HUGE CANUCKS UPDATE: BRAEDEN COOTES PLAYING ALL SEASON FOR VANCOUVER?
[Music] Things are starting to shift around for the Vancouver Conucks as indicated by Thomas Dance on his article earlier this morning on the Athletic. Take a look at this. What I’m hearing about the Vancouver Conucks final roster decisions, trade plans, and more. Now, the thing is, The Athletic is paid for material. This article is behind a payw wall. You’re not going to have access to it unless you have the subscription. So, I’ll leave a link in the description if you want to go out there and read it yourself and if you have the Athletic, of course. But all the important info that we need was posted onto the Aranox subreddit. So, let’s go out there and read this here. Greg the Great posted this Drance piece onto our Conucks and the top comment is a quote from Thomas Dance in the piece in regards to Vancouver Conucks young center Braden Coots. Take a look at this. The internal discussion, in fact, has shifted somewhat from whether or not Braden Coots might get a look in Vancouver to open the year, which now seems increasingly likely, and has begun to hone in on whether or not he would benefit from going back to junior or if he might be capable of sustaining the level required to contribute in the NHL all season. Holy crap. 82 games, bro. That would be insane, would it not be if Braden Coots ends up getting the 82 game treatment from the Vancouver Conucks in year 1 as an 18year-old? I mean, okay, we see young guys take that route all the time, but they’re usually like first overall, second overall picks, or if they actually do make the team full-time right away. Sometimes they’ll be later round overage picks. Braden Coots was 15th overall and he’s only 18. Now, the Vancouver Conucks are having internal discussions as to whether or not this guy could actually be a fulltime Kuck now. Oh my goodness. Let’s take a look at some of the replies here. Notorious Bit Tree went out there and said, “Damn, I thought he earned his nine games, but if he stays and contributes the whole season, what an amazing draft steal that would be.” I think it’s unlikely he stays that long, but hopefully I’m wrong. Another reply from Johnny Lauren says, “Yeah, I think the majority of people here agree. Braden Coots has earned the nineame look and they’re wary about him staying for the full 82 game schedule. Whatever management decides I’m on board with. This current regime has demonstrated they know how to develop and the best course of development for each player. Look at our young guys and we can see that Laramaki, DPD, Baines, Carlson, Ratu, Kudriadsv, etc. Coaches are not putting guys into roles they’re not ready for. They’re given a taste to show them what they need to do to make it. And management brought in other young guys like Mancini who compete and make earning a spot in the lineup a challenge. The organization seems to be working towards the same goal. whether in Abbey or Vancouver. If Coots isn’t ready, I have no doubt the coaching staff will tell him directly what he needs to work on and have a plan in place on somehow getting him to compete at the NHL level sooner rather than later. And here’s the thing, I think a lot of people are strung up on the idea of contract years because if he does stay nine games and he plays well enough to justify giving him a 10th, automatically the first year of that entry- level contract is burnt. And I think a lot of Canucks fans would prefer for the Canucks not to do that if their plan is not to have Coots as an 82game guy. Let’s say he goes the Daniel Sprung route. Sprung, might I remind you, was a second round pick by Pittsburgh back in 2015, who ended up making the Pittsburgh Penguins for 18 games the year after he got drafted. Now, he got sent back to junior after those 18 games, which is kind of why a lot of folks feel that the Penguins rushed him. Like, this guy was a second round draft pick, playing 18 games, burning off the ELC year that he got in his first season after being drafted. But, it’s a possibility here for Coots, too. If he plays nine games and he’s good enough to get the 10th and then he plays a little bit more after that, the Vancouver Conucks can send him down at any point back to the dub if they feel that he is starting to fizzle out a little bit. Folks would be difficult with the year that it burns off of his ELC, but it is an idea that you can think of. Here’s what Kucks person responded in the comment section of this Aranox thread. I think the likelihood is between 9 to 30 games with Vancouver. Young players can hit a wall later in the season, but having him be a middle six center as long as he’s playing like one is probably the goal. But Kenny Logan says burning a year for an extra 20 games seems idiotic. But then another response from Kucks person says except if you think it helps his development. Plus, burning a year means you can extend a long-term second contract a year early and potentially lower the cap hit because he might not have even popped yet. And that is another interesting way to look at it. Another reply says, “If the guy is NHL ready, stunting his growth for an extra year of cost control, that’s idiotic.” It’s all going to boil down to how the Canucks evaluate it after all. But seriously, the guy has been so good in the preeason, so capable. He plays with pace. He plays with offensive intensity. He makes things happen. He’s 18 years old and he was a 15th overall pick. He’s more than earned the nine games at this point. And if he continues to play as well in those nine games as he’s played in this preeason so far, then I could honestly get on board with burning a year of that ELC as long as he’s ready. Don’t rush him. Don’t force him to be in that spot. But if he makes Vancouver’s job all the more difficult in sending him down, then that’s what you want to see. And I do kind of agree with that other talking point that we just read about as well. Like, hey, if you burn a year off the ELC sooner, then you can probably sign him to an extension sooner, too. If you wanted to go fully long-term with Braden Coots in 20 whatever it is, then maybe there is a chance to get him to sign for cheaper. if he hasn’t totally exploded offensively yet and he hasn’t become that full-on Bo Horvat clone that everybody’s been talking about he’s been the past few days. But of course, the most normal pass would be for him to get nine games period. It’s just the fact that Dance wrote about a full season’s worth of time potentially, if that is even something Vancouver management is thinking about. Hey, Coots is this good. He’s been this effective. Can he do this for the course of a full season and help us out over that full season? All of a sudden, things start to become a lot more real for this 18-year-old recently drafted 15th overall pick by Vancouver. So, again, the article is going to be linked in the description if you want to go out there and read the rest of the thing yourself. A lot of the conversation on social media seems to be, why would the Vancouver Conucks go over nine games? The simple answer to that is, well, if he’s ready, why not? If he is capable of doing that, then why not go a little bit above and beyond the territory of what we expected because he has gone above and beyond our expectations already just in training camp in the preseason. He’s been so good. So, let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. What are your opinions about the Braden Coot story and how he’s developed? We’ll see whether or not he actually does stick around beyond nine games. I think nine games is probably a given here, assuming he is able to sustain the play that he’s had the past few days and weeks into the final few games of the preseason. I think he’s got nine games in the bag. We’ll see whether or not he’s able to get even more than that. But if you enjoyed this video at any point, please click the like button. I hope you enjoyed this Vish Roll and bye. [Music] [Music]

ALL SEASON!
Cootes is the next Sprong?
Nothing to lose, go all in on youth movement.
I don't care about burning the ELC but I do care that he's actually capable of sustaining it over an entire season, because I also don't want to see him just end up sitting and not playing at all.
He'll definately get to start the season with the team. But im not sure if a full season would be good for him. We know players that young can play a full season, but its not always the best option
no way is he playing in the nhl 😂
I say play the 9 games and let him go back down to Seattle to put on a little more size and graduate from high school before you bring him up. For his after years of playing hockey he doesn’t mess up his education.
The question should be, is Cootes the next Bo Horvat?
Cootes will be better than Linden and Horvat
This idea is probably only being entertained because the team is short of legit depth at Center; if he was a winger or defenseman there would be no talk of him warning more than a 9 game stay with the big club.
Baaaad idea. We have no sample size for cootes. If this season is anything like last season every single game matters. We can’t take gambles on a rookie who hasn’t adapted to the physicality of the league.
Calm yourselves, hype-nuggets. Barely any 18yr old ever makes the cut, let lone mid-1sts.
The Canucks finally have a draft pick worth developing properly. Now you will to rush him into the NHL? Not a good idea. Let him get to the point where he’s a full grown man. Beijing able to play the game mentally is a lot different from being able to take the physicality of a full 82 game season. The kid is great now but he’ll be even better when his body is finished developing.
