Lucas Riel trade rumors are hotter than they’ve ever been. Mhm. Oliver Moore, if you listen to what Jeff Flashel had to say, and you will cuz we’re going to play him later. Uh maybe hinting that Oliver Moore might be starting things off in Rockford. That’s more of a hint. And Mario was at uh practice today and we’ll report everything you saw there. Uh but let’s get started with Lucas Riel. Before we do, do us a favor. Hit the like button, subscribe on your favorite podcast app and on YouTube, all that great stuff. Um all right. So yesterday, Frank Sar Valley basically said, “The Hawks are trying to find a home for Lucas Reichel. It should happen within the next few days when rosters get finalized. Don’t expect a big return. It’ll be like a third round or mid-round pick, mid to late round pick, whatever, his exact words.” And then today, the fourth period, who you can trust or not, uh throws out the Canucks, the Oilers, and Sharks as teams believed to have interest in Lucas Reichel. Um, we got into it a little bit last night in the post game, but after sort of sleeping on it here a little bit, I I I don’t know. I think the fan, the observer in me wants a bigger return, but when you really consider that Lucas Reichel has been on the market for probably over a year. Yeah. And there’s been very few takers, you kind of have to take what you can get at this point. Yeah. I mean, I I I think the the the thoughts around Riel are like like I get both sides of it, right? I get the side of he’s 23, he’s had other people’s words, bum teammates and linemates to play with. Um hasn’t been given an opportunity to play extended time with guys like Conor Bard. And why would you get rid of Lucas Reichel and keep Sam Laferdy for argument sake around? I get that. I get all of it. And honestly, all those points are are valid to a point. I think to a point turns around the other side of when he’s been with Connor Baddard or has been given up the lineup opportunities, the consistency hasn’t been there. the flashes haven’t translated to more sustained success. um the play style I think hasn’t been there away from the puck and and I think when you look back at last season playing primarily with Pat Maroon, Craig Smith um at times with Ryan Donado when he was down in the bottom six like the reasoning was play with guys who are going to force you to to play that kind of style or at the same time play with guys that you’re going to have to if you’re going to do anything offensively drive that line. And there were times where he did those things. But again, it wasn’t the consistency that you wanted to see him be able to do that. Fresh eyes, a fresh uh coaching staff coming in, Jeff Blashel coming in and in instilling the winning hockey, the habits, the style of play that he wants. And I think you look at up and down the lineup, you look at this this roster, that top six feels untouched. Yeah. And the bottom six is there’s a there’s a lot of spots that are already taken up. Where does Lucas Reichel go? Do it’s it’s hard to find a spot for him and feel confident that he is going to show you night in and night out the NHL game that you want to see from a guy in Jeff Blash system that is going to be effective at both ends of the ice, is going to be engaged physically, is going to play down the center of the ice, can be relied on defensively, and also can, you know, add in that that that that offensive touch. And I I when when we got at the to the at the beginning of training camp, I had Lucas Reichel making this team. I I was rooting for him to make this team. And I think as the season as the preseason has gone on, as training camp has gone on, now we hear that, you know, the team is still actively shopping him. It just doesn’t seem like it’s going to work out here. No. And here’s what I’ll say, like you can be onedimensional if the dimension is working. Yeah. If you’re undeniable in that dimension, you can’t be a one-dimensional player for Lucas Reichel. It is allegedly scoring. It is allegedly being offensive, but he doesn’t score. He doesn’t pick up points. Mhm. And like we said it for a couple years with Conor Bard here. All right, he’s he’s learning to be a pro, but the offense is good enough where you live with the mistakes, right? And you still play them. You live with it with Patrick Kane because he was an absolute generational game-changing mega star who thrived under the brightest lights. You’re like, “All right, fine. Is he going to have the piano on his back when it’s time to back check? Sure. But he’s got 100 points, so okay, I’ll live with it.” Right. Lucas Reichel has shown nothing of consistency. And my thing with him is this is now his third coach. Well, if you don’t count Derek King. Yeah. I mean, Derek King, Andrew Sorenson, and Luke Richard. This will be his fourth coach that he’ll be in the NHL with. Did he play under Kowatin, too? I mean, he was in the organization while Katin was here. I don’t know if he played in the NHL within, but it’s I mean, and I mentioned it last night in a postgame show, but I know everybody didn’t see it. The guy who unlocked Lucas Reichel the most, Andre Sorenson, could not do it at the NHL level last year. And even when it seemed like Lucas was going to earn himself an opportunity to get into the top six, he would go and do something like miss his alarm clock and comp and then they have to punish him. They have to, you know what I mean? So, so as soon as he gets and he finally kicks the door down, he has a couple decent games in a row and they want to give him a look. He does something to sabotage himself. And I’ll tell you, like there’s one thing that NHL coaches or coaches of any level of any sport, if you’re not reliable, if you’re not dependable, they really don’t have time for you. If you’re going to be a guy who shows up every day, puts the work in, uh, you know, and just is really struggling or you’re developing a little more slowly than possible than than ideal rather, but you’re doing everything they’re asking you to do, they’ll be more patient. I think they’re just out of patience with Lucas Reichel. And I think they’re saying, you know what, look, if he goes somewhere else and becomes a superstar, great. Good for him. It’s not happening here in Chicago. There’s too many guys who are more versatile, more dependable. And within their minds have brighter futures than Lucas Reichel. So fine, if it works out for him in San Jose or Edmonton or or Vancouver, whatever it might be, good for Lucas. Maybe him and Philip Kurishv reuniting in San Jose will rekindle uh days of old for those two. But I’m not trying to be a a jag about it, but it’s just at what point like how many more opportunities does he need? Yeah. I mean, I I think you look at you look at where this organization is going in their in their forwards group and and who’s like Ryan Green and Oliver Moore are immediately pushing for NHL time. And you have guys like Anton Fondell who, you know, probably by the end of this season is going to be playing NHL games for the Blackhawks. Um, you have Sasha Bu who’s going to going to probably get that similar opportunity. Like you have a lot of guys that are that are going to come in and and and just keep adding pressure to the forwards group. And yeah, Frond Deliver, that’s likely after the trade deadline. Um, but you look at the you look at the group that’s already pushing and the guys that are here and the guys that they that they, you know, want to, you know, see more of or that they feel like they’ve seen a lot of and they believe in what that what they can do. A guy like Colton Doc, like we’ve, as we’ve talked through this preseason, we’ve said like which player is going to like really step up and take one of those spots. Colton Doc absolutely has done that. Yeah. And I and I think Jeff Blashel became a fan of his very early very quickly too. Um it seems like Landon Slagger, as much as we had that conversation, like what makes him automatically it feels like he’s in the NHL group. Like I I don’t I think even with some of the time that he’s missed, it feels like he has that spot to at least be one of the 13 that they break camp with. Um, so you look at Doc, you look at Slagger, their games off of the puck is what keeps them in the NHL. And then with a goal like like Doc scored last night gives you a flash of like, oh, he also has that supplemental offense, right? um Landon Slagger like he’s not going to put up big points but off of the puck the speed the the relentlessness of the forchecking like the habits dog on a bone that Jeff Blashel is instilling that player like him initial uh inherently has that. Yeah. So with Riel, like you’re saying, like it’s just like you’d you’d rather have to rein a guy in in a skill set of like the speed or the physicality or or anything like that than to have to push them to get there. And I think with Riel, it’s like the offense is supposed to be there, but the rest of the game you have to push. Whereas with some of these other guys, it might be well the off the puck, the habits are there. then you give them an opportunity to push for the the scoring or the production or whatever. Um, and that seems like for Blastel that seems like that’s an easier push than it is to get a guy to play that that style. There’s a couple comments I want to address. Uh, D Paris has one that says, I said here three years ago, all of these high picks are great. Does a team have the infrastructure in place to develop them? And then above that, Chris Wah said something about uh being the Sabres. There it is. He says, “This is how you devolve into the Buffalo Sabres territory where talent perf teams continuously send out their top picks because they don’t know how to develop them and get them to play the coach’s style.” I’m going to challenge both of you on those comments because Frank Nazar has developed, Alex Vic has developed. Mhm. Uh Samron Zel’s developed. Mhm. Right. Like there is more evidence of the Hawks ability to develop guys than not. Right. And even if you want to go back to some of the guys you moved out without Brink jumped right to the NHL and was an effective player, Kirby Doc, they rushed him, but he got hurt. He was hurt. So, it’s it’s impossible to analyze his development. Dylan Stro had some of the best years of his career here. That’s a move I It’s clearly a tank move just to get rid of him because I thought he was a beneficial player, but they got rid of him because they want to finish last to get Bard. Riel’s a guy who’s had chance after chance after chance. And and Reven says this was all said about Riel last year and people were kind of berated for it. Now that KD gives up on him, everyone is like, “Hell yeah, get rid of him. It’s another year.” Now, let’s look at Kevin Kchinsky. It right now we’re like, “Hey, give Kevin another year in Rockford, whatever. half the season, whatever it’s going to take, defense defenseman develops slowly. But if this time next year, we’re having the same discussion about Kevin Kinsky, then it’s then it’s an issue. Yeah. Then you’re then you’re in the then you’re in the same kind of timeline. Yeah. And Jim says, “Jay, some players take a little longer.” And I get that. However, Lucas Reichel is being passed. There’s guys on this roster that have surpassed him quickly. Doc has passed him. I would argue that Oliver Moore has passed him. And as you said, it’s not even on the ice play. It’s he’s not showing up for practice on time. It It’s stuff like that, too. And look, that’s a one-off. That’s a oneoff. It’s not like it’s a it’s it’s unfair to categorize that as like It happens all the time. Like character issue or whatever. Yeah. It’s not It’s not It’s just an incident that happened at the exact same time that he was getting moved off of the fourth line away from Pat Maroon. moved up the lineup like like that was I forget exactly when that happened but it was I don’t know Februaryish um last season and it was in the time of like okay please move him up the lineup like like stop like stop forcing him to play in the fourth on the fourth line because at that time he was starting to actually like make some impacts in the game be noticeable in a in a positive light and then it was like okay that like ne that day’s practice the day force practice was like, “Oh, he’s on the third line. Look at that. He’s getting the promotion. He’s getting more opportunity.” Um, and then it then that next game they were on the road and the morning skate I think it was he was out he was out of the lineup and we were like, “What the heck? What’s what’s going on with that?” Like why? Like you just had him playing the third line. Then we find out later that that was the reason. So I mean it’s it’s just one of those kind of unfortunate circumstances of learning to be a professional. was just like you have to be held accountable to the to those things both on and off the ice. So again, like you know, thinking about like getting like trading him at this point, there’s still definitely is something within him that can be untapped. But I think it’s just it I think at this time it’s just not going to be untapped by this by this group and this organization. So, as you and and Greg kind of talked about last night, like Kyle Davidson might be doing Luke Duke Lucas Reichel a favor of like, look, you’ve been around. We’ve tried to make it work. We look at the depth chart here and we don’t have the spot for you that benefits you. So, let’s try and make something happen to where you might have that opportunity. Well, we’re late for the break zone. Let’s hit it. Uh, we’ll come back in 2 minutes and continue this conversation. There’s some good comments on both sides of this argument. We want to give them uh all some air and and talk it out because it is uh it has become a more controversial uh situation than I thought it would be. Uh hit that like button. We’ll be back in 2 minutes on CHGO Blackhawks. Whatever the sport, the app to bet is Circa Sports Illinois. Circus Sports. It’s sports betting the way it should be. Yeah, fun fact. Uh did you know that you used to work at 670 in the score? I did. Wow. That is a fun fact. That fact is fun. You know who else did? So did Sean. I I didn’t. No, I applied many times. Oh. Oh well. You know, I’m here now, so I’m happy you didn’t miss out. We had fun and no money. All right. Um, couple comments I want to get to. Uh, Jim says, referring to Lucas Reichel, there is no other player or prospect that the Hawks have been more patient with. I think that that is in recent memory. Yeah, that is pretty valid. I think Lucas Reichel has had a lot of opportunities uh to come and win a job, to come and win an opportunity and just has not been able to grab it. And look, I like you said before the break, there’s a chance he goes somewhere else and is fine. I just I just don’t see where he fits here. Like at what point do we just keep giving him a spot on the roster? Well, just because he was a number one pick, you know, it was a first round pick. Like we got to just keep giving him chances and giving him chances and give him chances. he’s not proven really anything. I think um to to that to Jim’s comment about like this is one of the most patient uh players that the organization has been with. Think about, you know, 10 years ago when the prospect pool was headlined by guys like Ryan Hartman and Mark McNeel and uh Adam Clenion and you were you really weren’t like worried about their development or their NHL readiness or anything like that. Yeah, you want your guys like that, like first, you know, first round picks, early picks to develop, but you also were in the middle of winning Stanley Cups and being one of the top teams in the NHL. So, the thought about like developing really wasn’t wasn’t there. So, you just didn’t think about it. But, if we were in the scope that we are now and the prospect pool was Mark McNeel and, you know, Adam Clen Dennings, we’d be we’d be pulling our hair out, right? because it’ be like some sometimes those picks just don’t get to that next step. And I’m not saying Lucas Reichel can’t get to that next step. Um, but it just it just seems like we’re at a point with development and especially since Kyle Davidson has taken over um the focus being so much on development, so much on like getting guys to the next step that a guy like Lucas Reichel who has had two seasons in the AHL and parts of three previous NHL seasons to to work with this group and you’re still at this point where, you know, the skill set is supposed to be there. the the the pedigree of being a first- round pick is is is there and opportunities have been there from time to time and you’re still at the point of where you’re saying is he the 13th or 14th forward on this group. You’re like to your point I was just like how much how much more time do you give to that player before saying here’s an opportunity elsewhere. We also need to make room for these guys who like Oliver Moore seems to be ahead of ahead of schedule and you know Fondell when he gets here and AJ Spely when he like these guys that it just it just feels like as you look at Kyle Davidson’s vision and setup and the guys he’s brought in through the draft uh young players and now you look at what BL is trying to do and instill and everything like that it just feels like those players feel more to that style and feel more ingrained in that direction that the whole organization wants to go than fits Lucas Reichel who is not a 50 60point guy as a offense only kind of guy that you live with like it some guys just don’t don’t work with with different styles and and different directions. Yeah. A couple other points from Chris Wah who says Riel had 2.4 four points per 60 in 23 games in 2023 with ethnos kurichev. Nazar had 1.85 per 60 playing with Bard and Bertusi. That looks like negative development to me. I Wait, what? Nazar didn’t play a lot with Baddard. Not a lot. No, no. He was with Bertusi and Tavo and that’s where he’ll remain. You’re also sort of cherry-picking a small sample size of the 23 games Lucas Reichel played where he looked really good and we all had some hope. Since then, what has he done? Yeah. Do the points per 60 since then. Yeah. I again like you you can go you can go through the metrics, the analytics, the point totals and everything like that, but I I would say in that comparison, go player for player. Riel and Nazar. Who do you think has the game that is more set up individually to be successful in the NHL? I’d say Frank Nazar. So, I think I I I think yes, you can have a conversation about who he’s played with, but I think this kind of just I think we got we we’ve come down to the point where he’s 23 and we have a really good sense of the player he is. Maybe there is more to untap in a full spectrum of of the of his game. But I think from what we’ve seen, from what the organization has seen, um, and what what they’re moving forward with, I I think you have an indication of the kinds of players they they want and that they feel like they’re going to be successful with. This isn’t to say that Lucas Reichel can’t be successful in the NHL. It just seems like the Blackhawks are moving away from a player like him. If you listen to what the coach is saying, he’s making it very clear. He’s making it very clear. Uh D Paris had a comment I want to get you too and he basically said I think you have it saved uh Sean. He says what exactly is going to burn down if they keep Riel for another month and I don’t necessarily disagree with that especially if you’re if you are sending Oliver Moore to Rockford to start you can give Riel an opportunity to earn a spot. I just I to me it just feels like they’ve seen enough. And look there they have no this notion that like they just want him gone. Why would they if they think they’ve got a player there or the player is shown that he’s going to be an option for them this year, why would they just try to move him out as quickly as possible, they wouldn’t have been shopping him for basically a full a full year at this point, right? Yeah. Yeah. It’s it’s they’re not just they’re not self-sabotaging. If Lucas Reichel was someone they believed was going to pop and be a really good player, they would certainly keep him and give him an opportunity. But he just has not he’s not shown it. If they did keep him for a month, I’m perfectly fine with that. If they kept him all year, I’m fine with it. Yeah. I’m not It just seems like it seems like they’re throwing their hands up. I’m not going into this conversation saying that Lucas Regal needs to be moved today. No, I don’t think so at all. But but given the fact that there, you know, the the rumor has been out there that he’s been available that the Blackhawks have been taking calls on him for more than just this week. You know, we were going we were going through that this this off season and last season. Um so this isn’t out of just out of the blue, oh my gosh, Riel’s on the on the block. Like I think teams have known that for a while and the Blackhawks have made him available um for a while. So I I like look these were the lines in the pairs today at practice top to bottom and Alex Vic is out with his uh skate cut and Nick Felino had a maintenance day. So imagine Felino was in this lineup. You had Donado Badard Burkovski Terravina and Nazar Bertusi Slagert Dickinson McKv Doc Green Laferdy Moore and Riel were the guys rotating in. Oliver Moore was rotating on the fourth line. Lucas Reichel was rotating on the third line. So let’s say Felino’s in there. So now you have where where would you put Felino? Probably next to maybe between Doc and Laferty and you throw Ryan Green into that mix of more Riel and Green and do you pick two of three, one of three like who do you like who do you keep around at that point? Well, I don’t think it makes sense if you are not going to trade Riel. It doesn’t it doesn’t make sense to keep Moore and Riel on the roster. Like it’s just, you know, because they’re going to give you kind of the same even though Moore is more defensively reliable um they’re going to be put in the same spots. Green is a center good at faceoffs um and is going to give you strong defensive play which is what they’re looking for from a fourthline center. So again, it’s more about fit than do I think that Lucas Riel will maybe eventually be a better player than Ryan Green? Probably. But I just think it’s the need. It’s the it’s it’s the it’s the fit. Well, and and Jeff Blashel has has given us multiple um indications of how that they are evaluating the forwards on the on the, you know, fence. If they think a forward is going to be more of a top six quote unquote style forward, but they don’t have that opportunity for him, well then then they’ll probably go to Rockford where they can get that opportunity. And if they’re more of a quote unquote bottom six style player and they would benefit from being a 12minut a night guy to to work on those things in the bottom six of the NHL rather than a 12minute guy in the bottom six of the AHL, well, they’re going to keep him in in the in the NHL. So, we’ll hear I think we should play Vlashel after after the break because he without saying it has kind of tipped his hand of where guys like uh Green and Moore and Riel all kind of fit um moving forward. And the other thing that we can we could talk about too and someone brought it up in the chat as well, the the fact that maybe the heat is getting turned up on Riel moving is because they have to have this roster by I think the sixth. Yeah. Cuz the season opens on the 7th. Riel will have to go through waiverss if he’s not on this team. So you either lose him for nothing cuz someone will claim him or you make a move, you give him a better opportunity. if there’s no point in putting him in Rockford. Honestly, there’s no point in putting him in Rockford because he’s just going to go down there crush and he’s going to he’s he’s too good to be in Rockford, but I just don’t know if he has a fit and a spot in the NHL with Chicago. So, give him that opportunity and get some back uh from from him as an asset. Yeah. All right, let’s hit the break zone. We’re going to hear from Jeff Flashel next. He talks about all the things you mentioned and more uh interesting stuff about Nazar’s role in the power play I thought was really cool. Uh so stick around for that. Uh, I think we’ve talked as much about Lucas Reichel as we can. I think there’s some people that want to give more time. I’ll just say I understand that and like I said a minute ago, if they didn’t trade him, I wouldn’t be upset about it. Yeah. Um, third coach, fourth coach, whatever you want to call it. See how he does. Okay. But it’s very clear that they have made their decision on Lucas Riel and it is to move on. And I do think, as I mentioned last night, like they’re probably doing the player a favor. Instead of saying, “Hey, you’re our 13th forward. You’re going to be the you’re going to be the Louis Krevier of the forward group. Uh, and we’ll get you in once a week just to keep you fresh or whatever.” Lucas Reichel probably wants a new opportunity, and I think the Hawks are doing him a solid by trying to find him one. So, with that, you were there today at practice. Jeff Flashel spoke. Uh, what do we need to know before we hear him here? Um, we find out a little bit about, like we were kind of talking about how he’s evaluating uh some of those on the fence players. Um, we also learn a little bit more about how he’s going to view the weekend’s games and the lineups. Um, not really a a shock, but one of the games will be more of an Ice Hogs game than a Blackhawks game. Um and yeah, he had a this uh Ben Pope laid out the question, but he had an interesting um breakdown of utilizing Frank Nazar on the power play. So that’s where it starts out. Uh with Frank Nazar kind of in that bumper role on the power play. Um I know he also played netfront even in world championships, but what’s kind of been your instruction to him about and playing in the middle there? Um, well, first I do think there’s some flexibility for him to go to the net front/go line and Bert to uh go in the bumper and we actually tried that a little bit last night. So, we’ll have some flexibility for those two guys to switch spots when he’s in the bumper. Um, you know, I know Mike Valuchcci’s worked with him about watching and actually Brian King going back to the summer just about watching some of the bumper guys and how they kind of support the puck. Um, ultimately my take on on the bumper to be successful there is you have to be smart enough to kind of find the little quiet areas and you got to get the shot off quick and and uh elevated quickly. And I think that’s why a guy like Braden Point was uh has been so good there. That’s why Reinhardt’s been so good there. And then the other piece of that is kind of watching a guy like Dylan Larkin who’s really thrived in the bumper, but he’s also thrived doing it not necessarily in the kind of one-time spot as a lefty. When Kane has the puck, he kind of gets into those real quiet areas, but he’s able to catch and release so quickly. So, if you imagine just flip the side, Connor has the puck, getting Frank to be able to catch and release like that, it will be will be really important. So, um it’s a work in progress. We’ll see how it continues to go. A lot was made of Connor’s just to work, you know, put in the speed and, you know, adding some quickness. Where where are you seeing that maybe different than what you saw on tape, you know, coming in? It it’s it’s a little bit hard for me cuz I think it, you know, seeing stuff on tape and seeing stuff uh live firsthand is is is difficult. But I’ll rely a little bit on the information I’m I’m given from people that have been around here. And everybody says he’s uh definitely quicker, definitely more agile, definitely more explosive, definitely more endurance within the shift, you know, and all those things lead to um him being uh in a situations to either get to spots quicker to get open or or transport the puck up the ice better or um pressure and get the puck back. So, um, you know, part of what Connor did this summer, too, is try to come up with a game plan to, uh, keep, he’s somebody who probably has to watch overwork and has to make sure, you know, I know he he looked at this summer a little differently than he did the previous summer where, you know, getting himself to a spot where he wasn’t going to be burnt out by October, you know, and so, um, all I know is what I see. Uh, he’s been quick, he’s been, uh, agile. Um, he’s been on pucks. Uh, you know, I certainly like the things that I see out of him. I say you’re talking to Dumb Astro before practice. I probably been a tough training camp for him, but what’s the message that you have for him and not not reading too much into the the last week and a half, but also recognizing that it is important time for guys to separate themselves? It is I think the biggest thing um with with Ethan is like I I love his swag. I love his uh his makeup, his moxy. um uh him as a person and those are important things. I think he’s a guy that you want in your locker room. He’s a foxhole guy. Um those things are all going to go a long way. Um I think a lot of times bigger guys, it takes a little bit longer to get going. Uh it’s just reality. I’ve seen it, you know, time and again in different situations where and and so I just don’t know that, you know, he’s played um he hasn’t played to the level that I know he can still play at. Um but he’s played good. It’s not not that he hasn’t, you know, he’s just he’s just I know there’s another level there and and some of that comes from just, you know, as a big man, he’s he carries a uh you know, he’s just a big man, it takes a while to get going sometimes. So, um, getting used to the systems, uh, you know, him and I talked about that like when you get used to new systems, sometimes you’re thinking about what does the coach want me to do instead of just going out and playing and then and then getting kind of coached after, you know, and and that can slow you down, especially if you’re someone who uh cares a lot and wants to do it right, you can almost over care and and instead of just kind of going out and playing. So, I think, you know, ultimately, um, he’ll get another, uh, he’ll get one more game in this this preseason. And, uh, long term, I think he’s a a real good player and a and a real good piece for us. Do you know how you want to use those last two games? Um, as I see it today, we’ll probably have a a lineup, you know, closer to our uh, opening day lineup on on Friday. Um, and then and then, you know, we we wouldn’t play many of those guys back to back. So, not as a lineup on Saturday. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily our opening game lineup, but it’s it’s going to be closer to that. A couple days ago, you talked about roster decisions with forwards and how players might fit into different groups and what might be best for them. Do you see guys like Oliver Moore and Lucas Reichel in different groups when you’re evaluating them or kind of in a in a same uh position? I think they’re different groups in the sense that, you know, one’s a first year pro and so like that’s a different kind of animal um than Lucas who’s been around a bit, you know, so I I think we just got to let it kind of play out and see, you know, kind of again that balance between uh where guys can help us the most come Tuesday against Florida and and what’s best for their long-term development. And and you know, I think that the the the younger oyor uh newer pro that you are, the more that you’re kind of uh you know, cognitive of the fact that, you know, might be best to be in a position to uh thrive and not just survive. What was on maintenance? Yeah, just maintenance. Yeah, just maintenance. Yeah. From that, Jeff loves him some Ethan Delmastro. Yep. And sounds like Oliver Moore will start in Rockford. Yes. Yeah, that was that was what I took away from it. And as he has laid out that he you know how he’s kind of looking at this forwards group of guys that are going to be able to thrive or survive or you know what kind of minutes aotment is going to benefit them more. As much as I’ve have loved watching Oliver Moore this this training camp and and see it, uh, it is going to be better for him to get a top six role in Rockford and basically be on the the Frank Nazar plan of go down there, be a top guy, play with confidence, um, and then if you are undeniably ready to make the jump, to the NHL, then they will find a way to get you up and into the lineup. That’s going to be more beneficial to him playing 18 minutes a night in that kind of role in Rockford than 12, 13 minutes a night uh on like a third or fourth line role in Chicago. And and you know, transversely, like you could make a case that like a guy like Ryan Green could go to Rockford, but he’s more of that bottom six two-way guy. So maybe he is surprisingly going to break camp with with the NHL group and be that fourthline center or something like that. um where playing those 12 minutes a night in that kind of role and play that kind of game is going to benefit him. Um but yeah, as far as Oliver Moore goes, I feel like he’ll he’ll get one of the one more game in there, but it might be the Saturday game. All right, so let’s just project it forward then. So if Riel is traded by the season opener and Oliver Moore is sent down that means your Bard Burkoski Donado Nazar Bertusi Terravine and Dickinson Slagger McKay Green Doc Laferty Felino there’s 13 forwards then you’ve got Vlacic Renzel uh Kaiser Levchenov Delmro Delmastro or Allen I feel like Delmastro uh I mean you just hear it from Jeff Blashel I He loves everything about Ethan Delmro. And then Crevier will be your seventh. Creier. Yeah. So you have seven defenseman, 13 forwards. That’s uh 20. And then two goalies. So that would be 22. You could carry an extra forward, you could carry an extra defenseman. If you don’t want to have to make a decision between Del Mastro and Allen, you can keep both of them. Or do you or do you sign Grizzlick as an insurance policy? If Delm Master starts the season and then really struggles and you don’t feel like Allen’s ready, you don’t feel like ready, then you’ve got Grizzlick there maybe. And then as soon as you feel one of those guys are ready, then you move out Grizzl one way or another. You wave them or you trade them or whatever you got to do. Yeah. Um I don’t know. It’s you could do that. I think it’s how willing are you to how willing are you to from the from jump basically say we’re going young? like are you willing to go full youth movement on the blue line and the forward lines? I don’t I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s they they weren’t really set up to do it uh as full boore as that because if you if you were going to do that, you would need guys that um you would you would need to have NHL guys that you could say you’re also in a roster battle. And I think if you go into training camp and earnestly tell Jason Dickinson or Conor Murphy or uh I McKay of like your spot is not secure and this 21-year-old might take it like yeah that was the that was the atmosphere but I don’t think I don’t think you’re threatening Jason Dickinson with like you might be sent down you’re not you’re not you’re not doing that. So there weren’t that many roster spots actually open, but the ones that were we’ve seen has been a a tough competition and a few players have really stepped forward and and taken that opportunity. So as the season progresses as as we have said and as Jeff Blau has also said, your day one lineup is not your game 82 lineup. No, it’s not set in stone. It’s not this is the NHL, this is the AHL and you’re stuck there. Um it’s going to be fluid. guys are going to get hurt. Guys are going to get moved. Opportunities are going to open themselves up. But I think I think as you as as we’ve gone through training camp and and preseason, you start to you start to see the the coaching staff and especially Jeff Blash like have his guys. Um Del Mastro seems to be one of those guys. Uh Foxhole guy. Yeah. Swag, Moxy, Foxhole. Like you don’t hear him talking about many other players like that. Yeah. I just And If you listen to us last week before the preseason game started and we were projecting the depth chart, I had Ethan Delmaster in a lead, but then he’s served up pizza after pizza after pizza in these preseason games and just like here is the puck other team. I I don’t know how you ignore that. Um and I heard I hear what Blash saying takes big guys longer to get going and fine, understandable. Maybe he’s trying to make an impression and trying to make the team so he’s trying to do too much. That could be. I like Ethan Delmaso. I think he’s gonna be a player. But has he been better than Nolan Allen? Has he been better than Kevin Kinsky? I don’t know if that’s a yes. And if we’re going by preseason games, and you could look as great as you want to look in practice, but the reality is it’s practice. No one is trying to take your life from you during a practice, right? Like they’re all right, we’re doing drills. We’re going to we’re practicing hard. There’s no doubt about that. But there’s no real stakes to it. And when there’s a when there has been NHL competition against Ethan Delastro so far this preseason, it hasn’t gone well. I’m not giving up on the guy by any means. Uh and if he makes the team is telling me that a lot that they’re seeing a lot of good um you know behind the scenes and look those guys from Pekka, Blash, Valuchcci, Sorenson, Davidson have forgotten more about hockey than I will ever know. So I’m I guess I’ll trust their judgment on that. But I I have had I went into preseason expecting great things from Ethan Delmastro when it’s not been the reality on the ice during the games. Yeah. And I Yeah. I think when you when you go in and you’ve seen the uh the games he’s had, you pair it up with what Kchinsky brings, what Allen brings. Like those were the guys that are that are in that battle. I think you might end up being in a spot where, you know, maybe you you you put Kevin Cinsky down in Rockford to be the number one defenseman, the power play guy, um to play 20 plus minutes and and that’s what you want him to try and thrive as so that he can eventually get up to that spot in the NHL. Nolan Allen and Ethan Delmastro play similar profiles to where they’re more defensive guys, more take the body away type types of guys. Um that their offensive production is not what you’re going to going to rely on. So it’s you’re trying to find the right stylistic matchup. And if you’re going with you get down to it’s it’s either Delm Mastro or Allen, it sounds like from Jeff Blash’s standpoint that just a little bit more of the team fit is benefiting Ethan Delmro than it is Nolan Allen. I don’t know if that’s because he’s more willing to jump into a scrum or something like that or wants, you know, has a little bit more of a physical stature advantage than Nolan Allen or I don’t know, just personally is liked better by the coach. Who knows at when it comes down to it at this point, but it really just feels like that is a guy that’s going to be given an opportunity because of the play style and the profile of the player and the role that they’re going to expect him to play. not necessarily, you know, thinking about it as like a video game, who’s better overall, who has a higher overall. You know, it comes down to scheme fit and and how how they want the team to kind of flow and play defensively. Well, I’m looking forward to seeing how Dumb Master will play on Friday. It seems like he’s going to get the opportunity there to do it and I hope he solidified if he’s already earned a spot in the eyes of the coaches. I hope he solidifies that cuz again I like what he brings and we said this what was it three camps ago where we walked in like who is that giant man like that’s Ethan do Master like god he’s huge looks like a longtime NHL player uh he he has got all the tools you want from a guy but um I just have not loved his game this preseason and he’s got time to fix it so you know and again if he starts the season and his ass after two games then no one Allen’s up or Kevin Kinski’s up. Even, you know, Bashel sort of hinted the other day that Korchinski is going to get called up again to play in the game on uh Saturday when it’s the mostly Rockford lineup and and who knows who knows if he if he has a great game if they change their mind. They certainly can, right? Yeah. All right. I know you uh spoke to Landon Slagger today, too. Yep. He was uh back practicing in full capacity. played with Jason Dickinson and Ilia McKayv and seems like he’s ready to go and he’ll very likely get his first uh preseason action on Friday. I don’t think he’s did he play the first preseason season game? I can’t remember, but he’s been out for a bit. It’ll be good for him to get back in. Here’s what he had to say uh after practice today. Exactly. Uh I kind of pulled something in kind of the hip area. So, I just wanted to be be cautious with it and, you know, take time to rehab it so it’s not kind of nagging over the course of the year. So, it’s good to get get that back and then I end up getting sick on top of that. So, just kind of the double whammy. I mean, kind of delayed my recovery a little bit, but yeah, I got back now full strength and feeling good and my legs underneath again and just kind of getting back in the swing of things. It’s kind of more efficient to just do two at once apparently. Yeah. Get them out of the way. So, hopefully I don’t have to deal with that for uh you know, anymore this year. How are you feeling now? Feeling good. Yeah, I think it was good yesterday being back with the guys pregame skate and, you know, more high tempo and just having, you know, even some physical contact and kind of missed that and the one-on-one skates and stuff. So, yeah, just kind of getting back back in it and then I think getting used to the systems, too. So, just getting, you know, kind of I’ve been doing what I can to stay up to date on on video and stuff, but uh kind of feel it out. The active wrestling has gone along the way. Just been watching the games while you’ve been here. Yeah. Yeah, definitely keeping up to date on that, watching the boys. I was at at the game uh last night, too. So, it’s good to see it live and and, you know, watch them go through it and, you know, learn from it as well in our video sessions the day after. Is it is it like watching it live last night? Is that easier than film to see it in action? Uh, a little bit. I like seeing, you know, a live game is always fun to watch and you kind of see it where they had us sit in two up in the corner. You kind of see the the plays develop and such, but I think video also accomplishes the same thing. But it’s good to see it in person. Knowing the competitive nature that this camp has, does it feel like you’re maybe working from behind, missing some time, or how do you feel? I don’t like to look at it that way. I think it’s more I just have something to prove now. You know, I missed uh a couple like a week, you know, I think it’s more the system stuff, getting on top of that early and just staying, you know, ready on that front. But I don’t think I I’m behind or anything. I think it’s more about getting healthy and then, you know, showing what I can do. How nice is it to have a veteran like Jason Dickson, it looks like, on the line that they’re working you to kind of coach you along and bring you up to speed with things. Oh, he’s he’s been great since uh day one when I came in here, you know, a couple years ago after my college season. He, you know, took me under his wing and just a great guy to lean on. A lot of experience and especially playing alongside him, you know, someone that’s just steady and someone who’s reliable. I’ve learned a lot from him and I I hope I continue to do so. if you stay in that role, it’s going to be kind of the defensive checking line. Do you feel like at this point maybe the defense is going to be more your role in the NHL? Like is that something you trying to lean into more? Uh I think honestly my identity is just being a hard-nosed player with a lot of compete forcing turnovers. So I don’t think the the defense limits us to be strictly defense. I think it allows us to honestly play more offense. You know, the more you shut other teams lines down, the more chances you’re going to have the other way. So, I think yeah, good defense leads to good offense is the is the hope and hopefully that’s the plan. So, we’ll see. Does not seem too worried about missing time. Good defense leads to good offense. True. Tell me he’s not a Jeff Blashole guy. Yes. Seriously. Yeah. He’s he’s got that mentality and and that game. And good good to uh good to see Slagert back in in the mix. Um this was, you know, going into this training camp. He was kind of in that roster battle mix and then he’s got, you know, a a muscle strain and then he gets sick. It’s just like, geez, double whammy on the guy. But, um, but he’s back in uh excited to see him see him play and see what he’s going to bring uh to that bottom six group. Yeah, the chat’s very excited about his hair, too. Good hair. Yeah, Jim says slags has great hair. His hair is great. Keep it as long as you can, Land. Yeah, buddy. Telling you. Had a discussion with one of the girls on my softball team this weekend. She’s like, “Am I a ginger?” I’m like, “You and I have the same color hair.” She goes, “You don’t have any hair.” I was like, “Oh, jeez.” Well, go walk off a bridge right now. Thank you. Thanks a lot. You’re batting nice. Which is mainly rude cuz like for a 40-year-old man, it’s pretty lush. 47. Yeah. For 47, it’s pretty lush. I mean, I know a little bit of a Have I ever told you how I discovered my bald spot? No one ever told me I needed a needed MB the player. A couple years ago, I was uh teaching a class at Lewis University and I was in the radio station and they have like a security camera. Oh sh And the ceiling like here behind me and the TV was right next to me and I was like, “What the hell?” And I’m going like this and everyone’s like, “Are you okay?” I’m like, “Yeah.” And I’m like, “Oh my god, I’ve got a bald spot.” Yeah. That happened to me. I was 16. My mom took a photo of me playing with my grandma’s dog and I was like, “What’s that in the back of my head? Am I losing my hair? You’re 16. Oh boy. Yeah. And it’s it’s it’s somehow thin but still unmanageable. It’s got the best of both worlds going for me on top of my head. I promise. Um yeah. So I I think we have a very good idea of what this Blackhawks roster is going to be. Um so it is what it is. And like you said, it’s it can change in a heartbeat. It can change in an instant. Frank Nazar was not part of the team for the first what 40 games or whatever. He ended up playing what 53 last year. So yeah, about 20 23 29 29. Yeah. So and he’s when you think to last season, Frank Nazar was probably the biggest story. Yeah. I mean the biggest part of the year like biggest one of the biggest bright spots uh last season and then goes and has the world championships performance that he did and just just firing on all cylinders coming into training camp and and he’s been a guy that you know you look at and we’ll we’ll talk a little bit more in depth on this uh on Monday for our season preview show with Greg. Greg will be here like Nazar is is coming into this season and I I’m not fully believing this take but I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that he might challenge Conor Bard for most points on this team this upcoming season. Like someone told me on Twitter today that Frank Nazar is far superior to Conor Bard. I’m not going that far. No, but I I I think I think Frank Nazar is right now stepping into this what will be his first full season. I think he’s way ahead of of what people might be projecting him to be. All right. Um, one last thing before we wrap up today. You may have missed the news. Luke Hughes of the New Jersey Devils signs a 7-year 9 million extension. Makes more than his brother Quinn. That’s weird. And my first thought was Connor Baddard, I think I phrased it poorly on Twitter because people are reacting oddly, but like Connor Bernard sees seven by nine and he’s got probably 11 or 12 in his eyes. We need to reframe contracts because with with the rising salary cap, money is going to money is completely going to change in the NHL. Well, and Capriov just threw an a huge wrench in Well, think he makes five million more than Miko Rand. We’re already seeing it. Yeah, we’re already seeing it. Capriov had 17 million. That changes what Conor McDavid probably was thinking about as far as maybe a long-term value if he goes that route. Guys like uh Mitch Mner and Mo Rantin at 12 12 million, like are they 5 million behind Capriov as far as talent goes? No, but it’s just the complete new structure of what uh contracts are going to look like. So, in the realm of Connor Baddard, oh yeah, it’s double digits. Yeah. And and and don’t be shocked if it’s like you said like maybe 11 or 12 like he might like that the standard is changing for player AAVs. So, as much as we’re like, oh, probably this new structure a lot of players might not hit the the free agent market. If I’m one of those top guys and my current team isn’t, I feel like giving me market value, knowing where the cap is going, how teams are are looking at contracts and how they’re getting structured, I’m absolutely going to the to the to the free agency because I’m going to get probably way more than you’re giving me. I mean, think of like what Kyle Connor is thinking about right now. Yeah. is now he’s going to be Kyle Conor is going to make more than than Mitch Mner and and yes assuming that uh McDavid goes back to Edmonton which it I don’t know probably but who knows probably the highest Kyle Conor will then be the mo the now that Capriov is signed will now be the most soughta free agent forward and he’s going to be looking at a minimum 14. Yeah. So it’s it’s it’s changing the the landscape is changing that that Luke Hughes after two years is making just below is making as much as Kale Mar is now like that should make your brain break but that’s just the way things are going now. He also doesn’t get that if his name isn’t Hughes. It’s different for baseball too but I saw this with Juan Sodto. People really can’t process a player making $700 million to play a sport. Yeah, fault’s fault. Just think of how much money the owners are making. Like at the end of the day, there is so much money to the owners and people just like the the Blackhawks finished uh in the bottom three again and their year-over-year value according to uh the the Sport Sportico report today went up 12%. And that’s including with the CHSN uh issues that there were last season. the the value of the of the Hawks went up 12% last year. Like the league is just making money. They are making money. So So you know, now you’re getting it represented in what contracts are looking like for these guys. The Yeah, it’s just um I don’t know. It’s going to be the issue to to make the sodal comparison is tough because of the hard cap. So that like that’s the thing with McDavid is Elliot Friedman’s been saying all along like don’t expect him to max out this deal. will not be alive for a $700 million NHL player. Well, it wasn’t even that. It’s just more you already see people saying like Baddard’s overrated. Even if you feel like Naser will be better than Baddard, like at the end of the day, Baddard will be worth the contract. If you think Nazar is going to be better than Baddard, then you all your stories about the Hawks not being able to develop anyone is out the window cuz no one predicted that. No one predicted that Frank Nazar would be on the level of counterard. And if he is or that he would be that fast. Yeah. Right. Yeah. All right, we’re gonna wrap things up. We’ll be back tomorrow at 2:30. Another practice. Hawks practice at 11 o’clock uh uh at Fifth Third Arena. If you’ve not gone yet, go check it out. Yep. Free and open to the public. Yeah, it’s a good time. All right, we’ll talk to you at 2:30 on Thursday on the CHDO Blackhawks podcast. Give me a second. Tap dance. And while we were waiting for 2:30 tomorrow, hit the like. 1. wow..Reichel was a wasted first rnd pick !! thats terrible.. a first rnd pick should at LEAST make the team somehow, but to just let him go shows lousy talent evaluation.

  2. I’d rather see Greene and Moore start in Rockford. Let Reichel start in Chicago to see what he could do when the regular season starts under a new coaching staff and system.
