseball town, but I do think they need a little like chill. Okay, they got not that easy. They’re one-year penalty. One-year penalty. And congrats to Klay Holm pull to pull as a starter. I think he’s got the 10th best RA in the NL. So happy for him. Go Clay go. They steal weave. Try to do that again. Eat [ __ ] Yeah. worried about that. Not going to work. Matt, sign Devin, why don’t you guys go get Square? [Laughter] [Music] You go first, big dog. I am going to give out. The press record button. Press record button. This was tough. I’m sorry. I mean, it’s kind of story of the year. Story of the year. But we got to keep it going through the year. Just nothing. Press record. Um, no [ __ ] clue. Just going to look at a name and say it. Bellinger. BBD. Cam. It’s Cam Schlitler. So, okay. I I feel better about that. Uh, you got to record. Why is it press record for cam? Uh, cam short for camera. Do I have that? Yeah. And wow. It’s uh it’s it’s time or maybe it’ll be time because Jim, I know we’re we’re still processing everything. Good things are going to happen in in the next couple days. I I believe that. Um, if the Yankees go to a game three, Cam Schlitler is on the mound. If the Yankees go to a game one in Toronto, Cam Schlitler might be on the mound. I hope we get Well, game three is a little scary, but either way, uh, what Cam has done is amazing, James. uh with that final start and that final inning going through the seventh, it brought his erra back into the twos. A 296 erra for Cam Schlitler. Um I know the the Orioles season’s over and they’re hitting and a lot of young guys in their lineup. That’s none of my business. Uh my business is the nine strikeouts, only one walk. Um man, he threw a couple. I know cutters have been a popular topic on this show and the yes broadcast. He threw a couple demon cutters like 95 and ran in on a lefty. I’m going to predict um if and when he pitches this postseason, I think a lefty is going to swing at a cutter and it’s going to hit them. Um so that’s just my first premonition of the postseason. Uh Cam was dominant. It’s checking the box as good as you can before heading into October. I am uh very interested. Have they said the playoff order? Um I don’t think so. If they lose, if they win game one, I think Cam pitches game two. Short rest. Well, it wouldn’t be short rest, right? It be normal rest. He’s on extra rest now. I think he’s lined up for game three to be normal, but the other guys are on a day extra. Will Warren got the the Friday start. Let’s see. Other guys beat Freed Rodon. They have extra. No, he’d be on he’d be on extra rest for uh he got Saturday start. So, one, two, three. He’d be on normal rest for game day game three. That’s scary as [ __ ] They’re going freed Rodon. They better win the first two games. Um, that horrifies me. I like Schlitler and G first playoff season first playoff game. We’ve seen We’ve seen it do weird things to guys. Yes. And then they need to fix it and get over it. Uh, you know, you saw Rodon, it wasn’t I don’t know it was it wasn’t his first, but it was bizarre verse the Royals. We saw Severino who was way better than Schlitler in 2017 and way more like poised and bulldog and you thought the perfect recipe for a postseason pitcher and he’s never been that in the postseason. He’s always turns into like a adrenaline so I can’t throw strikes like he’s he overcome the game one. But hopefully Schlitler can control himself. I think, you know, that scenario for him in game three against his childhood team at Yankee Stadium is scary as [ __ ] Turn the cameras on. He’s been great. He’s been great. And yeah, I guess the the counter to that, and I mean, I agree with with pretty much all of that. It’s Sevy is so emotional. Cam kind of prides himself on not being emotional, which that’s kind of what you want. Yeah, Savvy was real good. He would jump his adrenaline at the end of starts, right? The roar. Um, yeah. I hope he’s not a game three. I’d much rather him pitch game one. Yeah. Although the Blue Jays are the team that had the tip on him when he was tipping his pitches. Um, I forget. And lit and lit him up. I think that was him. You ever get lit up? I don’t have that. Well, who was he was tipping his pitchers against the team? He He didn’t make it out of He made got two outs. I know. Yeah. Yeah. One point. Two. Well, he struck out the first two batters and then they to They saw the They saw the tail cuz he said in his post game like, “Oh, I was taking my pictures.” Um I’m excited. It’s nice to have a flamethrower. We’ve been wanting that. Yeah. I just wish I hope they win the first two and he gets a breezy like first game with a with a fiveame comfort breezy game one alds that’s better than elimination versus the Red Sox is team he grew up rooting for but you got to get the script Jimbo when he shoves in that game it’s Schlitty City that’d be awesome O’Neal asked on the broadcast asked Con like is it hard to get the pitches low in the zone like he works high and that’s been a question we’ve been asking since he started and uh Con kind of said, “Yeah, you just got to like really trust yourself to hold on to the ball later. Uh stay tight.” I didn’t know if Con was going to say, “Well, I think that’s where he likes working his pitches.” Because I don’t know either. Like is he is he always high in the zone because that’s where he wants him to be or because other games he has found the fast ball low and it’s nasty like freezing guys at the knees. Yeah, it’s I it’s where pitching meets strategy, strategy meets ability that I I I currently don’t know the answer. Coney did allude to it as it’s it is a skill that um you know he said Kevin Gossman’s really good at it and uh you know for Gossman that’s that’s a lot more necessary because his wipeout pitch is a splitter that the splitter plays off that like when people start sitting splitter he throws that low fast ball and gets a lot of strikeouts looking um that yeah I don’t I don’t know what it is for Cam I Me neither. My first award is uh shaky. Shaky. Yeah. Um Vulpy. No, Sharky. Um dude, I’m so interested in what he can do in the postseason. He didn’t look good in this series. He got the job done, but he gave the face off the mound again. His last out was a ball in play and he was like, “Okay, that’ll do.” He gets helped here in game three because they go home on the little number and he he feels a nice play by him. Uh no strikeouts in this series for him. Uh none today and I don’t think he had one the other game either. Yeah, he’s supposed to be like a I strike you out pitcher. Yeah. So, he’s going to have an interesting postseason. He finds it and they [ __ ] go to him every game to finish the inning. The starting pitcher goes out there, gives up a single, an out, then gives up a single, they need two outs, they go to Sharky. Like, he’s the fireman. Come strike guys out. Or he might he might go to an island, right? It’s going to be like early games. Is the splitter diving and do we have trust is a little bit of a secret wild card like uh an X factor potential or potential not around factor. You know what I mean? Yeah. And I’m I’m very interested to see that play out. I’m rooting for him because I love the guy and I love the pitch when it’s on, but it’s been more sharky. It’s been more shaky than sharky lately. Yeah. I wonder what the Yankees are actually thinking. like they should be seeing this, right? Because he he hasn’t looked like that same guy. Um they see it. I mean, all the quotes they had about Heel, right, and the results not matching the metrics and all that. Like, so they know underlying numbers. So, and it’s very easy to his underlying numbers aren’t even underlying really. Well, yeah. I mean, with Heel, you know, when they they did a side byside today from last year’s stats and you’re like, “Oh, yeah.” Like opponent batting average is up a lot. Like he’s a different guy. I wonder if they bank on Fernando Cruz’s season or what it’s looked like recently cuz recently it hasn’t been the same. No. Like remember when he embarrassed Bobby Wit? Yeah. like that guy, you know, Cruz was on god mode for a little bit there. That that hasn’t been there. Um it feels like he’s surviving every outing. Um in his last uh he pitched one inning today. Uh yes. Yes. Yes. So, in his last 5.1 innings, uh, 21 batters faced or 22 batters faced if he faced three today. He’s gotten two strikeouts. Pretty wild. And no earned runs though. No earned runs. But if I find a stretch from early in the year, the strikeout numbers would like shock you, I think. Yeah. I mean, if you look at his game log, there’s a lot of twos and threes. Um, yeah, the the Yankees have to acknowledge that. I wonder Yeah, I I love him for one batter. Yeah. Sixth inning, runner on first and second. Bregman comes in, Freed’s done. Two outs, throw, four splitters. Maybe the adrenaline of the postseason gets the little dart dart and dive back in the split cuz I mean, man, the way that man is going to adrenaline dump is maybe something we’ve never seen before. Yeah, that’s true. It’s you. Oh, boy. Good lord. Thank you for the award. Um, where do you where do you go, my darling? Hit that top of the wall award. Rosario McMahon. Uh, he he hit the top of the wall in this series. Yeah, we were talking about Rosario doing it against Crochet. Rosario wasn’t getting an award. Um I’ve I’ve oozed an odd not a phrase about how much I love the way that man plays defense. Um he had a play where he went back on a ball today for a second that they almost turned a double play, but I think Gunner was running and he can really fly. Just watching McMahon and Jazz turn that play or attempt that play was a reminder of what our third base and second base situation looked like that we’re going to move past tomorrow. Um the Gumby arm movement, he had a nice offensive game. If he has one of those in the postseason, the guy will become beloved really quickly. His pressers are really good. Um, it’s all there except it feels like there’s a hole in his bat sometimes that it’s like just bring bring that swing up three inches. Um, and hey, if he hits the top of the wall in this Boston series, like he is going to be he is like part of the fabric of this team going forward that uh I hope we get to harp on that. Um, because God the defense is so good. James really good gamechanging especially Max Freed allows the most hits to third base. So Freed has to start. Freedom has McMahon has to start. Yeah. So you have Rosario and you have Goldie there to hit lefties, but now because of the way other things were saying you can’t start him. Well, freed Fred and McMahon, it didn’t matter who we were playing, Freed and McMahon were going to be paired up. That’s what I’m saying. Yeah. So the Red Sox aren’t a factor in that. No, but it he matches up with a lefty. Freed matches up with a lefty. If Freed matched up with a righty, it it’d be good. I’m just saying because of other circumstances that rank higher, right? The guy you got who has three for six off of Crochet this year, hit a homer last outing, isn’t starting because he can’t. Maybe he’s in left field, which it gets even more scary. No way. Yeah. Don’t try to outsmart anyone. Yankees, I know you’re listening. That’s what they like to do. No pinch hitting forward for the walk. No Clark Schmidt first out of the bullpen with guys on and then bring them back out after he dumps his adrenaline. Though Davey and H just because it’s a division rival, don’t get cute. They’re going to I hope they don’t, dude. It feels like they might not because they have changed a little bit, but I’m nervous about it. I think if they do anything, I think it would be sit Trent. Yeah, it stinks. It’s crazy. If if they’re sitting Trent, then you’re putting belly in center and like putting Rosario on left. Yeah, I think if they do something they might do that. They might just not and say we’re we’re the better team because I think they are. I hope they do that. Does Max Freed give up fly balls to left field? What if I pull this up and it says all year? He has not. All year he’s never given him up. Not Not one. Then it’d be more in play for me. Okay. Well, let’s see. Pulling the data. Fetching the data. Getting results. He’s giving up some balls. Yeah, they’re out there. His outfield mix is there’s no clumps. It’s just everywhere when he gives up fly balls and line drives. Okay. Clumpless. Yeah. Now ground balls should be all third base. It’s Rosario hasn’t played left with the Yankees. He’s It’s going to be belly and left. It’s going to be Trenton center. Goldie at first. Rice on the bench. That’s what I think. Yeah. Freed. Hey, you got a good lefty option on the bench and you got a good righty options on the bench. Who are the Red Sox relievers? And this is stuff we’ll do next episode. Yeah, this isn’t even happening this episode. Yeah. Um, is this episode over? Where are we? I think you have one more award. Uh, I will give my award to a guy. Um, I’m giving the Stay the course award. Stay the course award. Uh, that goes to it’s a famous quote from the movie The Patriot. Okay. Patriot. Watched that a few times. Good movie. Uh, Luke Weaver. Your victories and your losses are shared by more than you know. Stay with us. Stay the course. Luke Weaver. No, it goes to Jazz and um stay 70 like playoffs Yankee Stadium, but you have been electric with a smooth swing. Yeah. Going like if Jazz comes up with a runner on second, Jake, and he punches one the left, I know a homer’s coming later. If he big swing, misses, strikes out with some big swings or, you know, even like hits a sky-high pop out to right field, I’d be like, “Oh, come on, Jazz.” Like, stay within it. Stay within yourself. This has been a great season. Is he going to win the Silver Slugger at second base? B chat chat BBD. There’s some interesting stuff because he’s played limited games. Second base, he should be good cuz silver slugger, it feels like there’s no rules for positions. He might get third somehow. Uh, gold glove. I know he he finished ineligible for the second base gold glove, which is hilarious. But that’s fine because did he say he was gonna win a gold glove or did he say he was gonna win? He said he was gonna win a silver slugger. I know. I know for a fact he said he was going to win silver slugger. I feel like he said gold glove, but that I don’t know definitively. Well, stay the course. Be a hero by not being a hero. M like, you know, yeah, he had a bad postseason last year, right? I believe so. Let’s see. Uh, career 66 at bats, 167 236, 288 slug, 524 ops. Not good. Not good. Playing third base. Playing third base. Crazy. Yanks are good. Go win. Go win. Just do it. Oh, they got Chappie in the pen. They got Chappie. They got lefties in the pen. Yep. Interesting. And they’ve they’ve called up a couple youngans that Corora will probably empower to be in big spots. You got to go right, left, right, left. You got to surround Judge and Stanton with lefties. Give me a at bat Judge or Stanton against Justin Wilson in the seventh inning. Yeah, feed that to me. I like that. All right. Well, that’s this episode. Tomorrow we’ll be recording the the official the official wild card preview and then um tune in. We’ll be streaming. I won’t be there, but Jake and Joe’s will be streaming game one of the wild card. All right. Love you. Go Yanks. Tell them Grams. Go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees. Let’s go Yankees.

  1. This is why I hate when people say the games in may and June don’t matter but every year most people’s season come down to a few wins or losses

  2. They DO NOT have the best record in the AL they are TIED for the best record with the blue Jays and the Jays won the season series so NO the Yankees DO NOT have the best record in the AL!

  3. I think that it has gone too unnoticed that our two big power guys this season learned how to hit for singles and such when needed!!! We need contact hitters and big G and big J have both gotten better at getting hits.

  4. It sucked that the Yankees didn't pull off the division! But it has been quite a ride! What a fun baseball season! Came down to the very last day for so many teams! Now let's go take care of Boston! It's back to 0-0 now! Anything that happened during the regular season means nothing!

  5. This is set up perfectly for yankees to end all their demons and get world title number 28, first beat red sox, second beat mariners and show who the real mvp is (judge), third beat blue jays, fourth if they make it back in a story book ending beat the dodgers then we come back with an even stronger and healthier rotation next year spencer jones developing along with other prospects if we get it done this year it could take us into another dominant stretch of yankees baseball

  6. As a Canadian Yankees fan, Who's father grew up in New Rochelle, New York, who also was diagnosed with some very tough health matters in January-

I am so pumped for a potential Yankees -Jays Division Series.

My Father and I have been waiting for this for a loong time and oh my God it's almost here

  7. You played 2 weeks of ball vs sub 500 teams. The last time they played a 500 team was Boston. They should be playing "this well". The fact is they have issues vs 500 teams.
