[Charania] Restricted free agent Quentin Grimes is signing a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, agent David Bauman told ESPN. Grimes will now hold an inherent no-trade clause and enter a more flush market in unrestricted free agency next summer.

  1. Absolute failure from the FO lol, should’ve just signed Yabu. But Grimes will make the bench grimey.

  2. I guess you can’t help stupid. Looking forward to seeing how many tens of millions this ends up costing him. In the meantime, the show goes on for the sixers. Given where things stand in our team building journey.. this is pretty meaningless

  3. What a dope. Philly has no motivation to play him.

    Philly can’t trade him.

Embiid and Maxey are back, so his shots are going down.

Oh, and Paul George signed a max deal so he’s gonna want shots.

And Philly just drafted VJ #3 and they will want VJ to get shots.

    So what Grimes gonna do?

And being an unrestricted FA isn’t the pathway to a big deal.

The pathway to a big deal is having a team have your bird rights, getting traded to where you’re wanted and then being extended.

It’s shocking how utterly stupid these players and agents are. They have no basis in reality.

  4. just awful for everyone

pathetic they couldn’t manage to get *any* deal done after expressing Grimes was their “top priority” all offseason.

  5. I didn’t think Grimes would be this obtuse. This is bigtime jackass level decision making by Team Grimes. We can see what teams will have space next season. What does this idiot think is going to happen? He’s going to have an AS level season and get a max offer from….who????

  6. His agent is so dumb. They screwed themselves royally.  The sixers have zero incentive to play him at all once McCain comes back.  He’s a fool.

I don’t know what people wanted Morey to do ?? Give him 20 plus a year ?? Go into the second apron ?? They only had like 16 million they could give him and stay under the apron.  The guys agent is delusional and this kid is gonna end up signing a oubre special next year and people will talk about how he could have had 3-45.  This is 100% on grimes and arrogant agent. The guy played for 4 teams in 4 years and played good not great for 20 games on a tanking team. They weren’t going over the apron for that.

And as far as yabu goes, man, do very very average bench type players get super overrated here. Dont worry about that, I guarantee this time next year you guys will be overrating one of Barlow, walker, or watford and will have totally forgot about yabu.

There is a lot to nit pick morey over, none of this is it.  IMO those 3 guys are far and away better than a guy whose best offer on the open market was 5.5 million. They are all younger with better upside on better contracts.  IMO morey upgraded yabu already. And there is nothing he can do about a crazy agent who wants 25 million when comp players were getting 10-12 max.

  7. I haven’t paid attention to sixers news since halfway through last season. What does this mean for us? No trade clause is what fucks us right?

  8. The Sixers are betting on their injury luck to finally help them this time around. Genius move.

Nobody is safe in Philly for two years in a row

  9. Unfortunate that he won’t be a movable contract, but at least he absolutely helps us this year as VJ is developing. I understand wanting to be light on long term money since we’ll have to pay McCain eventually

  10. As someone who has opted out of this shitshow of a franchise for the most part, why is this so bad for us?

  11. Grimes is going to play. This is not a Kuminga situation or something. The Sixers don’t have the depth to not play him. The Sixers window, whatever it is now, is in the immediate. They are going for wins. So Grimes will play.

  12. that was not worth yabusele just to get (presumably unhappy) Grimes on a deal that kind of sucks for both sides

  13. No way to sugarcoat it. This is an L. We have him for a year, but then he’s definitely gone, and he’s not a tradable asset per league rules since he took the QO.

  14. What would have been the trade market for Grimes? As much as I’d like to dream about getting back a first or a wing for him, is that a realistic return for him?

  15. I think everyone underestimates how the team thinks about how valuable he is on an $8.75m deal this year. He will play hard for his next deal. If he balls out, try to sign and trade next offseason. If he sucks, try to sign him to a reasonable deal again. Signing him to a 1 year $17m just to be able to trade him during the season makes no sense.

I view this thinking as somewhat similar to the Eagles giving up assets to acquire Dotson last year, or Pickett. He’s cheap and pretty good, with upside. But most importantly, he’s cheap. With the way the cap works now, that is super valuable.

Worst thing for Morey’s original plan when trading for him was how good Grimes was in garbage games down the stretch.

  16. Can someone help me out as a fan who’s been a bit out of the loop on why this is such a disaster? I know Grimes played well last season. Is the consensus that it’s a disaster that we didn’t lock him up long term? Or that we can’t trade him? I’m a bit confused

  17. Cam Thomas had 0 traction around the league, Ty Jerome was one of the best bench this year and signed for 9M/y, Jazz had to PAY to get rid of Sexton, GTJ had a great year and great playoffs and was signed to a barely minimum, THJ went from a MLE salary to a minimum, Clarkson and Smart were buyout players and signed for a barely minimum too. I’d say Morey is 100% right in not overpaying a bench roleplayer in a 18~25M/y contract. The guards market was trash this season, and it doesn’t seem to get better, we have VJ and McCain to play the same role as Grimes, so at the end of the day Grimes was nothing more than an asset in a trade, if he has a salary that makes his value drop then there’s no reason to enter the first apron for him

  18. Don’t overthink it; a bench player who’s been traded multiple times in his short career had a good couple of months on a very bad team and demanded a huge guaranteed contract. We lucked out this time. We get to see him for a full year and if he’s really worth it, we make it happen one way or another regarding a long-term contract. If he stinks, or is relegated to the bench, we lost nothing. We probably paid him his exact fair market value.

  19. Morey signing an aged old and injury prone PG13, and then losing both Yabu and Grimes for nothing due to the cap squeeze will go down as one of the biggest self inflicted wounds in free agency. Just a total misread of the market and cap by Daryl.

  20. Y’all are acting like this is a travesty but we have embiid and PG who are constantly injured and out any day now. What’s the point of paying a player more than a 1 year deal when our future isn’t within the stars we currently have. McCain, maxey, and VJ will probably convince the owner to have more of a bankroll but with PG especially what’s the point.
