Steelers Get TERRIBLE NEWS On Jalen Ramsey & Calvin Austin III Injuries – Time To TRADE For A WR?
[Music] Welcome into Steelers Talk. I’m your host, Jack Sperry. Today we got some terrible injury news for the Pittsburgh Steelers as Jaylen Ramsay and Calvin Austin III are expected to miss quote unquote several games with injuries suffered in yesterday’s win versus the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin. Um, if you guys want to wish Jaylen and Calvin speedy recoveries, you guys want to send some positive energy in their way here, click that thumbs up icon, uh, like today’s video to wish five and 19 full and speedy recoveries. Hopefully, they can get back to the starting lineup here soon. The report came in last night from Jerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that the Steelers can use the buy. Cornerback Jaylen Ramsey with a hamstring and wide receiver Calvin Austin the third with a shoulder are expected to miss at least several games. Ramsay tried to return versus Vikings, but it didn’t work out. So, obviously, this is not good news if you are a Pittsburgh Steelers fan this morning. But my question when it comes to these injuries is how much exactly is quote unquote several games? All right. Are we talking about like two or three games? Are we talking four to six? Are we talking more than that? Um, you know, this is certainly, I think, an intentionally ambiguous term that Jerry used in his report because it’s not exactly known just yet exactly how long these two are going to be out. And uh, it’ll be interesting to see what answers we get this week or potentially even next week. Remember, Mike Tomlin doesn’t speak to the media this week as the Steelers are on by. So, we might not get uh, crystal clear answers as to just how severe these injuries are for a little bit. I’m sure we’ll get some word this week from Adam Shfter or Ian Rapaort or even Jerry Dulac again about uh exactly how much time we’re expecting uh these guys to miss. But it certainly is a concern because these two guys play pretty significant roles uh on either side of the football for the Pittsburgh Steelers. And it’s it’s possible that the Steelers might have to make a move at one or both of these spots to make up for that. We’ll start with the nickel position because I think wide receivers a more interesting discussion. I want to save that for later in the show. But I don’t think the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to make a move at Nickel. I think they like their in-house solutions at Nickel right now. Brandon Eckles uh suffered some cramps yesterday. He’s going to be perfectly fine. Um he can play on the inside as well. Played there a lot during the preseason and during training camp. Jaylen Ramsey got a lot of rest uh during uh training camp this year. Eckles did a really good job in the slot. So, I think the Steelers feel very comfortable with placing Eckles in the slot. Eckles has played a lot of football for this team to start this season with Joey Porter Jr. uh out with that hamstring injury with Joey Porter Jr. expected to be back when this team gets back from buy in week six. Of course, you have Darius Slay. You have your two outside corners situ situated. So, now with Jaylen Ramsay probably going to be missing a few games. You can probably plug and play Brandon Eckles, but then also they like the backup option to the backup and that’s Beanie Bishop Jr. who has played games for this team as a starting nickel before they traded for Ramsay. Bishop was expected to be the starting nickel for this team this year. Um so to still have him on the practice squad, somebody that can be easily elevated from the practice squad is certainly a luxury to have. And then they drafted Dante Kent who this team really likes as well. So there’s just not a whole lot of options on the free agency market um that I think the Steelers would prefer over these three gentlemen right here to replace Ramsay in the short term. And if they make any move for a defensive back, guys, keep your eye on CJ Gardner Johnson. All right, because CJ is, you know, by trade a safety, but you know, he’s kind of that big nickel type of player that can play in the slot. He can play safety. Kind of that same big nickel role that the Steelers have been playing Jaylen Ramsay in. So if this role is really that important for Mike Tomlin, Terrell Austin and this Steelers defense this year and they feel like Brandon Eckles, you know, it doesn’t bring the level of size or physicality to this position that they want. CJ Gardner Johnson could be a possibility. Now, if Jaylen’s only going to miss a few weeks, then there’s the awkward conversation of, okay, well, when Jaylen comes back, where is CJ playing? Uh, and I think that that might be a reason why this might get hung up and why I don’t think it’s probably going to happen at the end of the day. Um, but you know, I think that it is something to keep your eye on if the Steelers want to replace Jaylen Ramsay’s role as the big nickel in this defense. So, pick your nickel corner for me down there in the comments section. For me, guys, I think Brandon Eckles is probably going to hold down the fort until Ramsay gets back. But, let me know your pick. Type be for Brandon Eckles, BB for Beanie Bishop Jr., DK for Dante Kent, CJ for CJ Gardner Johnson, or if you think someone else should be the starting slot corner for this team moving forward while Ramsay gets better, type who you think it should be down there in the comment section. This will be the pin comment on today’s show. So, YouTube’s going to throw you an ad break here in just a few seconds. When that happens, take advantage of that time by letting me know who you want to start for the Steelers at Nickel while Jaylen Ramsey is out. Now, talking about wide receiver here, guys, I think uh look out for a move at wide receiver this week. All right, Calvin Austin the third was a very big part of this offense. The Steelers really only played two receivers on a regular basis and Calvin was one of their bonafide starters. I’ll talk about some of the reasons why I think the Steelers are going to be making a move at wide receiver here very soon in just a moment. A big thank you to Omaha Stakes for sponsoring today’s edition of Steelers Talk. So, I think that now might be the time for Omar Khan to make his move at wide receiver. We’ve been talking about the possibility of the Steelers maybe going to more three wide receiver sets, more spread stuff. Um, and you know, even when Calvin Austin the third gets back, you know, it might be nice before the deadline to be able to bring in another receiver that you trust in this offense because unfortunately I I really do wish that Roman Wilson was at a point where you could say, “Yeah, we have full confidence in Roman Wilson to step in for Calvin in this role in the offense.” But right now, I just don’t think the Steelers do. I mean, once Calvin got injured, who came in and took his snaps? It wasn’t Roman Wilson. Roman only had three total snaps last week or yesterday versus the Minnesota Vikings. All right. Uh it was Scotty Miller that was coming in and taking the wide re wide receiver two snaps. And if Calvin is going to be missing quote unquote several weeks, like if he’s going to be missing like three, four games here with that shoulder injury, do they really trust Roman Wilson or any of these other three wide receivers that are currently options for them as wide receiver, too? like Scotty Miller had a good preseason, but are you really trusting him to be your number two receiver right now and completely replace Calvin Austin the third’s production? I I just don’t guys. And then Ben Scoranic, Isaiah Hajins. Um, you know, Hajins is an interesting one because he’s a he’s a little bit of a route runner. He’s got good hands. You know, I’m interested in the Isaiah Hajins option. Um, but I just feel like, you know, you’re really banking a lot on somebody uh that was a free agent two weeks into the NFL season uh to really pick up the slack for somebody that was your best one-on-one separator in Calvin Austin III. So, some options that are available at the wide receiver position on the free agency market. Deontay Johnson, Odell Beckham Jr., Nelson Agler has been a decent wide receiver for option for many years. DJ Ch and then Robert Woods is an option that has some experience with this team. Uh but really the two names that stick out to me in that group guys are Deontay Johnson and Od Odell Beckham Jr. Uh but the question with DJ is would this team really consider bringing him back? Do they really have the situation devolve to a point where they wouldn’t even consider this? I mean Deontay, you know, is the type of profile a wide receiver that they could use right now. A one-on-one separator that can play on the outside. um you know, he’s familiar with the organization, all those different things. He’d have to learn Arthur Smith’s offense. Um and there’s a reason why they traded him away after they hired Art is because he’s not much of a run blocker, but like Calvin Austin the third’s not much of a run blocker, right? So, um you know, do they really feel like, you know, that’s what the premium is there for the wide receiver two position? I would at least consider it if I at least as long as that relationship with DJ hasn’t been completely tarnished because you don’t have to give up any draft capital to get him. He is a good route runner. He does have familiarity with the with the with the organization if not the offense. Um and you know just last year with Carolina before he went on this kind of stretch of poor play with other organizations, uh he was putting up some pretty good numbers, man. like legit number two uh wide receiver production. He was on track for over 800 yards if Carolina would have kept him. Um so definitely something to keep your eye on. And then also Odell Beckham Jr. I think is another name that we seriously need to uh consider as a legitimate option here. I I think that uh you know he’s somebody that Aaron Rogers is really good friends with. They have a really great relationship. I’m sure that Rogers would would vouch for him. He’s always wanted to play with him. And then also we know that Pittsburgh has had conversations with OBJ. He said on Bill Maher’s podcast uh just a few weeks ago that he had conversations with the Steelers about potentially playing for them this year. So with Calvin Austin the third out and an opportunity presenting itself to be a number two wide receiver for an NFL team quarterback by his buddy Aaron Rogers, you better believe Odell Beckham Jr. is probably vying pretty hard to be signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as early as this week. But I think we could all agree here, guys, that the better options for the Pittsburgh Steelers, both short-term and probably long-term, would come via trade. All right, if they could get something going this week and and work the phones and uh and try and get a team that is kind of down in the dumps, a team that is probably one and three or 0 and4 to dump one of their veteran wide receivers here to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I think that would be the most ideal situation. Um, we’re not quite at the deadline portion of the season, so maybe teams aren’t as willing to give up, uh, one of their receivers in a trade. Uh, but definitely going to be interesting to see here, uh, if this, if Omar Khan can fleece somebody out of a wide receiver in terms of what the Steelers, I think, would be willing to give up. I don’t think they’re willing to give up a first or a second round pick, but I think the most they’d be willing to give up is a third round pick and Pat Frymouth. Unfortunately, Muth’s role in the offense has been significantly decreased over the last few weeks. He’s not getting open versus man coverage. He’s had some pretty bad drops and some bad moments. Um, and he’s not doing enough as a blocker uh either. So, you’re paying him top eight tight end money right now. Uh, he’s under contract for four more seasons. If there’s a team out there that’s willing to kind of kickstart their rebuild, get a day two pick and then add Friouth who’s under contract for that new team for this year plus three more years after this season. I think that might be something that a rebuilding team might be willing to do. Uh but we can take a look at some of the options here. Uh Tyreek Hill is certainly somebody that you got to keep your eye on. Now I know he has some uh issues going on right now outside of football that the league is in, you know, the Dolphins and all and he is trying to figure out right now. Um but he is certainly somebody that’s affordable for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s the same exact type of uh you know, type of player as Calvin Austin. He’s a he’s a juiced up version of him. You know, deep threat, yak threat, really good route runner. he can fill that role in this offense to a tea immediately. Uh he’s still one of the best receivers in the National Football League. The Steelers, at least from a football perspective, would be lucky to have Tyreek Hill. Then Jacobe Meyers definitely a name you got to keep your eye on here, guys, from the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders are one and three. Um you know, they’re certainly still rebuilding and they haven’t given him that new deal that he’s been looking for. Um you know, I think that he would be a perfect fit here in Pittsburgh. He’s a good route runner. He can get open versus man coverage. He’s got tough hands. He can play in the slot as well if you need him to. And I think that he’s exactly the type of receiver the Steelers would be willing to give maybe even a a shorter extension to as well. So keep your eye on Jacobe Meyers. Uh then another name to keep your eye on here is Chris Olive. All right. And I didn’t think Olive was a very realistic option in the off season. I thought the Saints would have wanted to keep him uh for their younger quarterbacks to see uh if those guys could do something this year, but they’re already 0 and4 guys. Olive hasn’t been too productive. He has he’s having less than 50 receiving yards a game there in New Orleans. Uh Spencer Rattler is not finding him consistently. Uh you know, he’s just just been a slow start. And I’ve been I’ve been talking with our uh Saints guy here at Chat Sportsman. He says that the Saints would be more willing to trade Chris Olive uh than Rasheed Shahed at this point. Um and he says that, you know, that the Saints would potentially be willing to trade Chris Olive. floated the idea to him earlier this week uh or actually earlier this morning about trading for Chris Olive, a third round pick plus Pat Footh and he was completely down for that idea. So I think that this is a more realistic possibility than people maybe give it credit for and he is the perfect type of receiver that the Steelers need right now. A great route runner, somebody uh that can separate versus man coverage. He can be a deep threat as well. Um you know he’s got a little bit of a concussion concern. He’s had a couple of those throughout his career to this point. But I think if you can trade um a third round pick and Pat Fri to the Saints in exchange for Chris Olive, I think that would be an absolute steal for Omar Khan and the Pittsburgh Steelers. So keep your eye on that possibility. But if it’s not Chris Olive, Rasheed Shahid is another guy to keep your eye on here from the New Orleans Saints. Um you know, he’s on his final year of his contract there in New Orleans. They haven’t extended him yet. He is a deep threat. So, if you’re looking for somebody to replace Calvin Austin’s role, not only as a deep threat and as kind of a speedster, but also as a punt uh punt returner, Shahid is one of the best in the league at both of those things. He’s got great ball tracking ability, one of the best true deep threats in the National Football League. So, definitely another name to keep your eye on there. But then another name to keep your eye on as well is Christian Kirk from the Houston Texans. The Texans have started out 1 and3 and the Steelers were interested in trading for Christian Kirk last uh trade deadline before the deadline from the Jacksonville Jaguars before Kirk ended up having his season ending injury. Uh the Texans aren’t really using him all that much. He he’s somebody that we know the Steelers have had interest in in the past. So definitely another name to keep your eye on. Plus, I don’t think Kirk would be that expensive. Maybe a mid to late day three pick is all you’d have to give up for Christian Kirk services. Uh, so I think these are the five names uh that to keep your eye on and that I would be pretty happy with if the Steelers ended up making a move for. So, let’s say you guys let me know down there in the comments section. Will the Pittsburgh Steelers add another wide receiver before their week six matchup versus the Cleveland Browns? And if so, who which wide receiver do you think they’re going to be adding? Do you think they’ll add OBJ? Do you think they’ll add Deontay Johnson? Do you think they make a trade for Chris Olive or somebody else? Let me know your answer to that question down there in the comments section. And that’ll be it for this morning’s edition of Steelers Talk. Later today, I’ll be putting out another video. I’m going to be watching the film uh after I’m done recording this video here from yesterday’s win versus the Vikings. I’ll have my film takeaways uh from Sunday’s win. Um really excited to break down this film, guys, later today with you. So, make sure you click that subscribe button to never miss any of the content we have here on Steelers Talk. [Music]

Who should replace Ramsey at nickel while he's out? Type 'BE' for Brandin Echols, 'BB' for Beanie Bishop Jr., 'DK' for Donte Kent, 'CJ' for CJ Gardner-Johnson, or 'SE' for Someone Else
Yes obj or olave
Ramsey shouldn’t have pretended to hurt his hamstring for that pick celebration… bad ju ju
Tyreek Hill or just get free agent O'Dell
They need to play Roman to see what he has for the team, you never know if you don't.
🖤💛💪🏿
What about Cory Trice coming back?
I don’t think we can trade Muth the fans like him to much
That fake hamstring injury celebration didn't age well
Tyreek Hill
Why aren't Steelers giving Roman Wilson a shot?!!! They can't use the injury excuse like they did last year.
STOP FLUFFING WITH MY EMOTIONS MAN. WTF
Like the video 👍
bring up beenie!
Im punching my phone
Hope its Hill lol.
The bigger issue is who is going to punt return. You can’t just put anybody back there for that.
Fuck it… go get Olave. He is the type of dog we need.
BE
Roman Wilson would be good to step in for us and I believe so anyhow, You have to give Roman Wilson a chance. I am so tired of people. Harping on him. Give him a chance. If it doesn't work out then you know where you stand with him
I also think the Colts have a handful of WRs we might be able to work a deal for..
Robert woods stinks
Why tf do yall believe what Gerry Dulac says??? This is the guy that said Robert woods that would make the team during training camp 😂😂😂
I would love for us to use Jabrill more and just have both peppers and Elliot at safety at all times as well as give Roman a chance to prove himself before we just move on and get a whole other WR
Ramsey looked like he injured his hamstring on the fumble recovery / TD run that was called back. The TV crew didn't seem to mention that unless I missed it.
Cory trice is coming bacc
Tell #5 all that playing like he pulled his hammy after the 1st quarter pick 6 that was called back… this that shit that happens
Yes,olave or hill.
no to Robert Woods
👍🏼🙏🏽👍🏼
Cj
Get Hill and CJ Gardner Johnson! They will help to cover this and later increase dept…
Yes to Jakobi Myers, keeep Muth, give Roman Wilson
Are you and Dulac doctors? I don’t see how any body gets that information from the Steelers at midnight on a Sunday.
BB
Time to give Roman Wilson a shot
Man I love Friermuth but he has dropped off. In fact, he was kinda lazy on the field goal attempt that got blocked. Guy ran right by him with no opposition.
Ramsey will miss the new clowns game and that’s it! You seen how he was when the hammy hit him on the fumble return for TD that was called back. He left came back in and then left again but he’s tougher than nails.
He may miss the bengays game but I’m almost certain he’ll be back for home game against green bay
Echols or Beanie head
