Jake Browning Press Conference – September 29

How frustrating a loss is this? Very um yeah, very frustrating loss and uh yeah, we got to get back to work and figure out how we can be more productive on offense and stop putting our defense in bad spots. 13 total points over the past two games. Something that you know right off the bat we’re watching that you can point to as for why the offense isn’t working? No, I mean I think anytime you are struggling or doing well on offense, there’s a lot that goes into it and uh you know I think for me my focus is my role in that which is you know dropping back, making sure I’m making good decisions um you know and and continuing to move the ball forward. And so yeah, there’s a there’s a lot that goes into it. I’m focused on my role and trying to be the solution. Uh my role in the solution of being finding way to be more explosive, put up more points, sustain more drives, be better on third down. I mean, just play better on offense in general. Obviously, after last week’s turnovers this past week, you were saying you haven’t played kind of toward that mind aggressive and reckless play tonight. No turnovers for you personally. Do you think that there was maybe a part of your brain where so that you weren’t turning the ball over, maybe you weren’t playing as aggressive? I mean, I don’t think so. I don’t really I mean, off the top of my head, I think any game you’re going to want some throws back. Um, but I didn’t I didn’t walk away from the game thinking I just walked in there and tried to check the ball down every play. I mean, there’s a lot of throws down the field. Um, I mean, I thought as far as from a turnover perspective, like, yeah, we played clean, but we didn’t move the ball, so who cares? Um, and I think that for me, like when you’re struggling on offense and struggling to move the ball, it’s it’s fighting that urge to, you know, have those frustration throws, you’re like trying to make something happen and then next thing you know, it’s interception. So, um, you know, that that’s kind of that line you have to tow as far as I didn’t feel like there was anything down the field. Just off of memory and looking at the pictures on the sideline, I didn’t feel like there was anything down the field where it was like, ah, I should have thrown that, but I was too afraid of making a mistake. So, I didn’t, you know, I think for the most part I I mean, I hesitate to say I put the ball where I was supposed to go on each play cuz we didn’t do anything on offense, but I mean, for the most part, that that was kind of the case. What are your thoughts on play calling? No, I don’t think it’s a I don’t think it’s a play calling issue at all. I mean, I think everyone when you have a poor performance on offense, um, there’s so many different things that go into it. You know, for me, like things that may not even stand out as like bad plays, but things where you’re like, “Ah, you know, I need to have my eyes on this side because of this or whatever.” And basically, when you play that poorly on offense for this two game stretch, like there’s a lot everyone’s playing a role in it and um everybody’s got to play a role in the solution and so that’s that’s kind of my focus. Well, it seems like it’s starting to just over two games snowball offense. How do you stop it in its tracks? Get back to work and have a solution mindset and try and figure out, you know, what are our what’s our identity on offense? Like what are we what’s like our go-to stuff that we’re going to do and uh and how are we going to you know, we got good players um on the perimeter. How do we put them in situations where they can go make plays and do what they’re what they’re capable of doing? And uh you know, I think that’s kind of my main focus and I really just say the perimeter cuz that’s kind of you know, my my area on offense is trying to get the those guys the ball. You guys move the ball early. Um did you think the game shifted on that penalty that knocked away the line pass 14? I mean, I’m not going to sit up here and say one play. You know, I think there’s a lot of different plays throughout the game that momentum swings and all that, but just overall the whole performance on offense was very poor and we left our defense out to dry a lot. And uh you know, I want to sound like a broken record, but my focus for this week is just we’re all part of the you know, on offense, we’re all a part of the problem and we all need to be a part of the solution. and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing to uh be a part of the solution. What’s Jamar like after a couple games like this? You talked about being more vocal. What’s your interaction with him right now? I mean, good. Uh I think he’s on the same page with me that, you know, just trying to figure out what’s going to work, what’s going to get us to where we need to be on offense. And uh so yeah, I think that’s kind of where the conversations have been geared around. Jake, after the game in Minnesota, it seemed like you guys really emphasized needing to play more sharp with the turnovers. Obviously, that was the issue tonight, but tonight was the penalties. What do you guys feel like you can do during the week to maybe sharpen the focus so it’s not something different next week? Yeah, I mean I think as far as penalties go, um, you know, I think my role as the quarterback is make sure we’re not taking delay games, we’re not, you know, putting people in a situation where they’re going to commit penalties. As far as overall on offense, you know, I think that that’s more of a Zach question. Um, for me, I’m just really focused on what I need to what it is, trying to figure out what I need to do in order to help us move the ball and help us play better on offense. Jake, I don’t know if you guys said it felt like the offense maybe didn’t want it as much as the defense did. Did you feel like enough effort in what you needed to? Yeah, I didn’t think I didn’t think effort was an issue. Um, I think just the last two weeks just feels like never really had momentum. Um, haven’t really been explosive. Haven’t we have, you know, one or two good plays and then we’ll get into a first and 20. Um, and that’s just you’re fighting a hard battle with one arm behind your back when you end up in longer situations. second and long, first and long leading to third and long. And you know, it’s not good offenses don’t do that. So, we need to clean it up. And uh yeah, I mean, I I don’t have I don’t think effort was an issue, and I never question anybody’s effort in the locker room. I don’t really think that’s how everything goes um for the Bengals. But, you know, I do think it’s a time when you’ve had two tough losses where you haven’t performed well on offense. Like, you do have to look in the mirror and say, “Okay, what is my role in this?” And, you know, removing all the emotion, the outside noise, and just saying looking at the film and saying, “Okay, what is my role in this? What do I need to do better?” And for me, that’s like I’ve said, you guys are getting tired of me hearing about hearing me say it, but that’s going to be my focus this week. Thanks guys. Thank you.

  1. Surprise. Broncos had 0 fear of a Zac Taylor lead offense…Jake ain’t as bad as everyone thinks, Joe is just able to out play terrible coach, play calling and bad scheme. We could really lose 54-3 against Detroit. Stadium needs to be empty and send a message to FO

  2. It’s is incredible to see a professional sports organization not have a decent back up qb considering Burrows injury track record. This guy has to stand there knowing he damn well cannot see or execute throws down field like burrow does on this offense

  3. Put the ball where they can catch it if you don’t throw it away on 3rd down you over throw or throw to the wrong guy you can’t lead CB and safety with your eyes you can’t call out protection to help the offensive lineman you are trash can’t throw on the run and have no clue how to run a offense

  4. Jake browning is trash he was Shakey in pre season this dude is trash go get me Russell wilson already I don't wanna hear his voice anymore he want throw the ball to jamar the passes to tee were out of bounds like wtf

  5. Honestly, i think the pressure to become Joe is what is killing Jake these last 2 games 🤦‍♀️ Not to compare but Jake arms are not as strong or precised as Joe's. He still needs alot of work so honestly he deseves to be benched after this game. He has alot of work to go correct: strong arms, fast thinking, good sight

  6. Zac needs to step down as Head coach or leave. This team need organization, discipline and its not going to come from calm & collected Zac. There needs to be a new coach that can spark that fire and truly challenge the best in this weak ass team with surpringly alot of weapons

  7. Still doing the same vanilla shotgun nonsense. Of course, we're going to get the same results. Even when Joe burrow was in the game. First two games on offense still stunk like 3-day-old ass. Zach Taylor was fetching coffee for Jared Goff before getting this head coaching job. He's never been shown to be a Sean McVay genius type. You think Brian Johnson will put up an effort like that?

  8. It’d be one thing if it was one bad performance. The team really hasn’t had a single good offensive game. These last two games were literally historically bad.
