Shams Charania:

Restricted free agent Quentin Grimes is signing a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, agent David Bauman told ESPN. Grimes will now hold an inherent no-trade clause and enter a more flush market in unrestricted free agency next summer.

  1. Feel like this is a terrible decision by grimes. Would’ve just secured the 4 yr/39m deal he could easily get buried in the rotation.

  2. He kinda got screwed by ending up in Philly where he was too good to trade, but they didn’t have the money to pay him what he’s worth and now he has to bet on himself on a team where he isn’t going to get the minutes to shine and we’ve seen that go south plenty of times.

  3. a little surprised no team decided to throw him their MLE.

don’t think I like Grimes taking a 1-year deal. What happens if he just reverts to the previous year’s form and is a relative nobody like he was in NY/DET/DAL

  4. Surprised this went to the QO. Felt like him and Giddy had the most common ground to reach a compromise with their respective teams. Wonder if Grimes was looking for a crazy big payday or of the 76ers tried to low-ball him?

  5. He should waive the NTC to go anywhere that will start him, because he apparently has the ability to score 20+ ppg but on the Sixers he’ll be behind Embiid, Maxey, McCain, and even PG (at least when they’re playing) and they won’t be incentivized to play him over guys in the long-term plan like Edgecombe/etc.

  6. Hes lucky if he plays more than 20 mpg. Sixers have no incentive to play him now, with VJ and McCain….

  7. Thats bad for grimes, isnt it? He will play less and in a way smaller role w Edgecombe and McCain, his numbers will dip and his last impression wont be close as good as last seasons finish. Dont like it for him at all

  8. In the article shams said Grimes didnt get an offer until September 24th which was the 4/$39M then Morey offered 100K over Grimes QO to get him to waive his NTC. Grimes countered with a 2/$34M with a PO, Morey declined.

It seems The Sixers just don’t value Grimes and was hoping he would take his QO.

  9. Seemed like everyone was killing the Pistons for trading this dude for Hardaway plus picks but this whole situation is exactly why it was good to get off of him.

  10. It’s an unfortunate situation, but this team can’t afford to overpay anyone when there’s three max contracts, and two of them are dead weight for most of the year.

Beyond that, it’s easy to put up good numbers on the tail end of a season with all your good teammates injured or out. Grimes could be as good as he showed last year, but it’s just too much of a gamble when it’s also more than possible he’s going to play worse when Embiid and PG are on the floor.

This is really an awful situation, but what else is new for this team. It’s probably another season of forced tanking after injuries catch up, and Grimes is going to walk next summer for nothing.

  11. The NBA needs to just get rid of restricted free agency at this point! Next year’s restricted free agents will have the same problems..

  12. Right move on his part, but Philly has overlapping depth at his position. I hope they don’t screw him over this.

  13. Jonathan Kuminga never had the balls to sign the qualifying offer like Grimes did even he posted in the social media that he would beg against him anytime.

  14. It’s too bad. Mavs loved him and he’d be a great fit but ofc Nico traded him for a washed up guard
