He asked about whether the nba has considered synthetic balls. Â JB said they still use pig skin, but he wants them to make balls using sustainable recycled material and trash.Â
Yeah ok so anyways the NBA balls are leather (cowhide) and they already tried switching to synthetic in 2006 but many high profile players (Shaq, Nash, Dirk, Ray, etc) complained non stop (said the balls felt sticky, but then slick when sweaty, didn’t bounce the same and caused cuts on their fingers) and a group actually filed a grievance with the player’s union so they switched back after a few months.  Nobody cared what WNBA players had to say, so they stuck with the synthetic balls.  Decade before JB entered the league so maybe he doesn’t know.  His trash balls sound cool but companies (Wilson for example) have already made eco friendly balls made at least partially of recycled rubber, and then there’s also Eco sports vegan basketballs.
It’s been nearly 20 years, though, so maybe there’s been advancements worth exploring, but based on how things went down in 2006, these vegan/recycled balls might be adequet for some consumers who shoot around recreationally, but serious pro ballers are going to be unhappy with them and fight any change.
