[Civian] Kirill Kaprizov’s $137 Million Contract Sets the Floor for Connor McDavid’s New Deal

  1. I bet McDavid takes less or the same. He wants to win, that contract really handicaps any team trying to add depth.

  2. If it was mcdavid first contract I would agree with 17M being the floor, but it’s not and hes already made a fortune. Money is important but he’s considering legacy also now.

Mcdavid might want to give himself the best chance to win cups and that is by leaving money on the table to get better players around him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he signed a 2-3 year extension at 12.5M, the same as he makes now.

Give oilers management 3-4 chances for a cup at a good cap hit. Then in 2-3 years sign an 8 year at 16M-17M cap hit if they do win a cup and cement his personal and oilers legacy.

If the oilers struggle over those 3-4 years and don’t win a cup then at age 30-31 he has options. He can look elsewhere for a 7 year deal once his short one expires.

That’s what I would be thinking anyway.

  3. The floor for McDavid is whatever McDavid wants, and the ceiling is the leagues 20% of the cap rule.

Kaprizov’s deal is so one-off it won’t be used as an effective benchmark. It’ll be the starting point for players in negotiations.

  4. I can see mcdavid doing like a 2/$36 million deal to make sure the Oilers can build up the roster more before he commits long term

  5. I’ll die on this hill: if McDavid gets the full 20% of the cap of whatever team he decides to take that deal with, he’s never getting a Cup.

20% of the Cap on a player is a fantastic way to destroy any chance at building depth.

If the Leafs have taught the league anything is to not load your cap onto a handful players. We spent almost a decade trying to win that way. It’s clearly a formula that doesn’t work.

  6. McDavid likes money but loves winning more, he will do what he can to keep cap space open to have a solid team if they make playoffs this year

  7. IMO this deal is a one-off that won’t be used as a benchmark for most players/GMs.

  8. God I wish he’d leave to even a a semi competent org instead of getting his career wasted here in Edmonton

  9. Oof I see a lot of Oiler fans coping that he’s going to sign for less to win….yeah you guys are cooked 😂

  10. A shot term deal makes the most sense to both sides.

If McDavid wants max term max dollars it’s going to be 20M.

2 years x 18M and go from there.

  11. Just like the meme says Prices are “TOO DAMN HIGH” !

When does this always going up stuff stop ?! how much is Too much?!

All this does is make Ticket & other prices go way up ! Not a good thing at all !

  12. He’s at the point where he has enough money. He’s won all the trophies he could possibly win. All he wants is the one he’s missing, the Stanley Cup. He’ll take a team friendly deal if it means a better shot at the cup. He can make up the couple missing millions easily with another advertising deal
