Padres Confront Umpires After Brutal Strike 3 Call on Xander Bogaerts
The Cubs took down the Padres’s in a winner take all game three. There was a very very controversial but not really call because it was an incorrect call. Okay, bad bad call in the ninth inning on Xander Bogarts. And forget fans and people like me who don’t have a horse in the fight, right? I’m just watching and I hate a bad call late in a game. The Padres’s players were really, really pissed. vocally pissed, giving it to the umps. Oh man, after the game when they lost. I mean, this is your season, right? You’re down three 0. You get one for me. Look how close they got to the umpires. I mean, it looked like they were trying to literally fight them. To me, that’s inappropriate. I I don’t care how much they messed crap up. Look, look at that, Todd. Father, who is that? I don’t know who that is. The first guy in there. Holy cow. You can’t do that. Listen, I’ve gotten in arguments with umpires. I I’ve gotten in a bunch of them. I’ve never I’ve never seen it like that. As they’re leaving the field, I’ve I’ve talked to Gucci one time about while they’re leaving, I said, “Hey, Gu, before you go, just please do me a favor and take a look at the strike three you called me. I know it’s over with, but it it was a mis call.” Like, that’s how I talked to him. And he’s like, “You got it. I never saw him again, but we never talked about it.” But angry, man. I I understand the anger. I understand. I would be frustrated, too. I would want to say something, too. But the game’s over with. I I you have to move on. And, you know, and I I I think in the heat of the moment, how they did, how they how a lot of the guys struggled, how they struggled runners in scoring position, um I think it all boiled after that. But yeah, I I think going down the steps didn’t help either because it looked like either DJ Reburn tripped or he’s trying to get out of there quick thinking something was going to happen. Um man, they were angry. They They were furious. They were definitely mad. But I’m gonna have to take the other side, too. You can’t bark back at him. I mean, I know you guys are a group of seven. You’re all going down a dugout together. Like, you can’t you just can’t bark back at him. And you saw everybody sees the player come over and yell at him, but my focus goes right to Was it Gucci that was behind the dish? No. Oh, no. That was DJ Rayburn. Okay. I mean, but if you look right away at DJ Rayburn, he he’s hot. I mean, he’s he’s he didn’t like what it was was yelled at him. And I’m not saying anybody should players should yell at him, but just go just go back down to the the dugout and don’t it’s just just not a good look. You see the players walk over here and then he he leans in too. DJ leans in and gives him gives him his piece and like everybody else is just like, “Okay, okay. We’re going to go. We’re going to go hold them back. Oh, players are pissed. Players are pissed. They I I haven’t seen players that pissed in, you know, caught on video. I Excuse me. My pen fell. I The game’s done. The game is done. But during the game, you want to go, but the season’s done. But listen, they they they barked at him. But then DJ, I would love I would love to know. We’ll never know. We’ll love to know what DJ said because if nobody was there, it looked like they were ready to go get him. He might have said, “Yeah, just because you didn’t effing hit.” I I don’t know. I’m speculating. I mean, I had an umpire last week in my in my travel ball game. I said, “Man, I just said, “Hey, listen. I just want both sides. Could we just be a little more consistent? That’s all.” And that’s how I talked to him like that. Don’t be mad. Your team’s not hitting. I said, “Okay, okay, valid point.” I said, “I got you. I just I I just need you to be more consistent, that’s all.” And I walked away. He got me. That was good. But but at the end of the day, they would look like they’re ready to go. rats. He like Bogarts looked like he was Oh man, like there was something. I I hope that every single San Diego Padre voted for the ABS challenge system, if not all balls and strikes to be called. I’m serious. Like I’m surprised that not every single player votes for this. I get it. Every single pitch might be too much for you, but to not vote for a challenge system in 2025, you’re absolutely nuts. Like I want to talk to forget just every every single player, right? You get so pissed in these moments. These are the moments that we’re talking about. Ninth inning, that is not a strike. Now, we’re going to fix that. Starting in 2026, we’re going to look back and be like, that doesn’t happen anymore. When it’s a blatant miss, it’s not happening. JJ Cooper wrote an article. We can show some of the information that that he put up there, our buddy from Baseball America who’s super smart talking about the game. But I’m like, anybody that doesn’t agree or or I’ve still even heard recently a former player who’s a broadcaster who’s recently out of the game say, “Well, you know, the human element of the game, but not just the human element.” He’s like, “I want the umpires to be human beings for every single pitch.” I’m like, “Every pitch? Do you go to the ballpark and you want every pitch to be called by a human, even if it’s wrong?” I’m like, “Come on.” So, uh, JJ, by the way, you know, wrote the article, would it have been called a ball or a strike by the ABS system? And there’s the pitch location from ABS. It’s a ball. I think anybody saw that with their eyeballs, too. The other point, though, is Todd Father, we see this all the time right now in regular season and postseason games. This is not like, oh my gosh, there was one call missed that decided everything. This happens all the time, every game. He actually had a pretty good game. Ratings wise, he had one bad miss in the ninth inning. Would it have led to something? Maybe. But also, the Padres’s were three for 26 with runners in scoring position. Tatisa Rise and Machado were 0 for 11 in that elimination game. There there’s both sides of the coin here. Here’s his umpire scorecard. And again, I’m not defending him because I am pro pro robots calling as many balls and strikes as possible because I’m sick of this crap. But at the same time, let’s not act like this was an outlier game and he was coming after the Padres’s, right? when I saw this cuz I I did miss a few pitches throughout the game because we were watching both games at the same time and I’m like was this like a terribly umpired game and I’m talking to other people and they’re like, “No.” And then you look at the umpire scorecard. This this wasn’t a disaster game. It was one bad pitch and they’re losing their mind. Yeah. And and I think the the the messed up part about it like Yeah, great game. Awesome. But in the ninth inning when it comes to crunch time and the other teams, you got to find a way to be the best that you can be. And you see it a lot of the times the call you got to be specific. You got to be ready. That’s the the calls that got to be made right. And he missed the biggest one of the day with nobody out. It would have been a runner on first. Not saying he would have hit the next two batters or whatever, but still the pressure would have been put on and the game would have definitely been changed. Would they have won? We don’t know. We never know that. But on a 32 count, lock in, man. Just lock in. That was the biggest pitch of the night. Yeah, but he’s trying. I I don’t think it’s that. I just think he messed up. He saw what nobody else saw. And let me ask you a follow-up question because for me, it’s a layup question. How do we fix that? How do we present that? Uh how do we prevent that from ever happening again? Well, yeah, they got the system. That’s it. That’s it. We’re about to fix it. We should have had this. We should have had this 10 years ago. I still want umpires out there, though. I still I don’t want them ever to leave. I That’s fine. But a challenge would fix this. Done. Fix it. I love it. I think they should get three challenges, but go ahead. That’s another story. No, I I don’t don’t say it should have been 10 years ago because I was on the board when they started talking about like the review system. It takes a while to find stuff that actually works. The reviews, they were going to do the exact same thing as they do in tennis, the Hawkeye for fair and foul balls, every single one. And when I saw the evidence exactly how it worked on a grass baseball field, that wasn’t going to work. So, it takes time. I I I get it. You want it like sooner than later, but it does take time. 10 years is probably too much. Okay. Five years. Well, I will say the pitch clock was ready like 12 years ago. We were doing it in the Arizona Fall League. That was ready. And that was two sides that don’t get along and bickering about other things and it leading to preventing our game from being better. That That’s a fact. Okay. That’s the only reason why that wasn’t in there sooner. I’ll dispute that to death with anybody. Don’t yell at me.
The Chicago Cubs knocked out the Padres in a winner-take-all Game 3, but all anyone is talking about is the brutal strike three call on Xander Bogaerts in the ninth inning. Foul Territory reacts to the blown call, the chaos that followed, and Padres players furiously confronting the umpires as they walked off the field. Did the umps cost San Diego their season, or did the Padres own struggles with runners in scoring position seal their fate? Plus, the crew debates how an ABS challenge system could change moments like this forever.

Idiot padres…. Sure bad call, but the whole game they didn’t play so shut up padres play better
Issue was the padres didn’t come to play until the 9th. So that pitch was huge and would have loaded the bases with no outs
Same idiot padres players that talked shit about the dodgers fans, 🤣…. The players are the “professionals” right, act like it. Just mad yall going home early, AGAIN.
But to attack Umpires like they did, MLB needs to fine the team and players involved 5 million dollars.
He started walking to first before the call…guaranteed to be a strike then.
Really convenient that AJ's not on this video. All that hate he was giving when the Cubs won the first game. I would love to see him cry some tears because my cubbies won the series .😂 He probably would have been just as pissed as the Padres over that umpire call probably would have spent the whole video blaming the umpires for the Padres losing and not the Cubs just being the better team on the day.😂
It was not the only missed call, it was the most crucial, but missed calls in both sides. I think the league should suspend each of those players to start next season. Ridiculous
With the Padres you always know how the season will end. All that money on a all star roster that underachieves every year
MLB umpire ratings were released for that game today…36 missed calls…and 3 of the umpires received a far below average performance rating. Eeeek.
One of dozens of missed calls every day in MLB… Unfortunately it was a big moment but you can’t attack the umps. If I’m not mistaken the guy in the hat spit and reached at the ump. You’re way off if you think this is okay. This is a Manny Machado team…he is a borderline sociopath. This is what you get. Karma Manny.
Well they took a run off the board for us in the 7th. Hoerner was safe at home. San Diego still had the tying run in scoring position after this. Blaming your entire season on one call is weak.
Go Cubs go!
Nobody touched one of the umpires. They reacted like human beings. If you did not react that way then you didn't really care or you're just a coward
Umpires all have big egos and now they will be humbled with abs. Thank God games will actually be legitimate starting next year
Cubs were the better team, but they didn't need the extra help
Pitch was nowhere close. If it was on the corner nobody's complaining
That was an incredibly professional at bat by Xander, only to get the bat taken out of his hand
If I was there that umpire would have been wearing nachos walking down those steps
CUBS SUCKS
Dodger fan . I’m pissed for the padres. Wow I can’t believe it
That call didn’t lose the game. Tying runs on base and didn’t get knocked in. Padres didn’t hit with runners on.
That pitch was maybe an inch off the plate. Not an egregious call at all blame Tatis who swung and missed at every pitch thrown to him. Padres are by far the most unlikable team in baseball.
It wasn't just the end of a ball game It was the end of the season in the playoffs. I'm not saying it was okay but it was a horrible call and it came at the end unfortunately.
That umpire really cheated the game and the fans. Altered the ending of what would’ve made for much more entertaining closing game.
That umpire was NOT acting professional at all. If you watch the previous few close pitches you see Xander turn around and complain. When Xander started to make for 1st on a 3 and 1 pitch you can see the ump being irritated. I believe the 3 and 2 pitch that was obviously a ball was the umpire retaliating for the previous pitches. And when walking off the field instead of being professional and walking away or even saying my bad missed the call he turns towards the Padres player and goes at it with them. Not professional that guy should not ump any of the remaining playoff series.
If it comes down to one bad call, you weren't doing your job anyway.
I hope the challenge system fixes this. However, if it's the 9th inning, there's at least a possibility that you don't have any challenges left because you already burned them earlier in the game. And if that's the case I suppose you could argue that it's the teams fault for wasting their challenges. It's going to be important to know that you are right if you do challenge. You only get 2. On the other hand I could imagine that a team that's too hesitant to use theirs on close calls could be hurt by that too because of missed opportunities. Maybe you should have two different standards: a lower threshold for the first challenge, and a higher one for the second. You need to be 80% sure for the first challenge and 100% sure for the second (or the game's on the line).
abs had it as a strike actually
At the end of the day, no game comes down to one strike call. Like this game, the losing team always can look back and find many other instances where they didn't rise to the occasion.
I think it's time to change angel hernandez in the banner with CB bucknor
If the ABS system is in place, what if the Padres are out of challenges when Bogaerts is up? It would be entirely possible. There are plenty of times during a game when a player questions a ball-strike call, and the umpire got it right.
I'm all for umpires getting their ass beat. They SHOULD be able to get their ass beat. Human umpires shouldn't exist anymore. We have robots, cameras and computers. Take the human element out of it, or give umpires punishment for fucking up a call.
One BLOWN Ball/Strike call doesn't cost ANY team a game. That written, D.J. Reyburn and MLB should be embarrassed. That wasn't a controversial call, it was a blown call! With three outs remaining in an elimination game, unacceptable. That should never happen again.
This is why fans what the ump behind the plate replaced with a robot.
The umps were paid big money.
Padres are mad because in the end, they're still the loser padres….sucks to be them and their fans
Padres are trashy thugs. Bogaerts had a bat at the plate. He should've used it to hit the ball.
Not running out ground balls; terrible at bats – zero discipline!
The ABs will actually make it WORSE! It will make the umps even MORE lazy and complacent – they'll say "ball/strike – what's the difference"? Let them challenge if they want
Padres will always under preform. Chokers every time.
If your season comes down to one blown call, then you weren’t doing your job. Play better
