[Bear Studio Breakdown] Caleb’s September Highlights

  1. Watching this video, you can see the progress Caleb has made. Most of these highlights are with him within the pocket, throwing on time, throwing to a correct open receiver and taking whats there.

  2. I think a lot of the stuff he does well gets overlooked because 1) he makes it look easy and 2) an unholy alliance of non-Bears fans who want to hate him and Bears fans who are terrified to be excited because they let themselves be fooled by Justin Fields.

Yes, he does have a tendency to yip a few throws a game because he relies too much on arm talent and his footwork can get away from him.

But he also makes a few throws a game that most of the starting QBs on any given sunday simply cannot make. His combination of arm strength and quick release gets the ball there *fast*, into tight windows and into receivers’ hands with a chance to turn and look rather than getting hit as it gets there.

He has an exceptional feel for defenders’ leverage and range of influience, knowing exactly where he needs to place the ball to keep it away from them. (This is also what leads to some of those “bad” throws where he’s expecting the WR to see the same thing he does and adjust away from the defender). Which is why he’s on pace to have the lowest interception percentage in NFL history once he gets enough throws to qualify for career lists.

And he throws a *really* nice intermediate layer ball.
