We got a lot to talk about from Jared McCain. We talk about him a little bit later. Little woozy this morning. Feeling a little good this morning there. Jared McCain letting us know via Instagram. We’ll talk about him. We had an ether happen in the WNBA. We’ll talk about that a little bit later as well. and so much more. But we do have to begin because Quinton Grimes and the Sixers still have yet to come to an agreement on some sort of deal, qualifying offer, uh, a a a balloon payment of a one-year deal or a long-term deal for Quentyn Grimes. Nothing has been done as of yet. The Sixers are already in Abu Dhabi without him. The show must go on. They play a game on Thursday. He’s not there, but he has an October 1st deadline, Kyle, and nothing has been done as of yet. So, Bri, could you show our panel here what we had projected for the Quinton Grimes situation to come to an end, an agreement here on the show? Derek, I think, is today. Clock’s ticking on me. Clock is ticking for Derek. Kyle has the actual date of where the qualifying offer. Mom was hoping for an extension. I thought he was going to get an extension. Doesn’t look like that’s coming. does not look like it, but we have those are our predictions right there. We’ll see how things play out for Derek today, Kyle tomorrow, and if it happens tomorrow, then I lost. And that’s that. But with that being said, man, Kyle, we’re here and we’ve heard so much of reporting for from so many different uh people, putting things out there. The agent is talking to everybody, just sharing all kinds of information. Four years, $39 million first to Gina from the inquire.com, Gina. Then you heard it from other spots, a DLS partner Mark Stein, uh some other places as well where you’ve gotten that number of four for 39. Quinton Grimes in his camp, they’re somewhere in that ballpark of reportedly 20 to 25 million annually on the contract that they wanted. So Kyle, a lot of dollars. A lot of dollars and he has not gotten any of those dollars as of yet. No. So as we are here, man, and we’re we’ve been talking about this all summer long. We’ve been talking about getting this these numbers late. We’ve been discussing what we felt like he may have been worth. All three of us, Brie talking about it as well. Rich giving his thoughts on what things could potentially look like for a Quinton Grimes deal and extension and all of it. But we never really talked about how we’ve gotten here and why we are here. So, if you had to say to start things off, if there was a fumbling of this whole situation, where would you start off with by saying, “Hey, Quinton Grimes, in your camp, you could have handled this right this way.” Or the Sixers, maybe you should have handled this in a particular way. So, I absolutely think blame lies with all parties to some extent. Everything we’ve heard, and this is prior to Quinton Grimes arriving here, everything we heard about Quinton and what he wants, kind of how he feels he fits in the league is he thinks very highly of himself and he should, right? He works very hard. He’s a good basketball player. Yep. But wants a lot of money and has not really moved off of that. Right. that that 20 to $25 million range has been pretty consistent in all the reporting that we’ve done and others have done all summer and we went the other day through the list of guys who make that type of money and said I don’t know I don’t I don’t know that that’s him I don’t know that that’s him particularly on this team having Jared McCain having Tyrese Maxi having just drafted VJ Edgecom right and so one part of it is not moving off of that high-end range is a problem. Now, on the other side of it, and Derek has been hammering the Sixers on his belief about how much of this is tied to the luxury tax and at the ownership level, right? What I will say and what I will focus on is whatever the reasoning is that the Sixers have to our understanding from the numbers that are out there that they have not come over a certain dollar amount that there we haven’t heard it floated like hey there’s a 4 for 60 there’s a 4 for 48 there’s a three for45 like that type of offer that is the middle ground on the table right it has just been the extreme of Quinton Grime times asking for a lot and the extreme of the Sixers basically saying we’re not moving at all. Right? We’re we’ll take you on the qualifying offer. Maybe we’ll give you a slight balloon payment. Maybe we’ll give you the qualifying offer level salary over a three or four year period, right? But the fact that there’s been, as far as we can tell, no movement or minimal movement off of that bottom line number just creates a situation where both sides have their heels dug in. And we ultimately all along were of the mindset that the middle is where this should end, right? The middle is what’s fair. It it works for both Quinton and for the Sixers. You get some long-term security if you’re Quinton. you get a a good rotation player on your team on a movable deal if you’re the Sixers, but nobody has wanted to move, right? So, we asked the question through the headline, did they botched this situation? I don’t know that that’s fair. I would say no, that the Sixers, just their side didn’t, but I think both sides have collectively botched this. I think the fact that they can’t come to or at least it’s it seems like we’re in a spot where a long-term partnership is just out the window that it’s there is very little possibility of that happening. I think that is a misplay by both sides because I think he is a good player who can fit in on a good team and is not someone who is ultimately blocking guys from playing that does work alongside the VJS and the Jareds of the world on this team. And so to let it get to this point, for whatever reason it is, failure to communicate, failure to meet and match on the numbers, like I I do think it’s unfortunate that they got here, especially because as far as we can tell, not having certainty with Grimes, also led to Yabuselli walking, also led to, you know, they didn’t do much of consequence outside of just waiting for this situation to play out in free agency. And that took opportunities off the table to as we talk about a hole at the four spot, holes in the rotation, skills that maybe they’re missing. If this hadn’t dragged on and if you had real certainty as to what he was making and what you’re doing there, a lot of those problems might have been resolved well before now on September 30th. Yeah. Um I think they completely botched this situation. All right. now because I what you brought up like obviously we have heard the two extremes you know Quinton asking for 2025 the Sixers offering that fouryear 39 million they have pushed back on that being that 439 being their offer but they have not actually given anyone any indication of what their true high-end offer was and you know if you are going to convince Quinton Grimes to give up unrestricted free agency next year you’re gonna have to give him something meaningful and there has been no indication no reporting that they have offered him anything meaningful. And you know, I like to sort of play a little bit more rather than so much this is what I’m hearing. I like to play a little more in the I’m going to do a little bit of tea leaf reading. And a lot of times those tea leaf readings include conversations, but you know there is I like to go to all right what explains everyone’s actions and I’ve brought up time and time again Josh Harris and his hesitancy to pay the luxury tax. Time and time again, they’re prioritizing being able to duck that luxury tax as at the last second if things go sideways. And I do think in the right season, Josh will pay the luxury tax, right? He paid it twice over the course of his stewardship of the franchise. But I do think, you know, they have to, it has to make sense to Josh to be able to justify it with a team that can compete deep into the playoffs. And we saw that last year with them dumping KJ and giving up two second round picks, by the way, to dump KJ at the last second so they get under. So I think if you look at this I think this point blank and look uh again this is teleaf reading but pretty strong in my conviction of it. I don’t think Daryl my currently has the authorization to give you know Quinton Grimes a real contract of significance because I think they need to be able to duck under that luxury tax in February if this is another losing season. And I think the you know the people well then why’ you trade for him? You know, I think the uh I think the um obviously keeping the pick and the $11 million on that certainly changed their uh the way they could proceed here. But, you know, I think this all makes sense. You know, in the beginning of the summer, you project confidence. Oh, he’s going to come back because you want to dissuade other teams from making an offer that you would then struggle to match or at least struggle to justify. And then you wait and you wait and you wait and now you’re at a spot where you know he’s he’s probably going to come back for either the qualifying offer or less. It’s not ideal. I’ve said time and time again that this is not ideal. You know, if you were operating from a what’s best from the team’s perspective, you would want him on like a $15 million balloon payment, assuming there’s no long-term deal, like a $15 million balloon payment. So then more teams would be interested in trading for him because those non-bird rights are more attractive. they can you actually use those non-bird rights to bring him back on your team next year if he ends up be coming here either on a qualifying offer or a one-year deal like a one-year like let’s say a $10 million or $11 million not even a balloon payment just a little bit of here’s a couple million dollars or a million dollars or two to get rid of your your your um no trade clause. I think that pretty much confirms this was about the luxury tax because there’s no actual argument against giving a significant balloon payment that doesn’t involve Josh Harris’s pocketbooks. And it frustrates me to no end. Look, I understand Josh not wanting to pay the luxury tax on a season that probably has a decently high probability of going sideways. Like we’ve been talk, we talked about injuries all summer. In theory, I get that. But just like, you know, getting rid of Isaiah Joe, just like the conversations we had about KJ Martin and the value of that balloon contract last year and this one, I’ve always just wanted him to try to do something to engineer luck and having KJ on like a $15 million one-year deal. Yeah, it’s going to be harder to deduct that luxury tax, but it’s going to give you another significant trade chip. And if they’re sitting here in February and they only have have um Quinton on a qualifying offer and you don’t have that trade ship, that gives you significantly less flexibility. And it’s obviously not a huge uh you know, it’s not a a it’s not a guarantee that you would even be able to use that as a trade ship, but you you’re giving a chance. You’re giving yourself a chance. It’s the difference between having a chance and not having a chance. It’s engineering luck. And if it Josh has to risk the luxury tax for it, he has time and time again showed that he is not willing to make that payment to engineer luck. We brought this up with Kaminga, but I think it was the um you know them signing him to like that that that that contract was going to cost him like $70 million or something like that in luxury tax payments. And they don’t even really like Kaminga, right? Like they want him as a benched him outright and they’re willing to pay $70 million to basically enhance the value of their trade ship. And here again, if I’m wrong, like everyone at the organization, like I’ve had the same phone number for the 15 years I’ve been covering the team, let me know. But unless I’m completely misreading the situation, they’re not even willing to like risk a couple million dollars in luxury tax payments and not getting the tax dispersement. It’s just it’s very frustrating. And again, is it a guarantee that you could use that for a trade chip? No. But there’s really no downside outside of a couple million dollars in luxury tax payments. And this is the MO of the team. I don’t if that’s the case, then I don’t like I don’t like the mindset of going in thinking that this is going to be as to your point, could this be another losing season consecutively where they have another down year? Sure, you may not really believe that like you did in the past when you were willing to pay those luxury tax uh payments that you had a championship team, but we’ve talked so much about and I’m sure he’s talked to the people in the front office about what and the coach about what they think that they could do because of what open in the East right now of the injuries in Boston and in the Indiana and how those two teams are down right out of the gate. You have Miami dealing with the Tally Herro injury as well where there’s so much opportunity in the Eastern Conference where you’re getting hung up on this if that is the case that’s going to hold you back from keeping a quality player that you made a trade for at the trade deadline that was essentially your free agent pickup from this summer because you couldn’t do anything based on all the money you spent last summer and then letting to your point Kyle letting Yule walk in the offseason as well. That if that’s the case then that is not good. Now, in my opinion, I look at this and I don’t know how much I mean, look, the agent is out there sharing all the information about the 4year $39 million offer, and we all agreed here on this show. That’s too low. We we all agreed that we felt we’ve started at 15 million and went to about as high as 20 for a contract for Quinton Grimes. That doesn’t get done, okay, cool. And we’ll see what happens next summer on the open market and what he ultimately gets. But that being said, this is a key player, man, that we’ve talked about quite a bit coming in here that is 24 years old, 24, 25 years old that has some real good basketball left in him and could be a key part to what you’re trying to do. And we continue to talk about how they have this four guard rotation, including him. That is a big part of this basketball team. And Daryl Mory has said this plenty of times, including on Friday about where they are with Quinton Grimes, that they like what he can do now and he would be a part of their future as well. So if I I look at this and I I I agree with Kyle too that it’s both sides have a hand in in this whole thing. And while Quinton Grimes is well within his right to ask for whatever he wants, you don’t get to reach free agency at the peak of what you have done to ask for whatever you think you’re able to ask for often. And he did that off of the play that he had this past season with the Sixers in a different role, showing what he can do in another role. But also on the Sixers side, if that is in fact true of that four for 39 and you’re like, “All right, that that is that’s a little disrespectful to the player and what he is.” Now, I think it’s been a little bit more of an offer than the four for 39, but that’s just my personal opinion. And I want to I cannot wait to find out now how all this comes together because we’ve talked about the qualifying offer for so long. As of the last two weeks, we’ve talked about the I think we have all said the words qualifying offer more in the last two months than the rest of our lives combined. And the last two weeks, we’ve inserted now the balloon payment, which we never really thought it was going to get to that. Yeah. Yeah, which is either going to be the qualifying offer which was way down here and some sort of extension going in thinking that there’s a again, you know, if this is the thinking that this would be another losing season and this is the reason why I don’t want to go over a tax there in an apron. That’s that’s that’s not something you want your fan base to to even have in their minds going into a season that’s looked to be a bounceback year after you spent a ton of money last year on a free agent in Paul George that got injured and did virtually nothing in 41 games and trying to pull them back in and get their support for this upcoming year that has again a possibility of a really good showing if if things go right. And if you’re also looking at Josh Harris and worried about that and he’s worried about going over, is this the player that I want to go over the luxury tax for? It’s just Quinton Grimes. It’s not a Paul George, it’s Quinton Grimes, does that do it? This situation has gotten really weird. And I would say it goes both ways on why this is not done. And and and why we are sitting here on the day before the qualifying offer has to be accepted by Quinton Grimes. It’s ridiculous that we’re here. I’ve had just an ungodly amount of conversations about Quinton crimes this summer, right? And you think about it and say like I’ve said this to people who are in the show chat today within our Discord and people talking just in random conversations or whatnot. If Quinton Grimes is not willing to take less than 20 to$25 million a year, I get the Sixers position that they’re not going to come up to match him for basically no reason with no market created for himself, right? There aren’t there is no cap space out there. There is no suitor lurking for him right now that can just sign him to an offer sheet and put him on their team at that type of money. So, you’re not just gonna be like, “Yeah, Quinton, out of the goodness of our hearts, we’re going to give you four for 80, right? But on the other side of it, then it’s like you do have to make some kind of good faith effort for it not to look like we’re trying to get you on the very bare minimum deal we could get you to sign, right? There does have to be an appreciation for this guy has been a at the very least even if you think last year at the end of the year is a complete mirage that he’s nowhere near that player he has been a good role player on multiple teams right was a frequent starter on like a 4748 win Nick’s team previously he is a bench player but more like in that sixth seventh man type role in Alice playing with Luca Donuch playing off of a ball dominant star and was very good in a I’m a 3 and D type guy who beats closeouts, defends a a couple positions and plays two-way basketball, right? Like that’s a valuable player. You can argue about what is the ceiling on that player? How much of the cap space are we using on that player? Can we find a cheaper version of that player by drafting them, etc., etc., etc. But to Derek’s point, it’s like at a certain point as a basketball team, as a franchise, you just have to look and say he’s good at basketball. He would we would be better by having him on the roster. We would be we benefit more from having a contract on the books that you can trade than having him on this qualifying offer. and look at this list of benefits and say the downside risk of offering him whatever it is four more million dollars a year,5 more million dollars a year is nowhere close to what the potential benefit and upside of keeping him on a you know relatively friendly deal over the long term right like I just I can’t see the risk that they seem to see in this deal specifically and trying to, you know, justify it through, well, if it’s at the ownership level and it’s really Josh Harris looked at last year and was like, well, I can’t trust that Joel and PG will be healthy again. You know who needs help if that happens? These young guys who otherwise will get their heads kicked in by other teams every night. put good players on the basketball team so that when Tyrese Maxi sits there on media day and is like we need to set a standard you have people who can help them do that rather than throwing them out there with like GLeague castoffs and 10day players right that’s what irritates me about it is like okay let’s say the season does go off the rails that doesn’t mean you just throw the year away from a competitive and a developmental standpoint for young guys who who don’t want to put through that. You want to play consistent competitive basketball and in any version of this season, Quinton Grimes, I believe, will help them do that. All right, folks. We want to take more thoughts, but it’s going to be lengthy, so we need to get to that break. So, let’s take that first pause here, and when we come back, Derek has more thoughts. We’ll lay those thoughts out. We’ll tell you about how you can get Derek’s new hat right here that he’s sporting on the show. We’ll tell you about that and so much more as we hang out with you on this Tuesday. Two days away from the start of the preseason schedule and one day away from Quinton Grimes and the Sixers coming to some sort of an agreement. We’ll find out. Decision day tomorrow, October 1st. So, like another reason that I think it’s pretty obvious that this is a luxury tax issue. It’s been brought up multiple times by multiple different reporters that they tried to move on from Kelly and Andre over the summer. weren’t willing to pay, you know, attached draft pick compensation to do so. But just the fact that they were trying to move them to clear room for this Quinton Grimes contract tells you because, you know, a lot of times in the reporting, you know, because you’re it’s they’re trying to put the most generous spin on it possible, but a lot of times it’s brought up as a second apron issue. They want to have room under the Second Apron. They are $22 million below the Second Apron next year. Unless they literally gave Quinton exactly what he was asking for, they don’t need to clear any salary to do that. Like if it actually had a middle ground of let’s say 15, 16, even $17 million a year, you could fit that very comfortably under that second apron. If they are looking to move Kelly and Andre, it is because they are trying to fit under a different line that they have imposed upon themselves. Which line would that be? Likely the luxury tax line. So again, if they have plenty of room under the second apron and there’s no like significant balloon payment, to me that is just proof that it is a luxury tax issue. And again, like it is a like there is um what was the second point I wanted to get to? I definitely had a second point. We waited too long. That that ad read was just way too long. Oh, my bad. Those ad reads were exactly as long as they should be. No, I know it’s my brain that’s not working, but I need someone to blame it on. and it doesn’t, you know, well, let me just ask you this off of that though cuz we’ve talked about 15 16 17 somewhere in that range. What if it’s that Quinton Grimes and his representation are just simply stuck on that 2025 number and that’s we don’t know because all we all they’re saying is 44 for 39 publicly and that the reports are also that they want somewhere in that 20 to 25. If it’s that 15 16 17 then Quinton Grimes and his representation they need to look themselves in the mirror because I think that’s a pretty good deal. But we we just have no information. We have no reporting that it is that’s the case. And here’s why I’m so much more focused on the Sixers aspect of it because it impacts the Sixers. Like their unwillingness to spend a luxury tax is something we’ve said time and time again. Well, they will burn these assets. And again, they’re not it’s not burning assets like the Clangelo regime. That was a masterclass in burning assets. But when you’re saying, “Oh, this this is actually the point that I wanted to get to to Kyle’s point earlier of him being like,”Well, I understand not wanting to pay the tax on a team that may not be a true contender, but you need help.” And he brought up for this year for Tyrese and Jared and whatnot. You need help long term. If Joel beat and Paul George cannot be healthy consistently, then yeah, you might not contend this year, but you need to find ways to manufacture assets for future years. You need to create ways to get long-term contributors on this team. Quinton Grimes at like let’s say a 13 to$16 million contract because I think that’s a reasonable range for him on a multi-year deal is one of your few pathways towards having a positive trade ship. Positive trade ship because he’s a 24y old who’s a good player. Positive trade ship because it’s matching matching salary in a trade. You cannot continue to burn these things and still have the assets left to go out there and rebuild if you need to rebuild. And if they’re only looking at this from a well, it’s a it’s a luxury tax issue on a down year or at least a year that we don’t know is going to be good. I think that’s missing missing the forest for the trees. And it is so incredibly frustrating to be sitting here talking about this time and time again. Like I said, you need to find a way to infuse this team with positive value assets. It’s very tough to do that in a luxury taxed second apron NBA when you’re building a team around three stars. And look, Daryl Mory, this is why I’m not willing to let I said at the top, I’m not convinced Daryl my actually has the authority or the authorization to give him a contract of significance. I don’t let Daryl my off the hook though because this is the pathway you go down when you choose to sign a third Max player in Paul George. There are consequences to that. I think Josh Harris and his $10 billion value or net worth should be able to buy you out of that. this this self-imposed luxury tax restriction is entirely, you know, driven by them themselves. But this is, you know, you know, the owner that you’re operating under and this is the consequence to a max contract just not working out. Yeah, I I think that that hits the nail on the head, Derek. Right. It’s Thank you for getting me back on track. It took me a minute, but I just had to clear some stuff out of the teammates. It’s one thing to not want to sign him to this deal, but if not wanting to sign him to this deal is a result of other decisions that are much bigger problems you have to deal with and a deliberate team building choice. And that deliberate team building choice means you effectively have to let good players walk out the door in service of this choice that has led to nothing, right? That we have not gotten positive consequences out of that. There has not been the deep playoff run. There is not even frankly they they couldn’t scrape 25 wins last year, right? And obviously that’s with the worst possible health scenario and blah blah blah blah blah, right? But you you put yourself in this position and regardless of what you do with Quinton Grimes, you will still continue to build around Joel Embiid and Paul George until or unless one of those one or both of those guys are out of this organization, right? And so if if what you’re saying or what you’re signaling is that your policy is we can’t make any uncomfortable financial choices because those guys are here. What is the point of all this? What is the point of going all in on three stars if you are so unconvinced that they can stay healthy and try to win a title? Then why are they here? Why are they signed for three and four years into the future? You’re telling them, you’re telling the fan base, you’re telling other players on the roster. Our conviction to them only goes so far, right? And I get it. You signed that last You signed those deals in July of last summer and late September of last fall and you can’t undo those. You don’t have a time machine. You wish it would have gone better and you’re hoping for the best. But if you’re hoping for the best is then saying, “I’m not willing to take other chances.” That’s a bad strategy. You can’t you can’t commit and then say, “Well, we’re going to play it completely safe and take no financial risk and not try to keep good players on this team.” That it’s inongruent. either you believe in these guys and you want to win and you want to try to win and you’ll do whatever it takes or you should be moving aggressively to turn this team over and say Tyrese Maxi, VJ Edgecom, Jar McCain, it’s your time and we’ll win 20 games and we don’t care about the rest. Right? Being half pregnant is not where you want to be in professional sports. And that that is where if they’re not willing to pay a fair long-term value on a good role player, that’s ultimately where they’re at. This is professional sports. You are worth $10 billion. You should not be looking at this as, well, we got assets over here and liabilities over here and what’s going to make me the most money? Stop it. Or and if you won’t do that, then find someone who will run this like a freaking fanatic because it is absurd. You have a chance to have a positive trade value. All you have to do is spend one 5,000th of your net worth or whatever it is. Like do something to help the team. Do something. It would be It’s different when it’s like Boston, right? Boston was going to pay an absurd amount of luxury tax on a team that without Jason Tatum just didn’t really have a chance, right? And so they have a downturn. The Pacers decided not to pay Miles Turner in part because Tyres Hallebertton’s going to miss the whole year. They don’t have those are different. In theory, your two guys that you’re worried about are upright and are going to play this year. So, it’s pure cowardice to be like, well, they might get hurt, right? This you’re not some no one is hurt, at least severely hurt right now, right? Just once in your ste well a second time because the whole hanky thing was was risky. just once in your stewardship of the franchise, do something that doesn’t make financial sense. And then you and then you go inquire a guy who reportedly turned down a contract that was somewhere in that deal of 430 whatever million30 some million dollars that uh Dallas had allegedly offered him while he was there. He didn’t accept it. He was going to want more here. And then you give him an opportunity to go out there and he showed what he can do. He earned more money. So he’s not going to sit there and take that same deal that was offered to him in Dallas that he turned down on another good team on another playoff team. Yeah. And he said no. So it wasn’t like he was going to do it again. Also the final part that both of you were talking about is if they weren’t going to be upright, Kyle, as you said with Joel and Paul George, they’re going to miss games. Whatever. We’ve talked so much about, and Tyrese Maxia said this, about him now being a six-year veteran, but still in the middle of that bridge, as he said on media day, you’re also shifting to a new look style of basketball. And it doesn’t hurt to have the four guards that we’re all we’ve been talking about all summer together to now lead into what that’s going to look like to compete in the Eastern Conference and have that be your look and then still have when they are available for the games both George and Embiid to be out there with them. And that is part of the problem just messing it up going into where you have some goodwill coming off a bad year. Some good will going into it with the number three overall pick getting guys back healthy. the new standard that Tyrese Maxi has been discussing and here we are today still again your time is running out Quinton Grimes and the Sixers to figure this out. All right, we take our final pause here on the show when we come back. We got to talk about the one guy who is injured. Uh we hope that he’s not out very long and he put out a pretty funny video. He was having himself a pretty good So, a very relaxed. Just look at the still shot. Very relaxed Jared McCain appears to have had his surgery to repair his UCL tear per his uh Instagram account. He shot it out of Go Birds. He ran He ran with a uh he was singing Sabrina Carpenter. Sabrina Carpenter. He had some quoted little baby. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t sure what social media account he was on. He wanted to make sure he was on. He said, “Is this Instagram live? Is this Tik Tok or he didn’t know where he just knew he had surgery. He was feeling good, but he does so as always.” Kyle with a smile on his face. So, while we do not have any information as far as a timeline from the team or from Jared, of course, because I don’t know if we would believe him anyway from what he had to say, while he was feeling pretty relaxed there in the hospital, he had enough to know that he needed to get on social media to tell everybody what was going on. But, he got the surgery done and we we await now the timeline of his return and what it all looks like. Well, my immediate thought, and I’m going to sound like an old man. I’m not extremely older than Jared, but a good bit older than him. My first thought was, man, he is so of his generation. Like the fact that he looks like he had his procedure, was under anesthetics and all that. And his first thought was, what should I post about this? It’s like, brother, just relax in the hospital bed. At least let the drugs wear off first. just watch some like daytime soap opera like General Hospital or whatever’s going on on one of the uh channels they have on in the hospital. But I mean obviously it’ be good thing that this is happening sooner rather than later, right? Because it you get the recovery timeline started. Everything we’ve heard so far seems to be positive in terms of what kind of timeline they’re looking like, what the severity of the tear was, and how quickly he could get back up to speed. So, first and foremost, we’ll say once again, hopefully he’s getting better. Sending our best to him, but I got a real kick out of just like why does this need to be on Instagram? And I was also thinking of I’m sure overseas in Abu Dhabi, Sixers PR is worried about, hey, what’s this event we got to get Joelle to? And, you know, how do we, you know, deal with all the fans and whatnot they’re hanging out with over there? And then they get a text message or an email. It’s like, “Hey, have you seen what Jared has posted?” Because the team has still not acknowledged that this is a thing that happened. Meanwhile, Jared’s like, “I’m doing it for the Graham.” So, it’s a it’s a very funny morning for me. Jared, if you’re watching this, just let us know the exact surgery and the timeline because apparently the team won’t. So, yeah. Hey, I mean, he might be like an hour away from just telling us on Instagram. So, we we’ll have to wait and see. One of the other things that we were that we did talk about that we hope wasn’t going to be a thing was where was his headsp space after another injury coming back from the one that he suffered last year after 23 games played not playing in the summer league rehabbing said it was a tough rehab but he kept a smile on his face and just kept pushing stayed around the team did the right things in the summer to gear up for the start of his second year and then this happened well from us being in the gym on Sunday before the team left and even on on media day on Friday. While the guys were upstairs, Bri and I were downstairs and we saw him at one point in the gym downstairs and he still had the same normal Jared smile on his face. Now, they had a they had a team meeting and he was a part of it. So, he made sure he was there and uh he had his normal smile on his face and I I think again seeing him on Sunday standing on the court while we were there and he had the same smile on his face. He did have his his thumb was wrapped. He had some sort of brace on to keep his keep his thumb, you know, secure and intact and all of that. But if there was any concern that we had those two days plus this video, I’d imagine that unless something really happened right from here on out with this rehab following, it seems like he’s he’s in his normal self and he seems like he’s at least okay. And the other part is like you said, Kyle, it got it done quickly. And I’m just happy that it was at the beginning of the season before games even mattered where this did if it had to happen, which it did, it happened before the season got underway. Yeah. And look, if not that you want any of these guys to suffer injuries, but in terms of people who have the right demeanor, the right approach, the frankly, we’ve talked about it on the show, his very deliberate thought about approaching mental health and, you know, meditating and all that stuff. He’s someone that goes in very cleareyed and kind of like look it’s it sucks but it’s it’s a four to six week hopefully recovery and and back to the floor. And the good thing about it being a a hand is that at the very least he can still run, he can do all kinds of cardio stuff, left-handed work. That a lot of the time is the thing that guys struggle with when they come back. You won’t be in game shape, of course, without playing, but you can at least keep the cardio base up when you’re dealing with lower extremities. That’s like you got to be off your feet and your legs for weeks at a time potentially. So, I I’m not all that worried about him. It was just a bummer because it comes on the heels of you finish all the work to get back on the floor and then it’s another thing. But I I do think he’s well equipped to put this in the rearview quickly and then hopefully have a good second season. Nope. I mean, like you said, you don’t want to wish injury on anyone. If there’s anyone that you were confident was going to have the right mindset and not let this derail him, uh Jared would be at the top of that confidence list. And it is good that like again, the timing kind of sucks cuz you were hoping he could get uh a lot of work in with the team. Like a lot of what they’re trying to do from a team perspective is put in here over the next four to six weeks that he will miss or at least not be on the court for. So, it’s a setback, but it’s also the right timing in terms of making sure you don’t miss all that many games. Uh, and again, this is an injury that seems like it should be one that has a high probability of coming back from and not just coming back from, but coming back from at the same level he previously was. So, hopefully this is just a temporary annoyance uh and nothing more. And I’m pretty confident in that being the case. Does open up some time for Quinton Grimes when he comes back, which is why you’re like, hey man, might want to be in the gym, you know, might want to be in the gym and get back out there on the floor. Speaking of that though, Brian Branch says in the chat, “Sorry, makes no sense to me to give Grimes money.” Uh, that no one else will, $10 million a year is reasonable for both sides. He is not getting more next year. That is from Brian in the chat. And I will say as part of the I don’t understand I’ve said many times, we all have over this off season, I don’t really understand the qualifying offer approach for him. In part because I’ve seen it go so wrong for other guys. In part because of all the factors that lead the Sixers to say our offer is topping out at a pretty low range, right? Because if that’s where they feel their range is, and again, I take all all that Derek has said today about Paris and the luxury tax and all that is is fair and I get it. But if they’re telling you, we’re not treating you as more important than like a rotation bench player, right? And they just drafted a kid at number three overall who’s going to get a ton of time. Jared is going to be an organizational priority. I don’t know where your opportunity is here that you’re going to get the long-term big money deal you want next off seasonason. right now. Maybe it’s just more valuable to you to take this money, maybe do another one year, prove it next off season with another team. But that’s then you’re we talk about bets, right? You bet on yourself. He bet on himself last season. Y and we thought one, right? At least one in in some capacity. When you turn it into like a threeyear bet essentially last year, this year on one year and then potentially another one year next year, there is a lot that can go wrong, injuries, playing time and opportunity. What what does a coach think of you, right? If you go from Nick Nurse to whoever, does their offensive style fit you? What does the personnel look like there? How do they value you? Right? There are a million different factors that go into that. So, I am not saying that to try to bully Quinton Grimes into taking a deal that he doesn’t want or he doesn’t think is fair. He can think of whatever he thinks of himself and whatever he thinks his market value is. I just have seen this movie before with other guys who I thought were good NBA rotation players who thought they were great NBA players and were humbled by the market within the span of, you know, 8 to 12 months. And that is a harsh and very expensive lesson to learn that you can only really learn through experience. I wish him the best, but I would be worried if I was anyone, you know, connected to him. That’s also why I really think the Sixers are blowing a great opportunity here. You know, this is a a player who like I don’t think $20 million a year is going to be there for him next year. I just don’t think the league is going to value him like that. I don’t think he’s going to get the playing time or the usage or the role to warrant that. But I also know that like $9 million the qualifying offer that is a he could be a seventh man and get 910 $10 million a year. So there’s just no, like I said earlier, there’s no incentive for him to take this right now. You’re not giving him anything to worry himself about. Now, if you gave him like 13 to 15 million, then I’d be like, “All right, look, Quinton, you might think you’re getting 20 a year, I think you got to really, you know, re-evaluate that and figure out what’s best for you because I don’t think that’s anywhere near a guarantee.” That’s when you start getting to the point where it’s a that will be a good positive value contract and it’s also something that would be tough for Quinton to turn down. So, if there really is this artificial limit induced by the luxury tax, I think it’s really, really, really chipping away at a great opportunity for you to get someone on a hugely positive value contract. And you so desperately need that. And it just seems like that’s not even on the table right now. All right, let’s get to a super chat uh here as we uh have Devon aka School Boy Beat saying Harris has crippled this franchise for a decade. There you go. I mean, look, I’m I’m very critical of Josh Yes, you are. I don’t know if I would go that far, but I wouldn’t say he’s crippled it, but like the way I like to phrase it, engineering luck. And when you’re in the tail half of the Joel and Beat era, I would have liked an owner a little more willing to take risks to engineer luck and also crippled the franchise a little bit by bad hiring decisions earlier on, but we have beaten that to death with previous offseason shows. And Bri had a poll up that she had posted on on the uh page during the show uh uh just asking who’s more responsible for the situation we’re in. Grimes, my or Harris, you have a few more minutes until we are are finished here to go ahead and make a vote and let us know what you think. With that though, let’s get ready to get to news and notes because we have quite a few to get to here on news and notes. So, we want to make sure that we give it enough time. We already talked about Jared McCain uh with that one. Kyle has one. I have a couple. So, let’s get to it. You have no idea what mine is. I have no idea. So, one was a good one that Brie threw um at at me and it was it was something cuz because I’m a numbers guy and you know you just I’m a numbers guy and when it comes to when it comes to when it comes to sports, I’m a numbers guy and all that. one that I think we all knew about but kind of just didn’t really think about. Uh Jaylen Williams of the Oklahoma City Thunder is the last player to wear number six currently in active in the NBA right now because DeAndre Jordan not currently on a team and he wore number six with the Denver Nuggets and the uh league was retiring number six for Bill Russell leaguewide. So Jaylen Williams who is still a very young player and unless he leaves or decides to change his number while with OKC and six is not available elsewhere because he can’t he’s the lone number six remaining in the NBA. So I knew that he wore number six from I watched the Thunder a ton but it really didn’t click in my head that was like yeah they retired this number for the whole league. Yeah. So why is he still wearing it? Right. Like why? I understand he was wearing it previously and you know you just wait until but if the point is retiring the number leaguewide I feel like it should have just been like hey man like I know that was your number but also I’m the opposite now it’s not. Yeah I’m the opposite. You you do that until that player is done with that number. I’m the opposite. He he had that already and let him keep rocking out for he I I don’t know that that was his number in the other if that was going to be in other spots. That was the only one that was available for him that he liked with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but that’s his number. Rock out. Yeah, it’s sort of like like like the Sixers with Nerland, right? They retired Dolph’s number after Nerland and they let him continue to wear it and I think that’s I’m okay with that. Yeah, I’m all right with that as well. Well, the question I would ask there, didn’t Nerland have did he like at least somebody talk to the Sha’s family, right? He wasn’t retired yet, but they were going to, right? I don’t know that. And maybe he has, right? Maybe Jaylen Williams has talked to like Bill Russell’s family or whatever, right? But I feel like that’s maybe that would be I would feel a little bit differently if I knew that that happened. I just it didn’t click for me was the main thing that this was Oh, yeah. The last one. See, he’s the other J. Six was my number I wore in not in basketball but playing soccer. Okay, respect the six. Favorite number, huh? That’s your favorite number. Yeah. What was yours? 2 uh 23 22. I wore both. What about you? Mine was 23 too or 13. A real original you two. The Michael Jordan number fairness. I wore 32 in basketball. So again, it’s like Magic Johnson number. So yeah, mine was 20. It’s just always 20 and that’s my favorite number. All right, the other one uh that we all knew about, we all saw it and we were like, “Oh, WNBA star in the feast of Collins just ker of the Minnesota Lynx. Great player. Kathy on fire. She etherred her, man. She lit up league commissioner Kathy Angelbert and her end of season press conference. If you have not seen it, go watch it. It’s about just under three minutes.” She starts her press conference and says, “I’m going to take questions, but before we do, I have a statement.” And if you all remember, she has the unrivaled league for their off seasonason that was very, very popular last year. And they pay the players pretty well. And she went into Kathy Angleberg with some things that maybe you did not know about what Kathy had to say about some other players in the league, why they aren’t paid the way that they think they should be played. If you remember at the All-Star game, the players wore some shirts basically talking about the league needs to pay up and spend more money. She lit her up. Everybody go watch it. All right, Kyle, you have one. I do. Look at that. Look at that. Look at that. Kathy up there on the screen with that Fisa. She’s in trouble, Derek. She’s in trouble. I did say to you guys, I I’m fully on I I understand Kier and agree more with her than not. I do think there’s a little bit of the the Kathy Angelbert with that you’re like it’s a sign of the times because most of what she’s saying is the David Stern playbook when he ran the NBA like you’re not bigger than the league type of mentality and that’s it’s it’s not the case anymore, right? And it it probably wasn’t the case back then, especially with certain guys, but that was more of the mentality is like the the big picture is more important than you. But now all these guys are like guys and girls in this case. They’re like their own corporations. So it’s it’s it is a much different world than a lot of these commissioners and people in leadership positions are prepared to deal with quite frankly. No doubt. Go watch that u video everybody. It’s it’s it’s something. Haven’t seen that against a commissioner I don’t think ever. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Let’s get to Kyle’s news. Pull it up. Let’s see. Taco Bell launching a new dessert called chocolate. A waffle cone filled with cinnamon ancho chili ice cream dipped in chocolate. In other words, I love it. It appears after the real Choco Taco was retired. Do you know who bought that? The Choco Taco is back. Who bought it? I’m pretty sure Apollo bought the Cho Cho Taco. Did they really? I think so. Wow. So, are you Taco Lit? Are we Are you going to Taco Bell specifically to get this design? Were you an original Choco Taco? Oh, hell yeah. Okay. I was not. Hell yeah. I was not. Oh, bad take. But for show purposes, I would try it with the show. All of us, we try it. I’ll try it. So, just to repeat, but you guys know how I am. Cinnamon ancho chili ice cream. Ancho chili dipped in chocolate. I think the original Choco Taco is just vanilla ice cream and mostly the same stuff on Yeah. the outside. So, okay, chat, I need you to sound off. Chat, what do you think? Are you Are you going to Taco Bell to eat the Tacolet? By the way, Taco Bell, as much as we’ve talked about you on this show, Taco Galore from the the the the Mountain Dews and some other excuse you tacos. The Baja Midnight. Get it right. I’m sorry. I was just the Baja Midnight to other taco conversations we’ve had and now this the Choco Taco, come on. What are you doing? You might as well, you know, come on in. Welcome. Welcome. Maybe Taco Bell can become the official sponsor of Overtime. Devon, welcome in. Welcome in, Taco Bell. All phy.com. Head on over. We thank everybody on the television side on the fast channel for hanging out with us today. If you want to continue to watch, go over to allphy.com. If not, and you can’t, we’ll be back tomorrow at 3 p.m. on decision day for Quinton Grimes as we discuss that and get ready to preview first game of the preseason. We’ll see you all at all.com. I’m just going to read through the kaleidoscope of responses we got on Tacolet. We got a hell no from Densley. We got a gnaw from Mark Jackson. A puke emoji from Eugene. We got a Taco Bell greater than from Heda who is all in. Says yes, I will be eating the taco. Oh, it so it seems like mostly no. Mostly no. Which is a little bit surprised because look, I understand Taco Bell is a divisive chain. Most people are either all in or all out. But this is it like it’s ice cream, right? It’s a frozen thing they just have in the freezer. This is not Oh man, there there’s no more like preservatives or any bad stuff in here than you’re going to eat anyone else’s ice cream. So is it the ancho chili? Is that what’s getting people? Probably. The cinnamon. Probably mixing the cinnamon with the ancho chili. Probably. I think that would be I to me this is an easy sell, but I also am much more in on Taco Bell than not. though. We can tell how often you bring them. It’s part of the personal brand at this point, right? Like I’ve told probably three different Have you had the new Baja Blast yet? It’s not Baja Blast. It’s Baja Midnight. Sorry. Yes, I have. It’s delicious. We got to apologize more on this one because we, you know, Mountain Dew Baja Blast. We got it all wrong. Taco Bell, welcome in. You need to get on. Head on over here to PHL. Say what? Said y’all not real big backs. Let me get a bite. Oh, that’s funny. All right, folks. Tomorrow on the show, of course, decision day for Quinton Grimes because it is officially October 1st tomorrow. Derek still has some time. He still has about a good eight hours to go uh before we we get a decision to see if he wins. Very much alive. Very much alive. Kyle has decision day and I thought they would give him an extension, but now that the agent is publicly speaking, I’m losing that one. And uh I would say in fairness, I picked the deadline day, which is just like it is the most obvious one. But no one made you guys pick the It wasn’t like I picked that day and no one else could have it. No, no, it’s cool. It’s all good. We’ll see what happens. It’s It’s all good. We We will find out tomorrow. And also game one is Thursday. It’s at noon. So remember everybody, game one of the preseason in Abu Dhabi against the Knicks is noon on Thursday. So we’ll be watching it and then we’ll be coming on after the show to give you our normal 3M show and essentially a postgame show. First post postgame show of the season uh preseason style against the New York Knicks. So, tomorrow big show, Quinton Grimes watch and also preparing for what we think might happen, of course, in game one of the preseason games against the New York Knicks. By the way, great question from Taj on the way out. Here’s another prediction. Who signs first, Kuminga or Grimes? Grimes. You think so? I mean, I think they’re both could justify either way. Both of these are contentious last minute. I mean, I think they both end up signing tomorrow. So, whoever signs first, I’m just time- wise, you got to pick one. I don’t I’ll go with Grimes, then. All right, that’s where I am. Grimes. How about you? I’ll take Kaminga just to make it. So, it’s not a a clean sweep on that one. Not cuz I have any conviction. One more. Bri, what do you have on the poll update? The final poll results of your question. 31% Grimes, 27% my 41% Harris. For who do you blame for the Grimes situation? There you go. Look at look at Josh. Yeah, it does feel one where my probably would have had a higher share of that, but I think Josh cannibalized a lot of the I also think you spending probably 25 minutes of the show destroying Josh Harris probably played into it a little bit as well. Not that we always have that much power, but when you’re listening to a show where someone’s like, “And let me tell you about this guy, the people are going to be swayed a little bit.” His football team is two and two as well. So there’s that for his football team. Injured quarterback, injured star wide receiver after he paid him the money that we were talking about with all that. He paid that money for Terry McLaren and the football team is not doing so well uh right now. Tough. What a shame. There’s that. Yes. Hate to hate to see it happen to the the Commanders. Yeah. Tough tough break for them. Yeah. Yeah. Tough break. Tough break overall. All right, let’s get to it. You guys know what time it is. The world famous. It’s roll call time. Caleb Martin contract was 3 years/ 24 Million. The Sixers traded Caleb Martin for Quentin Grimes. The Sixers need a Rim Protector. Not another Guard.
Maxey McCain and VJ are probably the only ones who care about setting a standard in Philly
one injury after another!
Even if it is a throwaway year, grimes will be a useful player and a draft asset for years to come
the dude got zero offers from other teams, the level of delusion is astounding
How did they botch it? He wants a lot of money, but the Sixers don't want to go into the second apron. They gave him a fair offer considering the market
Once again the refuse to capitalize by stacking the the team depending on young players. Quinton should be the starting shooting guard
I like Grimes… at 4/40M or 4/48M not 4/60, 4/75, nor 4/80. He’s a useful player but he’s a role player, he’s a 4th or 5th option kind of guy. 6th man on most contenders.
The Joel Embiid extension made no financial sense
Lol McCain already with surgery before season even starts. Almost comically sad. Have to try to be optimistic though!
I've always said give him 20. I don't know why the Sixers are low-balling him. We fumbling the ball 🤬
Everyone saying it’s Morey 😂 . Harris tells Morey what he can spend especially with the tax looming. You all a bunch mutts straight up.
OKC's Jaylin William's ,who originally had the no #6 jersey was grandfathered in when the NBA retired Bill Russell's number across the league in August 2022. NBA said no new players can be issued that #6 jersey going forward ..
Start with the assumption that the sixers botched until shown otherwise. Clown car franchise.
