Luka Garza says Celtics were FLYING at Practice | Celtics Practice Interview
Luka, day one. Um, just how you feeling coming out of it and what did you learn during this first practice? Yeah, we was moving out there today. Uh, but it was a lot of fun. Uh, the intensity was high, competition level was high. Uh, you know, I love practices like that and super intense, super fiery, and and the pace was crazy high, which it was definitely tiring, but it was it was good. It’s going to help us in the future. play faster than whatever kind of teams you count on. This is the point of emphasis this year. Yeah, I mean you you could tell right since I got here that’s the focus this year. That’s what we want to do is get up and down and and uh push the pace and get into actions early and you know be able to you know move the ball around and score and kind of use all sides of the floor uh while doing that. And you know I think think coach said today was you know we’re not just going to play like that, we’re going to practice like that. So that was evident from the way the practice was and the structure that was that was out there. said playing fast can look different ways. Some people hear playing fast and they think just running up and down necessary. No. Yeah. It’s playing fast and playing smart at the same time. It’s seeing the actions. It’s not, you know, just chuck it and shoot it, you know, with 20 seconds on the shot clock. It’s, you know, trying to get into the actions early so you can get uh, you know, get looks early and if there’s not there, then you go to the second action, the third action. It’s just everything you do is with the fast pace, you know. Um, it’s, you know, you see a lot of teams that, you know, get the ball, walk it up. I’ve been on teams like that before. Um, and that’s not what we’re trying to do. Yeah. Talked about studying guys tendencies, learning where they want you to be. When it comes to playing off Jaylen, how do you try to fit in next to a guy like that? How has he helped you get used to the system that play? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think my my number one role, you know, playing with Jaylen or Peyton or Anthony is all them is is to get them open. You know, set good screens, get them, you know, guys are going to press up on them. Um, so that’s that’s, you know, my number one focus when I get into an action with them is is to get them open because in return, uh, that creates opportunities for me, whether that’s on the roll or the pop. um you know or obviously even on the glass. So um you know I think they they’ve all done a a great job of you know kind of finding some connection with me talking to me and vice versa just you know kind of feeling out how how often I pop how often I roll u and then how I like to set the screens or you know where I like to and and the same thing with them is I’m just you know even if I’m not asking I’m watching how they play see what size they like to get to you know which way they want to go off the pick and roll um you know where they want to get the pull up from you know stuff like that. So, um, you know, I just, you know, try to keep a good focus on that because I know that’ll that’ll help the team win. After having such a a great college career, what’s it been like to try to find your way at the next level? What’s that kind of journey been like for you? Yeah, it’s been an experience. It’s been, you know, a lot of ups and downs, you know, uh, definitely tested me mentally. U, you know, especially just with my confidence coming in at such a, you know, high almost and then kind of, uh, you know, getting humbled right away. And uh you know I think it was good for me and good for my career and good for me as a human being to kind of go through that. And I think um you know it’s just all God’s timing. I think this opportunity came at the perfect time for me. I think uh the years that I had before you know the guys that I I was able to learn from you know especially in Minnesota but also even in Detroit. Um just I had a lot of great vets. Kelly Oen you know even Rudy Goar Carl Anthony Towns those guys that just taught me a lot. Um and I think you know I needed those years to get to this point uh to be ready for an opportunity like this. So um you know I knew it was all part of the plan. So, I’m I’m just I’m really really excited, you know, just to get out there and be able to have opportunity. How would you describe the relationship that you and Josh had in Minnesota and how helpful has it been to have a familiar face around as you make this transition here? Yeah, I mean, uh, you know, we kind of were we’re similar in our journeys in terms of, you know, being down in Iowa a lot, playing in the G- League together, and then kind of getting some opportunity and at different points and, you know, um, you know, obviously without you, the main thing through the three years is that there was a lot of lack of opportunity. we had to stay sharp, shape, focus, and and show up every single day with a great mindset and keep working. Um, and and so, you know, we kind of went through that together. And I think we both kind of build up and prepared ourselves uh for this. And so that’s why, you know, I know he’s excited and I’m the same way just about the opportunity to you get out in the floor, but also to do it for a franchise like this. How steep is the learning curve going from one franchise you know, you kind of know everything about? Yeah, I think there’s definitely little adjustments. I think overall u you know the league has a lot of similarities um and you know especially you know I’ve already made a change you know I think it’s a little bit different for Josh but for me I’ I’ve made the change from Detroit to Minnesota and had to adjust there so I’ve kind of been through it um and you know I’m just I’m I’m always just a curious learner so I’m always open to you know new things new you know structures or new mindsets how they do things and so uh I think here is definitely the mo most detailed place I’ve been in terms of a lot of a lot of the things we do is just the structure is a lot more detailed and I I love that and um so it’s it’s been a lot of fun to kind of be here and learn. What have been your early impressions of Joe Mazula and the coaching staff? Yeah, I mean I think I just love his mindset and every time he says something is just incredibly impactful and you know it might be something you wouldn’t expect him to say but it’s something that um you know has a lot of meaning and uh you know I think that he definitely has that intensity that fire that you know makes you want to run through a brick wall for him you know type of thing. So, I’m definitely excited to, you know, play for him and it’s been awesome being coached by him so far. Luke, I noticed Taylor Jenkins over there practice today. What was he here for? Did he did he help you guys? Did he watch practice? Like, what was like having him here? I honestly don’t know too much about obviously I know Coach Jenkins just from competing against the Grizzlies. So, uh you know, that’s that’s pretty much all my knowledge on that. But, uh you know, obviously uh you know, he’s done amazing things his career as a coach. So I think anything he can help anyone he talks to he’s going to make a positive impact on it. But yeah I don’t I don’t have too much knowledge right now. What are your impressions of the same competence early on? Yeah I mean Xavier and me have been going at it for a long time and we were same same high school class you know we were playing against each other NBA top 100 battling to you know me and him in Michigan State Iowa just you know kind of going through uh a lot a lot of battles. So, it’s always been fun to go against him and the level of intensity he brings. Um, and you know, he’s just, you know, he’s one of the nicest guys, too. And then that’s that’s what’s awesome about Xavier. So, it’s been cool to kind of be on his team now. You know, I I hated playing against him in college, so it’s it’s good to be on his side. Um, and, you know, obviously with Nene, same kind of thing. The pre-draft process, we, you know, we lined up against each other in a bunch of workouts. So, he was always a guy that I loved competing against. So, um, you know, it’s the same thing here. every single day all three of us are pushing each other. You know, we all bring different things to the table. Um and you know, I think that’s what that’s what’s going to make us an effective group.

Well articulated man, excited to see him contribute
Garza is gonna surprise a lot of people
If people don't think he has more potential and skill and ability to play Kornet's role, they're fooling themselves. I like the frontcourt of Queta with Boucher/Garza/Tillman/Minott and even Amari Williams. Easy to sit back and naysay and talk about how much we've lost but I'll take the over on all predictions for this team, as constituted.
I’m actually excited to see what he can do. 30 a game at Iowa we need 12 big boy.
He comes across as a smart and confident player and young man. Looking to be a fun season!!
Will give us Al numbers much cheaper and play more
Just wait until the Boston fans see who this guy really is. He has been hidden in the nba behind Rudy gobert and others in front of him. This guy has a basketball iq that is the highest in league and he wil only get better. Scary how good this guy can get. Boston scored Big Time and Brad knows what he’s doing.👍
Don’t sleep on the Celtics development program. They got one of the bests. If Garza becomes coachable and wants to be better he will flourish in Boston’s development program
Luka Garza perfect fit our team special in he's create a SPACING to attacking to the RIM
