MLB NOW | Brian Kenny GOES CRAZY on New York Mets collapse, eliminated from postseason contention
Let us know what you think though. Meanwhile, we have a day to ponder before the playoffs begin. What was the biggest reason for the Mets collapse? We’re on X at MLB now. We’ll talk about that. Let’s talk Mets. Mike Lola is here. Mike, great to see you. Thank you, VK. John Haymon took us 6 a.m. to get here today. Good job, John. Made it. All right. You’re watch You’re watching it in person. So, what what what’s your overall view of the Mets in this weekend? I mean, it took a lot for them to fall out. They finished seven and 14. They were 38 and 55 since June 13th. So, they were a bad team. I know a lot of people were harping on they don’t do the little things. is they don’t have attention to detail. They just weren’t good. Their pitching was not good. The big problem was the starting rotation basically imploded over the last three and a half months. Peterson, who was an all-star, was a shell of himself in the second half. Uh Maniah was not great when he came back, although he was pretty good yesterday, at least for five outs. I’m not sure why he didn’t stay in the game. Uh obviously, Sanga went from the ERA leadership to basically a non- entity. He was a spectator and a minor leaguer by the end of the year. So, uh, basically the whole rotation imploded. They just were not good. And I don’t want to hear it’s about lack of attention to detail. Sure, they might have missed a cut off man here or there. That’s not how you get to be 38 and 55. I’m sorry. Yeah. Well, well, you know, again, their offense is coming from Sodto and Alonzo. Those guys are not good in the field. And Alonzo tries and Sodto is sometimes I don’t even know how to describe it in a brief sentence, but Right. best hitters are not great defenders and their best defenders are not great hitters other than Lindor. I think just if I’m widening it out because I’ve said many times like I would have played Tyrone Taylor Luis Anelkun all the time. I like my basebally guys. I like speed. I like all that. It’s a general impatience though, Mike. I I’m looking at it broadly when I was at the five years of Steve Con is like there’s never a year where they’ll accept, hey, you know what? Take your foot off the accelerator and rebuild. Take a look at the payrolls here just over the last several years uh and see where they are. They go from fifth from year one immediately. Again, Steve Cohen’s willing to spend first first and their second to the Dodgers who went berserk this year. Um, I think there’s something to the impatience of it that we must get all in every year. I think there’s a price to pay. Yeah. And I think what happens there is you change a lot of parts and you don’t give it time to either come together or not. And I think and I think the biggest I don’t want to say failure or the biggest lack of attention that they had I think was the starting pitching because um the biggest gamble for me was Holmes going to the rotation. He did pretty good you know and his last start he was fantastic. Everyone’s like could he last you know all six months and he actually did. He did a great job. I just don’t think if you’re competing with the big horses in the game. No offense to Maniah. He had a great season. I don’t mind them signing him back but where’s the where’s the crochet? Where’s that guy that you if you have all this money there’s a little more to get that one guy that you think could just solidify a lot look 50 million a year went to Sodto again don’t forget to not Gregory stood to Juano so there’s a price to be paid even if like oh no money is no object no money eventually you get to the end of it I think Mike makes a good point I think they were a little too cautious in in the trades right they they didn’t want to give up Sprro and Jet Williams that would have been the combo with a couple other pieces to get Crochet and at this point SPro looks pretty good. Jed Williams looks very good in the minors, but to have Crochet to have that number one guy, that would have been huge. Same at the deadline. Wanted to hold on to those top five guys. And good thing they held on to Mlan, that’s for sure. But, you know, they were pretty cautious. I think I want to say, and we have a statement from Steve Cohen, right? Steve Cohen had to put something out today, right? Here we go. It’s uh Mets, Wow, it’s this is a long one. Mets fans everywhere, I owe you an apology. You did your part by showing up and supporting the team that had great support. We didn’t do our part. do a postm morning. Figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations. Raw emotions today. I know your time and effort you put into the team. They have great backing and you can read the rest of it. Your emotions tell me you care and continue to motivate the organization to do better. Um, thank you to the best fans in the sport. They were they are a great fan. They really do support that team. I have to I am still stunned. The whole time I thought the Mets are in the playoffs. The whole time I thought they would make the playoffs. They were 21-9. They were 21 games over 500. They again the thing I forgot by the way the Braves went away for you. Like I threw that in there like the Braves were supposed to they went away for you and they didn’t get there. I I I think there is something to again the general impatience. You think you can have the foot on the accelerator year after year. Their young pitching is now starting to arrive. So they didn’t make those moves, but now here’s three guys that they threw into the pennant race. That is how you build toward the future. It is. But it’s not how you win in the present. That that’s that’s the hard and you can every year. It’s always like you have to have a year where hey maybe we’re tagging on to the last wild card and that’s it. You know we’re gonna build. Yeah. A few weeks ago we had the conversation when the Mets were rolling and Mlan and Sprro and Tong were doing so well like is there a chance that we might see three rookie starters in the postseason for the Mets and it was like there’s a chance you know there’s a chance. So for me with all this money you spend I like their offense. I like their their brand names. They got big time people that are excited. You know as a fan I’d be excited to go to the park to see. Yeah. But I can’t bank on three rookies going down into September. And I know you’re a fan of spending. You you like spend that money. You can afford it. I don’t know. Does Steve Con get more characters? If you’re a billionaire, you get to look at his tweet. It goes on forever. They cut me off at 300 whatever. I don’t know. Uh you know, the two guys they really needed to get ended up on the prime contender, the Phillies, right? If they’d gotten Johan Duran and Harrison Bader back and they didn’t want to do Bader again. They had him last year. He was fantastic. He killed the Mets. Durant has got two more years to go. It’s not just this year. Helley’s a rental. Rogers is a rental. They did give up decent prospects. Not the top guys for them. They got they got the wrong guys did implode. I would have never no one saw what his performance. No. Anyone said he would have performed like that. I thought it was a great pickup. I did. You know, saying that back end him and Edwin Diaz. I said, “Wow, they made that bullpin solid.” Now, now John was going right past the attention to detail. That’s not what we do here. Let’s do some unbasebally plays and we’ll and we’ll do it. The Mets edition. Just look. All they have to do is they have to win the weekend. They have to win the final day. This is on Friday. They were up two nothing. Tie game. The hot shot bounced off Alonzo’s glove. Okay. Made it 3-2 Marlins. Same inning. Austin Ramirez, a catcher. Steal second. No throw. Look how it just takes off on Gregory Sodto. Just got to miss him. There’s two outs. He’s He’s a catcher, Mike. He’s dancing to third base with two outs. Yeah, this is this is unacceptable to to allow it to not there’s not even a throw. Feel two bases and then look still two outs. Xavier Edwards base hit. The Marlins loathe the Mets. I mean they so it’s like I have to admire how much they hate the Mets. I have a there because when you go play at home everything is let’s go Mets. And look at here. Look what happened. Jeff Mciel on an 02. Mark Btos was running by. He thought was it a bark? He he took strike three. Yeah that was a mistake. I mean, they made a few mistakes. That Alonzo play is just not a good defender went to the wind. Attention to detail. Beyond that, the guy was running from third base. He never would have gotten him anyway. So, that didn’t really hurt them. I mean, every you could see this with every team where they make some errors. Sodto was a guy that they Gregory Sodto, a guy they picked up at at mid-stream, right? It wasn’t a guy they had. Look, the Yankees got Dval. He’s like that, too, at holding runners. They’re even worse, I think. But nobody notices because the Yankees are hitting five home runs a game, right? So, that That’s the problem. They’re not doing the big things. It’s really not just the little things. It’s the big things. The little things on the big things. Okay. How about the medium things? They get the mean the post 38 and 55. They did a lot wrong. Did a lot wrong. Uh again, uh the the Guardians going in the other direction. 15 and a half out at one point. Miracle Braves, the 1978 Yankees with Ron Gry. They’re both 14 back. They came back, but the Guardians 15 and a half back. And again, Mike, they didn’t even have to win this game. They had they had already gotten through. Tigers had lost to Boston, so they knew. And yet and they’re yet, wait, they’re down three. They came out. They had to tie it in the eighth. They’re down three in the 10th. And they hit a walk-off. I mean, they’re unbelievable. They’re just rolling. And and they are a true team that I believe they are the sum of the parts are that product of the sum of the parts is so much better than the individual what you see on the on paper. And and they’re rolling right now. Their pitching’s coming along in September. Their starters have done a great job. And this is a team that not only traded Bieber, Class A is nowhere in the picture. And it kind of hung like a dark cloud on the organization. Like, whoa, what is going on? This is some serious allegations for them to be able to turn it around and focus. I look back 11 games out September 4th. I mean, does Steven Vote deserve another manager of the year award? Why not? Because he he he put those guys in a position to say, “Hey, let’s play our game.” And it worked out. Look, they they traded Shane Bieber and we had Chris Antinetti on about two weeks ago and he had said we’re always have to be looking ahead because they’re 25th in payroll a year two years down and they got a controllable pitcher that they can use for the So I’m saying the answer isn’t for the Mets to cut down to become 25th in payroll. But somewhere, hey man, we’re rolling out. This is our club. And something you said does make more sense to me now than it did 20 years ago, Mike, is that your continuity and letting a team gel and become that team. I think there’s value in that. This is a true team. Very admirable. They do a great job there to have a negative run differential to have that deficit with 10 11 games in September. No one has ever done that before. Uh really just a terrific job. I I do think Vot’s probably the manager of the year. He’s done an amazing amazing work there. They have two guys who are above league average offensively, too. Yeah.

New manager new coaches
When you listen to some of the things that Heyman says you have to scratch your rear. Reporter or not, he isn't very bright or intuitive!
Freddy, Mookie, and Shohei play great defense. There’s plenty of others as well Judge, Witt jr., and Machado just to name a few more. Idk what this dude’s talking about. The Poler Bears contract is okay. Soto tho that contract is terrible. Half that money should have been spent on pitching. They probably make the playoffs if that had happened.
You can’t BUY a playoff spot or World Series! Nothing guaranteed!
No clutch hitting. Stat padders This is where analytics fails. Great numbers for Soto and Alonzo. What did they do in the late innings? Nothing!!!
Can we return Soto? He cares only about himself. Any real fan who watched this season knows he killed the morale
Uncle Stevie didn't resign Iglesis, Maton, and Quintana !
It makes upset when everybody says Alonzo wasn't a good first baseman. Are you kidding me? If you watch the game every game like we met fans you saw how alonzo would sacrifice himself to get those outs at first bad throws he would pick. I thought alonzo was a pretty good first basement. And if it wasn't for Alonzo this year, getting clutch hits and bringing in runs. This analysis is not accurate.
I mean it i wont watch if mendoza back
