IS IT TIME TO START WORRYING ABOUT SEBASTIAN COSSA? (Detroit Red Wings News)
Well, this ain’t the only video we’ve made about a Detroit Red Wings prospect for today because what I wanted to do was get into potentially some territory of worry for the Detroit Red Wings and a prospect that happens to have been one of the more highly touted names in the organization. You know him, he’s on the screen. You saw the title and thumbnail of this video. Today we are talking about Sebastian Kosa because I wanted to ask the question to y’all here. Are you worried about this guy? Now, the Detroit Red Wings, they will have themselves a hockey game later today against the Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time of me recording this audio, we don’t know the rosters. We don’t know who’s cut. We don’t know what roster moves have been made. So, if Sebastian Kosa is still with the Red Wings, then you can take everything here with a grain of salt. But I’m just going to talk about some of the latest talking points in regards to Kosa because right now he’s 22 years old, still a pretty big goalie, 66209, drafted by the Red Wings in the 15th overall spot in 2021. very intriguing draft spot because he was the first goalender taken in the 2021 draft despite the fact that that honor probably was supposed to be Yesper Walsteads. Walstead was the unanimous number one ranked goalender out of the entire draft class. And I mean he was even ranked top 10 by a bunch of guys to go in the draft normally. Walstead right now is a Minnesota wild guy that is probably destined for some pretty good things after having a stellar past few AHL years. Now his AHL stint in 24-25 was not great, but Yesper Walstead is on track to becoming the next best thing for Minnesota. Kosa, on the other hand, you can’t say that Red Wings fans are feeling that same optimism here. Now, I don’t want to overreact to preseason games, one or two or three bad performances or any performance for that matter. I don’t want to totally throw stuff to the wall and say that that’s going to be permanent. But what I did want to do was take a look at the most recent Red Wings game against the Buffalo Sabres. This happened just a few days ago. And if we can pull it up, I probably should have had this up earlier, but I did not. I apologize. This happened two days ago on Saturday the 27th and as you can see from the game log, Sebastian Kosa led in four goals on 20 shots against for an 800 save percentage. This game was written about by Max Boltman on the Athletic on the Red Wings Stockwatch. Who’s rising and who’s falling this preeason? The Athletic is paid for material behind a payw wall. So, we’re not going to go out there and read this article. Instead, we’re going to get Boltman’s thoughts in the form of this piece posted on red wingsider.com that has the quote from the Boltman article about KOSA. Red Wings inside source unveils disappointment is a trade looming. Yeah, okay. There’s a lot of, you know, clickbay stuff going on in that title and I’m not going to say that I’m not guilty of doing the same, but still. This is what Boltman wrote about in regards to Sebastian Kosa after the game on Saturday. Even more glaring was Buffalo’s fourth goal, which was Taage Thompson’s second of the night in which Sebastian Kosa was way out of position and swimming for an extended stretch of time before Thompson finally put it home. There were at least two and arguably three points of that sequence in which Buffalo had the puck on its sticks in a scoring position with a largely open net. I didn’t have an opinion in either direction on Kosa’s preseason debut against the Chicago Blackhawks, and I’m definitely not going to make too big a deal out of a couple of exhibition goals regardless. But for a player who could really use a strong start this year after a rocky finish last year, I haven’t seen that yet. And the article has the actual goal itself. This is the Tage Thompson play which resulted in this KOSA goal. I mean, you think about what happens here. Kosa’s way out of position. He’s leaning all the way to his left. He kind of loses a foot. He dives. He waits. Then the play goes back over to the faceoff circle and Kosa, he’s got his back to the puck. It goes over to Thompson and boom, it’s a one in the back of the net. Kosa’s way out to lunch there. Hayy, not a great goal to give up in the slightest. And it was one of these situations where it’s like, yeah, Sebastian Kosa kind of needs to have a nice game or two just to get that confidence going through him. And to expand even more on that, I wanted to go over to the Detroit Red Wings postgame thread. This was on our Detroit Red Wings. So, here’s what some of the Wings fans had to say about the Sabres and Wings game after the fact. If we just search for KOSA and we try to take a look at what folks are going out there to say KOSA and Ammo are clearly not ready for the NHL. Dillipox writes, “Yeah, Bees said Kosa had poor lateral movement in this one. Also seemed to overcommit more than once. Still the same issues that he had when he was drafted.” Dillypac says Tesaron 2 says, “Man, I hope Trey Austinine hits because I’m not sold on Sebastian Kosa. Small sample size, but I’m more confident in Pastava than Kosa at this point. I think Trey Augustine will be the guy long term.” No juice box for you says that Kosa started slow in Grand Rapids as well. He was solid down the stretch last year and was a beast in the playoffs. Let him get some reps. I think he’ll settle in nicely. He also wasn’t exactly playing with quality defense in front of him. If not, I am glad we do have a solid option in Augustine as well. The only one I was really concerned about was the fourth goal. It kind of looked like he lost it and he gave up on it at the end there. There are a number of folks going out there and saying they’re not worried about Sebastian Kosa. They care more about the team forchecking effectively and putting more shots on goal. Then dope sickness went out there and asked, “How is Kosa looking? haven’t caught one of his games yet. I’m surprised a lot of people haven’t commented on this yet because this game thread was all over him. There’s a lot we could expand on, but the bottom line is probably still not ready yet. An NHL goalie would have saved all four of those goals. It’s concerning. Stanley for Wing said the accumulation of recent showings that is. Hopefully, it’s just Kosa’s nerves. I’m not confident that he’s going to get us wins, but I hope he gets to start at least a couple of more games because if the issue is nerves, you’d think he’d be able to settle in a little bit having had four appearances in a little more than a week. He’s not ready. The man with no name says, “I’m starting to worry.” So, folks are indeed bringing up some optimism. Hey, not worried. More worried about the team in front of him. Max Boltman is writing about in the Athletic how he doesn’t really want to put too much stock in it, but he can’t acknowledge that Kosa probably needed to have some better showcases in this game. And then you have a lot of folks going out there and literally saying like, “Yeah, he’s not great. I don’t know how much you can read into it, but I am starting to worry. There are a bunch of folks just expressing concern here.” And the main question that I wanted to ask you in this video commentary is, do you agree? Do you also feel a little bit of worry with the way Sebastian Kosa has developed? Because I’ll tell you this, four years ago when he was taken in the first round, Red Wings fans were over the moon ecstatic. Heck, even the fact that he went over Yesper Walstead was seen as a pretty good thing. Like, hey, the Wings got the bigger guy and he was so good in the WHL 941 safe percentage in 19 games. He played 19 games and only lost twice. only lost once in regulation. I mean, these numbers are so good and he wasn’t really able to replicate that the next season in the dub. His starting out pro career in the ECHL and the AHL was not great and then he inevitably became a full-time Griffin. Decent numbers last year for sure. I mean, the 868 safe percentage is probably less than ideal. But now in the preseason with the Detroit Red Wings at 22 years old, Sebastian Kosa isn’t showing off all too well. And I want you to let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. Do you agree with the concern that we have seen be brought up because of it. I am definitely worried about Cossa. He has only 1 year left in the minors so if doesn't figure it out this year he is most likely going to be a bust. Augustine is our goalie of the future.
Anyone still wondering why Yzerman went after a bunch of goalies? They're development is notoriously non-linear and unpredictable, and the cornerstone of any good team. Having a robust goalie pipeline fosters competition and offsets likely delays in developement.
legorocks99 was DEAD WRONG about Jesper Wallstedt. legorocks99 had Wallstedt as the next superstar goalie. lol. Wallstedt has been a COMPLETE BUST but legorocks99 remains silent about Wallstedt flaming out. Instead, legorocks99 relentlessly bashes Cossa. It is embarrassing to watch him go after Cossa time and time again, while he can't admit how incredibly WRONG he was about Wallstedt.
Look at the timeline of goalies Cossa's size 6' 6" or raller. Bishop, Stolarz, Markstrom, Oettinger.
Stolarz played 34 games at 30 yeats old last year. Most hes ever played.
Bishop was 27 before he started for 63 games in 2013-2014.
Marskstrom was 27 when he started 60 games in 2017-2018.
Oettinger is the only guy i can see at first glance that contributed significant starts in the NHL when he was 23, when he played in 48 games. That would be next year for cossa and a realistically best case scenario based on historical data.
Bigger goalies are just different and you can't treat their timeline the same as a goalie thats 6' 2". I mean.. i guess you CAN if you want to disappoint yourself with delusions instead of being knowledgeable and realistic.
Cossa turns 27 in 2030. If he starts in 40+ games in the NHL any year prior to that.. He's ahead of the other goalies his size not named Jake Oettinger. People dont like that timeline, including myself, but it is what it is.
no.
Cossa looked like he's always looked, to me. He's big and takes up space but we even saw shots go right through him. He reminds me of Kevin St. Pierre that we had on Bakersfield years ago. He's good enough to do great at the ECHL level but bring him up a couple of levels and he gets taken apart.
Postoffice is someone they should be investing in while Augustine gets ready.
We need to accept that Seabass is a catch and release.
I never had faith in Cossa after watching that prospect game when he gave up like 7goals in 2 periods. It always comes back to me every time I see him play. I think Augustine and Postva are better than him.
Cossa has never had good starts with Detroit. All the way back to his first training camp. He seems to require some time to heat up, but when he does, he’s a real good goalie. The more he plays this year, the better he will do. He’s just one of those guys who has to ramp up.
The same people lashing out at Cossa now would have been doing the same to Osgood circa '94. Osgood ended his carrer with 3 Stanley Cups and 2 Jennings trophies. If Cossa is even HALF as good as Osgood, that's still an amazing career.
With all the goalies signed and picked some would have thought we'd find a good one by now. Nope. Don't expect better than average goaltending for the next few years.
Not with Augatine and Postova in the pipeline. Plus 2 others who's names start with G. Both of them look really good too. Most importantly, Cossa was not projected to be ready until he was 23 -24 yo. Maybe 25. He was considerred a project with alot of upside. He got minimal coaching in the Q. He will be a slightly late bloomer if he pulls it off. He is really young still. People don't get that.
I dont worry about Cossa because I just know hes a wings goalie prospect. Wont be ready until 26 years old.
another yzerman bust 😭
