MOMENTUM: Will Milwaukee Brewers’ Regular Season Success translate into Post Season Success
The postseason is finally here and now we’re going to find out what the Brewers are really made out of. That’s next here on Locked On Brewers. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. And what a season it has been. And we are just beginning. Hey everybody, good to have you along. My name is Chuck Freeman, longtime sports cer here in the state of Wisconsin and proud host of Locked On Brewers, part of the Lockdown podcast network. We are your team every day. Onto the postseason, 97 wins. We’ll talk about that and what’s ahead in the week to come for the Milwaukee Brewers. Some pitching updates. We saw some guys on Sunday that we haven’t seen in a while. We’ll talk about them and how they possibly fit into the pitcher and who could possibly be next for the Milwaukee Brewers. All right, this episode is brought to you by 5Hour Energy. Five Hour Energy. Hey, enough with boring flavorless caffeine. Hop in the boat. Have some FiveHour Energy with your boy right here. You know I have one every day. The cherry flavored. But it’s time to get that fivehour energy, that flavor upgrade, the 5hour energy shots. Go to fivehour energy.com or Amazon and order yours today. Has it really been a long season though for the Milwaukee Brewers? Has it? I mean, I don’t know. I I It has been so fun this season. It has. Yeah, there’s a little sadness that the regular season is over. But now we’re going to answer the $99,000 question. How good is this team? The team won 97 games during the regular season. Are they good enough to win and advance and advance and get to the World Series? Because that’s the ultimate test, right? We’re tired of getting knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. It’s time for this team to get down to business and back up having the best record in baseball, which they earned over the weekend. It was a weekend where they were tested by the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds came here, won, took the first two games of the series. And again, I’ve heard from Brewer fans, and I and I and I love being the sounding board for you guys, and rarely am I the voice of reason. Rarely, anything am I ever the voice of reason. But in this case, I felt I I was for the Milwaukee Brewers, telling people to calm down. Uh, you know, I’m not going to tell you how to fan. You know, you got to do that. But I really do, and I I really believe things are going to be okay with this team. And I’m glad they won to finish off because I know had they gotten swept by the the Reds, there would be a lot of doubters going into next Saturday, this been a long week. The word around town was, “Well, man, they just couldn’t win a game. They were below the 500 mark since that 14game winning streak. I don’t they’re going to be one and done. I saw so many one and done on Twitter over the last week or so, but I’m glad I’m glad they were able to bounce back. Got down two nothing on Sunday, ended up roaring back in and winning that game four to two. But my goodness. Um so yeah, the Reds came in here, won the first two games of the series, they qualified for the playoffs. Three teams from the NL Central are going into the postseason. Three teams from this division, the supposed weakest division in baseball. Three teams got in. Three teams. The Reds got ahead of the big market Mets. And I was glad to see the Mets fall out. And happy for the Reds as well. Usually I’m not happy for other teams, but man, the Reds, those guys battled. Yeah, they’re not the greatest team in the world, right? I mean, who knows what’s going to happen in the postseason, but you know, they seem like a good bunch of guys, good broadcasters and all that. I like those guys, but I was glad to see them get ahead over the arrogant New York Mets who spent all this money and this is what it got them. I was I was good to see that. I didn’t want them to get in the postseason at the expense of the Milwaukee Brewers, which in effect they did because they won two or three here, but still. Um, but 97 wins for the Brewers, setting the franchise record. They had tied the franchise record when they got their 96th win. It was like, “All right, are they going to get to 97?” But Murphy said before the game, he told the media, “I want these guys to go out there and give it their all in game 162. I want them to go out there and give it their all in 162.” And that they did. That they did. they their pitching route the pitching lineup for the game was as if it’s u a spring training game you like in the middle of March when you go out to uh Phoenix or Scottsdale wherever they’re playing Mesa um you know home game Phoenix wherever they are um and you know you’ll see six or seven pitchers and that’s what the Brewers were doing there they pitched Peralta for a couple of innings and everybody had their turn and we’re going to get to some of that coming up here in a little bit but Yeah, the Brewers were able to get that 97th win. And yeah, that’s cool. Uh to see this, this was a special team. This is a special team in that I think there are certain years where you really gravitate to a team. And this isn’t to take anything away from 2022 and and 2023 short stays, but I thought in 2018 people bought into that one. 2011, I think that people really hitched their wagons to that one. Of course, 1982, everybody was on board with that, right? I mean, there were parades when they won the division title uh in impromptu parades in downtown Milwaukee. But yeah, I think people really got a got on board in this team and those winning streaks certainly helped throughout the season. guys like Terraang and Freelick and even Andrew Vaughn and Ortiz and you go right down the list. Contrarus, Freddy Peralta. Uh, you know, some of these guys became household Perkins, Monasterio. I feel like some of these guys became household names. And you can’t say that a lot about the Milwaukee Brewers over their their history, right? I mean, the Brewers have been an anonymous bunch to a lot of a lot of people for most of their franchise. Nobody’s really identified with those guys, but I feel like people identified with the 2025 Milwaukee Brewers. I feel they have. I could tell it in Twitter. I the the read I get when I go to games, when I cover games, uh in and around Milwaukee, I see more Brewer shirts than ever. And it’s only going to get ramped up here in the next couple of weeks. It’s only going to get better. So yeah, the Brewers 97 wins. You don’t look at a 97 wins. They earned every one of those wins. Some of those w some of those games, my goodness, our our blood pressure went up in some of those games. They got down 11 walk-off wins, some great victories, and we’re going to talk about all that at a different date. All right, when this season’s over. Hopefully, we’re a long ways away from talking about that. But two 20 uh 2025 is going to be one to remember. Now, I don’t want it to be remembered as the season where they won 97 games and bowed out in three games in the divisional series. Uh-uh. Can’t happen. 2.6 million fans went through the ballpark and they had over two and a half million fans for the 15th time in 17 years. That says a lot about Milwaukee, man. Uh, the state of Wisconsin, Brewers fans in general, uh, ratings were up on TV this year. Uh, I know the TV ratings, I don’t know what the ratings on on radio were, but I just saw the TV ratings a couple of weeks ago from Adam McCelie put it on Twitter and I thought and they were great. People are tuning in each and every night watching Brewers baseball. Like I said, I can’t say that for much of my life. And a lot of my life I think well not the Brewers weren’t always always on everyday baseball but I mean this has been a Packer State but I feel like this time of the year when you get to the postseason yeah things leveled off here in the last couple of weeks but I feel like once we get to the postseason and we’re going to ramp things up 10,000 people out there for the pancake breakfast last Friday morning when Murphy was flipping pancakes at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. Very cool. Now, the Brewers are going to have five days off. Five days off. And Murphy says they’re just not going to come in, take lacks of days ago batting practice, take a couple of ground balls in the infield, and call it a day. He says they’re going to be competitive. And you know, Murphy is the college coach. He’s he does not want to take the foot off the the gas pedal, which I feel like the Brewers may might have done that a little bit here in the last couple of weeks, right? Maybe that’s only human nature, but these five days, he wants them to keep that intensity. Now, Christian Yelich said this the other day, which I thought was interesting. He said, “We need a rest. We really do need a rest.” Which would which would be the opposite of what Murphy wants here in the next couple of days. Monday, they’ll have off and then Tuesday they’ll get back to workouts at Afam Field. So, we’ll see if Murphy if that works. Okay, Murphy keeping the foot on the pedal. He’s practicing in pads. He’s practicing in pads. He’s he’s they’re putting on the whole uniform and they’re practicing in pads. That’s what they’re doing. He doesn’t want to take a chance of easing up the college coach in him. And maybe that’s the right approach to this uh to this team. We’ll see. But that’s the way this team has played all season long. They don’t take days off. These guys all want to play and as Murphy has said all season long, they’re a hungry bunch. They are a hungry bunch. So, he says they’re going to be competitive. He says we’re going to get uncomfortable. He says there’s going to be some this is going to be intense here in the next couple of days. He’s going to get these guys ready. Even though this time of the year, you might think, okay, these guys need a few days off, but starting Tuesday, they’re getting after it. They are getting after it. This is not going to be like the first couple of days of spring training what I understand where it’s very casual. No, these guys are they earned they earned this to get here and I think Murphy sees we got to keep up that same intensity all the way to the finish line. Some people have asked me which I find it hard to believe. Boy, I wish the Brewers played this week. um because they can keep playing and not take the five days off and you know keep keep in that mode of playing playing ball. I say please no they earned this by and we know what happens in the last couple of years. Anytime you have a chance to pass into that next round of the playoffs and this goes for football or baseball. I hear this like when the Packers Oh, should they have played in a wild card game or would that would that um would that be better if they played in a wild card game or just advanced to the divisional playoffs? Obviously, the less games you got to play, the better. Thank you very much. I’ll go on to the next round of the playoffs. I’ll take that first round buy. So, if you’re telling me, do I want to play in the playoffs this week? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. I’ll take that first round buy that I earned and I’ll meet you in the second round. Let San Diego and the Cubs worry about who’s going to play the Brewers. All right. I don’t want any part of that wild card round. None of this, well, we got to keep the momentum going, you know, the the intensity of playing every day. No. No. And if they lose in the in the postseason in this first round, it’s not going to be because they took five days off. And this is more days off than you would get in an All-Star break. But yeah, I’ll take the buy. They earned it. That’s why you get a buy if you have a top two record in um in baseball in in your division, in your league. And the Brewers certainly earned it and Philadelphia has as well. So, we’ll see what happens here in the next couple of days. I’m going to the workouts on Tuesday. There’s going to be inner squad game somewhere this week, maybe a couple of them. But three teams in the NL Central made it. And um congratulations out to the Reds. Terrific gesture by the way for the Milwaukee Brewers, the organization when the Reds were celebrating getting into the postseason. They were on the field and they put on the scoreboard, you know, the Reds playoff bound or whatever. I thought that was really cool for a visiting stadium to do that. That was really cool for the Brewers to do that. Now, had the Reds knocked the Brewers out of the postseason to do that, h maybe the Brewers don’t do something like that. But the Brewers were already in. And that was a nice gesture from the Brewers to do something like that. So, all right, we come back, talk about Freddy, talk about a couple of pitchers we saw in different roles this this weekend and uh how that might translate to postseason play. We’ll get to that coming up next here on Locked On Brewers. Lockdown Brewers part of lockdown podcast network. We are your team every day. Excuse me. Feel like I’m losing my voice a little bit. No, this is not the time to lose your voice here in the postseason. I but voice feels a little horse. Had to do a lot of radio this past week and uh my my high school football scoreboard show Friday night and so voice is feeling a little off today. Anyway, uh five hour energy. I think Freddy Peralta is the Sai Young award winner. Man, what a year he had. I know he wanted se 20 wins out of him, but he went 17 and a six. 17-6, a 2.70 earn run average. Clearly his best year, third all time on the Milwaukee Brewer list of strikeouts. Alltime list. Uh Freddy is uh obviously uh a Brewer Hall of Famer. Probably a Walk of Famer, I would say, in back of Amfam Field one day, right? I mean, Freddy Peralta, I feel like he’s done enough to to get one of those um to get in a walk of fame outside of Amfam Field. I just thought of that now and I’m like, “Yeah, Freddy does. I feel he does. He belongs with those guys. Been here since 2018. He’s been a part of all these postseasons.” Right now, he hasn’t pitched well in the last couple of postseasons. He could pitch better. He didn’t pitch great in 2023 or 2024, but we need Freddy to come up big Saturday in game one. No matter who it is, need him to come through. But by winning 17 games, he becomes the Brewers most winningest pitcher since Zack Davies won 17 in 2017. If you were to tell me who had the most wins before Freddy got to 17 this year, I wouldn’t have landed on Zack Davies getting 17 in 2017. I don’t know. I mean, I barely remember. I mean, Zack Davies, obviously, he was here, you know, in those early council years, but I would never guess 17 wins in 2017. How do I not remember that? Zack Davies, Zack Davies got the 17 wins. My goodness, not good for him. But Freddy Peralta just an amazing I can tell you Zack Davies didn’t have a St. Young awardw winning year that Freddy Peralta had. Oh, remember Freddy’s wins 17 and six. I see the critics already talking about the Brewers. Some people like the Brewers. Others say the Brewers can’t go far because of their lack of power. But when I see a team that’s among the league leaders in defense, among the league leaders in stolen bases, among the league leaders in running the bases, among the league leaders of hitting with runners in scoring position, I don’t know. That makes up for a lack of home runs. You ask me. I see a lot of games though. Watched a lot of games where the Brewers came up clutch home. I mean, Jansen hit a home run on Sunday to give them the lead. A two-run blast in that four-run third inning. So, the Brewers have hit home runs. Yeah, maybe they don’t hit them like the 27 Yankees or the 82 Brewers, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I’m not going to get let that be a detriment. Uh, I feel like the Brewers right now, to me, they’re the favorites in the National League to come out of here. Vegas odds as of tonight, late Sunday night, I see they have the Phillies followed by the Dodgers and Milwaukee. Now, earlier in the week, they had the Dodgers having the best odds of going to the World Series. But that is flip-flop. Philly has moved ahead. Philly’s number one, Dodgers to Milwaukee three in the National League. Okay, I would give the Brewers better shot than the Dodgers. I think it’s going to become It’s going to come down the Philadelphia and Milwaukee and NLCS, but we’re not going to look ahead. Not going to look ahead. I’ll tell you what, I liked what McGill was throwing. He He didn’t hit a 100 on the gun today, but man, um two Ks look great in this one inning. uh he was asked after the game, “Man, where do you see a role on this team?” And just like the rest of the guys on this team, I don’t care what my role is. I just want to help my team get to the World Series. How about that? And the Brewers are full of guys like this up and down this lineup. So, who knows? Miguel might not be the closer. It could be Ure with Migill, the setup guy. You know how it is in the postseason. see guys with a lot of different roles pitching unusual spots for whatever reason. In the postseason, we reinvent the rules and we, you know, we just reinvent the we reinvent the wheel is what we do. All teams do. All managers do. So, I would say probably your rebate is going to close with McIll as a setup guy, but who knows? That could be in reversed. Um, the Brewers activated McIll and DL Hall. I feel like DL Hall is going to have a spot on the roster. did give up a home run. Uh they DFAD Eric Fetty, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t be added um to a roster spot uh in the postseason. I believe the 40man is at 38 right now. So, but I’m not going to worry about Eric Betty right now. That’s not my concern. McGill and DL Hall and Urebe and Ashby and guys like that are my concern. Robert Gasser pitched on Saturday night and I’ve said this. I mean, I don’t want to put Gasser on the postseason roster. He didn’t look great on Saturday, but he’s coming back from Tommy John surgery, so he gets a whole lot of slack from me. So, I’m not expecting Gasser to contribute. again. He pitched a couple of innings on Saturday night and I don’t know. To me, you don’t throw that guy into a postseason. You have better options. You save him for another year. But Chad Patrick, I feel like Chad Patrick makes the postseason roster. He’s going to get some big outs for these guys. I feel like another guy you could use and maybe as a game three starter. Who knows? Who knows? But I thought McIll looked good. I thought Hall for the most part despite giving up that home run and uh we’ll see how they work the Ureb McGill back end. Miz was in relief on Saturday. Wasn’t bad. I don’t have anything really to complain about that with Miz. Uh not totally bad. First time coming out of relief. There was some some iffy parts about him uh when he was pitching. gave up a few, but um now Miz and Relief, that’s going to be his role in the postseason. And they used him out of the bullpen, gave him a little test run. I was surprised they used him as long as they did. I think he pitched like 60 pitches, but he was getting some work in. All right, we come back Sunday, there was the 25th anniversary of something in Brewers baseball history. We’ll talk about that and we’ll kind of look ahead of who the Brewers might play on Saturday. That’s coming up next. Chuck Freeman here on Lockdown Brewers. Episode brought to you by Zipex. Zipex. Zipix toothpicks. Remember walking out of that ballpark with uh friend and colleague Doug Russell, who’s been on this podcast. We were one like the last BD guys to walk out of there. Uh didn’t take anything. Um, but I remember the ceremony was Bob Uker hosted the ceremony and um, it was great. They brought in former Packers, former Brewers, you name it. Uh, former Braves, Warren Spawn was there. It was just a great day and a sad day because it’s a place that I grew up as a kid. my dad taking me to games and um remember going to my first Brewer game in 1975, seeing the 1975 All-Star game 25 years ago today. They closed up shop on County Stadium and we got the beautiful ballpark we have now, Amam Field, and they’re renovating that place and keeping it up to date. And I love it. I I love Amfam Field. Uh, I think going to the roof was the best thing that the Sea Leagues ever did other than keeping the Brewers in Milwaukee. But, uh, yeah, when I saw that 25 years ago, the Brewers and the Brewers played the Reds in that final game as well. Um, the Reds will play the Dodgers in the first round. The winner gets uh, Philadelphia next weekend. They mentioned San Diego and the Cubs. The winner takes Milwaukee um on on Saturday and you got game one Saturday, game two Monday. and then game three Wednesday and game four Thursday and then if necessary you’d come back to Milwaukee for a game five which would be a week from Saturday but got to get through one and two first of all. So, kind of odd that the Brewers will play f will play Saturday and then play Monday, but I guess they’re not going to run up against you’re not going to play everybody, I think, on Sunday because you don’t want to run up against the the NFL, right? Um, and Monday, we’ll see where the Brewers are playing, you know, like game times. I’ll be curious to see what the game times are. Monday, will they have an afternoon game? So, they’re not up against Monday Night Football. Would they put the Brewers and Padres’s in an afternoon game? If it’s Padres’s or would they if it’s the Cubs, would they put them in prime time? Who knows? I do see the Cubs are a slight favorite, a minus 120 favorite against San Diego. I think San Diego is going to win that series. I think they’re going to win that series and they may even sweep the Cubs, which would be funny. All right, that’s going to do it. We got a big week here. We’re going to have some guests on and we’re going to be here every day talking Brewers baseball with you. here on Lockdown Brewers. Thanks for joining us, man. Stop repeating yourself all the time. It's annoying, and you sound stupid. Make your point and move on.
It was fun watching these guys go hot then back down to earth. I hope they find that spark again, lets go brewers!
Chuck, thanks for always being there at 2 am when I can't sleep! I appreciate your enthusiasm and positivity.
I agree that if we lose in the playoffs, it is not going to be because of five days off. The fewer games that we have to play, the better. I don't want any part of the wild card round. A first round bye gives the players a chance to heal and prevents further injuries.
Chuck I told ya Collins does not belong in outfield and I see Murphy finally now sees it. Pretty diving catches don't equal with mis read balls and clanks of the glove. Pinch hit and maybe DH.
Peralta doesn't even meet the criteria to get a plaque on the Wall of Honor amazingly enough.
Turang will carry us in feel he took it up a notch mlb guy says frelick ,
Agree on Collins n. Chuck repeating self other guy is worse
I think SD will win too. But I kind of want NLCS Brewers vs Cubs. To see them get to the World Series by beating the Cubs would just make it all the more sweeter. To see them beat Counsel to get there would icing on the cake!
I suspect the bloopers will have a hard time in the playoffs again the last six weeks was a flop I don't see this getting much better
I been waiting for this moment of the season since mid august.
I honestly think MLB needs to start the season one week earlier to avoid stretches where a team has to play 19 games in 18 days.
There’s enough warm weather/domed teams to schedule this. You want your athletes to play as fresh as possible, not be wore out and tired, physically and mentally.
limped into playoffs and not really expecting too much meh😑
Seeing Brett Suter celebrating, showing those reds how it’s done made me 😂.
I want the Reds against the brewers in the NLCS. Keep the travel close.
I hope he goes back to what worked that is not batting Yelich leading off
Hope it's not another year that we're built for the season. Not playoffs. Oh ya. Didn't the owner apply something like that.
Really surprised that Feddie was d.f.a.ed given how he has pitched over the past few outings. Plus he's a veteran and post season needs that.
Thanks for the hard work this regular season Chuck! Greatly appreciate every show and hope this year we can actually make some noise. Regardless of what happens, I had a very fun time watching this team turn around from that ugly start and make it the best winning season they've had.
Freddy Peralta deserves to be in the walk of fame more than Bob wickman does. Wickman was so jealous of Ichiro that I had to grow up listening to his racist but call Suzuki slurs
"People have really identified with these guys"
I was at the game yesterday and there was a dad with a couple young boys sitting behind me (somewhere between 6-8 years old), and every time somebody came up to bat, one of the kids was like "oh! it's Collins! It's Durbin! Yeli!!!!!" – like, this kid actually knew the names of each player and was excited to see them.
It's only one anecdote, but it definitely fits what you're saying here.
Win the pennant for Uecker!
All Right Brewers let's win in the playoffs.
Keep doing these podcast. I ENJOY your relaxing voice. I'm not going to lie I look forward to yours more than Sneide. I think it is voice and just the low down relaxing style. But, everyone once I don't see a new vid from you, I watch Sneide. He is good too but he speaks too fast and me being 51, need a second or 2 to process what he is saying. You're both good. When I am a die hard Brewer fan it's hard to miss the news and your viewpoints. I especially like your personal inputs at the end. Keep up the good work!
How many people have pitched for the Brewers this season?
There absolutely loosing in post season.
The 1-week bye is usually a bad thing for teams–takes them out of their rhythm. But in this case, with the mediocre way the season ended for the Brewers, I think the bye will be a good thing. It might act like a reset and give the Brewers new life headed into the playoffs. That's my hope, anyway.
I say this as a die hard Brewers fan… Nobody should believe in this team to win a playoff series until they actually do it. 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024 is all we need to remember. I hope they prove me wrong!
the crew stunk up the last month of the season i see an early exit from the playoffs

I remember it crystal clear. I was like 25 in 1982 and I went to Brewers games. I don't remember The Brewers being an 'Anonymous' team in 1982? Paul Molitor. Robin Yount. Don Sutton to name a few. Great team. Bad ass players. Popular.
Chuck, which of the Murph experiments down the stretch do you think will stick into the playoffs? Yelich in the lead off spot? Bauers starting in left field? Miz out of the bullpen over starting game 3?
Brewers have to win with pitching and defense
The delay can only be a healing time for those phases if the game
