Stars Unveil Veteran Lineup for Tonight’s Preseason Game vs Wild | Jaxon Fuder Signs with Dallas!
On today’s episode of Locked on Stars, we’ll tell you tonight’s roster ahead of preseason game number two against the Wild. They continue to shuffle line combinations up front and some exciting news from a member of the Dallas Stars prospect games. Your Locked On Stars, your daily podcast on the Dallas Stars, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Howdy stars fans. I’m Joey Ericson, former producer 105 through the fan. And welcome to a Tuesday edition of Lock On Stars, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every single day. And if you could not already have heard, yes, I’m currently inside an ice rink, the super rink in Blaine, Minnesota. The Corpus Christie ice race are practicing currently. So, we’re going to rip off a podcast. I apologize for any of the sound effects of pucks hitting glass and all that good stuff as well. But, we got preseason action once again tonight. Dallas Stars taking on the Minnesota Wild at the American Airlines Center. Puck drop is at 7:00. And this is going to be a great game for those of you that are going to go to downtown Dallas and get a chance to see the Stars in action for the first time, maybe the second time if you went the other night against St. Louis. but a veteran heavy lineup for the Stars. So, they’re going to trot out some of their big boys, which is really, really exciting. And we get our first real look of maybe a new uh era of Dallas Stars hockey. Uh it it’s not, of course, the entire entire roster, but we’ll go ahead and and kind of dive into the line combinations and uh what we can expect tonight against the Wild. But here is your preseason roster. We’ll start with the Ford. So Jamie Ben, Cole Lynn, Jason Robertson, Rope Hints, Harrison Scott, Justin Erle, Ardam Schlane, Cross Heinus, that is a Dallas, Texas native, which is really, really cool. He’ll become the second player actually that was born in DFW to suit up in a Dallas Stars uniform for a game. The other was Stefon Nason, who currently has played with the New Jersey Devils over the last couple seasons. So Heinus will suit up. Adam N. Then you have Tyler Sean, Matt Duchain, and Miko Rantin. On the back end, you have Mera Hastinan. Pretty much the entire defensive core outside of Lean Bishell. Mirror Hkin, Mules Lungquist, Eelindell, Trey Taylor. So, it’ be really cool to see him play um alongside some of the big boys for the Stars. I think this is maybe uh a try out, so to speak. Um just to get his feet wet playing with some um guys that have NHL time and experience in the NHL. Uh, I didn’t want to be too hasty with um some of my predictions on Trey Taylor after the the prospect games against Detroit, but I think he has potential to to crack an NHL lineup someday in the future. Uh, Elia Labouchkin and Thomas Harley will also be a part of the defense tonight. And then Jakeer and Ben Cros, so Jake got expected to see some action um against the Wild. So really, really good stuff um on the roster. Um and uh for those of you going out to the AAC uh to get a chance to to see uh see some of the big faces and names of Dallas. Um but here were some of the lines from this morning. You had Jason Robertson with Roe Hansen ranting in. So a top line maybe some of you expected to see this season. We’ll be out there together tonight. Um you have Matt Duchain. You got Jamie Ben and Sean. You have Scott between Ern and Lynn. And you got Schla Erdle and Heinus um on the back end. pretty much what we are accustomed to seeing or at least what we expect. Lindell, Hastenan, then you have Thomas Harley Lungquist and then it’s Trey Taylor and uh actually Labouchkin as your uh third pair here um tonight for Dallas. So, some really interesting stuff. So you you sort of have your your top six and this is a top six we could see for Dallas on opening night with hence ranching and robo D to Shane Ben Sean and then your your bottom six is some guys that you know going to spend maybe more more time in the AHL or the ECHL with Cole Lynn who I really enjoyed watching last year um in the preseason. Um had another really solid season with the Texas Stars down in Cedar Park. really like his game. Um, and I believe he he’s had a couple of games in the NHL. Can’t remember off the top of my head if he ended up getting in a game last year with with Dallas. Um, I know with Scovian and some others did when Dallas got into some trouble. Um, but um, he’s he was an option for Seattle a couple years ago, I think, is uh, is a guy you could rely on in a pinch if Dallas needed him to to make a few starts um, as well. But Ardum Schlane, of course, that was a guy that sort of turned heads um during the prospect games um as well along with Jackson Feud, who we’ll talk a bit uh about later on um on today’s show. But uh a good good lineup for for Dallas to trot out there um tonight. and um we we’ll get a a better idea of maybe what Glen Goldson is is thinking. I especially up front since in practices we’ve seen some uh different combinations as uh Sam Nestler um has has tweeted out a few times. We’ve seen Johnston with Ranton and in hints and we’ve seen some really really intriguing combinations. I I think it’s going to be very very fluid um as as we all know. Um, and we won’t really get maybe a a true uh a true vision of Gooson and the coaching staff uh until uh until opening night. Um we saw on Monday, so yesterday uh we had Steel Hans and Ranton in together and then Robo Johnson Bourc um of course Bourke um not going to be in the line at tonight along with Steel. So uh they’re still going to try some things around which which I like. I I think they should should exhaust all options right now in the preseason and um and see if you can find chemistry with a certain trio that we haven’t tried in the past. And as I’ve said multiple times before, I think Bolson is coming in with the approach of being open, more of a collaborative process with Neil Graham and Elaine Nazerdine, finding a system that is going to both benefit the players and benefit the team as a whole and try to increase the physicality here up a bit a notch and just continue to to try to ingrain into the team, ingrain into the approach and really what you know I I would assume hopes becomes their identity is being tough to play against and and and not shying away um from contacts. Uh not not shying away from finishing checks, but also play the puck on your stick. We we talked about uh some of the key numbers in that preseason game against St. Louis. They outshot the Blues. Uh they won 67% of their draws. Um and those are all good things. That’s sort of been a hallmark of the Stars in the past. um outside of the last like three months of the season last spring when Dallas was getting heavily outshot every game and taking on water under Dbor for 95% of his tenure. Stars were out shooting opponents. They were stingy. They were tough to play against. Uh and they could score a bit. They should have no issues scoring with the personnel they have up front. You would think uh the depth maybe isn’t there. Um, but I think there’s a lot at stake for this season for for Dallas because I think if you’re Jim Neil, you’re hoping some of these young guys will step up this season. Maybe this is a conversation for another day, but I do kind of want to shift to this. Um, in a way, when we listen to to Neil’s thoughts the other day opening up camp, he thinks a big part of their season is going to be defined by like the Maverick Bours, the Lungquist. some of these guys are going to have to step up and really be key contributors to the stars this year. And of course, you make a a I think a tough decision to some degree to get rid of a coach that had some of the most successful years in the franchise history. It’s a bit of an unknown. As much as we love Gooson or as much as, you know, I’m uh I’m pretty bullish and optimistic on what he can do, like he is unknown. he hasn’t won as an NHL head coach for the most part. Um, this is going to be the best opportunity, maybe the last time for him to to really grab a hold of a a head coaching position in the NHL. This is a last chance for him to to really prove himself. And he’s got a really good roster around him to make it happen. But at the end of the day, there are still some unknowns. And he’s saying all the right stuff. We’re hearing all the right stuff. Um, and that’s good, but we should be hearing all the right stuff. Uh that that’s the easy part. But when you get tossed into the fire and the games start coming at you, that’s when you got to answer the bell. And I’m really fascinated to see uh where the Stars team will go. Sort of the approach. I mean, the differences with with Dallas this year. I I hope tonight when uh I get to watch, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to watch the first preseason game since I was working a game, but tonight I hope we we get a little taste and it’s a preseason. you can’t take a ton of stock into systems and whatnot uh most of the time, but I am intrigued to just see maybe if there is some subtle differences. Um and then uh we can talk about it tomorrow on uh on tomorrow’s podcast about maybe what we saw, some takeaways. And I’m curious to to hear what you guys saw as well um against the Blues if there was something maybe you saw that was a lot different um from from previous years. Maybe this is something we got to wait a couple weeks in. uh maybe five to 10 games of the regular season to to really get a good idea, but uh I think there will be there will be some things that I’m going to notice. Okay, that seems a bit different. Uh that that feels that changed some maybe that guy’s playing different bit of a style. Um so obviously uh you know the the roster is receiving the words from their head coach um and the players are are trying to execute that um in some ways too. We’ll continue to talk about some line combination uh shuffling uh maybe what intrigues me a bit um for the Stars moving forward as uh we uh get set for game two of the preseason tonight against the Wild. We’ll do that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Lockdown Stars is brought to you by FanDuel. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is making sure you’re ready for kickoff with a can’tmiss offer. I’m sure plenty of uh you know, but uh for some of you that are maybe new to the podcast, uh so welcome to to Locked On Stars. Appreciate uh your support and uh making us a part uh of your uh day, but I am the uh play-by-play voice of the the Corpus Christie Ice Rays in the North American Hockey League. Um and uh every year uh the uh the league holds a showcase um in Minnesota and all 34 teams this year they come here. There’s there’s eight ranks in this facility. It’s really cool. There’s eight ranks. So much hockey going on. Um and for about four days there’s just hockey games one after another. So uh we got three games uh this weekend which should be really exciting. Uh we we swept last weekend uh as well over the Bramas. So it’s just been a great start. Um there’s a lot of new faces too. Um and looking forward to a fun showcase. So sometimes I am very limited on places uh I can record and such not. So sometimes I have to do the ring. A lot of times I’ll be at a hotel just because uh because of travel um and such. So I apologize the quality is is is not always uh uh up to standard um or is up to to my standard uh at least as well. But of course, none of you are are here to hear me ramble uh about the ice race. So, uh let’s let’s talk some more about some of the the line combination. For the most part, I think we have a really good understanding of what the the pairings are going to be at least. I think on opening night, let’s just knock on wood, everybody’s healthy on the back end, Mero Lindell, Harley Lungquist. So, Lungquist is going to get an opportunity right off the hop. And we heard that from go Glenn Golden himself last week that it’s an opportunity for him. He he sees it. He thinks they can be really good players in this league on this team. So Lquist going to get opportunity with Harley and then Bishell Labushka. So that will be really cool. Sort of maybe just your big kind of physical brute uh uh third pair uh for Dallas with Bishell and Labouchkin. That seems to be pretty steady. They haven’t really veered from that at least from what I’ve been able to to see um over the last, you know, handful of day uh days of practice. Now, up front, well, there’s they got a lot of forwards are trying to get in um trying to get into games. Uh I’m sure we’ll have a round of cuts here by the end of the week um as well. So, I don’t know how much stock you can put into all of these. Of course, that uh first day practice, what was it on on Saturday or Friday? Um if we go back and we look at um some of the lines uh we we saw uh Johnston I believe with I believe it was Ranton and hence I’m going have to go back to it um and find it um exactly but they’ve tried a lot and even the other day we saw Steel up there um which again I I I like I think uh Steel for the most part u deserves a chance to be elevated in a lineup. Does does he need to be in the top six? I don’t know. Uh, if I’m Dallas, you probably want him on your third line just to to to to kind of extend that depth. We we talked about the left side being a bit kind of, you know, boring or not being very sexy when you got Ben, Robo, and then Steel’s kind of your third line. You got Beck um as well, but we saw Ben Johnston and Rantin. Um that was the combination that we saw um on on day one, which again I don’t know if it’s uh I don’t know if that’s uh a trio that’s uh going to skate very well and will that in turn struggle for them to score offensively. But I can see where they’re coming from because Johns is a bit of a playmaker. You put some big power forwards around him. I just don’t know if Ben’s going to have the juice to keep up with with a line like that too at this stage of his career. And look, we saw it towards the end um of last year. He was playing 12 minutes a night. And I mean, you’re going to be asking him now in his mid-30s to to try to play in a top six role. I just don’t know if that’s beneficial for him. Uh but maybe putting him with some younger guys will inject some life back into We We’ve seen that before. We’ve seen that other places. It It’s not all just about putting, you know, Robo Hints and Johnston together and letting go and then you put your old guys down the lineup. We We’ve seen um in past sometimes you get two guys that are great together like a robo and a hint and you just got to find a piece. It doesn’t need to be a Miko Rantin, a guy that’s considered, you know, a top 10 player in the NHL. Uh sometimes you just need a nice compliment piece and and maybe even it’s a guy like Blackwell, right? uh they did that with Blackwell in in New York when they played him with Panera. Like it doesn’t need to to be a superstar or a guy that we we feel is elite at his position. Sometimes just finding a a good piece um and a guy that has a skill set maybe the others don’t um and they can thrive together. So I am that that’s why I’m really intrigued like let’s I think hence Robo if he threw a steel up there on the on the right side. Maybe that’s something that could work. Uh maybe not. Maybe I’m thinking too hard about this. Um but it’s not about finding that that ranting in to play along with them all the time. Um you know, and Joe Pvelski, of course, a bit of a big name, but wasn’t the same type of player he was when he was, you know, with San Jose the the five years prior. Um he was a bit different. He had to adapt, change his game a bit, and he was still able to stick with them. That’s why I won’t completely discount Ben playing up top uh or or playing in a top six role because, you know, we saw Pavvelski do it and he played with hints. It was flying and Robo’s not a great skater. Um that’s why I won’t completely scoff at the fact that Ben may get an opportunity because we we’ve seen, you know, Pavvelski thrive in a role like that. And I I’m not going to put it past the stars to to find a way to make it work. and uh a fun episode uh with other uh central division uh locked on podcast networks. Um we we did an episode with Colorado in the wild um in Winnipeg and you know Chris over at Locked on Avalanche uh I I think had a good point where you know as someone that does this podcast every day I think a lot of times we we look at the the nitty-gritty. We always find the things to complain about. Sometimes it’s we got to step back and and be a bit more positive at at times. And Chris, you know, mentioned he thinks the Stars can be one of the best teams in the league. Uh he may be wrong. Uh he may be right, but he also said sometimes the stars just figure it out. And I I I think that’s that’s true. Um they do figure it out. Look at the last couple years, all the complaints I especially I was making um about this defense and man, the roster is not as good as maybe it was prior. I especially after that year with D when the Dumba Labouchkin signings or I guess it was just last summer feels like a lifetime ago. Um oh this team got worse and then they end up being back in the Western Conference Finals. Uh although I mean Dumba Leouchkin didn’t really work because they were healthy scratches. So uh maybe in the end I was kind of right but they still won a lot of games. Uh they still were the top of the Central and they still made an appearance. They didn’t get the job done at the end of the day. still bust of a season. Um I think that’s fair to say. Um but they they do figure it out. Um and now I think there’s maybe more unknowns, but also I think you know more to some there are some unknowns with your head coach, but the roster still still really good and some guys can take some big steps with Bor. Uh you got Lungquist. Uh you got you got Foxa back, you got Beck, um Steel, right? I mean, the list goes on and on of of guys that uh can can hopefully do some big things. And looking forward to tonight, um seeing Branson and Hint and Robo again together. Um let’s face it, they they’re probably going to look like one of the the better lines in the game. They they’re they should they should be their best players um um tonight. Uh from what I saw from Minnesota, they they weren’t sending um any of the big boys down um from from what I recall. Um there’s some fun prospects to look at. Uh but uh no no nobody really of of status I would say uh that the Wild are are traveling down to the AAC here um tonight. But uh there you go. Those are just some of my thoughts on the lineup as a whole is there just so many different rabbit holes I think we could go down and and why I think it it is important for Dallas to just exhaust all options. It may not be just the obvious, you know, these three guys are great. Put them together. You know, find somebody that complements them that has a different skill set that, you know, isn’t a top six forward, but can in a in a certain role can be productive. Um, and I think that’s what Ben goes is going to try to do. I mean, I think it’s maybe what we we’ve seen a bit here um in the first, you know, what five, six days of, uh, of practice um, in training camp. Okay. Uh some exciting news actually uh today was um announced a certain player from the NHL Prospect Games actually end up signing an entry- level contract with the Dallas Stars. So we’ll tell you more about that in just a moment. Today’s episode of Lockdown Stars is brought to you by Monarch Money. Jackson Feuder, who was a member of the Dallas Stars Prospect Games against the Detroit Red Wings what, uh, just over a week ago now. Um, has signed an entry-level contract, a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. So, uh, this is awesome to see. He’s 19 years of age. He’s a really cool story. um as well. He plays um he actually played in the what is the equivalent I would say of the NHL uh in in um in in BC, British Columbia. So he played in the BCHL um for a number of seasons uh before uh uh making um an appearance in the Western Hockey League last year with the Red Deer Rebels. Um he totaled 26 points in 46 regular season. Um his 91 penalty minutes with Red Deer led all WHO rookies and ranked second on his team. Um it also says he was honored with the Red Deers’s Darcy Robertson award which is given out to the team’s most underrated player um each year. He’s 61 uh 6′ 171 pounds. He scored a couple beautiful goals um during the uh the prospect games. Um had an assist as well. I spent five seasons in the BCHL with the River Kings and Cranbrook Bucks uh prior to making his WHL debut. He totaled 37 points in 76 regular BCHL games, setting career highs in 2022 23 with 11 assist and 15 points. He’s a Cold Lake Alberta native. Um he signs with the Stars um here uh today which is really really cool and you don’t see a lot of guys that come from the BCHL and really even in the NHL that uh you know make it all the way and at least even an entry- level contract um is awesome to see. Um, and kudos for him. And that’s what the prospect games to in a lot of ways are um, you know, are for for some guys. It’s not about it’s not about them maybe cracking an NHL lineup. Um, that that maybe be years away. Um, for some of the guys, you know, some of the stars draft picks that is, especially some of the high draft picks, like your expectations are for them to some point contribute to the Dallas Stars. But it does give free agents the opportunity um, to come in, play some games. if they impress then they can get signed um and they get opportunity uh to to play some professional hockey. So I think that’s just really really cool. Um a guy that you know he impressed in those two games and he gets rewarded for it. Um and that’s what uh you want to see. So so credit to to feeder for playing well. Credit to the stars for for noticing it and being able to get a deal done. So that’s just awesome um to see uh really really cool stories um over the last couple days. Um, and then tonight you have Heinus, uh, that’s is a DFW born guy. Um, that’s going to suit up in a star sweater. I imagine that’s going to be really, really cool for him. Um, so look forward to to kind of seeing that, seeing how he plays. So, a lot of cool stuff coming out of of Big D here today. But, um, that’s all I got for you on today’s episode of Luck. Getting you prepared for this preseason game tonight. We’ll be back tomorrow. We’ll break it down. Um hopefully have some fun things to talk about as we get to see some of the big boys in the lineup.
