[Charania] On Wednesday, Bauman said Grimes’ side offered the 76ers a one-year framework at $17 million while waiving the no-trade clause, and a two-year deal at $34 million with a player option. Both were rejected by the 76ers

  1. Fuck Darryl fuck Josh fuck this org they don’t care about winning they only want your money.

  2. This suggests the team has no faith in Joel’s health and it wants to maintain as much flexibility as possible.

  3. I imagine after creating a “trade asset” with kjs contract last year, they didnt want to risk getting stuck again

  4. People are gonna freak out but Grimes has played a total of three months of good basketball on a bad team with zero expectations going nowhere. If things go according to plan this year he’s not a starter and might just not be very good and won’t be able to put up the numbers to increase his trade value coming off the bench. We’ve been burned by bad contracts over and over again since we pivoted towards trying to contend and $17M isn’t an insignificant cap number. What if we gave him that two year deal and then can’t move him? Either he plays well for us for one year and helps us contend or he’s buried on the bench and is probably very willing to wave his NTC since his career earnings are at stake.

This isn’t the level of incompetence that people are making it out to be

  5. Sixers didnt negotiate in good faith with *either* of their incumbent free agents this offseason.

What a joke, especially after calling them “priorities.” Like, we didnt make a formal offer to Grimes until September 24th? What the fuck are we even doing?

Massive indictment on Harris and Morey both.

  6. If true, seems reasonable. I get it’s Harris’s fault, but Morey is going to botch this. If shit goes bad again this season Morey and Harris will agree to separate. Morey ends up in Dallas or Sac next season.

  7. Terrible, bad faith by the agent.

It would make zero sense for the team to accept either.

Both are just one year $17M.

So why pay that when the QO is already there for one year.

  8. I would have done the 1 year 17 mil for the roster flexibility. They know more than me and I wonder what their angle is.

  9. Jonathan Kuminga took a 1+1 (team option). Do you know why GS refused to make the second year player option or just give him a one year ballon payment?

That’s because a 1 year deal or a 1+1 (player option) essentially makes him a rental. Unless you are an all star, teams usually don’t give you anything significant for a rental player.

Also, the team that acquires him won’t inherit his bird right. If they are over the cap, and somebody offers Grimes 25M during offseason, he would be gone. That’s how OKC poached IHart away from Knicks.

If you just want to make him a human trade exception, we already have Oubre and Drummond for that

  10. I would counter with 12 million on a one year deal. Grimes is an average player but we are without a guard for a minimum of 4 weeks.

  11. Grimes agent sounds pretty foolish.

Surely Grimes could have gotten like a 11-14M balloon payment, which puts him in a much better position for his next offer than the QO.

  12. The upside is that

    1) VJ might really be him and we are talking about his back up

    2) even as a UFA, Grimes still needs the sixers cause they have his bird rights. if someone wants him enough, they will give us something. I think grimes’ next contract is capped at 20% more than the QO he just signed unless we sign him. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, not really a cap expert.
