MLB Network | Brian Kenny BREAKDOWN San Diego Padres beat Chicago Cubs 3-0 Game 2, series tied 1-1

A home run for Manny Machado made it 3-0. That’s the final. Padres’s over the Cubs. And now both clubs down 1-0 in the wild card have bounced back to force a game three. Cleveland earlier against the Tigers. And now the Padres’s against the Cubs 1-1. Dylan CE went three and two/3. No runs allowed. Uh Adrien [ __ ] pitched well for two plus. Mason Miller was phenomenal for an inning plus as well. And then Robert Suarez just closed it out. So 3 nothing the final. Shota Imanaga had an opener start the game for him then gave up that just one two-run home run against Machado in the fifth. Let’s run through it. Go back to Wrigley Field right now. Was a fantastic double play to end the game there. Xander Bogart had to knock it down and Jake Croninworth hand such fast hands to make that turn. So the Padres’s very sound defensively. Tatis a terrific play as well. Three nothing the final. Let’s hear from Dylan CE. with Dylan CE. We have to start with the end of the game. Can you describe what we all saw out of Mason Miller today? Doesn’t get much better. I mean, uh, what was that? Five strikeouts, five batters, five strikeouts. I mean, it’s like a cheat code. It’s, uh, really impressive. Let’s go back to your start. Third start this season where you haven’t issued a free pass. How did you lock in so quickly and early in this game? Yeah, I mean obviously uh you know I knew it was an important game and uh I had a a good week of of preparation and uh you know I just went in with the mindset I was going to battle and and compete. Overall this team has battled all year long. Lot of close games. How will that benefit you in a a winner take all game three? Yeah, I think uh you know we have a lot of experience. Obviously we have uh you know a lot of depth in our pen and uh whatnot. But yeah, we’ve got a lot of guys that have been here and uh you know it’s not going to be easy, but I think we’re up for the challenge. Dylan, thank you. Congrats. Thank you. Appreciate it. Dylan CE terrific today at Wrigley Field. He was a sixthround pick in 2014 by the Chicago Cubs. Here’s what he’s done against the Cubs. Nine starts including the postseason. Now, uh very nice 2.29 RA. Uh big one for him today. Three and two/3. And uh you heard Jesse Rogers there talk about Mason Miller was again unbelievable. One and two/3s. Uh puzzling even to see him taken out of the game, but three nothing the final this one. Three nothing Padres’s once again. Dylan C’s three and two/3 shutout ball. [ __ ] Miller and Suarez finish it out. Quiet game offensively for the Cubs. Uh just five left on base, four hits, got hit by a pitch, caught a break against Mason Miller, but that’s about it. Shut out for only the second time at home this season. Cubs again number five in runs scored this year. Let’s hear from Craig Council. Megan right down here in the front. Uh Craig, just what went into the decision to stick with Shota there in the fifth versus Sroka or or walking Machado? Yeah, I mean look, the result suggested we should have some done something different. Um really just confidence in Soda, plain and simple there. Um I thought he I thought he was pitching well. I thought he was throwing the ball really well. Um unfortunately he made a mistake. [Applause] Did you did you consider going? No, I we considered walking Machado. Not considered Wasn’t going to put Sro in. Considered walking Machado. Megan, just overall, you kind of touched on it briefly there, but just what did you think of Shota’s stuff and his overall command? No, I I thought he pitched very well. Um, I thought the stuff was crisp. Um, you know, I mean, he was he was there was a couple walks, but I thought that was just like giving them their best giving him his best stuff. Um, and I thought he threw the ball well. Andy, just for clarity, was Sro ready if you had gone to him from China like he was he was born? He was uh there was a couple spots we were thinking about him at. Yeah. Megan, obviously when with an opener when a run scores it’ll come under more scrutiny. Just what did you think of Kitrid’s Kitcher? I thought he threw the ball well. I thought they did a really good job in the first inning. I mean, they he got, you know, the Tatis hit is a really good pitch. Um the Arias hit a really good pitch. Um you know, he gets Machado out. Um you know, he he made good pitches. So, like sometimes get really good hitters and they they you know get a hit, you know, what are you going to do, right? He he made good he made the pitches that you’d want him to make in that inning. Um so I’d give them credit for for putting together a good good inning and having good at bats. Far left. Craig, I think it’s up to 24 strikeouts through two games for you guys. Obviously a lot of good arms on the other side, but lineup construction tweaking anything for game three. What will you consider there? Well, I mean the the consolation today was we pitched really well in the back half of the game. Um they obviously had to they use their their you know more hone and uh Miller um multiple innings and and even Suarez multiple innings. Um so look those are good arms. That’s what they’ve done to the league all year. Um you know that that’s that those are tough at bats, plain and simple. Uh just one more on sticking with Shota against Machado. Was the decision based on you what you saw during the start that’s why you stuck with him you felt like okay just wanted to clarify that. And then with Pete struggled does it kind of look like he’s trying to make something happen come to him or or is he trying it almost seems like he’s trying to do too much. Maybe I’m just basing that off his own. Well, I I think look, these are, you know, the first two matchups in this series have been um pitchers that um have done a good job exploiting Pete’s holes um which is what pitchers that’s their job, right? And they’ve they’ve executed pitches really well um to do that. So, um I think they’ve made a lot of good pitches on Pete. Um you know, I think they’re they’re clearly today they made a lot of good pitches on everybody. Um, so you know, it’s just we got to get you got to get pitches to hit. You know, if if players of this talent don’t give you pitches to hit, it’s it’s tough to get hits. Um, and they did they did a pretty good darn good job with that today. Vinnie, second row on the left. What uh about what you’ve seen from this team all year long, from your team all year long, gives you confidence that that you guys are going to be in the right spot going into winter take all tomorrow? Yeah, I mean I think the first two games is, you know, really what you expected in this series. Um, and I think tomorrow will be, you know, a lot of the same. Um, and so I think we’re we’re made for that. Um, you know, we’re going to have to produce more offense tomorrow. There’s no question. We didn’t we didn’t do enough offensively today to really, you know, three at bats in a game with runners in scoring position. Uh, it’s that’s going to be tough to put up more than a single run really. So, um, you know, that’s going to be the challenge tomorrow. Megan, uh, who’s your game three starter? Uh, we’re going to discuss it here. Any last ones for Craig? All right, Craig, we’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you. Thank you. Uh, yeah. Other way, since the beginning, um, like I mentioned, we going out there with a with a mission and we’re just going out there to to complete it. You had a hell of a view of Manny Machado’s home run. threw your arms up. What did that moment mean? It’s a breather. You know, a one run ball game over there coming in clutch and, you know, definitely in the playoff three-run lead is like a eight- run lead in the regular season. So, you know, it was, you know, for us and for our pitching staff and uh just happy for him. Speaking of that pitching staff, what Dylan did, what the Wolffin did, how much did it mean to you guys to see that? Out outstanding. I mean, that’s what they’re capable of doing and uh they had carry us all year and we expect them to keep doing that that way. 31 lead lights like when you have Mason Miller blazing 104 milesPH man you have all the confidence all the confidence in the world when you know when you see that from your side. So happy he’s really in our team. Were you surprised they pitched to Manny in that spot first base open? I don’t think so. I mean they’ve been aggressive. They’ve been pounding the zone and uh you know then that’s how they got game one and you know that game plan work. I guess that we’re going at it again. With Manny up there, how much confidence do you have knowing in the past in those moments? All the confidence in the world. He’s our guy and uh, you know, he’s he’s the one that’s going to take it out there. A catch in the eighth inning, the stars need to make plays when they, you know, games are on the line like that. When you’re able to reach up and and make that kind of a grab, first of all, what kind of a read did you have on it? And secondly, just the the emotion that came out after you secured it. just being aggressive, you know, the way I play and uh a little bit tough at the beginning cuz the route was almost all the way in the sun and came out last second, but uh man, just following that ball, hunting and uh you know, just putting out there what I’m capable of doing. You guys all talked about playing your kind of baseball to get back into it. Was this what you envision? Just great pitching, clutch hit, just Yeah. Yeah, that’s what we’re capable of doing that. That’s what brought us here to the playoff. And uh you know, we repeat that, it’s going to take us to really good places. you really taxed their uh their pitching staff. Gray was probably going to be starting game three. He went in today knowing that they probably have not as many reinforcements. How much does that make you think that tomorrow might be yours? Um I ain’t thinking nothing on that. We’re going to go out there and uh you know do what we’re capable of doing. Doesn’t matter who’s in the mound and uh you know we can you can never trust yourself in the in in a playoff spot. You need to go out there and make it happen. Yeah. So I mean obviously going into the second different from going into the first and that’s something that’s been a topic of something I needed to work on and you know just feeling the feel the fast ball and everything like that. Um that’s something I noticed in the second. What did you notice about the fast? Yeah, it felt good coming off the fingers. Um, you know, sometimes it would come off a little differently than that. And, you know, I’m trying to make sure I remember that sensation. What’s a change on mindset? Would you have to would Craig use an opener instead of you opening the game? Yeah. So, you know, thinking about it more like a reliever. Um, I don’t know if there was like a pitch count or anything like that, but you know, going in giving my 100% and, you know, throw as many pitches as I can. Showed it in the fifth inning. Yeah. No, absolutely. I thought the bat quality yesterday was was really high as well. Not as much you show for it. Again, a bat quality fantastic. you hit the nail on the head ace with um you know Toddy getting it started even in the you know first inning and then later you know a tremendous at bat and then man he does his thing puts a beautiful swing on it to give us you know a little bit of cushion there for sure you obviously it’s the postseason you uh you rode your relievers today what’ you think about the way like that [ __ ] doing more than he’ done Miller Suarez yeah I mean clearly they were tremendous um you know back against the wall scenario. Um, I’m sure we’ll get to Dylan, but Dylan deserved a lot of credit to get us to where he got to and then Adrian came in and was outstanding. I mean, really just fantastic and, you know, really had a good idea we wanted to take him through from Armstrong through Tucker. Um, the key to that was the efficiency of it. Um, you know, Adrian’s been able to be very efficient this year. Clearly, the outs. Um and then Miller picked up right at Suzuki and you know he was fantastic to grab that seventh clean inning and then you know we were figuring out and it’s probably starting to get a little be a little bit of a push but gave him the benefit of the doubt with with BCH. Um but he did a tremendous job understand from Darren he you know I think eight consecutive strikeouts in postseason from yesterday as well. So that speaks for itself. Pretty impressive. 104. Um, we like that and uh, Suarez was tremendous to bring it home. So, it was a really nice baseball game on on the Padre side and both sides really. It was a good baseball game. Megan, were you surprised that with a base open in that situation, they pitched to Manny? Listen, I I got my hands full with my own club. I can’t I can’t be thinking about anybody else’s is um strategy or not. So, um, yeah, we just think about managing our own club. And then just um a followup to your bullpen. Just what do you feel like collectively has been behind their ability to just to really shut down the line the Cubs lineup from top to bottom? Um well I think it starts with ability. I mean we got really really you know plus arms back there and and listen I want to be able to elaborate on that because you know if you’re going to pitch in a big league especially now you’re going to have a you’re going to have a plus arm. you know, I mean, you know, we got fire coming out everywhere um around this league. Uh one of the separators for our group, um the guys are in display today, you know, Mory Hone, Hiller, Suarez, but also Estrada, Peralta, Morgan, Bradley shown that is the ability to trust their stuff and be aggressive. So, you know, all these guys are really special with their arm talent. [ __ ] etc. Miller, Suarez. But the impressive thing about it is they’re they have pitches. They’re pitching and they’re not not going to make a situation bigger than it is. And you know, that says a lot for them. It’s a separator. Go to the far left on those back end arms. A lot of pitches today. Um, any limitations at all tomorrow or all hands on deck? I mean, you know, listen, I mean, [ __ ] and Miller have gone backto back days. Both got extended today. [ __ ] still efficient, but 33 pitches. Um, you know, Miller in the 30s for two games combined. I would have an expectation that all hands are on deck tomorrow. Um, you know, but we’re also going to check their temperature and and be smart. You know, we got to value their careers as well. But um we’ve also been we’ve only had two guys go three days in a row all year and we’ve done it and saved it for these circumstances. So obviously in an elimination game they’re special circumstances. Kevin Mike, it’s kind of a cliche a player like Manny in a big moment. That’s what he’s supposed to do. It’s it’s been kind of a grind for Manny for a couple months, but if you could just speak to him coming through in that moment because you guys really needed it. Yeah. No, I mean, listen, he’s still he’s Manny Machado, you know, he’s he’s heading in a great direction, you know, historic um direction in his career. Um I liked his swings all the way towards the end of the season. You know, it was he was starting to, you know, get his groove. Um I just like the way, you know, including yesterday, including today, you just see him just be that nice and ease and just trying to put a good swing, not trying to do too much. And when Manny’s in that spot, it’s it’s a it’s a lethal spot. Vinnie or Kevin God. Besides your overall confidence in him, you talked about giving the benefit of the doubt to Miller against Bush based on what he did today based on how he was going in that moment. Yeah, just I mean he was going I mean he was around 25 pitches, you know, let him finish it. Maybe swear just have a clean inning, you know, the next inning. Um you knew he was towards the end, stuff was still crisp and um you know, just a balancing act. Benny, you mentioned Dylan. what did you uh see from him and how how valuable was he for you guys today? Yeah, I’m glad you brought that up, you know, um because I thought Dylan was tremendous, you know, um big stuff, crisp going where he wanted to. Slider was where he wanted to go. Um knuckle curve, you know, curveball was really, you know, created some doubt, too, and threw it all three for strikes. Um, you know, we we knew in a one- nothing game that we were going to, you know, look to go to the bullpen. The the key for me, there was a couple keys, but the the primary one was to start the fourth. Um, if once he got, you know, Hap and Tucker, it’s like, all right, now we have a plan to be able to he can take, you know, Suzuki. Of course, it’s a double and we did what we did with Carson, but um to get to more hone in the lane that we liked him in, but he got us to that point and he did a fantastic job. He had he had electric stuff. Any last ones for Mike Kevin? Not to say that your job is is easy. I know it’s it’s tough to do, but what Morahon has done all year, including today, the efficiency, how much easier does that make it where he he tends to kind of allow you to decide when he’s going to come out? Yeah. No, I mean, that’s that’s the you know, listen, when guys are efficient and do the job, you know, it makes everybody look good, right? Don’t kid yourself. Um, but no, I mean, he’s been fantastic all year. And, you know, we put him into, you know, lanes, but he’s, you know, it’s not like he’s a he fits in more of the lefty lane, but today it was like, all right, we knew he’s going to grab uh Armstrong and then grab, you know, Swanson and and um Shaw and deal with Warner right-handed half. So, we trust him with anybody, but his efficiency is really, you know, it’s what you put him out there for, but he rewards it. All right, thanks, Mike. We’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you. Appreciate it. Um I mean he throws 100 miles an hour and he’s got a short arm action. Um but he don’t see he’s a good pitcher. So um I guess that’s what makes him tough to go face. He’s just a competitor. Uh I mean their whole staff is and that’s why they’re here. So I mean he just did his thing and I thought the bats were still pretty good. um I guess just a little little bit of a lack of execution, but I mean that’s what we’re we’re here to do is face the best and um go make them work and you know we got the bullpen in in a pretty early stage in the game and um that’s always going to be a positive thing. So just coming back tomorrow and getting ready for whoever’s starting. This is a lesson that playoffs are hard to win. Games are hard to win no matter what. What was the question? to win playoff games, how hard it is. Is that is this like a lesson that, you know, nothing is easy, especially in the playoffs? Uh, I don’t know about that. I mean, we knew it was going to be tough. Uh, I don’t think any of us expected to uh have the the Padres’s just lay down. Um, I mean, it would been really nice to just get this series over with today, but um, we’re also prepared to come back tomorrow and do it again. Hey, Mason Miller is going to get some headlines out of this one. What was it like facing him? Yeah, that’s just that’s a it’s another really good arm. Uh, you know, he throws 104 and throws a lot of sliders with that. So, changing the speed like that when you got 14 m hour, 50 mph, sometimes 16, 17 off off uh off his best pitch, that’s always going to be tough. So, um, I mean, I think he’s probably punched out seven of the nine hitters that he faced and good for him. I mean, again, that’s why he’s here. A deciding game’s a double-edged sword, but how do you embrace the opportunity like we got a chance to wrap this thing up at home still? Yeah, I mean, same mindset as today. I think uh, you know, we’re just looking forward to to get another game out of the Wrigley crowd. Um, I think that’s how I’m going to choose to look at it. Uh, like I said, we knew this wouldn’t be easy. So, um, boys are going to show up and and repeat, man. Like, we uh we’re all trusting in in each other and in the process, and that’s been a it’s been a big focus of ours, and we’ve only been really good at that. So, we’ll come back tomorrow and um take it to them. What are you noticing about just your first postseason so far, having, you know, a game yesterday, today, and just emotions, crowd, all of it? It’s really fun. Um, it’s really fun. Wrigley Wrigley definitely takes it up a notch. U, didn’t think that was really even possible, but um, I mean the the energy in the place has been absolutely incredible and infectious. So, uh, I’m a big fan of what we’re doing right now. Um, and again, just looking forward to coming back out tomorrow. How much? Thank you. You know, so better to win on my birthday. I’ll tell you that. Playoff winners. It’s awesome. What did you see from going today? I mean, he was spot spotting his pitches pretty well. I mean, his field was good. His off speed pitches were good. Kept them off balance. Bullpen came in, did a good job. I mean, the whole year these guys have been I mean, pretty much the heart and soul of, you know, everything we got going on and and and they showed up big time today. You guys talked yesterday about playing your style of baseball. Is that pretty much what you guys showed today with clean defense, pitching to the Yeah, you know, playoff is is is tough. you know, any little any little mistake can can be huge, you know, and and and and any good play also can be huge, you know. Uh credit to uh all of us today. We all did a good job. We came in prepared. We came in focused again. Uh we lost the first game. We could have easily just thought, you know, [ __ ] it. But we bounced back nice and it was it was nice. How big was that swing by Manny for this one, man? To make it three nothing, you know, from one nothing to three nothing. I mean, that’s a big that’s a big jump, you know. I mean, you play this game for a long time, you you you know how big that is, especially in the playoffs, you know. Uh, one run leads are never safe. No leaves is safe, actually. But having a little room for for error, I mean, that that that huge, especially with managing the bullpen and and and I mean, everything, it just changes the game. We’ve seen wild things happen at Riby Field. Yeah, I’m excited. Um, you know, I thought the Padres threw the ball really well today and made it tough on us. Um, and as the game got going there, I just started getting excited for tomorrow. Just kind of putting my head down and and starting to think about what tomorrow’s going to look like and feel like. Um, yeah. I mean, you do a lot of work throughout the years and throughout the season just to, you know, be ready for big moments and, um, I’m looking forward to it. What What is the mindset? I know you say, “Don’t change it, but human in this do or die type game.” Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I think it’s I know this is cliche, probably not the answer everyone wants, but it’s one pitch at a time. um you know, in the playoffs, you know, probably a little bit shorter release. So, for me, um I know I have good command. I think for me it’s making the pitches I want, not giving in, being really relentless on my game plan and my attack. Um yeah, just making sure I’m I’m prepared, go over the hitters, um and don’t give in. How much do you think it helped that you were able to kind of observe this environment for two days and also kind of watch their lineup? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it’s it’s big. It’s been electric the last couple days. Um, I think I get more adrenaline just sitting on the sidelines. Um, I get nervous sitting in the dugout. So, um, yeah, the fans are bringing it. I know they’ll bring it again tomorrow. And, um, I’m sure, you know, when I’m laying my head down tonight, I’ll envision what that looks like and feels like that way tomorrow we’re ready for it. You played so well down the stretch. Does that factor into how you feel for this start? Yeah, I mean, every start kind of has its own life. Um, you know, you have to, they don’t care how I’ve been feeling. I have to go out there and execute pitches. That being said, like you obviously want to go in with some m momentum and and some confidence. Um so yeah, I mean I feel good about where I’m at. I feel good about the work we’ve done between starts. Um and I’ll I’ll be ready to go. Building off your your first answer. You’ve pitched in the playoffs before, but to get the ball in a moment as big as this, like what does that mean to you? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it’s big. I mean, I think it’s less about me and just more about these guys. like I really do love this team and love this city and um you know I want to come through for these guys in here. Um this is you know why I’m here. I’m here to pitch these types of games. Um you know and I love everyone in here. So just want to go out and and be that guy. Knowing about playoffs and shorter leashes. Do you are you able to let it fly a little bit more? You know what I mean? Or adrenaline take over anyway? Yes. I mean I think I think the the plan is to just let the game take me there a little bit. um you know, kind of just go about my work and my process. Let the game take up the the adrenaline a little bit. Um but yeah, I mean, I’m expecting to to feel froggy and feel crisp. Um and that’s where I think just double down and execute pitches. Feel like you guys have weathered a lot of little storms this year and been a pretty resilient team. Just fitting backs against the wall a little bit, but just what’s that mindset of the way this team has been resilient? Yeah, I mean I think you guys hear us say it all the time like we’re a super professional group. Everyone’s going to show up tomorrow, do their work, do their routines, and be ready to go. And we say it a lot throughout the season so that we’re ready for these these big games and these big moments. Um, you know, you can always fall back on your routines and your processes. And um, this is a very experienced group. A lot of a lot of playoff experience in here. Um, so yeah, I mean, I don’t think we need to go out there with the idea of our backs being against wall. I think we go out there, play our game, um, execute our plan and and we’ll be all right. Is it possible to really have a different adrenaline for what everybody names more important games now? I mean, you guys are always given 100%. Yeah, I mean, every big league game is so important. Um, you know, I think obviously in the playoffs in an elimination game, you’ll have a little more. Um, but like pitching at Wrigley, we’re used to pitching in a in a soldout stadium in front of, you know, 40,000 people. Like that’s our normal. These fans bring it in April, May, it doesn’t matter. So, I think that’s, you know, an advantage for us also. Um, but yeah, I mean, of course, like you wake up knowing it’s going to feel a little different. Um, and I’ve always liked being in that situation, just showing up with a little urgency and knowing that, you know, this matters. So, as a competitor, these are the moments. There’s Jameson Tyion. He’s going to get the start tomorrow in game three. Pretty good season. 129 innings, a 368 erra. Rough one for you, Darvish. former Cub by the way, a longtime major leager before that in Japan obviously, but 538 erra in 15 starts for the San Diego Padres’s.
